Or: 10 reasons not to play The Matrix Online
After reading the re-review I decided to try TMO again. I found it hard to get any enjoyment or sense of achievement. For me as for many others, the game is dying. Here are the 10 points which bugged me the most.
1- The GrindNothing has changed, to level up you basically do the same missions over and over and over and over some more. Same thing..speak to this NPC, pick up this item from desk, upload item, kill NPC..Repeat 800 times until you reach level 50
2- PvPUnlike games like WoW or other games where the PvP has some meaning to it, in TMO you will only duel or the never ending hardline battles. The PvP and classes are not balanced and you will most of the time end up zerged or zerging.
3- CommunityYou can tell the numbers aren't there. The city may be vast but besides a handful of areas, it is dead and empty. Going through the districts on afternoon I counted not more than 36 players on the busiest server, most of the day it is agonizingly empty. And the community itself is mostly elitist , trashtalking or tight groups rarely including newbies. The community will rarely help you learn and improve your pvp skills, specially if you aren't in their org or crew.
4- ContentNo end game content, the rare features are either more missions or farming NPC. Repetitive and boring.
5-RoleplayingThere is
some roleplay in TMO. I looked for it and spent some time at the RP hardline as they call it, Unless you are included into the small rp community, the most you will see is the meanignless theological debates on a bench. TMO has a lot of emotes and clothing but nothing else can be used for roleplaying. Items can't be dropped or held.
6-FavoritismDevs and LESIG are looking after their
friends. Other than a flupke, the only way to catch a live event is if you know the right people's derriere or if you have 5,000 posts in the forums.
7-Customer ServiceCSR have no clue and little motivation to help players. You may never get your account or items back if theft or bug happens.
8-Bugs and exploits
Obviously every game has them, but I have never seen it at the scale of TMO. Stacking, broken benches, using emotes to track, mission bugs still around.
9-Even the devs are leaving
Devs are taken away to work on the DC comics mmorpg. The one and only reason SOE bought MxO in the first place. The dev team is a massive..3, they have more forums moderators than game developers, it tells you a lot.
10-Your money will be invested better somewhere else
There are tons of better games to play or buy flowers for your girlfriend. The frustration and money spent in this game isn't worth it, even more so that it may well be dead in a year.
Comments
Theres a number of exagerrated and ungrounded comments in your post but as im about to go out for the night i will not point them out yet.
For now i will merely say, to each their own and i ask you state these 'points' as opinion rather than hard fact in any further discussion.
Nothing has changed, to level up you basically do the same missions over and over and over and over some more. Same thing..speak to this NPC, pick up this item from desk, upload item, kill NPC..Repeat 800 times until you reach level 50
Yea, the standard missions are always the same, and there isn't any other realistic way to level up.
If that's what you decide to do (unlike me and several others), it sucks.
2- PvP
Unlike games like WoW or other games where the PvP has some meaning to it, in TMO you will only duel or the never ending hardline battles. The PvP and classes are not balanced and you will most of the time end up zerged or zerging.
It doesn't have a standard gameplay purpose, but it can be given a purpose in live events and the like. But yea, might be right.
3- Community
You can tell the numbers aren't there.
I believe that this is what you've experienced, but I also believe this is quite a one-sided experience. It's been a long time since I relied on help and answers myself, and they were quite helpful back then... and from what I read on the forums, there are still many people around who offer their help all the time - *shrugs*.
And oh, I kind of like empty
4- Content
No end game content, the rare features are either more missions or farming NPC. Repetitive and boring.
Yea, all you can call end game content here are the final instances of levelling content - the last Pandora's Box, the last hideout, the last construct boss. The Zero One quest starts at level 40, so that doesn't qualify, aswell.
Instead, for example, there's ongoing storyline content, for those interested - I bet not every other game has that.
Also, I wouldn't call weekly story missions, 51 neighborhood contacts and four Pandora's Box arcs "rare" - and the missions there are not standard, meaningful and actuall storytelling tools.
Have you missed a few game features, or do we just speak different languages?
5-Roleplaying
There is some roleplay in TMO. I looked for it and spent some time at the RP hardline as they call it, Unless you are included into the small rp community, the most you will see is the meanignless theological debates on a bench. TMO has a lot of emotes and clothing but nothing else can be used for roleplaying. Items can't be dropped or held.
Nice you joined right now. A new item type that can be dropped and is dropped by teleportation or death has just been introduced to the game.
And yea, RP props, as mentioned.
I know little about pure player RP, but from what I've read on the forums, this experience of yours is also unluckily one-sided.
And there's at least some real decent RP in live events.
6-Favoritism
Devs and LESIG are looking after their friends. Other than a flupke, the only way to catch a live event is if you know the right people's derriere or if you have 5,000 posts in the forums.
I really wonder what makes you so sure.
I've seen players involved in private event meetings who obviously arrived not long ago, and don't know any Dev. I've seen a player heavily involved in an event who bashed the game not long ago (or something like that).
I'm far too active on the forums than it's sane, and I haven't got any live event invitation so far.
Plus, what my predecessor said.
7-Customer Service
CSR have no clue and little motivation to help players. You may never get your account or items back if theft or bug happens.
8-Bugs and exploits
Obviously every game has them, but I have never seen it at the scale of TMO. Stacking, broken benches, using emotes to track, mission bugs still around.
Which mission bugs exactly? If you mean the items disappearing because of full inventory, that one just appeared recently and is probably going to be fixed within a few weeks.
9-Even the devs are leaving
Devs are taken away to work on the DC comics mmorpg. The one and only reason SOE bought MxO in the first place. The dev team is a massive..3, they have more forums moderators than game developers, it tells you a lot.
I only know of one dev who went to DC voluntarily.
Apart from that, there are 3 devs I know who post on the forums. But does that mean that's everyone who works on the game?
One of the devs has like 10-20 posts in the forum in entirety. Does that mean he hardly works on the game and usually sits in his, erm, derriere?
And starting from this, are Devs who haven't even made a forum account non-existent at all?
Very moot point.
10-Your money will be invested better somewhere else

No population on the servers? No updates?
Tried the Matrix a while back and didn't like it, decided to jack in again 3 day's ago and must say it does llok better then i rememberd, but still i can not get used to the Kotor kind of fight/play style, the animations of the fights do look matrix'ng indeed, but i do miss the real feel i mostly get out of a fight that i'm really making a difference, the only difference i notice when using some skills in my hotbar is time, not a real sence of fight unfortunaly, the world seem'd empty until i found the option/setting and changed best framerate into best performance wich changed the world around me alott, more cars driving around, npc's walking around and sometimes some rl people, but overall the game became much more alive, wich helped against the emptyness i was feeling before i used this setting.I also found it wierd that even thought i have visited alott of different buildings(from the outside different) it seems all insides there are only like 4 different once, that kinda get anoying after a while also because most missions lets you go in/out of buildings.
I'm still hoping the trown in more charater/proffesions to make the world more alive, think shops wich needs crafters, so many things you could put in a game like the matrix as it reflects the real world in a way, so why not put some more real world stuff to do in hte matrix then only looking within the box and not outside the box, if they tried that Matrix Online might become something afterall...
Better graphics, worse performance / framerate.
I agree that the world is generally more interesting and diverse from outside than inside - but 4 different interior layouts really isn't what I've experienced.
Oh, and there are shops and restaurants around. If that's what you meant.
Interior layouts all depend on where you're being sent to in that mission - from what i can tell more or less each neighbourhood (with some repeats like the projects and residentials) have different interior layouts. Not to mention when you move out to new districts they all change as well.
I understand that from a newbie perspective (mara and tabor over and over again) that the layouts would be very limited.
I'm not having a go or anything, its just people need to start looking around and doing some research before they can accurately critisise.
I did indeed ment " highest details" and have no issue regarding performance/framerate, all work great (4400+X2/EN7900GT.Top/2x2048mb/X-Fi-platinum).
And i really do not mind you having a go or anything but you have read that i only made my comments because of me playing for only 3 days right? (about 6/7hours totaly) and also me apoligizing about my earlyer comments about the matrix online ? But from what it is worth i will defintily spend some more time in the matrix and visit some restaurant and shops, it just would be cool if you could own a shop or restaurant would make the game so much more alive ( or did i missout on that ability and is that possible?? ) dunno yet after only 3 day's of play, all i said was my personal opinion/experiance about the game at its current state so have no clue if other district look different till now or should i have noticed this already in 3 day's ??, so far only calling my main missions havn't done side-quests yet.......

Owning an apartment, a shop or any other part of the world is entirely impossible in this game. Sorry to disappoint ya.
Yea, there are some shops, restaurants, bars with bandroom equipment and bookstores around, but they're rather small and almost identical. The "clubs" are more definitely more interesting.
I wouldn't say it's exactly like this - you can still get the same interior layouts in other districts, even with the building or its texture a bit different - but in general, they really depend on the building type and are quite diverse in their entirety.

Not sure what game you've played but there are 3 or 4 types of interiors, and you CAN'T own your own shops player housing etc.
He's lying.
If you had thoughts of playing this - get them out of your mind... total waist of dosh unless you live on the west side of the States (or at least I think thats where the server is).. 2/10
Live long... In peace...
And please describe me these four types - maybe you even turn out right?
BabylonCone: starting from my very limited technical knowledge, if decreasing the graphics details helped you against lag, it was most probably your own computer, your connection or similar problems on your side.
That doesn't mean server or game cause lag is good because it SUCKS, but you might want to consider this.
And I'm living in Germany - I also have performance issues here (although not always; mostly, it runs just fine, sometimes it's fluent and perfect on highest graphics settings). So it might really have been your computer.
I apologize for my mistake, your posts are so filled with non sense and drift so far from the main point, I do get lost. Explain to me the many types, there are just a few, the buildings are all really the same few models, and the city is smaller than the barrens.
Saying it's his computer, when there is a history of players complaining about this is reachign a bit don't you think?
And from everybody who has technical knowledge on the forums, I've heard that if the performance quality decreases because of settings, it's the computer. Don't judge me.
As for the building types, it might very well be that you mean some four general types, while I, as someone who is more sensitive to minor variations in music of game worlds, might mean the subtypes.
I don't even know if you mean the shape/layout, or the textures, or whatever. Listen, just name these four types and then we'll see. It makes everything easier.
Aye, 'types' is somewhat vague, if you refer to different layouts then i can go mission in game for a bit and find you much more than 4 and screenshot them appropriately. If thats what it takes to disprove more of your falsehoods.
As a side note, i live in the UK (across that big pond from america) and get pretty much perfect performance. Whats ya RAM at mate? Having more than 1 gig is a godsend in MxO.
Maybe I'll just start with different looks of mission areas.
-There are squalid, but liveable apartments for one thing (several different layouts).
-There are also totally abandoned, broken and mildewed "apartment" floors with cobwebs, dripping water, flickering lights and broken walls (also a few different layouts).
-Then, we have some cleaner apartments with high ceilings, and
-multi-floor apartments in villas (few different layouts, aswell).
-Also some clean office floors - many different layouts.
One special example would be the "Court Houses" with ornamented white walls.
-There are dungeons with dark brickwalls (several layouts).
-There are white apartments under construction, also with broken walls etc. - if you've played Enter the Matrix, you might recognize them from the first Smith level.
-Then, there's International with its totally new versions of apartments and office floors - everything "asiated", and many totally new layouts and looks.
-Apart from that, there are big, multi-floored storage areas in warehouses, with large rooms and metal gangboards. Two entirely different types/layouts are placed underground, several others take an entire warehouse.
And that's just about mission areas. You don't want me to start going on about lobbies and ground floors, although maybe I decide to list some of them here later anyway. Or not.
The barrens in WoW. One area, is bigger than the whole of MXO.
You just described the same interiors, with different ceiling heights and rearranged furniture, lol.
I rest my case.
These interiors have different shapes, different sizes, different looks, different equipment, different feels. And I just listed mission areas.
So what are those four types you're talking about? You really should respond to this.
You just described them. The same couple rooms with rearranged furniture and wallpaper.
Tell us what there is to do in these rooms.
What fun lies in these buidings?
In mission areas, there's nothing fun to do except missions. The mission system and the way it shows live scenarios is quite primitive and schematic, but that doesn't affect the look of these areas, which is what we're talking about here.
If you refuse to back up your points and start posing avoiding questions furthermore, this discussion will lose any sense it might still have, and I'll just cease it.
Ok so there are a couple of apartments, that look nearly identical, with nothing to do in them.
Great selling point.
PS: You can't just change the main idea of a thread at your whim to make yourself "fell like you're winning."
PPS: You back up my points with your ridiculous description of the uselss/boring mission areas.
The OP is right in every sense.
You lose.
They don't look nearly identical, there are not just apartments, I've described examples and differences all along, you can't disprove it and still aren't able to come up with your four types or anything that disproves the differences and types of differences in my example.
"Nothing to do in them"? Hello? There are still missions, which have their flaws in gameplay, but can be very interesting to some. And it's the main type of content and grinding anyway, so "nothing to do" is wrong.
Thanks for proving the lack of any reason to discuss with you. Your main points: everything's bad and boring, this game sucks.
This debate is over, unless you come up with something worth responding to.
There is no debate, the people have spoken. MXO has no content, is boring, repeatitive, has a small nasty community, and everyhting the OP said is true.
