Its ashame. I wasnt a big fan of him to be honest, but I watched every now and then. Its kinda jerky to be like "He got what he deserved," especially considering he had a wife and kids. However, it isnt surprising. He isnt very subtle in the way he wrangles animals. If you watch Jeff Corwin or almost any other herpatologist at work on one of those shows they show much more respect and concern when dealing with a dangerous animal. Its sad, but this kind of thing happens. Surprising that they didnt have a medical team closer than they did.

i think there a day ahead in australia. so that means that he died today. like within the last 6 hours, unless there 2 days ahead then it was yesterday. i think thats how it works.

He raised the whole 'nature show' thing to a new level by being really entertaining, brought in tons of new viewers, and then used that to try and enlighten our usually short-sighted species about our planet. When somebody spends their life on a noble task, then dies from the activity.... i'm sad, yet I'm glad somebody like that existed, and spent their years achieving what they set out to do. If we take his ideas/passion to heart, then no matter how untimely his accidental death has been, his 'life' will have really meant something and we will all be the better for experiencing his body of work...

are you on crack?  one spin of the earth is one day.  Time is a constant, if he died yesterday, no matter where he was in the world he died yesterday.

I hope some day we can all put aside our racisms and prejudices and just laugh at people

he was reffering to the date. Depending upon where you are on the globe the date changes, although of course its never more than 1 days difference, you cant be two days ahead.

I always figured he get his wife killed first. I still remember one episode where they were going down this water hole. It was like 200 yards of sheer cliff face. He's helping her because she's stuck and she slips. The only thing keeping her from falling to her death was Steve. He's telling her "I'm sorry hun i can't hang on!" She's in tears. He's in tears and then the camera cuts and it turns out the camera man had to go help to save her.

Man i'll miss this guy. He was truly a unique individual in a world of homogenius boredom.

man that sucks. my 6 year old daughter worships that guy. whenever the tv is on in my house, 90% of the time its animal planet. we were at the park today when my wife told her. she was bawling and wouldn't walk next to us. after a bit, she came back to me and said' i didn't even get to meet him' steve irwin was and is a great human being from what i've seen and he will be sorely missed in our house.

Apparently the Stingray was not even the focus of what they were filming but rather just swam by and got trapped between Irwen and the camerman which caused it to lash out.

It is ironically funny when a serial-mugger gets shot by an old lady while trying to take her purse, or Roy gets mauled by one of his tigers. This right here is just sad. It is the first celebrity death that really hit me hard. If his kids just weren't so damn young...

The thing that gets me (and must be why a lot of people didn't grasp his death) is that the guy was just a shining example of life. He was just so energetic and passionate with everything he did, and to think he's just... snuffed out... is disturbing.

He lived dangerously but like you said he was a shining example to life.He did what he did with a passion and brought wildlife much closer then anyone would ever dare(after him came the wannabe steve irwin).

I never get emotional when a celebrity dies but he was different.

He was a little more than a celebrity, he didn't just showboat in front of the camera, or have stuntmen, or the like. He was a real person, and he showed people what he did in his life, and that's why people got attached.

I was close to tears when it settled in that he was dead, and I never cry. And I never did, damnit.

The Animal Planet folks have never gotten the reality that animals can kill you.  They seem to always portray dangerous animals as being harmless:

"See, I am swimming with a shark and it has not attacked me.  Therefore sharks are not dangerous."

"See, I am hand-feeding a bear and it has not taken my arm off (yet).  Therefore bears are harmless."

"See, I am standing next to a tiger and it has not eaten me.  Tigers are just big playful kittens."

"Animals are harmless and misunderstood.  Animals rule!"

And all of the above, of course, are famous last words.

Playing with live and undrugged crocodiles, swimming with sharks, messing with giant sea rays, are all things that can get you killed, even if you are an expert.  Reality does not bend to fit the warped views of a few.

Sadly, for all his hubris, the Crocodile Hunter has missed out on raising his family.

QFE I know for a fact though Stevo lived more in his life and seen and done more then most people could dream of, some of the nasty replies are pure ignorant and come from people with no understanding of what he was all about. Life is dangerous and just living is a risk and I commend him for putting himself at risk to show us couch potato's what a freaking Emu was (not the illegal sever!) or all the information about dangerous animals that I learned from his show. RIP Steve /salute

This really saddens me.. I grew up watching him....

The only thing I want to know now is, what his last words were.  They have his death on tape.

I doubt he had any but "uggggghhh" or something.  The sting from a stingray is excruciatingly painful to the point of incapacitation for a couple of days (and that's if you get it in the arm or leg).  Receiving a heavy dose of stingray poison directly to the heart had to have taken him out immediately, is my best guess.
