  • Diablo III is more to blame for the loss of subs than F2P games, imo.   There's just too many options out there these days, most of them not MMOs.
  • When you get to be a certain size, you start generating your own wind.  It's like Silicone Valley or Paris back in the 30's. WoW is so big that it generates stuff, things that other MMOs can only dream of.   I'll leave this here.
  • Minecraft is the MMO that is most like a sandbox and it's hugely popular.  Just do a youtube search for the name.  It only allows 20 players last time I checked and that's below massively multiplayer  But you can build your own things just like with…
  • In the early days of the Internet, around 1998 or so, the only people on the Internet were college students and early adopters for the most part.   Everyone was the same more or less, male, 20 somethings, geeks.   These days everyone and their g…
  • Sandboxes by their very definition are fun.  I'm talking about a real sandbox, 4 boards and a bunch of sand.  A sandbox can keep you occupied for hours and hours, but you need imagination.   Many people prefer the sandbox over the swing for exampl…

  • All three have free trials.  LOTRO and EQ2 you can play for free.  I think EQ2 has the best free to play deal.  LOTRO, you have to earn Turbine Points to unlock some content while EQ2 lets you see almost everything.
  • Second Life is the most sandboxy game I can think of at the moment.  Most people log on, maybe play around with the free stuff, put on a new set of clothes, look around a bit and log off, never to return.   But Second Life is so much more.    Th…
  • Soon there will be a RPG to suit everyone.  The creation of MMORPGs will become very easy and hosting an MMO will become cheap, if not doing it from a server parked in your living room. Everyone will be happy.  Then you will see posts like 'are the…
  • Etymologists will figure it out one day. But until then, et me defend my point.   But for now, why I think Fred coined the term is because Compute! was so widely read by us amatuers.  Fred also published a book or two, on computers in teh classro…
