It is 'ok'. I had expected a bit more, tbh. The graphical side isn't that good at all, small areas, long loading times.. On the same time, the AI of your companions seems quite damn bugged. Sometimes they just standaround, doing nothing. But i can first really judge the game, once good player made modules gets out.

If you expect something graphically better then oblivion you better give up RPG's for a while. Sure Oblivion has awesome graphics but the story and depth isn't all that much compared to other games and its prequal.

See, that just doesn't cut it for me. If I'm going to play a game, I want it to be professionally done. I don't really have much time for being a beta tester for some amateur's module or "persistent world". I've tried out several of them from NWN 1 and to be honest I much prefer priofessionally produced MMOs to amateur online worlds using the NWN set. The sub fees are not an issue for me, so the fact that they're free isn't very important to me ... more important to me is quality, both in terms of graphics and gameplay.
I think that the NWN approach is something you either like or you don't. It's a given that for the most part it is a modular approach, meaning smaller restricted zones, a linear story line and so forth. That appeals to some people and not others. Some people really like the way that this kind of model allows for storytelling from beginning to end, whereas others (like me) find the limitations maddeningly irritating and do not like being led along a linear path, particularly when there are so many non-linear alternatives available (both offline and online). So, ultimately, I think that NWN and NWN2 and all of the amateur stuff that's developed based on their toolsets are all more appealing to those who like a classic, linear, storyline oriented approach, and won't appeal to those who like a more open-ended approach to their gaming.
Anyway the reson i am not posting lately is because , you guess ...
I am playing NWN2
Yes. It is true. The game is incredibly bugged. It was rushed out the door. The camera sucks and game runs like a hog on valium. The character models are , well mediocre - and lot of animations are missing. Companion AI is comparable to a moron in sandstorm.
Yet somehow i am having a damn great time playing.
I wanted to play real RPG for few years now. Unfortunately Oblivion didnt quite cut it above very good graphics. And there is nothing else there that is not just hack&slash. NWN2 has a terrible launch. But even like this its a damn best RPG available. And if you are D&D fan , you are going to slobber just from plethora of class, race, prestigue, feat, deity choices available in the game.
People are pissed right now because of rushed launch. But i am just happy , i got to play the game allready, cause i was down right bored with what gaming market has to offer ...
But you can wait..if you want...

Can you help me how to open the ports needed to play online?
First off you can connect only to a server printed in white. Not grey or red.
Second , and this is the thing people dont realise. You need to have a Mod the server is running downloaded previously! So you see it is not firewall problem at all
How to download module. Well try clicking on description on the server you are trying to connect to. Usually there is instruction where to go and dl the module.
Now I know this is quite strange.(bu there is a good reason behind it) And belive me there is lot of discussion on NWN2 forums about this. I belive the upcoming patch will make modules automatically downloadable.
p.s
If it is closed ports problem , i dont know what ports need to be opened - contact support and they will tell you what ports are needed
Also i notice you are DDO/WOW player. Dont expect NWN2 to be your next MMO. In curent state it is a single player crpg that can be barely played online with buddies. I think that only in next two months real good PW will start coming out , and also multiplayer bugs will be fixed

Thank you very much! This clears some things up. Also, i have been board out of my mind, so WoW is really my only choice ATM. I got a 7-day free trial of DDO with NWN2.
I might just turn back to Diablo 2 or Dark Messiah. I do have NWN:Diamond Edition which also has "red" servers, so it might be the ports.

NWN1 diamond pack was a really good bundle
You see red servers because you need to patch. Also there is a thing called CEP - aka Community expansion pack wich is colection of community addons to the game (and it is huge)
And no
NWN2 is not MMO , it is playable as MMO ...you really have to get into it to understand
"Before this battle is over all the world will know that few...stood against many." - King Leonidas
I like that it is not a MMO, but still has tons of classes, roleplay, PvP, ect. with the ability to go online with other players and NWN2 allows you to make your own world.
Sure NWN2 has tons of classes and spells but c'mon guys do you really think the game is that good? The single player game stinks IMO. The maps are so small that it's rediculous, there is no freedom in this game. You load into a new zone, walk over to a group of guys and you get a cutscene, you kill them and get another cutscene. You go into the Inn you get a loading screen, kill some more guys, cutscene. You are asked to go upstairs and kill more guys, loading screen, kill the guys upstairs and loading screen to go back down stairs. Leave the Inn you geussed it loading screen.
Like someone said earlier, the maps are as restricting as Fable's were and there is just as many (if not more) loading screens as Fable.

No, as i said before
the game is certanly not that good. But the point with NWN games is that they are as good as you want them to be.
You want bigger maps with non linear scenarios? Thats just fine. NWN is a tool to make your own game , just as you want it.
You dont like Forgotten realms? Perhaps you want it to be in hell , or underwater? Or perhaps you like disckworld funny setting? You can make whatever you wish.
And if you not into it. Belive me , many others are.
NWN1 has 4000 modules written for it.

RDD doesn't have wings? No thanks. Glad I didn't buy it first day. I'll wait for a module that adds them, and for Obsidian to release optimizing patches. Because all I hear from people is how shitty the game runs on even some more high end systems.

If you are running xfire whilst playing the game turn off xfire, xfire causes this game to seriously slow for some reason, however the game is that poor and boring uninstall it and leave xfire on.

NWN1 has 4000 modules written for it. Yeah there are many people who like to play developer, it's true. I don't have the time for that, and frankly I have never been that impressed with what other amateurs have produced in terms of content, so I prefer to play professionally designed content. In light of that, I judge the game on the basis of the professionally-designed content standing by itself, and on that score ... it's pretty lacking.

Unfortunately that shows you never played any of custom made module.
Because most of them are much better than original singleplayer campain. Anyone would tell you that.
And also i see you are not playing NWN2 , because to call its single player campain lacking. Is like saying that WOW has boring LORE.

"Games like this were great around 2000-2001. It's 2006 and we have different expectations now, and NWN2 didn't really even try to meet those expectations, which is why people are complaining about it."
that's an excellent comment.. right on as well. That's the major issue with the game. Everything is just very average about it. The UI is ugly (character window, etc), everything is awkward. It's definitely not a next generation RPG, it has learned nothing from previous RPGs basically. It's clunky and messy. Even the XML code is buggy, when you play the game in high resolution you get this annoying "black box" surrounding the chat box, etc.. Poorly tested game.
There's also very little strategy to the game, you just zerg mobs and let the combat AI take care of your characters, it's disappointing (I was expecting something like Icewind Dale 2 or such, where tactics actually matter).
I love the leveling system however, that I found to be really well done (nice icons, etc). Much better than the one in Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale
This game will probably please those who enjoy player made mods, but I'd rather play games made by gaming companies and not gaming enthusiasts personally. That's just my opinion though
Originally posted by nomadian Hmm there was something about NWN I wasn't keen on which put me off the customs, I think it was it's top down approach. Is NWN2 the same?
You can choose between several different views. I use the "driver" camera which I find more comfy than the others.

If you're playing Oblivion I'd highly recommend using Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul mod. It makes the game sooo much better. http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=584600
