My boyfriend and I bought one pre-order in hopes of what Beta 5 would bring. He has been in beta since phase 3 so we were not completely ignorant to the games woes.

As it stands right now, neither of us are interested in the game BUT this is not release and things could take a turn for the better. We do doubt it however, I've seen this myself before with EQ2, devs saying this will be in, or that will come shortly after launch which is only that more insulting when you take into consideration that alot of the things they said would be in before launch were said to be so after pre-orders starting happening.

What happened to treating your player base properly Brad? Anyways.

Of course there's a great deal of potential here but I'm so tired of saying this about MMO. So as far as it stands wtih my boyfriend and I, we're going to keep an eye on beta phase 5 and see whether things get any better, if no then we'll take the loss of the deposit for the pre-order and forget about the game for good. If things take a drastic change then we'll buy an extra copy for both of us.

    We'll see how things go.

Let me say, I can run ANY game with all the graphic settings cranked up the the max. I have a monster system ( new Alienware, dual NVidia cards with over 1 gig of video ram, 2 gig ram, top of the line AMD precessor, etc) and this game runs horrible. I have to turn down the graphics settings way down for it to run descent. I know it is beta 5, but that means it is the polishing phase. This game should feel more complete and playable that it is at this point, IMO. I have not seen anything that makes me think this game will be the next great mmorpg to come along. It just feels like the same old, same old. It even has an EQ2 look and feel to it. Rightfully so, since these are former EQ guys. Maybe they will do some amazing things before release to make it live up to the hype both grapically and gameplay wise, but unless they do...I won't buy it. At this point, I think Conan may be the game for me when it is released.

Well I have been playing for about 20+ hours I guess.

I have leveled beyond 5 on 3 different toons : Orc Ranger, Wolfthingy Necro and Half Elf Monk.

I have tried to do as many different things as I could find in the noob areas and I have had a good wander around to take in some scenery.

It would be easy to just say "th15 g4m3 i5 teh 5uck"!

But Im not going to do that, even though its basically how I feel. Instead Im going to say this :

I followed VSoH development from pretty much day one. I think my forum inception date is early in 04, but I cant remember. I have watched it evolve in both design docs and screens, with interest ever since. As the day of open Beta drew closer I was more and more excited about finally getting to play the game BMQ has put his sweat into for over 4 years.

All I can say after giving this game a pretty fair run is.... Im amazed they are even bothering to release it.

Thats right it is so basic, so bland, so uninspired and boring as to make me question the sanity of the people behind it. If you have played EQ1 then you have played VSoH. If you have played EQ2 or WoW then you have played FAAAAAR better games than VSoH. In fact I hadnt logged into WoW for about 2 weeks before playing VSoH because I was trying to "let go of it" so I could make the switch to VSoH without pining for WoW. Well I logged back in and played almost all Sunday, becasue I wont be quitting WoW, in fact I will be getting BC and spending my MMO gaming hours for at least the first half of 07 in WoW.

As for this garbage some of you keep spewing about WoW being for kids and VSoH being for so called mature gamers. Well the mature gamers your referring to must have attention spans like 5 year olds on Rittalin because there is nothing to hold your attention in VSoH, unless you count falling asleep. Im 40 y/o, I have played everything on the list and some of them for years. I choose to play WoW because it is by far and away the best MMO currently running. If you call it simplistic, you obviusly havnt played beyond level 10. If you think its for kids, well Im living proof your wrong. If you think it is not for hardcore gamers, then your talking to someone who has put more hours into MMO's than 99% of you so..... ooooops.... wrong again....

Im not trying to compare the two (even though Im doing it) Im just making the point that VSoH just isnt going anywhere. It has Asherons Call 2 written all over it. I would even go as far as to predit this one tanking pretty quickly. No one except a complete newcomer to MMO's is going to find it anything other than more of the same old same old, minus any content. You can choose 4 or 54 content rich same old same olds.... so why would you choose a content poor, laggy, directionless, same old same old ??

If I had to sum up my take on VSoH into 2 words.... it would be Utter Disapointment, or Opportunity Lost. Both are just as fitting...

    Very very sad .....

Even with some bugs and performance issues this game is better than anything I have played since EQ1 and DAOC.  For those that buy into the negative hype the game is getting without even trying it you are going to miss out on an awesome experience.

I don't think anyone expects the MMO masses (which is mainly WoW) to play VG.  Its geared towards an entire difference audiencce.  Its for mature players who enjoy a challenge and the community in an MMO.

Remember,,,,the people enjoying the beta are in the game playing and not out on the boards trolling....there are currently 9000 people online playing and everyone I ask say they are hooked on the game already....its true there are bugs and some performance issues....but it is truly getting better every day....they patched twice yesterday for god's sake on a Saturday!

QFT.  Good post tones and very true.  And yes mine is already on preorder .
  • pre-ordered and paid for...Im definitely getting it..especially if its going to be added to Station Pass, which I have anyway with EQ2, Planetside, and SWG (I still dabble around with my BH from time to time)...this will just add another title to the list, so might as well.

In beta right now, and noticed a definite performance boost from two days ago to today.  As for game mechanics, I like the old EQ1 feel..its just my preference..not bashing anyone's tastes..If you don't like you don't like it, thats cool with me (Hey, Im one of those 1 people on the planet that never got into Halo lol) we all have our preferences.

The game STARTS at level 10.

Too bad.  It should start at level one and hook the player immediately.

    For me . . .

Old SWG did.  EQ2 did.  WoW did.  CoH/V did.

    Vanguard doesn't.

Was that supposed to be funny?

The graphics are fine, the gameplay and animations are horrible. No amount of puter power will change that fact.

i feel like level 10 is where the game currently starts to go downhill.  I got at least 20 characters to level 10 and none past level 15.  I just lost interest when the quests started to thin out.  With new skills only coming at the even levels, the log grind between level 12 and 14 wasn't much fun.  I suppose it would be better if groups had been easier to find or if I had a set group, both issues that only existed because it is beta.

To answer the original Question.  NO.  I will not buy the game at launch.  Up until a month ago the answer would have been a resounding yes, but that is when I thought the game wouldn't launch before it was ready.  I still expect to buy the game at some point, but I think I'll wait at least 6 months and see if it looks like they are actually ready for public consumption at that point.  By then the game should be packaged with it's first expansion, the one adding all the content that was originally scheduled for launch.  This game does have a lot of potential, but it is a long way from realizing it.  Seeing a bunch of tired old systems patched in simply to make this new launch date has been pretty disappointing.  Hopefully in a couple of months they will be able to get back to the promise of something new and innovative. It is far from that right now :(

I don't have any serious performance issues unless it is in a heavily populated area. I do have serious gameplay issues. VG is a jack of all trades and master of none. There isn't a single aspect of play that you can't list another game which is better than VG. Doing a hundred things half arsed isn't the same as doing one thing well.

Just plain old, you tried it, now will you buy it?

The grafics are nice and the gameplay is not bad but the PVP is pointless at this moment . If you play it on the pvp server just play any kind  of ranged and you will do fine. As the game is atm  NO i wont buy it

Ok, at 127 votes in the poll, it's about  evenly split, between those that will buy it, and those that won't. I purposely didn't put in a "I haven't decided yet" answer in the poll because I really just wanted to hear from those that had already made up their minds, and it makes the poll easier to read.

I think 50/50 is pretty good. Imagine any product you showed to people and tried to get them to buy it. You'd be happy if you could get 50% of those you showed your product to, to buy it, wouldn't you?

AA you know I respect your opinions, we have agreed about a lot of stuff in the past and I think you know I dont just say stuff lightly that I think I will regret later. (often )

If VSoH had even one original or redeeming feature (apart from being able to make an Orc Ranger which is suuuuper cool) in the hours I have spent playing it, I would continue to level to at least 20 before even coming on these boards and typing anything. The truth is that for me (and others obviously dont agree which is fine) it was just too boring to continue.

As soon as I realised I was not prepared to play this game for hours at a time, I immediately felt like I was wasting time by not being logged into my main on WoW.

I am a casual gamer these days, I only have limited time to put into my games. The days of 40+ hours per week into an MMO are gone for me, I just dont have the time between work, life and sleep. So if Im going to play an MMO its got to be fun to keep me going long term, right now I have a 51 Orc Warrior that has taken me over 6 months to get there. Some of you will be laughing right now saying stuff to yourself like "6 months to get to 50 you NOOB", well read back and you will see why, I only play maybe 10 hours on a big week. I really want to get to 60 and play through BC, Im in a good guild and we have fun.

So for a new MMO to pull me away from WoW, its going to have to at least grab me in some tiny way in the first 20 hours or so, which is far longer than most reviewers from commercial game sites will play this game for when they formally review it. If it fails to grab me, there is no way Im going to put 50 or 100 hours into it in some attempt to discover the microscopic jewel hiding in the centre of the slag pile.

From the second the character creation screen popped up and I quickly deduced it was about half as complex as EQ2, I was immediately underhelmed (a word used by many posters in relation to this game). Skipping through my yawns of delight as I logged in and worked out movement etc, we will move straight to the first 3 levels of questing for the few races I played. Simplest way to sum it up for me.... been there and done that with better grafix, better stories, better looking towns and starting locations, better lore, better music, better immersion, better initial "wow" factor, better everything basically in almost every commercial MMO from UO to CoV.

The thing that perplexes me most after you realise the depth of MMO programming experience behind this game is.... WTF where they doing for the last 4.5 years ?? Its like BMQ had this master plan when he created EQ1 (and it was a masterpiece) and then like some old musician who had only 1 hit album, he just rearanges the notes and chords somewhat to try and emulate previous commercial success. When what he has forgoten is, when he wrote the first album, he did it for the love of the music.

Sigil has just tried to take all the things they have learned and seen and put them together in an attempt to be commerically succesful. The result is a stitched together frankenstiens monster that just doesnt feel whole as much as it feels like a bunch of parts. There seems to be this assumption that because we have been told how freakin great this game was going to be, that we should see it as great despite what our eyes tell us. Even I find myself staring at the icon on my desktop thinking, "maybe I should log in again, I must be missing something, this cant be VSoH, VSoH was gonna rock!!". So I double click and my worst fears become a reality....

Im really sorry I dont like it guys. Believe me when I tell you I wanted to be in these forums being labled as such a fanboi supreme that I was being accused of only saying the game was so great becuase we have ads on the site. But the fact is I dont get anything from the ads... and Sigil would have to offer me a stink load of cash to do anything other than what Im doing..... which is just say.....
