Dang. Even Shae is getting sarcastic these days. Proof that MMORPG's can make any person jaded.
SoE does this because alot of their supporters are computer creator companies.
As for the game size. WoW went from an orginial 2G game to i think 15gs?
More files, More to do, More Fun?
1. It's even better than that! SoE itself MAKES computers! They don't need support only from other computer creator companies! (Ever here of the SONY vaio?)
2. Forget about what is "heard". WoW originally took up roughly 5 gigs. Right now it is going on 10 gigs with all the patching done so far. The last patch itself was very close to 500 MB. Sooo... still a long way off from being 15 gigs LOL!!
=================================
I do agree with the OP ... a modern mmorpg that is brand new, should not be more than 20 gigs. It does raise some alarms.
So far, the biggest mmorpgs - at release - took up between 5 gigs to 10 gigs (and that is over streaching it.).
How much memory will VG take up AFTER release? After it gets the usual tons of patches all mmorpgs recieve? How about after its first expansion pack? VG litterally will/could end up taking up 50 gigs after 1-2 years of release LOL!!!
Sigh....SOE has nothing to do with the performance of Vangaurd. Another person without a clue. Oh and SOE does not make computers Sony does. SOE is strictly a software and publishing house. Now go back to looking for government conspiracies and wearing your tinfoil hat.
1. I was not talking about SoE running VG. I was commenting on the subject that SoE caters to companies that make computers. Re-read my quote that you quoted - "They don't need support only from other computer creator companies." I brought up the fact that SoE, which is hand in hand with Sony, is involved in the same company that makes its very own computers.
2. Next, Sony IS SoE. Waaay back when SWG (now known as CSWG) was in developement, the game DEVs posted how Sony aka SoE, was going to push for SWG to be able to be played on the... SONY Playstation 2.
2b. When Smeadly wanted to get financing for EQ the first time, he went to the CEO of... SONY. Smeadly got smacked upside the head. He then went back to the CEO of.... SONY, a second time, and finally got financing to make EQ. SONY later pulled the plug on EQ right before it was finnished, forcing Smeadly to make his own company to finnish EQ. Smeadly then sold EQ back to .... SONY. SONY then put Smeadly as head of SoE. Who does the head of SoE answer to? Sony runs SoE. Sony makes mmorpgs. Sony makes the Vaio computer, which ya better believe they make sure SoE makes all its games friendly for..... as well as tons of other electronics. All of SoE's games most definatly cater to Sony's computers. Sony even owns one of the largest movie theater chains. (Lowes. Changed to Sony. Then changed back to Lowes. It's because of a very little known riot in NJ that Sony changed the name back. Sony still owns it though.). Sony has its own movie production studios aka makes its own movies. Sony has its own recording studios aka makes its own music.
it was halarious seeing the EQ2 trailor playing in the Sony owned Lowes theaters. In buisness this is known as forming a self sufficient circle. Some buisnesses have partial self sufficient circles. Some have full SSC's. Some have SSC's of various sizes. SONY as far as I know, has the largest, and closest to 100% SSC out of any buisness on the planet. Go to a Sony owned theater, see the EQ2 ad... say before Lord of the Rings, or whatever fantasy-type movie that is guaranteed to have fantasy-lovers watching aka the perfect target audiance for EQ, and EQ2. Go buy a Sony computer to play EQ2 on. Talk about insane FREE advertising! And ultra effective too!
2c. With all that said... something you and others might find intresting: (make of it whatever you wish )
3. I have no idea what you are talking about when you mention "tin foil hats" etc. Perhaps start another thread in General Forum 'Off Topic' area, and we can discuss whatever chip you have on your shoulder towards me? If it's an attempt at name calling, I have not called anyone names in this thread, so then... why are you trying to start?
i cant believe people are pissing and moaning about the hard drive space a game is taking up... i mean i just cant follow that train of thought. this is 2007, games are HUGE... textures, etc etc...
and people are saying theyre NOT gonna play because they arent gonna give up that hard drive space? get the fuck over it
yeah, just because this game takes up 5 to 10 times the space of a normal game. it also does laundry and makes you lunch!
three for you.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
Dude, dude, seriously---all you had to do is file a complaint with the proper government agency, we've seen complaints about file size before, we know the deal.
Thats the dumbest thing I've even seen.
or is it the funniest thing you've ever seen?
these are NOT the droids you are looking for...

It's a matter of opionion really as to how any one of us will respond to Vanguard. Some will love it and of course some will hate it, with people sitting everywhere inbetween. For me, when a new game is released I look right to the graphics. From what I have seen, Vanguard looks to be pretty solid, but there are few screens and even videos I've been able to look at that leave me with a little reservation. It's hard to explain but in some ways the landscape almost reminds me of Dark and Light - just a flat textured ground with no vegitation, but of course this could be something that was not set in the graphics options so will have to wait and see. The other thing that turns me off is the way characters move. The character animation in the video I saw of the dog like mount running around the world seems wrong somehow. But in all fairness to the game screens and ingame video usually don't do the game itself justice.
I'm not a crafter by nature, but I do like the crafting aspects I'm hearing about and I love the ability to buy land, make a house and then furnish it. I remember way back when Horizons came out my wife and I buying a couple of polts and setting up shop. As for the grinding - meh. It's just like every other game out there so no big deal to me as I'm used to it.
Was really hoping the open beta would start today, but from what I've been reading on the Vanguard forums doesnt look like it will be today, but they didn't say it wouldnt either.
Ugh, I must have missed the earlier post where you explained how someone was holding you hostage at home with a gun to your head, forcing you to download Vanguard Beta. Seriously, do you need us to call the police or something. Give us a sign... anything.
ahh the morons are out I see. Or at least those with the lack of ability to see that just about every single post on this board falls into the same huh category.
As far as the original intent of this thread. Vanguard is epic eq on steroids. Lots of fluff without much substance. Its brad doing EQ the way he originally wanted it.

what they arent telling you is that the average joe and jane will not be able to own a house. There will NOT be enough available to accomodate even a third of the pop on a server. It was stated that they intend housing to be for the elites r us of Vanguard. This same philiosphy fits pretty much everything in the game.
As far as I can tell from everything that Brad & Co have put out about Vanguard it's intended to be a game which caters to the "Powergamers" of the MMO community. Everything I have read indicates this.
Crafting: Resources used in crafting the best items are in extremely dangerous, raid-only, type areas.
Housing: Will be very exclusive and only the most powerful players will be able to own/afford.
Top end Gear: Raid Centric, even the crafted stuff, see above note re: Crafting
TBH I'm not really that interested in Vanguard. I'm sure Sigil will release a quality product but after playing EQ1 for several years back when it was "new" I really don't feel like going back to a game in which it takes 6 hours to get anything accomplished because everything requires raiding. Been there... done that... don't have that kind of gaming time anymore. I'm sure there is a market for it but I am also fairly sure I'm not a member of that market. I no longer have the time, or the inclination, to spend more than a couple hours a night playing. And wasting that time on a 'raid' every night is not my idea of fun. Never really was which is what caused me to quit EQ eventually anyway.

Small update on the 'beta issue', got my email this morning saying 'welcome to the beta' woot... WTF.. FP have finally made a note that VG is 'US only', after stating 'everyone' could access the beta and 'should' d/l early.. normally I wouldn't mind but this is bull typical SOE we'll deside one thing then chance our minds last minute so there 17g wasted
Added: Holding my hands up high and addmitting I've jumped the gun, us Euro players getting 'access' on the 8th, but I only found THAT out by trolling thru the offical forums, FP still gave no indercation that it was intened US only first, plus their emails/pre-beta ads still said 'subcribers' not 'limited area subcribers', well if they said the latter they would have gained so many 'new' subs would they? Grrr.. Me no like misleading things
After few months this game is dead it cant compete with the big ones wow l2 gw forget vanguard bad pvp endless grinding nothing realy new here casuals will have hard time and its carebear game:P
Hope to build full AMD system RYZEN/VEGA/AM4!!!

Been in the beta. It's a good game and will do fine.
It won't be toppling WoW by any means, even though I do think it's a better game than WoW. But it will do fine on it's own. Probably somewhere north of 100k subs and south of 500k subs is my guess.
Dead? No... next "WOW"? No
It'll be a good game. It's got it's issues just like any other. But I do think it's features are better than any other class/level title out there. Shame though... if they'd gone with a skill based system I'd actually have played this game after release. As it is I have no intent to buy it. I'm tired of class/level grinders. Beta was good fun though.
NDA is lifted. Expect to get your theory quite thoroughly debunked. Vanguard isn't what it was HYPED to be by the rabid vanboi's but it is a quality product that will do ok on it's own.
Personally I'm dying for the LOTR NDA to get lifted

I remember when 250MB HDs where really high end.
You can get a system pretty cheap with 160GB these days so 23GB isn't that bad.
