It should be set at the time of the Butlerian Jihad. Race choices would be Thinking Machines, Tlulaxa (ancestors of the Tleilaxu), Cymeks, and Humans (with the choice of League of Nobles, Ginaz Swordsmen, Suk Doctor, Mentat, and Fremen) and The Spacing Guild . The sorceresses of Rossak have a psychic attack that can kill anything with a brain, but kills their own brains as well so I don't see how they can be included, and even if they manage to save their own brain from destruction like Norma Cenva does I would think that the sorceresses are too powerful.
I'd love a mmorpg set in the Dune universe. I think it could be done well if the focus was on House vs House conflict rather than the development of individual characters. That conflict could be political and economic as well as military. I played a Dune CCC that did an excellent job of capturing the different forms of conflict in Herbert's novels. Every time I played it I couldn't help but think "this would make a great mmorpg".
Dune MMO eh? Sounds like a solid story setting - you've got all the warring factions (solid PvP right there) fighting over imperial throne (PvP accomplishment, whoever holds the imperial throne gets to use imperial weapons/vehicles/buildings and such). Each house has its own weapons and vehicles - a good solid for MMORPG or MMOFPS
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
IMHO this is one MMO that would demand a semi sand box virtual MMO world. It would also need to be skill based instead of level based. The Dune universe is huge. Making it like WoW or EQ1 would just suck IMHO. I seriously would only want a Dune based MMO that could capture the vastness and diverse nature of the universe painted by Frank Herbert without locking players into a static and limited world.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
Hey there folks, just registered for the sake of this thread, heh. I figure that a Dune MMO should use the major houses out of the books as starting points for the first couple hundred players that log in, however once people have settled into the game after a couple of months, there should be the ability to form your own house...Now bear with me you nay-sayers. First off, it would not be like forming a guild in DAOC or in MXO, where like 8 people are necessary, it should require a flexible # of people based on the server population. For instance, say 3,000 people are registered on a single server, well then like 250 people should be necessary to form a new house, and like i said, population caps (both maximum and minimum) should be required in order to prevent one house from becoming the only legitimate power on a server. Now as for Fremen and Sardukaur, I think that the house that controls the Emperor's chair (not necessarily the Corrinos) should be able to start a QUEST to become sardukaur, likewise whoever has the fief on Arrakis. These quests should be, obviously, almost flippin' impossible. It should require at least a couple dozen HIGH ranking soldiers/medics, if not a damn nuke, to complete it. It should take a damn long time (like the way the original Jedi/Sith path was on SWG), and in the end only ONE person out of those dozens of people who started the quest should become either Fremen/Sardukar. Even then, they should need to spend massive amounts of time either in a sietch or on Salusa Secundus, and the devs would need to make pvp so random and volatile that the controlling house would only have time enough to pump out one or two sardukar/Fremen recruits. Plus, if the house is de-throned or de-fiefed while the recruit is on either salusa or arrakis, that character should be required to stay in both those hell holes until their house can come back and reclaim it, basically liberating them from there. This is just a rough idea, and i'll smooth it over some after i get some feedback from you guys

I have to say 2 things, use paragraphs plz. And second, the idea behind custom houses is a great one! Especialy if those custom houses arent static ones, meaning a leader of that faction can perhaps become a governor of a planet and potentially an emperor. This house would be able to control a territory, perhaps public buildings and of course would set up access for friends, neutrals and block enemies. Player houses would set up taxes (money and exp tax) but have benefits like merchants (stationary and wondering), guards in key areas that would defend allies/neutrals and attack enemies, transportation, trainers, quest givers, etc.

I'd LOVE to see a Dune MMO, but Dune has been treated so badly by movies that I'd be hesitant. It would take an AWFULLY long time to do a proper Dune MMO. Yes, it has all the elements, but could be so badly messed up that it might not be worth a start. Depends on who's developing it, I guess, and their "feel" for the whole Dune compendium. There's a whole lot of mystical stuf to the core of the Dune books that has never been adequately expressed in any other medium.

Oh and as for the problem of Fremen spice addiction, we'd need to discuss whether this timeline begins where Brian Herbert picked up, (i think his books would make an EASIER MMO, not a better one, because his writing was rite dookie in comparison to Papa Herbert) or whether it starts with the original "Dune" (or even somewhere else?).
For instance, during books 1 and 2 the Fremen were not only Arrakis-bound, but desert bound. They were fractured tribes, to say the least. During this stage of the game, I'd make the Fremen playable, hell even encourage people; because it's goin' to be REAL boring until we hit the end of book 2/book 3.
Until then, the game should focus on house v. house conflicts; espionage, (hell even polictical coups on the emperor would be neat; even if it should be nearly impossible to accomplish.) Alliances should be formed (House leaders should be people? a group of people who speak through one character? = Feedback please). As for forming Houses, I think the major houses from the books should be playable, however, it should be a terminal relationship. For instance, you start out as one of the Houses Major, however you're eventually forced out for some reason (Feedback). Then, find or make your own House minor. Powerhouses (no pun intended) should eventually be able to attain the title of House Major (also needs to be ridiculously hard); and then and ONLY THEN should they be able to say, go to war with other House majors; form alliances with House majors (House missions should reflect status with other NPC house majors); hell even invade Caladan/Giedi Prime/Kaitain etc.
But, heavy sits the crown , and as your house grows in power and popularity it should begin to be not only the envy of your enemies, but of your less trustworthy allies and other neutral parties. (House Ix pwns)
I like it. One of the first PC games I ever had was Emperor: Battle for Dune. Needless to say the game is still on my computer even though I have gone through 3 computers since. I would like the game to be faction based, Atreides, Harkonnen, and Ordos. And you could grind rep for the freman please help me wow has a hold on my soul and it won't let go
first off you start off in some town in one of the major houses. you learn the basics of the game here. you also get basic training in combat and trade and all that stuff. then you pick what you want to be like a soldier or trader and so on. i was thinkin the professions should be Soldier, Trader, a sort of healing class, mercenary, and some sort of outlaw type like a thief. just some ideas. then later on you learn about the major houses and you could pick which one you want to belong to or be neutral. then when you get alot of experience in the game you get to go to the emperors house. from here you get the some of the best equipment and items in the game. you can also get permission to take over a planet not in imperial control and make your own house. then it could be an rts on how you create it. then you can decide if you want to ally with one of the major houses or become a major house yourself. and you fight other houses in house battles and if your good enough you can go to the spice planet and take some land there. and if your the best you could take control the whole planet and rule the universe. then some side missions could include bein a fremen and sadukar member. you do this by gaining their trust first. then you do some sort of trial missions and they give you some of their equipment. then you do more stuff for them then a real hard mission to gain their best equipment. like fremen could give you a stealth suit and one of those sound weapons. sadukar could give you some heavy armor and a laser pistol and knife like in the emperor battle for dune game. just some thoughts on what the game could be like.
Dont be afraid. you never know until you try. who knows maybe it would get rid of wow. i hope it does if it is ever made cause wow really isnt all that great. yes it does have some good gameplay in it but it is way too cartoony for me. it feels like im playin looney toons adventures at times. and the pvp isnt all that great. has some good ideas but the controls arnt really made for pvp like guildwars. people jumpin around like rabbits and stuff really looks stupid. hopefully if they made a dune mmo they would fix all these problems and do better than wow. wow would be a really good game if it didnt look like a kiddies game at times. even the undead look like a halloween haunted house for kids.
I would love a Dune game, they would have to make it correctly though. That means it would have to be more than a PlanetSide clone. It should have a wide range of content whilst having the danger of the enemy lurking near.
Aight I'm honestly still waiting on some feedback regarding my previous posts, but I can add in a few more of my brainchildren.
Vehicles, both military and civilian, should be permitted. However, I think we'd need to deal with NPCs on a MASSIVE scale in comparison to former games. First off, max. server population will be like 1,500 if there's a lot of them? Well why not borrow from DAoC and cluster them or hell even pull a page from MXO and just merge all of 'em into a few "superservers". Besides the probable cult following that this game would originally attract, we're still dealing with military forces numbering in the millions per house. Now I don't suggest that the devs attempt anything near this scale, however I do think a large amount of NPC soldiers/vehicles would be necessary in order to bring the Dune we all know and love to life (visually at least).
Oh, and as for intra-house factions. Yeah, none of those. Intra-house factions tend to cause all sorts of political turmoil within the house and overall would ruin the experience. You have a problem with your house? Leave. You and a whole lot of other people have a problem with your house? Leave, make a new one. Although specialization areas within a house (i.e. Military service, Scientific Research, Merchantry, Medical Service) should each receive some sort of specialized communication medium, as well as beneficial areas for each type of service to the house, depending on rank. High ranking military commanders may see the Duke/Baron/Emperor/Doge etc. and collectively plan for war strategies, while privates within an army get a bunk and access to the mess hall (yes I think food/water should be important, the Fremen sure do). Obviously the more prestigious your house, the better your facilities. (Docs get hospital duty, hell even open up a private practice, Merchants can buy marketplace shops, researches can purchase or be granted research facilites, [Devs better invent progressive technology trees...never-ending])
Let's see....oh inter-house wars. I think formal declarations of Kanly should be necessary and PLAYER representatives in the House Council should be required. And when/if we get to the time of Paul's Jihad, every house major should at least try to resist. It'd be easy to just join his crusade and conquer the galaxy. Let's say for the sake of playability, he's a no prisoners kind of guy. However this will allow for some interesting revelations regarding House relationships. Old grudges...strong alliances, will they unite the Houses or fracture them? The devs should be prepared for both scenarios...
There's the Dune LPmud, it's fun romp once in a while, so why not for the MMO? I think you'd have loads of content with being able to do political intrigue, group v group combat (army units and etc), and lots of cultural differences to make RP significant (Just because X house and Y house are in the Landstraad doesn't mean they're of the same 'cloth.') and possibly important to player progression.
Even so that I am a big fan of Frank Herbert famous book "Dune" with more I would really dislike to see a MMORPG based on that universe. Movie lienced mmorpg was neither a great financial success. Take a look on The Matrix Online, Star Wars Galaxies etc.
I don't consider Lord of the Rings Online to be a movie lienced mmorpg due the book was public first and then later the roleplay game. For Star Wars it was George Lucas movie there got the hint to most people, but it only hardcore fans there like the "expanded unvierse" matriale and stuff.
I dont think that Star Trek Online or Stargate World would be be success either.
No! I love Dune but it can't withstand translations to other media as far as I'm concerned. Secondly, its the whole "Jedi" problem all over again. Think of a freaking Jedi, he's like some kind of psychic paladin with a laser sword. A lot of them are mechanics and fighter pilots too. You can't balance a Jedi with regard to anyone else while being canonical and conversely anyone is naturally going to want to play a Jedi. Similarly, Dune is practically all about Fremen and Sardaukar. Anyone else is hopelessly outclassed against them except for a couple of Duke Leto's elite soldiers. And Bene Gesserit? Yeah. Who wants to be the levies the Sardaukar can beat 10 for 1? So either everyone has to be Sardaukar and Fremen or they have to be nerfed. I don't think it'd work or be very enjoyable.
Thats why you make it a political MMO. Not a player based MMO. The books are completely politically based anyway so...

SWG not a success for an MMO? What the hell are you talking about? It still has how many servers today? Even after all the combat changes and complaints?
Mxo? Yep. But that was a small time developer who didn't know what they were doing.
STO and Stargate will do well if developed right. Every game is the same.
As for the idea? I do love it. It does have all the things needed for a successful mmo.
Herbert would have loved the idea, in my opinion. If he didn't want his Dune series to succeed, he wouldn't have written more books and let the original movie be made.
