Typically the Police's telephone number is out of service. I can't even get a crime number this time.

I bet they are all sitting around with their feet up. Wandering round and round in the canteen wondering what to do with themselves today.

I think that countries such as Singapore have gotten it right: Severe penalties for minor offenses really put a dent in crime and in turn save millions of dollars for hard-working citizens.

completely agreed. harsh laws keep citizens in their place. aslong as the government is not corrupt and abuses these powers, there should be no problem.

I've been on the other side of the fence and harsh laws just make people either more desperate, either more brutal or they'll just get smarter.

What you should do is elliminate the incentives for crime.

Ordinary burglar alarms are useless in this type of situation. If its always the same area that gets attacked go for a more local alarm, a simple (but hidden, preferably well away from the location) on/off switch, a few motion detectors (PIRS, can get the at DIY stores for a few pounds each). You link these, not to your standard burglar alarm, but to one insanely loud alarm located within the area. A constant very loud noise makes doing anything impossible, and it will alert most of your county (the police may even wake up long enough to investigate the noise). As long as its not harmful you should be safe.

I really hope you don't suffer anything like this again.

They didn't give a damn about the alarm. This is the fourth time they have robbed me.

The first time I fitted one, instead of smashing down the front door, where the alarm was, they smashed their way through the side wall. bypassing the Alarm completely.

So I reinforced it all with steel bars.

After that they changed their tactics from stealthy night time buglaries to broad daylight ram raids.

They drive in at max speed (murdering my lawns and flower beds) smash the door down grab the mower chuck it in the back. 45 seconds later they are gone.

The alarm is ringing, but there isn't any time to respond.

Foolishly I forgot to say to the police that they were carrying guns. I think I am supposed to say that if I want them to come. (Or even ring me back with a crime number). Unfortunately the 999 emergency man isn't very helpful and no one else is on the telephone anymore. Police are shit. Never help anyone. Don't even make an attempt to.

Sounds to me like you need to move to one of the gated communities Baff. I know 3 people who lived in the UK and 2 of them had to move to Gated communities to get away from crime. One poor couple had there prize winning dogs head torn off and put on a spike in the front yard
  • baffbaff Member Posts: 9,457

I do of course have gates, but they've smashed them down before too.

I have friends in London who live in gated communities.

But I live here, not the inner city.

And I'm not a very nice person either. If there are dogs, heads to be cut off, I'm your boy. If someone has to move, rest assured, it won't be me.

Well 11pm, the police have just left.

Response time of 6 hours from a 999 call, that's not too shabby. Nice blokes. Shame they aren't going to do anything about it. Still they've had their coffee's and I've got my crime number. I'll speak to them again in six months after I lose the next mower.

Use a Plasma Cannon instead :P Are we talking the Ion Cannon? We can borrow one from Kain.

Seriosuly, Riki has got a point, laser alarm systems work very well. Yup, becuase you will never know they are there. Usually burglers are people you know if your in such a country like area.

Well, I don't know. The dog sounds like a good idea, but if these guys are too determined, you're just going to end up with a dead dog.

I can't think of anything short of a couple of Anti-Tank mines or Claymores that'll stop them (I can't think of any place where you could get those legally). Even then, you'd get your ass sued up and down for years, because of all manor or retarded laws that say that burglers have rights too and such. Perhaps you could install a camera? With video evidence, the police might actually attempt to do something about it.

I'm going with all the cheapest options first.  Next is to buy an old rust bucket. They have consistently not stolen the older rustier lawnmowers right next to the shiny new one.

Really frustrating, I can't cut my lawns. I'm averaging about 3 cuts per lawnmower.

You really have to invest in hidden anti tank guns around your place, they're really good against gypsy vans, and it would take only a couple to cover the approach to the house from the road.

That, or plant mines around the door to your shed, leave the door open, and let nature take it's course......if they don't live, they can't sue.

Unless the garage is too isolated, could keeping it better lit be helpful?  A camera sounds like a good idea, too.  If you have the pics, I should think the cops HAVE to take it more seriously.  If the thieves are from the village they'd probably be recognised.  Sheesh... someone needs to do something to help.  I guess neighbourhood watches aren't easy to manage in farming areas, either.  You sure don't want to end up having to mow that big lawn of yours with nail clippers.
  • KurushKurush Member Posts: 1,303
They're going to steal any new mower, it sounds like.  If they jack the cheap one after you buy it, I think you're screwed.  Honestly, from what it sounds like, they might not even be stealing it for money.  Sometimes it's just kids doing it for kicks.

Alarms are useless, and they know it.  Alarms rely on sudden exposure as a deterrent, and you live in the middle of nowhere.  Your alarm could raise the biggest fuss in the world, but they'll be long gone before anybody decides to give a damn.  Your local PD lack the manpower to go after lawnmower thieves, it sounds like.

The only stuff that could keep these guys away is all banned in your country, so good luck to you.

Beautiful property Baff.... I can see why it would be so attractive to criminals. Greed and jealousy are perhaps our worst traits as humans.

Have you considered how they know when you get a new mower? I mean, if they've hit you up 4 times already, they must know when you've gotten yourself a new one. Perhaps they live nearby or even work at the place you're buying your mower from?

Its a shame the UK's crime laws seem to favor criminals with all the drug problems and the fact you have alot of people shoulda made sense to your lawmakers to make tougher laws and let people protect their self and property. If it was me I would personaly shoot first and ask questions later if they were illegaly on my property and hopefully fight any charges and send a message to the crooks but I dont live in UK and you have differant laws. Guard dogs kick ass and a good samaurai sword can do some damage as well as scare the shit out of junkie thieves and also a good idea is to leave a few bottles of booze (plastic) for them to steal and inject some pure laxative in there or whatever crazy stuff u can find let em steal it and hopefully that learns em.

Hey Baff! You'll love this! One of my friends took a paint system and waited for some theives to bash into his place. Sec they were near his tools he blasted then with a stream of neon green paint. The nasty kind you cant just take off with soap. Not only did the cops catch the crook but they also found about $56,000 in tools the bugger hadnt sold yet that he stole. Sounds to me like its time to paint yer enemy green! I guess the trail of green shoemarks the dolt left behind sorta made it easier to track the theif

Got some organic lawnmowers, but they eat all the flowers, strip the bark of the cherry trees and worse run out onto the road and destroy expensive vehicles. (And shit everywhere).

Samurai Swords are to be banned at the end of the year. So if you want one, now is the time.

I'm not putting blame in society or in anything/anyone else. I just think a lot of (petty) crime is done because people have few other alternatives according to their pov.
