for spotting lies... it's also good to know whats possible in 2007 and what isn't not even the greatest scientist in the world has managed to make anything like A.I. right now all they found out is that its much much much harder than they ever imagined. for other great ideas, quest, gameplay ideas, just think of the work that would be necessary to implent that.
the closer you get to real-life-ideas the more time those ideas require, but not just a bit more, at some point its just gets impossible for 2007 and the near or probably far future.
Wait for A.I. computers that make an A.I.-super-MMORPG for you, only they'll be able to do it, but if they have a good A.I. why would they wanna work for you there won't be anything THAT groundbreaking so soon, right now a very good MMORPG would be possible, no question, and for that they don't even need A.I. or other fancy unrealistic stuff.
What I am always just left wondering is why so many basic mistakes are being made in the new mmorpgs over and over again.
its like someone playing for example EQ1 for years, knows exactly what all the people liked about that and other games, then works on a new mmorpg and his first great idea is a rat-kill-quest
Whenever a developer says something in a vague sort of way that leaves it open to individual interpretation, don't trust him.
Whenever a developer tries to imply things by musing on hypotheticals, don't trust him.
Whenever a developer replies to a question with another question, don't trust him.
Whenever a developer replies to a simple yes or no question with a 200, 400, 1000+ word post, don't trust him.
Basically never trust them. There is too much money at stake for them to be honest. Try to pin them down to absolute statements of fact but be warned that they are extremely slippery devils. Almost worse than politicians.
It's somewhat perverse but true that the best way to find out what you want to know about a game is this: Get a dev talking. Ask questions. Take note of the things the dev is IMPLYING....BUT WON'T STATE AS HARD FACTS.
Whatever they try to imply, to lead you to believe without actually stating it as a fact, you can pretty much bet that the reality will be the exact opposite of the conclusion they are trying to coax you into forming for yourself.
At the same time I bought vanguard, I also bought some pills that would make my hair grow back, a chocolate bar that would make me slimmer, and two handles on a plastic tube that woud give me rock hard abs and tons of girls drooling over me. Then I bought a flask of with a liquid that, if I sprayed it all over my upper body, I would be promoted at work, and promised bodilly pleasures from all my female coworkers.
Amount of honesty is the same in all fields of commerse. It is up to you to buy into lies, or stay clearheaded and able to find the grains of truth in a pile of manure. I have so far never paid for subpar products or services. I might have missed some that really worked, I can live with that... but if you buy marketing lies, noone is to blame but you.
Play Star Wars Galaxies if you want all the features promised in all the games.
Do not knock it until you try it!
Is this sarcastic or serious? I've never cared for SWG, and I've never even read anything about it.
All I've ever heard was horrible things about it.
Totally serious! It is only 20.00 bucks, and I bought it because I have the Station Pass. It is my favorite MMO. I am logging in right now after I finish this hardball clip to level my medic. If you want to play as a new guy, message me here and we can play together. I am on the starsider server. I cannot decide: a pint of guiness or a glass of pinot grigio to go with SWG....
Seriously, I am having a total blast (no pun intended) in the game. I might buy the game for some friends of mine.
edit: decided on guiness. Later!
There are quite a few things that didnt make it in the game and there is a lot missing since the NGE came...
but i won't wake you up from your pleasant dream, sleep thight...
*Sigh* ok now we're going to play the pretty graphics vs AI card game now..
Nah..we want them both and there's absolutely no reason we should have to choose between the two. Besides the advanced AI option isn't available anyway.
Well, you can experience WAR yourself on the various Conventions. You could since it was in Alpha stage (and honestly, looked HORRIBLE!).
Mythic is VERY honest and open when talking about WAR.
Latest example I know of: "WAR probably won't be on Mac on release, because we have no experience of programming for Mac systems". What company before basically said: "Nah, we'd have to learn that first, so we can't promise anything"
What company showed horrible looking, but true Alpha Footage? With Placeholder Cast Animations, Casting Effects, Casting Sounds, and Placeholder models? All games look and are horrible in Alpha, it's only a barebone game in that stage. But Mythic was the only company so far (I know of) which showed un-edited, real Alpha Video Footage.
Long story short:
I trust Mythic. I don't trust those other Companies, I'll have to see the games first-hand before I decide if I play them or not.
As long as the demand is higher than the supply the company is in total control. To change this we (the consumer) have to stop wanting what they are selling.
It's like picking up a girl. You have to give her some attention but pretend you are not interested. Make her work for it. Ask her a few questions then shift your attention somewhere else. Like Dungeon Keeper.
Ahhhhhh.....Dungeon Keeper (prostrates himself worshipfully to game). Why did that game idea ever get buried?
Look, don't believe the hype on all these new MMORPGs, use the method I use to pick the winner. Buy the game that has the hottest elf maiden with the biggest rack on the box art.
How can anyone that's had advertising shoved down their throat every second of their life, actually be SURPRISED that someone lied to them?
Let me explain how good advertising works.
1. Find a good product.
2. Exaggerate the product. Make it a 'super product'.
3. People buy the product, but aren't upset that it isn't a 'super product'.
Why? Because it's still a good product. People forget exactly what they were promised and have a hard time being upset with something that works. People are extremely gullible. Smart, selfish people exploit that fact to no end.
If you don't like it, then I suggest you don't base your purchases on the DEVELOPERS reviews. Instead, read the PLAYERS reviews.
Why not focus on what kind of game it is and how it plays? Graphics aren't that big of a deal. In a year today's graphics will seem dull. Good AI in an online game isn't happening. You'd need a building full of supercomputers to keep up with the demands of thousands of individual targets. You want a good AI? Go play a non-online FPS.
Instead how about rating a game on its mechanics, originality, or (hold on to your hats) how much fun you have playing it? Fun! Remember that? I don't like fantasy games so no matter how snazzy the graphics are or now intelligently the computer plays, I won't buy it. But give me a solid sci-fi game and I won't care about the 5 year old graphics.
If you bought a game because of screen shots or a short video clip, then you need to revise your criteria for "Things worth spending my hard earned money on". It's that simple.

Games that have repetitive, boring, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive combat animations and boring, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, combat, are incredibly.......not fun and repetitive, repetitive, repetitive.
If the game had movie-like stunning visuals that made you feel like your combat is a movie, then that would be fun. Being lied to that a game would be fun, when it's downright horrible, is not fun at all.
Wasn't Dark and Light one of those games where the devs lied about everything, providing absolutely nothing during its release? I guess every single person who had their hopes up for Dark and Light must've been some kind of fool.
Everyone who followed Vanguard must be a fool too. And everyone who followed fable....
You're right, someone actually believing a game might be.....good? We must be self-dilluted morons if we think that's a possibility. We should be like all you holier-than-thou types and be pessimistic gremlins without any hope, basking ourselves in the reality that every single video game ever made is going to suck.
In fact, our new standard of expectation is that the game isn't going to be any better than PONG. In fact, let's be SO mistrusting and jaded that we never play video games again, that way when a good one comes out, we miss it entirely because we didn't believe it was possible.
Maybe next time instead of blindly watching one video and trusting that as what I want the game to be, I should follow the game, read about it in game magazines, previews, research, and tons of articles.
OH WAIT, I did do that. Who is the genius who assumed that the link I provided (youtube video) was the ONLY piece of research I had on the game before playing it? The genius who assumed that I had no idea about this game other than fancy screenshots and videos? Why would anyone assume such a foolish thing?
ASSUME. When you do that, you make a brainless mind out of you and........you........
You're right, every company DOES exaggerate their product. Unfortunately, games are no different. Get used to it.
No. As much as I hate Blizzard for turning themselves to raiding-trash, they don't willingly lies (although have a raid-enforcement make the game unfriendly to casuals, soloers and groupers and they will subsequently lies...without understanding they lie)
There are 2 differents lies, the willing lies, those who do it willingly. And those you do unconciously. I can forgive someone who lies without realizing it. I will trash talk them, but that will be it. Peoples who willingly lies, they are brad...

Age of Conan is going to be out for the 360. MICROSOFT. ..
Is this true? Have I been subconsciously blocking this information? So it's going to be playable with 4 buttons and horrid aiming controls? *kills self*

Yes, it's for PC and XBOX360. They're doing that with all kinds of games. TWO WORLDS, Shadowrun (FPS), etc.
They're even (most likely) going to have servers that are both PC & XBOX360 servers. Where the mouse and keyboard play alongside the controller.

I hate to say this is. But how much money does Blizzard make? Can other dev teams please learn a thing or two from them.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!!!
Please follow the simple Blizzard rules for success.
1.No lame ass console games.
2.Look good on systems 5 years old.
3.Playable on mac
4.(an older rule) Reward the player
5.NEVER EVER MAKE A GAME PLAYABLE ON A CONSOLE F**KING EVER
sorry to break it to ya...but this is life. We dont always get what we want right away...we have to be patient....and if you are going to whine and complain, then we dont want you in the games anyway....contaminating with immaturity and impatience.

I'm sure that was for the OP. But this is my replay to that statement.
Its call 30 shots of espresso, MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY IT SOME DAY.
I also like to pretend I'm Matt Foley whenever I MAKE A DAMN FORUM POST.
I think I remember saying that before Vanguard was released. They were making alot of promises, but not discussing how they did it. So all I could assume was they were trying to generate hype and telling players what they want to hear.
Anyways Advanced AI is overrated. Granado Espada has a pretty advanced AI. Whats annoying about it is that monsters aren't always dumb enough to just charge a person. Sometimes they gather up a mob and attack all at once. Also they use skills in sucsession causing a severe blow you cannot get up from.
I dont think its just MMORPG companies, the video game industry does this all the time. Also, its not just the companies. Players jump on the bandwagon and increase credibility to some of these claims. Or maybe expectations are just too high.
I try not to believe anything until I've played it.
Play the game, judge what it has, and what it doesn't.
It is a dissapointment when you wait ~a year for a game, beign promised its the most awesome thing since toast bread, then have it pretty much be like every other thing on the market, or like your good ol' Wonder bread (wheat - cuz we have to stay healthy). But there's no avoiding things like that. Maybe, just maybe, within our life time, we'll encounter an honestly revolutionary game (but things like that come every once in a blue moon). I try to take every 'supposed' aspect of a game with a huge salt block (like the cows), it helps with the disappointment. Until then, we'll just deal with the same old LIES!!!!!
All I know is, as a long time MMO vet, if you want all the awesome features like player housing, player run cities (mayors), play run economy with like factors and stores, and awesome characters, huge world, fun combat, interesting quests, bars/clubs that really feel like bars and clubs, and many, many more ... try :

Impatient? How am I impatient when I've had enough of lies lies and lies?
If I was impatient, I would've been fed up the first time MMO's and online RPG's lied about everything. This is what.....the 100th time an MMO has done this? Let alone a PC game.

Certainly not me.
Disappointed? Yes.
Surprised? Absolutely not.
Fed up with lies? YES.
Apparently people can't understand this simple concept... so let me repeat it AGAIN.
Exageration and Outflat Lies are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.
I don't understand why that is so hard to understand. It's one thing to exagerate. It's entirely another to outflat lie through your teeth.
