man i only have 80 gig and thats more then enof tho i keep all my setups and i still have enof but if evry game is going to be 10 gig well then i'l need a bigger one lol
SoE does this because alot of their supporters are computer creator companies.
As for the game size. WoW went from an orginial 2G game to i think 15gs?
More files, More to do, More Fun?
1. It's even better than that! SoE itself MAKES computers! They don't need support only from other computer creator companies! (Ever here of the SONY vaio?)
2. Forget about what is "heard". WoW originally took up roughly 5 gigs. Right now it is going on 10 gigs with all the patching done so far. The last patch itself was very close to 500 MB. Sooo... still a long way off from being 15 gigs LOL!!
=================================
I do agree with the OP ... a modern mmorpg that is brand new, should not be more than 20 gigs. It does raise some alarms.
So far, the biggest mmorpgs - at release - took up between 5 gigs to 10 gigs (and that is over streaching it.).
How much memory will VG take up AFTER release? After it gets the usual tons of patches all mmorpgs recieve? How about after its first expansion pack? VG litterally will/could end up taking up 50 gigs after 1-2 years of release LOL!!!
I was hoping they wouldn't go this route for beta invites, but they are.Vanguard takes up ALOT of disc space. It's nothing to get upset with or cry over. Most people have a ton of junk they can delete to make room if disc space is limited .If you need another hd, Buy.com had a 250 gig 7200 rpk WD HD for $67 a few days ago.
Well finally found room to install the damn thing.. I'm just fearing the patch days, no sorry patch weeks, with this game size...
They are using SOE’s patching system. EQ2 is almost as big and patches usually take less then an hour. Very large changes like a major expansion use a background/preloader that pulls most of the files down before the main patch so provided the servers come up properly the game is up and running by the time you get home from work. First install patches are big, but that's about it.
I like the way CoH patches...it try to patch when you log off, if you allow it, you know you will never be stopped from playing, when login in. I always allows CoH to patches while I go brushed teeths, check the news, clean dirtiest parts and then head to bed...

I agree. I really like the fact that CoH/CoV uses more fixed downtimes. I.E. if they say it will be down from 8:00 to 9:00 and it goes down at 8:00 and comes back at 9:00. EQ2 will set a 1 hour downtime starting at 8:00, and it does go down at 8:00 but could be up at 8:30 or it could be 9:15 you don’t know exactly. I’m not usually home during downtimes but when I am it’s nice to know exactly when you can sit back down and begin playing. When I was playing WoW an 8:00 downtime could mean the servers still weren't up when I got home from work.
I just played the Vanguard Beta a few weeks ago, let me say one thing, the size of this file will be explained the minute you go in. This game is amazingly well created in the aspect of the enviroment, characters, weapons, special effects. The problem is i think they made this game just like they made EQ2, Hey here is a new game GO BUY THIS VIDEO CARD it will make the game run better. GO BUY THIS HD. If you look at the SoE site they have advertisements for Vid Cards and Comps that are meant for Vanguard. SoE does this because alot of their supporters are computer creator companies. If they made a game low spec they would lose becuase from playing Vanguard so far. Its not like its bad, but its EQ with better graphics and more classes. There is no pvp. It basically reminded me of GW graphics onto EQ. But trust me this game will go somewhere. When eq2 started IT SUCKED, IT WAS SO BAD. 2 months in a huge patch. Baam that game got railed up the list and alot of players liked it. So everyone should try this game atleast once, because it does have alot to offer but not in the beta lol.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Sigil made this game not SOE. Sigil determines what you wlll need to run it not SOE. Please stop spreading misinformation.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

Sigh....SOE has nothing to do with the performance of Vangaurd. Another person without a clue. Oh and SOE does not make computers Sony does. SOE is strictly a software and publishing house. Now go back to looking for government conspiracies and wearing your tinfoil hat.

*clears his throat and begins to speak in an elderly ..scratchy voice* ..why.. In my time each year a new ground breaking game came out we would have to upgrade our hardware. soon, games became bigger and hard drives came out. Yay for hard drives and no more swapping floppy drves! You needed to upgrade hard drives what seemed at the release of every major game. When that wasnt enough, games started coming out on CD and most games where larger than the actual hard drive itself. I remember how pissed my mom would get every time I would buy a new game and it wouldnt load on to the hard drive. so be glad you dont live back when the Home PC was being pioneered and upgrading hardware was very common. It wasnt too long ago when upgrading video boards alone was standard practice just to be able to play or load the game. Now we just do it for the most part, for better FPS this cost $2500 bux when I was 16 8MHz proc
256 KB RAM
one 5 1/4" floppy drives
NO hard drive
4 color CGA graphics
so hey..screw you and you 23 gig beta :P
Hahah I remember my first 14,400 bps modem cost me around $340 bucks. The first computer that I owned was a 386 SX-33mhz with 16MB of RAM and 40MB hard drive... 16MB was BIG back in those days and it had a VGA colored monitor (back then standard PC had green monochrome monitors or paper white greyscale ones). The whole setup cost me $714 bucks. My first laptop was a Pentium 133 mhz with 64MB ram... it cost $1500. Computers are a luxury item just 10-15 years ago for us old farts. So count yourselves lucky you young whippersnappers :P
If you think the diskspace requirement is crazy, just wait till you start playing and see what horribly low FPS you get. They need to do a lot of tuning if that game is to make release.

I'll be a very sad panda if my $500 ATI Radeon X1900 512MB card can't at least do 60 fps with Vanguard.
I'd be more worried about your hard drive than your graphics card... As in, moving those 18 gigabytes to and from memory and virtual memory. But whatever. That does seem pretty big.
I wasn't allowed to play cause my graphics card didn't meet requirements lol. I have an okay one Geforce 5700 but maybe I should have read minimum requirements before downloading allll that and trying to play .
I could subscribe to Fileplanet and sign-up for Vangaurd beta, but meh, I think it's just another EQ2 with massive contents that seems endless.
I don't know. I am currently elsewhere with my laptop. I only have Core 2 Duo with Intel Extreme Graphic with 128 MB shared. Now, I am not sure if Vanguard: Saga of Heroes will support this graphic chipset. I was hoping that this game will use my other "core" from the CPU and use it as a graphic processor- as a emulator that is. But again, I doubt it.
I wonder if its possible to play off an external hard drive. In any case, I can't even download it. The download manager I have right now cancels when trying to download anything bigger then 2 gigs.
you kids are to funny , harddrives are dirt cheap and if you dont have the hardware to play vanguard goodluck playing any new releases in the future, myself ive been waiting for windows vista to come out and am building a new computer that will rock any game out there ,My wife can have my old one which will play vanguard just fine lol
I cant wait to play this game, My computer is all ready and up to current date with all the newest Tech (dual core)! Plus I just upgraded my computer monitor to a Samsung 22" LCD HD. So I am so ready for this game to come out, cant wait to get into the beta.

A lot of you are saying that "this is the future! files and programs are going to be average 20gb's!" I just have to tell all of you, your wrong. The average GB for a program goes up to about 1gb every year 1/2. Graphics can go oh so far. It will never come to graphics being so real you can see the pores in the skin, or the scalp of the head. Only in cut scenes will there be such intense graphics. If Vanguard wants to make their game to be 20gb, let them do so, they know they won't have many people playing.
Also, just to point out, the program that takes up the most memory on my computer isn't even an MMORPG. Its A Bard's Tale (you guys should try it, its really fun, and funny ) It takes up around 5gigs. I should also state that I have DnD, WoW, EQII, and SWG on my computer. The 2nd place for most memory is WoW.
Hey... the bigger, the better! it means this game has MORE detailed graphics, more detailed textures, more detailed models, more detailed animations, more detailed characters (female chars are even more tdetailed then just more detailed), more sounds, more mobs, more trees, more water, more "stuff", more eveything.
I doubt very much that they have a 5-10 gig file filled with FFs just as a place holder. MMMMKAY?
I do hope, however, that they will have a simple(small size) installation program that will ASK the player what type of game he wants to experience, at which point the player will pick if he wants to be blown away with graphics at their full glory (and DL staggering 20+ gigs of those graphics) or scale things down to smaller size client download, while quietly moaning in jealousy over someone else "bigger" part... of the computer. The screens ive seen are magnificent and full of details. Just like with Eve, I can see playing a trial for a few days just to make screenshots and use those screenshots on a rotating list as a windows wallpaper.
PS: My advice, spend an extra 60-80$ and buy a SATA HDD (250-300 gigs if you find it on a sale), buy a box to hold it (you dont realy have to, but its highly recommended for extra 15-30$) and you have an external HD. You can swap those HDDs like HUUUUUUUGE floppy disks. Then you can be all the download whore you want and still have more then enough room for 20+ gig games.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

Um... I'm sorry, but you're wrong. I don't think any explanation is needed, as people with a semi-intelligent mind about technology should know. In fact, I think games with graphics that shows the pores in the skin already exist. Look harder.
