Wow, this is when I actually wish I can go back in time, write somthin on a tablet and put it in a nice place to be found in the future. 12/21/2012 is just the date the Mayan calender ends. A very fascinating fact and incredible feat that they were able to decipher and refine through simple observations an astronomical alignment that took centuries upon centuries to calculate.
The date does not necessarily mean the end, but possibly a new beginning, as the calender itself rolls over and begins anew.
You can make out of it what you want, via any other belief you may have religious or otherwise. I hope it's a wake up call for humanity, we need it.

While the the World didn't go up in a ball of fire or anarchy took over (at least not too much) I think one "world" ends as another begins. If a person from ancient Rome were to come to this century, the world he/she knew did end long ago just as in time the world we know will also come to an end. I think the term "end of the world" leaves alot open for interpretation. Now if your talking about the destruction of life on a planetary scale, that is a differnt matter. I'm guessing that if this does happen on or around 2012, that the Maya (or anyone else other than ourselves) will have very little to do with it.
The truth is, just live life in its present form, don't obsess about the future or the past. If you dwell in the world of what ifs, you will never live life. Let time take its course, we shall know soon enough what December 21, 2012 will bring us.
Will communism take over the world with China at the peak? Maybe...
Will Islam conquer all of us infidels? Maybe...
Will a meteor hit us? Maybe...

That's probably because everybody stops reading at 666, that number has been tossed around with such absurdity no one is going to pay attention after you use it. You can plug in just about any number and find a pattern with it, that in fact is the whole idea behind the Mayan calendar. Cycles repeat over and over, We have good days, we have bad days, we indulge in life and have good days, we try killing everyone else for their stuff they're indulging in and have bad days. Call it PMS for the human race if you like, Either way it's a cycle that repeats.

It tossed around 666 a bunch, and said that things happen on a day 666 days after the start of WWI, which is a date pulled out of their asses, and then they go on to say that it goes in a cycle of 666 days, and bad stuff always happens on those days. Which is funny, because they list a whole bunch of days, and then they talk about stuff that happened that year, not even stuff that happened in the same month, and try to correlate it. Its not even close to believable.

Then after the movie comes out you get nut jobs shaving their kid's heads proclaiming every mole as a mark of the beast with the extreme wack jobs going as far as killing their kids over it. Now we have every idiot out there using it in their online name or password, there's probably more 666's out there than anime and game rip off names. Every wannabe "oooo I'm a scary person" tosses it around like it actually has some meaning. If you've ever actually read any part of Revelations it's full of metaphors and imagery. Unless you actually expect some critter with 9 freaking heads to pop up out of the water and destroy the world like some acid flashback on a Godzilla movie then there's going to be very little to do with 6's carved in it's head.

Don't forget that when the Bible was written man looked at the stars and said "that is heaven" we still, on occasion, refer to the sky as the Heavens. Lucifer Morningstar, also know as the Light Bringer is what we now call Venus, "morning, star" "light bringer", get it? As far as The Satan goes that was a job title in heaven. The Satan's job (and who he is is never named directly hence people associate him as being Lucifer) was to basically be God's "No Man" instead of being the "Yes Man" like every angel in Heaven he was there to say "mmm no God I think that's a bad idea because..." The Satan got vilified because he opposed man, an impure mortal being, being placed above the angels, pure immortal beings. God did this because man could choose of his own free will and Angels could not choose, they were made with only one purpose, to worship and do as God told them. God reasoned that if someone was not forced to but instead chose to do good of their own free will that made them better than someone who could only do good without conscious choice. Somehow this has all been warped over the years by religious zealots who believe we should all fear our creator and zealots who go the opposite extreme to oppose the first group, both are a bunch of flaming idiots.
Anyway, back to the matter at hand, look for cycles on your own, without outside influence (such as religion). If you do feel you need some outside fiction to aide you in looking I'd suggest Isaac Asimov's Foundation series (yes the same guy who wrote I Robot) all predicated on cycles of mass psychology. People, just like Nature, go through cycles. Not surprizing since we are a part of nature too and have our own internal clocks. Society also follows these rises and falls, as will our own someday, it's all a part of nature.
