It's extremely solo friendly, but I'd make sure that you specialize in at least one dps soul, since mobs can take quite a few hits at higher levels.

Rift had a very long and generous open beta. If you purchased it after having participated, then it's your own fault. I'm not a fan of the game either, but I at least got to try it before it released and come to a well-informed conclusion.
