If you look over the Empire Units from Warhammer Fantasy Battle, they don't have any elite units that are ranged, they are core units. What it looks like Mythic is doing is taking the Elite and Hero units and turning those into professions. And personally, I like the different profession system Mythic is using. The Empire can have Mages from any of the 8 schools of magic. The most devastating one is the Bright School since it's all about damage. I usually see Bright Wizards whenever I see the Empire on the battlefield, going with Bright Wizards was a good choice in my opinion. I am really interested in seeing what professions they are picking from my High Elves. Someone in another thread mentioned the Dragon Princes of Caledor. However, I don't think that person realizes that the DPs are a pure Cavalry unit. I wouldn't plan on seeing them.
As for the CC. It's about time. CC needs to not be available in a PvP game. It's no fun to go rushing into a battle only to have one person mez your entire group then slaughter your group 1 by 1 while you stand by and can't do anything. Mythic learned this lesson from DAoC. It is a much needed change. And what happens with buffs is they begin to become a require thing to compete. We can also look at DAoC as a prime example of this. To compete at all in RvR, you must have a buffbot. This is a second account that has the strongest buff class speced out fully on the buff line. They sat at a portal keep and just stood there to keep you with the concentration buffs (didn't expire). When the range maximum was added, people just moved their bots along with them to the area they wanted to fight in. If you didn't have a buffbot, you were at a major disadvantage in RvR. I am very glad to see the buff system go. Any and all buffs should be short duration and always on a timer.
As for the gameplay footage. Keep this in mind. WAR isn't even in Beta yet. They still have to implement the entire HE and DE races. Things can and do change through this whole process all the time. I am looking forward to a new "type" of MMO. WAR isn't following the same cookie cutter stance that most MMOs follow, including WoW.
First of all, I'm suprised why this post was started to how someone just wants to compare WoW and if WAR will change WoW or not. It doesnt matter for people who look forward to WAR because , Warhammer is based on its own right of their world and on their game release to finally come out from the old RTS and Table Top games. There's nothing wrong with that and as for whining over how much deph classes are, we all have no clue what so ever about each class of their skills will turn out to be. We havent even scratched the surface of going into the game to test it out yet. Seeing just a few pre alpha footages doesnt explain the entire system or how classes are going to work. Just like you mention about Bright wizards, they are named that way because thats what they are called in Warhammer IP and they cast fire spells only just like whats based on their background. You cant expect him to start casting ice spells and dark magic when He's a bright wizard. Even though he is a bright wizard , you just dont even have a clue of how much deph can be put into what fire magic he'd use. For all we know even though he is ranged dps mainly, we may see he could possibly even create a fire sword to use for combat which is done in Warhammer table top game so manipulation of fire is done is so many ways , it can make up for just saying fire is going to dull things because you only know that fire burns or something? fire can be a fire ball or set ablaze from the ground etc who cares but the point is you cant judge how shallow each class is or not. And what is wrong with the Warrior Priest ? he can heal and hit things with a great mace too ? doesnt that sound familiar hmmm a paladin perhaps but besides the point I'm not comparing this to WoW but just stating that we all dont know jack and dont care if it goes beyond WoW or not. I'm just looking forward to WAR for its own right of IT's game to release as an MMO. I'm sure many people are too so just end it here and either your waiting to play and not whining about just what we seen and havent seen or go on and bore yourself about it, to create doubts over a game that they are trying to get sorted over time.
Sadly, no game will ever reach the heights of WoW (except for WoW 2). WoW is a great game, it has all the elements that the majority of people require, easy to play, runs well on old systems, etc...
WAR will be a great game regardless of not being able to conquer WoW's sub numbers.
Anu: I have no doubt that WAR is built for PvP first and foremost atm, but you can't change the market, nor the players. I hope that Mythic will manage to make interesting PvE servers, cause all these PvE players, they will be looking quite soon, and AoC make them shiver and walk off...the result would be more PvE players than PvP players in WAR.
I hope Mythic won't screw the PvP game for the PvE players, but I am sure they can manage to make it interesting, from a PvE-centric point of view (non-raiding, raiding burnt the PvE market even more than the PvP market), even if it mean having few weird twists and rules on some servers, to make it PvE-friendly.
Warhammer RPGs fans...they are PvE players...WoW disgrunted players, most of those looking for WAR will be PvE players as well, since AoC is also coming at about the same moment, even if WAR and AoC get half the PvP players, WAR is almost alone claiming all the PvE players... No PvE player can seriously consider AoC, yet, Mythic makes a lot of PvE-friendly comments...and lot of non-raiding comments...these PvE players, they equate it to PvE + non-raiding = WOOT!
Me, I am willing to try PvP...but odds are...that I will not like it, no matter how they do it, especially by mixing chaos and orcs/de...so how exactly is the PvE going to play?

Haha, WoW has depth in their class system, haha sure :-).
Many people started their mmo career with WoW and measure all things to that game and then they think they know most things about depth, this makes me laugh.
If you want to play a mmo with depth to their class system and how you develop your character try out Ryzom or any of the other game with a similar system like that, but I think most of the players still sticking with WoW couldn't handle a game like that, due to their l33t skillz.

First off, let me say that i'm not a WoW fanboy... I was actually really looking forward to WAR but after reading the last preview from gamespy, I must say that i'm extremely disapointed in how this game is coming along. The bits which left me pretty disapointed were the classes and how they were going to work. From what I can gather, each race will have four classes, Melee dps, Ranged dps, Melee healer and Tank. I will use the empire as an example.. the Melee dps sounds actually really cool being a hunter but the ranged dps is a fire mage.. sure it's not bad but having just fire spells sounds a bit boring after a while. The tank I don't know much about but the melee healer sounds quite boring that you have to hit things to be able to heal. There also won't be any buff classes nor crowd control ones and I also find it strange that there isn't an archer class for the empire at least. Now correct me if i'm wrong but i'm sure Mythic planned on luring the PvP orientated players away from WoW and I know for a fact that's what EA wants so why are they leaving the classes so shallow? The firemages for example aren't going to even touch the depth that the mages have in WoW nor does it look like the Melee healers will attract the conventional priests/healers. The combat, variety and the sheer perfection of different classes WoW had is what I believe made it so popular (along with the way you level ofcourse) and if Mythic don't try and at least sort this area out, they won't ever steal players from WoW. How many of you WoW mages are excited to play the firemage in this? As a mage I sure as hell am not. Ofcourse this might be due to the warhammer license and trying to keep it as true to the warhammer universe but would you really sacrifice this for depth? On another note, the ingame combat videos i've seen so far look pretty boring. Ofcourse a lot of you will claim that the chars don't have many moves but would you really advertise a game with all the fun taken out of it? I sure as hell know EA wouldn't. I hope my concerns are shortlived and the game wipes the floor with WoW but as it stands, I can only see this game being a 7.0 one IE: has a lot of great features but doesn't go the extra distance to become an instant success.
First of all, why do we care if the game "touches" WoW? All you have to do that is make a generic peice of crap game and get 4 l33t kiddies worth of subs? Why on earth would you want that to happen to a game.
Personaly, I'm a bit sceptical on the Fire Mage too but who knows how they plan to pull it off. I think it'll depend on how many tricks they can make just using Fire. Personaly, it'll be hard for them to compete with CoH in quality there.
Also, why would there be archers in the Empire Classes? Gunmen would make a lot more sense. And even then they'de seem like Engineer rip offs. As far as I know the classic classes are Warrior, Rogue, Wizard and Preist, no archer. That's probably what Mythic is basing it around.
As far as the Healer, I'm not following you. Having to build up energy to heal is going to be MORE BORING than sitting around healing!? The only game I ever played a healer in was CoH and I can tell you I wouldn't mind having to hit stuff based on my expereience there. I don't know if it'd be that much of inconvience in other games though.
There will be buff classes. The Runepreist especially but probably the Warrior Preist too. There's crowd control in the classes too, it's just not the main focus of anyone. The Engineer and the Squig hearder both have snares so far.
I think the classes just seem shallow to you because they're planning on making them versistile. Preists could specialise in combate OR healing. The ect. classes could specialise in squig summoning, combate OR crowd control.
And, no one needs to lure anyone from WoW. WoW's PvP is absolute crap. Real PvPers probably don't even consider it an option.
You could say that Fire-mages aren't going to touch the depth of WoW's because they can't use Ice or Ether but that's probably not true. I mean, back to CoH, Fire Blasters have much more depth than WoW's Wizard because they're foucsed on one thing. They have a lot of interesting tricks for just Fire. I more concerned that WAR will have to compete with CoH.
WAR DOESN'T WANT 'TRADITIONAL' HEALERS!!! It's awsome. Paul says for them to leave now. In Warhammer, everyone fights. If you don't want to fight, the game isn't for you.
Why are you only looking at Fire-Mages anyway? I mean, yeah, I don't like being told which race to play but each mage in WAR has it's own distinction. The Fire-Mage is going to have a lot of secondary effects. The Shaman is going to be very smash oriented. The Runepriest is going to be very buff oriented. The Magus is going to be very versistal. I could care less if this game has half, 3/4, or even a tenth as many subscribers as WoW. I have total faith this will be the best game on the market when it releases. Now, understand that's not saying a lot. Also, in all probability Mythic will destroy it just like they did DAoC in the end.
I feel so much for you WoW addicts, i bet it's a hard burden to carry around.
I really hope Warhammer Online won't have anything in common with WoW, and if that means subscribers too then be it, there are a lot more quality gamers out there than those that play Blizzards PVE grind-fest.

I must say WoW is one of the worst MMORPG's I have ever played. I'v tried playing it 3 times and I just can't get into that game. I don't see how any of you like the game... The game sucks horribly! So I would say WAR will be a lot better then WoW even if there arn't as many subscribers.
Lineage II has 14 million subscribers worldwide. That's a bit more than WoW.
discount the F2P accounts in asia and ya talking of around 1million players who pay a monthly sub, wow is the biggest subscription based MMO, even in asia its not F2P instead they go for a metered approch but you still to pay to play.

The Burning Crusade is pretty cool. Unfortunately, that's all it is. Sure, it added more content, changed a few mechanics, and included two more races. But after you get past the gloss, it's still just the same old game. That'll be enough for the people that still enjoyed WoW at the release of BC. However, those that were feeling bored with the game will soon find themselves bored again. That's usually how it is for all MMOs and their expansions. Expansions only add a few more months of gameplay anyway.
But that's a problem for Blizzard if they don't speed things up a little. See, BC was waaaayyyy to late coming out. 2 years? A first expansion needs to be out within 12 to 18 months of release. Following expansions should be 9 to 12 months after that. Any longer, and too many people will get bored again. People were getting bored with WoW a year ago, but held on because they enjoyed the game and we expecting BC anytime. Then they just kept pushing BC back a little everytime. Pretty shrewd of Blizzard, actually.
Still, the fans of WoW are not going to put up with such a wait for the next expansion. By March or April, you're going to hear the same old whining aboutplayers being bored with the game. And by Q4, when WAR comes out, many, many players will be hunting for something new. And PvPers will see WAR and come flocking to the game (so long as it's fun, stable, and un-buggy).
My guess is that WAR will hold 500,000 subscriptions, easy. And it has the potential for as many as 1 million. An MMO can thrive on a mere 250,000. So I predict a long happy future for WAR.

That's not exactly true. While there is a strong focus on PvP, there' plenty of PvE in. The game will be 2/3 PvE at the begining and 1/3 PvE at the end.
WAR's PvE already seems to be a huge improvement over WoW's. For example, instead of getting a "Kill 10 wolves" quest off a ranger, you'll get a "Kill 10 Vultures" quest off the Orc boss cause they're eating his trophies! In my opinion that's a big improvement. Then there's the Public Quests which have all been PvE so far and seem just awsome. If you haven't already, check out the reveiws for the game from the press release and the video blogs for this month. The Public Quest is completely RvR and there's also an interesting PvP quest there.
The game is supposed to be entirely PvE friendly. You will never have to PvP if you don't want to but you will still contribute to RvR.
The only quest I can remember hearing about for Chaos so far is "Kill a bunch of citizens, load them up into a cannon and fire them at a bright wizard."
The WAR site has had 3 podcasts put up on their site. In the newest one they explained how the PvP and PvE area system would work. There is certain areas of the map that are for PvP and certain areas of the map that are PvE. If you wanna PvP, you just enter the designated PvP area and you can be attacked by the opposite realm. If you don't enter the PvP area then you wont be able to be attacked, because the enemy players wont be able to cross that line and into the PvE designated areas. Also you can make it to your capitol city by moving through the PvE zones.
You can go through the game completely PvE, PvP, or a little bit of both. So you wont need to have different server types (except maybe an RP server), since the areas are already set up to be different. WAR will be friendly to both types of people.
You really can't talk crap about WAR yet all you hear is review's you can't judge a game till you play it, I loved WoW in beta it came out and sucked ass.
If you think Mage's in WoW are so fun to play go play it remember frost nova and blink is iwin for you!
Playing: Everthing Played: DAoC,AC2,EvE,SWG,WAR,MXO,CoX,EQ2,L2,LOTRO,SB,UO,WoW. I have played every MMO that has ever come out.
I agree that they are definitely working to flesh out the PvE portion of the game. But I think it will be the Realm v. Realm gameplay that will attract the most new players. With individual scirmishes between random players, battlefields for persistant factional PvP, and even small instanced battles, this will be a PvPer's dream. Only FFA fans are being ignored here, and I couldn't care less about FFA.

You have 2467 hours total in Warcraft according to your X-fire sig.
2467 hours=102.79 days of 24-hour-per-day play
2467 hours=308.37 days of 8-hour-per-day play
2467 hours=61.67 forty-hour workweeks (1 year and about 2 months)--same as a full-time job you've held for over a year

Seriously.

You can go through the game completely PvE, PvP, or a little bit of both. So you wont need to have different server types (except maybe an RP server), since the areas are already set up to be different. WAR will be friendly to both types of people.
