I have to agree with the previous poster. I got into the beta 3 weeks or so ago and with some casual playing I knew that Vanguard was not for me. I see massive potential in the game but I couldn't help but flinch at some of the animations and art direction. I liked most of the character models and the graphics and lighting were superb, but the rest of my surroundings seemed a bit static to me. The music and sound were also a big disapointment. The sound effects sounded stale and some of the music sounded like soft-core porn soundtracks. I'm not a pessimistic person but this game had me focusing on its problems more than I could its possitive aspects. I'm sure its a great game but frankly it failed to pull me in.
I personally have been in since they started bringing people into the beta... beta 2 maybe? I dunno it seems like I have been in for well over a year, and not a good year in my opinion.
Ignoring all the marketing hype and BS spewed forth from sigil, soe and brad mcquaid Vanguard is by far one of the worst experiences I have ever had as a beta tester. The quality of the game is sub par, there is absolutely nothing new being brought to the genre apart from diplomacy... and that isnt even something important to the gameplay. Graphics and animations are mediocre at best. I run the game at 1600x1200 high settings and though the trees look pretty, thats it (and thats thanks to speed tree, not to sigil). My system currently is pentium dual core 3.4ghz, 2gigs of ram, ati x1900xtx all liquid cooled and everything and the game just does not look appealing in the least. Everquest 2 looks far nicer and the character models are far better done.
Seeing as how they have lifted the NDA they arent going to do much more in terms of changing things.... Here is an example of starting a brand new shaman yesterday morning. Talk to the NPC right in front of you, he wants you to go pick some grass for him. So you head off down the path real quick and you run your mouse over the ground til you see an ! next to the pointer. Run over to it and right click it. wait wait wait pop, the grass turns into a monster. No worries im a shaman, I can heal and do a little bit of dps. First hit from level 1 mob takes me to half health, I click on the heal, nothing I die a few seconds later. (dont have to corpse run til level 7 at least lol). Check my heal spell, the one the game gave me I did not buy this or anything this is the level 1 heal spell. Cost: 396 energy (mana). Check my character I have 178 energy. Thats really well done. bug report it and start looking for a group to do the level 1 quest. Community is full of very poorly mannered individuals (since beta 4 went live) so log out.
Now I have had some better successes with other characters yes. Necromancer seems to be very powerful and able to do some things. Some of the warrior classes as well. The problem is its all been done before. Craftables are far worse than the items looted so you have to loot good things in order to be effective. You have to group, good lord do you have to group. You cant even chop down a tree by yourself you need to get a group together to go hack at it. No creativity in the quests, no real substance to either your own character or the gameworld around you. Nothing is done to make you care about who you are and where you are from.
There is an old saying that a fool is soon seperated from his money. Well, thats what sigil and soe are hoping for.
I played for a little while until I was kicked out of the beta.
The graphics are great , but that is about it , same old crap with 0 innovation of any kind.
I watched the dev's in interviews go on on about how the game is a miles stone in mmo's but the fact is , it falls short of anything innovative.
I hope Age of conan delivers or i'm going to be playing rappelz for ever lol .
Caravan system, fellowship system, player driven boats, flying mounts, huge world with no instancing, self bindable items, diplomacy sphere, craftable houses and ships...there are tons of innovations and I could keep going but it doesn't matter. You obviously don't care.
LOL, i just wonder what is up with that hideous "line" down the middle of your face.....i mean what, did you get sliced in half and magically mended where the magic user had a skill of 25? I also agree that the game is just not for me. I'm sure there will be staunch fans, there may even be folks that yelled so loudly about how great it was going to be that they will just be quiet and play it to save face, but I for one don't see my 50$ going to Sigil any time this year.....
All you who are ranting and raving that your FPS was terrible, it might be a shock to you but hey after 2-3 years you have to upgrade or build/buy a new PC to play the latest games. So if you can't play the game, this is an indication that your PC is a piece of shit and needs to be replaced. Get with the times or stand in the back of the line!

My frames where great, for the 15-30 minutes I was connected , the server crashes were really bad, I mean woah , I was lucky to geta 45 minute stretch in.
Well ya, thats bound to happen, it is beta after all...

Originally posted by anarchyart The graphics and artwork are so stunning as to be quite unbelievable. Combat is ball bustingly awesome and quests up the ying yang. Such a huge world and so much to do you will never be bored. The UI looks like WoW and the graphics are out of this world good. You can solo all you want but for some quests and dungeons you will really need a group. You can afford a horse at like level 8 (12 silver) and you can recall to your bind point once an hour.
LOL, I am not a hater, or a troll, but I feel compelled to respond a little bit to the original post with my opinion on these topics.
I don't believe the graphics are bad, but also, i don't believe i lost my socks over them either, they were just average modern graphics. The fit and finish of them can use a lot of work, things like your feet half sunk into the ground as you walk, or that annoying line right down the middle of your characters head. Don't believe me, make a bald character and look at it.
The combat is no more inspiring or intriguing than any other modern game. They even added the whack-a-mole type reactionaries of EQ2 in their own way. DAoC had reactionaries that fit the category of reactionary, this is more like a random roll of whether you'll have the melee "power" to complete the chain or not.
The UI DOES look like WoW, so much so that it's an obvious rip off. I can't say i'm impressed when a company says "meh, we can't be bothered with the interface, what's a popular one? we'll just use that and do other stuff" I'm not saying that I don't like the WoW interface, however, it makes me feel like i'm playing a cheap knock off when I look at it.
You can solo all you want, at the rate of .00005% exp per kill, if you actually want to level and make progress in the game, you really need to group, group often and group again.
You can afford a horse at lvl 6 or 7 if you don't buy anything else and just quest your gear, which you can do. However, the last time I played in beta, with some +speed items, my horse gave me a total run speed of 100.8%. Now, i'm not sure about you, but i'm not impressed with .8% bonus. I should have looked to see if my characters without horses also had 100.8%, but I didn't. At one point, I had 179% runspeed and i was glad to have a horse, but that changed along the way and i never used the horse again <sighs>.
Recall once to bind every hour, well, that's been done, and a lot, nothing new there, just a convenience measure for the players of the game. Now why they would add that convenience, but give you a death penalty, trains and long travel times is beyond me, but it's there and waiting for you to use at your leisure.
I hope this is viewed as an "objective" review of some of the things that folks really were hoping would be better about this game. I was really excited about this game and really looking forward to it. After playing it, I canceled my pre-order. There are other games out there that, despite their flaws or shortcomings, offer much more to the player in regard to innovation. For me, this game is just a WoW graphics overhaul of EQ1 into a modern game model with systems and rules much akin to the games of yesteryear. I would like to report that at least the crafting isn't bad, but alas, I can't say it's all that great either. Crafting is slightly less tedious than EQ2 and significantly more time consuming than WoW or EQ1, to give you an idea. Overall, I would rate this game as a "good" game design, however, on the ability to deliver on the innovation and hype, I'm afraid the game is pretty much in the dumper for me.

Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz
GeForce 7900GTOC with 256MB ram

SATA2 HD with 16MB buffer at 7200RPM
etc, etc, etc. I pull 264FPS on the F.E.A.R. time test at a "non" supported resolution (1680x1050)
This game still lags for me with low frame rate <shrugs>
I don't think my PC is really behind the times, LOL
This will be a title with blind followers. It will be pointless to spar with them
I know, just trying to be the booming voice of reason. I encourage everyone to try it out. Some will find the game is for them, some will find it is not, some will find it downright distasteful, but in the end, I think they (sigil) had an opportunity to deliver a fun, exciting game, and they talked a good game, but when it came time to deliver, they just come up short in my humble opinion. This game may be their bag, but it's not mine.

It may be that I am just becoming a jaded gamer but everything that sigil has done in vanguard, apart from diplomacy, I have seen done before many many times, and with far better execution. For all the talk about the next generation I cant help but feel that that term is just marketing hype directed to the uninitiated or the naieve.
I petitions about player camping the altar on the "ffa pvp server" That is what got me kicked out . Apparently the player camping and killing spawners and instulting me by calling me a f!@#ing F@#g$T was in the right. The GM pmed me said I was no longer needed.
LOL, I got a "special" invitation to closed beta. Evidently I was allowed to play, but not allowed to provide any useful feedback in the forums since I was denied access. Seems I was an "industry" beta player and my input would not be needed.
And to correct myself, the line down your face/body seems to have been fixed, so at least they smoothed out "something" within the game, but i just logged in about 5 minutes ago and my newbie mount with +30 ground speed still only gives me a movement rate of 100.8%
Its just another look what i got on this raid pve game imo. I played beta 4 and I really liked the grafics, character setup etc etc but without the option of realm vs realm its just another EQ to me sorry. I dont understand why these new games dont offer end game pvp as it only adds to more content

For all the talk about the next generation I cant help but feel that that term is just marketing hype directed to the uninitiated or the naieve. I think we're all jaded. The ones of us who've been around this type of gaming market for 5 years or more. We've seen all kinds of good and stupid ideas come and go. Seen good games turned to trash, and seen trash games turned good and go bankrupt because they weren't good from the get go. I think the game designers are just going to have to realize a few distinct points.
1) when a game becomes a job, it's no longer fun, thus no longer a game, thus not worth paying to play....i get paid to work, not the other way round
2) the economy in the US (I realize not just folks from the US play these games, but things have been financially hard on other countries for many years, we're just catching up is all) is not really doing so hot in a lot of places, as things tighten down with the huge jumps in living expenses and minimal increases in wages, gaming accounts become luxuries that some folks will be more critical about before cashing out money they need elsewhere.
3) (this is the biggie) Gamers are customers, which makes us the audience that must be satisfied. It is not a privilege for us to play "their" game, it's a privilege for them to keep receiving funds from the paying customer for providing a service to us, the paying customer.
I have been burned on way too many games recently that were either just not good enough to continue the subscription or just down right not worth the money to begin with. I don't think I will purchase another game that I can't open beta or do a 7-14 day trial in. I would even consider that my time in beta was just that and try the trial out 6 months or so down the road, but in the end, gaming companies are going to have to work hard to earn my cash any more, as I think it is with a lot of folks these days.

LOL, they must harbor some special ill will towards you. The game is up now though, I just logged in a few minutes ago to check. 2 servers, Beta and Beta 2....both were near what I would consider max population and the game was just as laggy as it ever was in the other phases of beta.
I too was in beta, I uninstalled the game after a few days because the frame rate was unacceptable, seriously. I can play anything out there without problems, I ran EQ2 with a decent FPS and had the graphics settings up pretty high. Aside from that, here are my thoughts: You uninstalled a game that was in beta testing because the performance was unacceptable? Duh. They are asking you to 'test' the game, not 'play' the game. Well others of us stayed in, continued to give constructive criticism and now performance is as solid as some live games with further tweaks coming before launch. This game will out perform EQ2 by miles when its live. - Graphics: For the resources it takes up I'm really disappointed in this regard, it doesn't look that good, and it's artistically uninspired IMO... the world looks generic most of the time. "....for the resources it takes up". Perpetuating the myth of the size of this game. Spending any time at all on the beta forums, you would know that this game is not going to be the size at launch as it is now in beta, it is big, of course but unless you have a 40gig hard drive with every other mmo on it, no one needs to worry. My HD is 80 gig and i've got CoH/CoV, EQ2, EQ, GW, DDO and WoW installed, plus the enormous Vanguard. Don't worry about the size of this game. In addition, knowing that your frame rate was so unacceptable as to uninstall the game, I think it is fair to assume you weren't able to crank up the graphics to really see what the environment really looked like. Plus, having only been in Vanguard a few days, there is certainly no way you could know what even 5% of the chunks (zones) look like. Not that everyone will be able to crank it up, but I can assure you that this game is 1000 times more appealing at the highest performance settings compared to EQ2 at highest performance settings. - Gameplay: Nothing new, been there, done that a hundred times before... only it was more fun in those other games.I really don't need to say anything else. Obviously I didn't get to experience the high end content but if they can't even make the first few levels interesting I wouldn't have high hopes for "end game" content. In my first three days, I felt the same way sort of, of course my glass was half full and I thought, "The game mechanics are intuitive to a veteran mmo player". The basics are the same as previous games, but then the real game starts and the depth of Vanguard opens up and you realize you have more freedom then you've ever had in an mmo. PvP: Laughable. A few weeks back they plopped up a PvP beta server and Vanguard PvP was born. It's mindless ganking with absolutely no point to it at all, so if you like PvP with even less purpose than WOW then this is your game. I love this one....the forums made very clear (and I believe the patch notes too) that the pvp was launched WITHOUT a specific rule set. The devs wanted to gather info from testers and have internal discussions before applying a set of rules, yet still needed to begin testing pvp mechanics, for which they needed player input. It was almost as if they were 'testing' their pvp, a point lost on this guy. The one thing I did like is how bards can "compose"(well kinda) their own songs. Please don't take this guy seriously, he probably shouldn't have been testing (if he really was...this almost sounds like a buddy of his was playing and he was looking over his shoulder for 5 minutes and this is what he got out of it).
I played for a little while until I was kicked out of the beta.

And to correct myself, the line down your face/body seems to have been fixed, so at least they smoothed out "something" within the game, but i just logged in about 5 minutes ago and my newbie mount with +30 ground speed still only gives me a movement rate of 100.8%
It has NO meaningfull end game pvp.
Its just another look what i got on this raid pve game imo. I played beta 4 and I really liked the grafics, character setup etc etc but without the option of realm vs realm its just another EQ to me sorry. I dont understand why these new games dont offer end game pvp as it only adds to more content

Caravan system, fellowship system, player driven boats, flying mounts, huge world with no instancing, self bindable items, diplomacy sphere, craftable houses and ships...there are tons of innovations and I could keep going but it doesn't matter. You obviously don't care.
/shrug
Why did you get kicked out of beta?
UO - Craftable housing check
Swg - Craftable housing... check
Horizons - Craftable housing... check
Dark n Light - Flying mounts... check
Dark n Light - Huge world with no instancing... check
eq2 self binable items... check
SWG - Player made ships and transports and mounts... check
Innovations? Not hardly unless you are just waking up out of your wow coma.
Vanguard - game that has every one of the above mentioned features.....check
Taking formally disparate elements and creating something new is innovative. Hence Jazz music, Rock and Roll, PB&J.
