Sadly it sounds like even though the OP has been a long time gamer, he's never given text games a try - I think everyone should try an MMO text game atleast once. I have a level 99 character in Achaea that can turn into a dragon, and PvP with drago…
I highly recommend Achaea, it is free to play and has a large, active community. Very newbie-friendly if you talk to people and you can join cities, guilds, the PvP is very deep but you don't have to PvP

No wonder people are dissatisfied with MMOs, MMOs fail utterly to do the impossible.

There's a good reason I stick to MUDs. Can spend so much time on the internet looking for the "perfect game" but I always end up going back to my favourite MUD.
I want to be able to do nearly anything in a game I would be able to do if I was actually my character. I should be able to go chop down that tree - or atleast shake its branches. Things I do in the game should have an impact in some way.

I like Iron Realms business model. They let you spend money on your character and buy items to increase your health, increase your damage, but they are just little perks and not ground-breaking. Someone who doesn't spend any money has a good chance …
The fantasy genre isn't dead, developers just aren't doing anything new. OPs post summed up poorly written RPG plotlines, but a game that remains persistent and hosts events for players to participate in can never become stagnant
You're not going to find the deep PvP you want in 3d MMOs. The engines simply can't handle a fighting system like, say, Street Fighter, with all kinds of moves and combinations.
You need to check out something like Achaea or Imperian. Not tur…
Yup there is still the newbie room with Romeo and Juliet, and they really expanded the newbie areas. Its not just pixies and imps anymore. I started playing in about 2001 so I remember how small the game was - trust me, it's enormous now. You can ev…

Iron Realms really pioneered this whole F2P model back in 1997. I can't believe how many years developers got away with subscription fees.
Iron Realms was selling mall items to players when Blizzard was still in diapers.
Achaea is very Greek themed, your character can follow Gods and offer to them. Some of the Gods are named from Greek mythology like Caspian, Eris, Sarapis, etc. Also the whole mythos of the game has a very greek theme to it.
if you check it out my characters name is the same one I use here. You can send me a message in the game and I'll help you out, that goes for anyone checking this thread out
I really enjoy what Iron Realms did with the 'end game' in their MMOs. Achaea especially, where you can transform into a Dragon at level 99 and you get special dragon skills to PvP with.
The community is very deep in its roleplay so at any point…

For the best F2P you might want to check out Iron Realms, they make really in-depth rpg games that let you customize many aspects of your character. The PvP is pretty amazing too, lots of ways to finish your opponent
