Right being a Fileplanet member I'm lucky enough to get access to Vanguard but 'small' problem with the game just on the installation...
..small matter of it requiring 17GB of diskspace, I kid you not, it's bad enough having to download the 6gb zip and unzipping it just for the installation, so it total you require 23GB just to install the damn thing I hate to see what this will patch up to...
What have these guys put in the game? it boggles the mind as this is the biggest installation file EVER just for one item..
Anyone who gets access to the game good luck to you, I think it's their tactic to make sure this is the only game you play as it's the only damn thing you can install

Ugh, I must have missed the earlier post where you explained how someone was holding you hostage at home with a gun to your head, forcing you to download Vanguard Beta.
Seriously, do you need us to call the police or something. Give us a sign... anything.

Anyway I'm paying FP for access to this kind of stuff, it's free so theres no harm in at least looking at it then disiding it's cack at least then I can't be accused of judging a game without playing it , just gotta watch what 'hidden extras' I'll be getting

and people are saying theyre NOT gonna play because they arent gonna give up that hard drive space? get the fuck over it
Ive heard EQ2 with all Expansions needs the same, or little bit more?
300gb diskspace is today minimum.

There are lots of graphics and sound files in the Vanguard client.
PS: You're not supposed to talk too much about what's in the client... read that NDA before posting about it.

As for the game size. WoW went from an orginial 2G game to i think 15gs?

..why.. In my time each year a new ground breaking game came out we would have to upgrade our hardware.
soon, games became bigger and hard drives came out. Yay for hard drives and no more swapping floppy drves! You needed to upgrade hard drives what seemed at the release of every major game. When that wasnt enough, games started coming out on CD and most games where larger than the actual hard drive itself. I remember how pissed my mom would get every time I would buy a new game and it wouldnt load on to the hard drive.
so be glad you dont live back when the Home PC was being pioneered and upgrading hardware was very common. It wasnt too long ago when upgrading video boards alone was standard practice just to be able to play or load the game. Now we just do it for the most part, for better FPS
this cost $2500 bux when I was 16
8MHz proc
256 KB RAM
one 5 1/4" floppy drives
NO hard drive
4 color CGA graphics
so hey..screw you and you 23 gig beta :P
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
Programs now a days take a lot of space. I thought a 200gig would be good, but man I've used 49% of it.
My next build is going to be at least 500Gig
Yeah, EQ2 at launch was at most maybe 5GB installed if I remember correctly. Now of course it's up past 7.5 or so, closing in on the big 8GB. Next expansion maybe
I'm waiting to get my key before installing the beta client. But I am looking forward to trying it out and hopefully helping find some buggies.
They are using SOEs patching system. EQ2 is almost as big and patches usually take less then an hour. Very large changes like a major expansion use a background/preloader that pulls most of the files down before the main patch so provided the servers come up properly the game is up and running by the time you get home from work. First install patches are big, but that's about it.

lol... sorry, I thought it was pretty obvious that I was just teasing you with this post .
It's alot of space but lots of betas have been this way, EQ2 was on order of 8gigs during beta, MxO was around 10. Another game I am testing myself right now was a huge download, around 20 at the start and there has been an extra 8gigs since then .
Oh and watch that drinking... we don't want any DUI's here. (discussions under the influence)

Good point. During beta there is usually all kinds of debug code that bloats the size of the application. Removing this and fine tuning the final compile can save a lot of space.
Thats certainly on the larger side.
Though im a bit surprised at how little HD space people have. Personally I have 800 or so gig. Helps buying a new hd each time you put together a new rig :P
My EQ2 folder is 7,7G btw, everything included.
