Why do u EvE fan-boyz need to drag WoW into your arguments.. always with the "go play a dumb mmo like WoW you need no skills for that, go play with the kids"
You all act like a 14 year-old boy who keeps picking on that girl at the back of the class cus your secretly fancy her but you dont want ya mates to know... get a grip and keep it EvE.
EvE players are NOT superior or more mature than WoW players.. there just as many kids who play EvE its just with ya massive 100,000 subs you dont run into as many. Because WoW is easy to play (PvE) and does not make you sit through a 3 hours tutorial does not make a dumb down game.
EvE is one of the only MMO's that growing, I even think WoW is dropping in Europe, mainly due to taking 2 years to release an expansion, but i expect a boost in the 16th when the expansion is relased.
But the attiutde of most EvE players here thinking they are superior and above others who play games like WoW or EQ realy is not helping, you talk of a good community in EvE but all I see are EvE players with big heads looking down on others. I intend to try EvE again soon (this time I wont quit 2 hours into the tutorial - I hope it changed) and I hope players in EvE are more pleasent than most who troll this forum.
I guess I posted mine wrong...it's not that EVE is difficult to learn...as Coffee says here...a 3-hour tutorial makes it boring to learn. Even Chuck Norris would fall asleep in the middle of that.
I asked for help and opinions on other EVE message boards about a year ago, back when I was actually trying EVE, and like Coffee states, a lot of the hardcore EVE players came across snobbish. It was like listening to MAC users complain about PCs...bunch of elitist snobs. For an example, go check out the post from a guy who was trying to decide which one of four games to try (one of which is EVE) and ended up being called a troll because the EVE people didn't read his post thoroughly. He posted the same question in all four game's boards and even said he was going to do this, but yet got flamed for trolling because he did what he said he was going to do. http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/106862/page/1
You need more people like Eschiava who don't act so uppity about the game to promote it.
Reborn, I have a question. When you Pay to play a MMO what do you want out of it?
I want an honest reply not " not EVE wich suckorz" because EVE is not about how many skill points you have but HOW YOU USE THEM. True more Sp means that you can do more, but even a noob can have a big impact ( goonswarm being a great example) and alot of corps are more then willing to have a new player join then ( were else are you going to get willing cannon fodder ) and a corp that is worth staying with will help the new player with ships, skill books, equipment, and other stuff so the player can have a reliable chance in makeing the corp grow.
Are there crappy corps out there? hell yea!
Are there players out there that go after new players just for the fact that they can annoy that player to the point were they quit? hell yea!
is there lag when ever there are more then 200 players in one system? yea but that getting better.

I asked for help and ... EVE players came across snobbish. ....
Part of the problems with MMO's is that they tend to reflect their target market. WoW is considered a kids game, Why? Because when you get into the game, you realize that there are a lot of 12 year olds playing. Is there anything wrong with a 30 year old playing the game? No, but clearly, the dev's had ease of use in mind when they put the game together. There's nothing wrong with that. As for EVE, EVE is an extremely complicated game, there's no getting around that. Took me quite some time to figure out how it all works, and I'm a programmer. I think you'll find that a lot of the people who play EVE are like me. Professionals, in their Mid 30's. Do we seem a bit snobbish sometimes, I guess maybe, I know some of the crowd that hang out with can be that way some times, just comes with the territory. Is the Tutorial Boring? Yeah, I think it is, I just turned it off and learned everything I needed to learn from my friends, but you see that's another beauty of EVE. It allows you to play however you like. I've heard the Tutorial has been improved, but I haven't tried it lately. I can tell you that with the massive complexity of this game, I really don't see that improving by much. A lot of us left Star Wars Galaxies because we liked the complexity of the game, we liked the fact that certain items have to go through several complex processes before they can be manufactured, invented, reprocessed or whatever. When they changed the game to "Dumb it Down" so to speak, a lot of us weren't amused and so we left and joined the only other option we had.... EVE. This may or may not be what you're into but it's why a lot of us like it and I for one can't understand why people seem to think that because they think something is bad or wrong, no one else should like that game, community or whatever. Everyone is different and has different tastes, if the original poster doesn't want to acknowledge the fact that you CAN in fact play this game with fairly low SP's, quite honestly, that's his problem. EVE is the ONLY MMO game that I know of that's been around for a while and is growing instead of shrinking, so obviously a lot of gamers disagree. For those who want simple games, where everyone can use the same equipment, and everyone can powerlevel, or macrolevel, Great, there are PLENTY of games for you. For those of us who like a challenge, who want a freeform adventure, who want to Roleplay together with 170K of our closest friends in a complex Universe where making the wrong choice, actually COSTS you something.... This is it, we don't have another choice, which is probably why we're all such rabid supporters of this game.
Fly safe and remember to wait for the Agression timer to be over before you log off
btw they just changed the tutorial with kiali to make it more exciting. 2 EVE has 200,000 subscribers not 100k cofee. Eve started of with something like 30k in 2003 and since then has been rapidly growing ever since.

He is giving up because IAC has been getting hammered over the last 4 months by constant invasions. I am not in IAC, but I operate out of IAC's distillery and bottleshop (their outposts), and know the situation there quite well. I have seen redborn dragon floating around several times and he is just upset because he is one of those, "I live in 0.0, but I'm going to cry foul if you gank me" types. Now, with basically no source of income since he can't mission and the IAC systems being locked down in battles 75% of the time, he is pouting and running home saying that the game is unfair to newbs. You want my opinion? Get in an alliance that fights with a little organization on it's own. Every time there is a call for gangs in IAC channels, I watch you guys form up in your 15-20 person frig / cruiser gangs. What a joke. Yeah when some other alliances come in to help with some big guns, you pull out yours, but all-in-all, IAC whips out cruiser fleets to fight BS battles, and BS's to fight dread / carrier battles.
I'm sorry Redborn, but your whining is just a joke.

You seem to be woefully misinformed. For one you haven't spelled my name right once, which leads me to believe you have never seen me as you can't even pay attention enough here to spell my name right. Secondly, the only system that was locked down for awhile was F4 while ISS and Co brought in their capitals and took out POS's. Thirdly, IAC is probably one of the most well orginized alliances when it comes to alliance operations and have some of the best FC's in the game. And lastly, drunkard frig swarms rape everything, cept 20 dreads and a titan, but then again, no one and nothing has EVER owned 20 dreads and a titan in one battle before.
I'm sorry, Daeandor, but it has become apparent that you are an idiot.

If you say so. I was hanging in JVC before IAC even moved in and have been watching how you guys operate there for nearly a year. But you are right. I am an idiot. Of course the interesting thing is that you are claiming that a newb has no chance at the same time you say "drunkard frig swarms rape everything."
At least you spelled my name right. I guess you know how to pay attention.

*sigh* I've already said it doesn't matter what you fly in the blob, anything is welcome, and unless you're going up against another blob, it's like being a low sec pirate picking on newbies/haulers/miners, it takes no skill (cept for the FC(s)). Small gang PvP is where the fun is, for me anyway.

The "I'll never catch a player who has been playing "X" long" is a popular one in this game. Well guess what...your right. Totally overlooked is the fact that you simply don't have too. Maybe you want to be able to step into an MMORPG and in a few months be equal to those who have been playing a couple of years but I don't. To me that just says at some point there is an imposed cap on how far you can go. There is no limit to how far you can go in Eve, however I have found that there is a soft cap on experience in regards to how many skills/skill points you can employ in a given role.
I started playing the game in early 2004. I played nearly two years and PvP'd about 80% of that time eventually ending up in one of the biggest pirate corps in the game. Due to R/L I had to leave late 2005 and even gave my char to a corp-mate. I returned to the game in early 2006 to begin anew.. literally years behind some of the players. This time around I wanted to be highly spec'd in one racial line as I figured it the best way to "make up ground" so to speak. I now have almost 12m sp., am highly spec'd in BC's and HAC's using projectiles, and really don't turn down many a fight with great success.
I have always also believed that while sp are important, to a point, experience is what makes or breaks you in the long run. There are many corps in the game that reach out to the starting player and offer up this valuble experience no matter what occupation you chose to persue. There is an excellent "school" that will show the budding miner/industrialist everything from mining, to erecting a Player Owned Station and maintaining it. The same applies to PvP. I can think of at least two VERY large corps that accept the new player and teach them the basics in t1 frigs and mods they even supply.
IMO, experience is the much larger hurtle (including training lines) then the said skill points. The good news is opportunities exist for those who seek them out. If there is anything that EvE does not do well, it's direct the new player to the vast information that's out there. This is however the nature of the beast and the climate of EvE. Unfortunatly many a player, through no fault of their own miss the big picture and try to go out and be that "jack-of -all-trades". It's quite true that if you attempt to compete with older players across a variety of professions you will end up none the better in all of them. However, I can tell you from experience that many of those generalized players, who have played many months more than myself, simply cannot compete with me given my specialization.
In short my advice to those thinking of trying out EvE but are put off by being a later starter is: Get good at something..before you try getting good at everything. Also use the many resources and contacts availible to you. The Eve forums are a great place to start.
I've been in the game for awhile, and I have as much or more fun starting and playing new characters as I do playing my original characters ( and a couple of them have pretty healthy skillpoint totals )
Success in the game is roughly 1/3 skillpoints, 1/3 equipment and 1/3 player savvy/ability....probably even more emphasis on player savvy/ability when it comes to activities like trade or pvp. Don't expect to own the universe by the end of your two week trial, but you truely can make an impact and have alot of fun in the game right out of the starting block.

hi DrC!!! i hope you are the same DrC as on EVE. it is great having you here too. we are never too many.

this is the best example about veterans not always having the upper hand. you see this guy i quoted? well, to this day, he has the highest skilled character ingame, DrC, with over 70 million sp if i remember correctly. and what is more important, 8 millions more than second place. you could think this guy would pwn you with tied hands. well, he wont. he is just a scientific/industrial character with a hugely expensive clone. probably, any 1-month old character could beat him 1vs1. hell, even a 1-day char with the new character creation system.
so, if anybody tells you that you wont be able to catch veteran players skill points wise, he is correct. if anybody tells you that you wont be able to compete, he is lying.
EvE is a team game, and everyone can help out if you give it some thought. When I first joined D2 (Dusk and Dawn, one of the most powerful 0.0 alliances in game), I had only 5 million skill points. I've found myself useful in just about every op we ever run, not to mention getting myself on tons of killmails. And I hardly ever got killed that much either.
It's all about finding a good group of people who are friendly and helpful. Anyone saying a new player is useless is a fool. It's always better to have an extra ship with someone who understands what they have to do then not have that player, no matter how many skill points you have. Sure you can't fly the best ships or use the best weapons, but every bit helps in close fights and a good FC knows that.
Besides what's the fun in starting the game with 60 million skill points and the ability to fly every ship?
People need to stop worrying about the power of their character and focus more on fun.
I think many of you are missing the op`s point ...and even though I dissagree he still has a point that I have herd from many people that I have tried to get to play .
In all or most all of the other mmo`s out there if you play your ass off you can reach the end game lvs in wow its at 60 for dedicated gammers I have herd that that lv can be reached in weeks ..I still havent reached lv 60 but I can only stand to play for a week to 10 days at a time .
In ddo it at 12 .....but in all these exp for kills/finished quests type of game you can see yourself grow by getting new weapons/spells equipment /hitpoints / spellpoints ...ect .....these achevements have an instant impact on your gamming ability ....
In eve that isnt how it works ....
in eve if you try to be all that you can be then be ready for a long training period befor you become truly good at any of them ..I have 4 accounts ..1 is a mutt can fly all the races ships t1 most of the t2 frigs 1 race hac and will be in command ships in 9 days he can also make all t1 equipment refine all ores with no waste with over 26 mil in sp you would think he would be leet but he isnt .....
there is mutch to be said about specilation I have another char specked in mining and all that you need to mine in hi /low/00 space he has 1 race frig at lv 5 -1 race cruiser at lv 5 -1 race battleship at lv 5 1 race indy at lv 5 all the main drone skills at lv 5 he can fly all 3 barges & the hulk ..he can refine all the ores with no waste ..the weapons these ships use are at 4 & 5 havent gone into spec yet as I am training all the armor skills for these ships to 5 and atm he has right around 10 mil in sp ....& would kick my main chars butt in 1 v 1 if I just let. them shoot at each other
If you read up on eve befor making that first char you will have a mutch higher rate of sucess in game with what you want to do ..this is prob were EVE lets its new players down the most ....as in most games you read a bit get the basic idea what a race & class does and its off to the races...
eve is a great game ..but so are many others ..I will play all the new releases ..but I will still keep my eve accounts going ..I stopped training once befor to go play wow & ddo & eq2 ..but never again..
It's all about finding a good group of people who are friendly and helpful. Anyone saying a new player is useless is a fool. It's always better to have an extra ship with someone who understands what they have to do then not have that player, no matter how many skill points you have. Although this could be said about any mmorpg, it is so true with EVE. Go out and have fun in a small fleet in your frig and you will never doubt EVE again...
