Is that the video where he says anyone who mistakes marketing hype for truth is a complete moron?

I'm not going to watch some crappy YouTube video just because you can't present your complaints in a coherent manner.

The answer to eradication of disappointment : cynicism and unfaltering pessimism in all things, as the paradoxical optimistic view of pessimism is that no matter how hard you try, you will not be let down by anything, only pleasantly surprised or proven correct. Messes with your personality and outlook on life a bit, true, but call me an ***hat and you call me correct.

Hah, actually, that's EXACTLY how I live my life ATM ^_^ Yeah, once enough hopes are smashed, you stop to hope, to prevent further let-downs.

Sadly I'm proven correct almost evertime now, which makes life kinda...un-fun, but oh well, at least I saw it coming

Do not knock it until you try it!

OMG!!  lol, ok so let's examine this example of your's...You goto the store and buy SWG and you install it and you see all these cool features the game has to offer.  The game is fully installed now and it's time to connect to a server, but before that happens you have to wait 3 hours to download an entirely different game (which I might add is in it's 3rd incarnation).  Sooo, no big deal right?  Wrong, you bought a MMORPG, but instead you now ended up with an MMOFPS

Haha, sounds like a bunch of lies to me

Impatient = Listening to the marketing and pre-release hype (which always lies) and building your anticipation of the game based on that.

Patient = Waiting until the game actually releases and judging it based on what it actually sets before you.

Yeah, but if you drink enough of it the ladies start looking more attractive to you.  Just remember not to look directly at them when you wake up in the morning.

Is this true?  Have I been subconsciously blocking this information? So it's going to be playable with 4 buttons and horrid aiming controls?  *kills self*

Most amusing, so when did the 360 controller just have 4 buttons.

you obviously know nothing about console games and haven't played them since... well the SNES by the looks of things.

you poor thing. next time you talk trash about something, make sure you got your facts right.

4 buttons on the 360 controller.... good one *shakes head*

Penny Arcade did come up with a slight sarcastic twist to the amount of things it can do though:

We are over saturated by lies :P.  We feed our children lies non-stop to shield them from the horrible truth.  That truth being that life is relatively rough.  With so many people now its even harder.  Hence the only way, or the fastest way, to make it is to lie your way to the top.  We lie/hype in our resumes to get that job to make more money.  So in turn you got to see their point of view when they lie/hype their game to oblivion.  Their trying to make that big dollar and make it to the top :P.

Even though a lot of what the OP said is through it's always easy to get into an open beta before the game was released. I participated in VG's beta, it was a joke imo but I thought mabye if they spend a a month or two they can implement all the lovely features and sort the bugs out. They released the game one week later....lol.

Whenever I read about what the devs have said about the game they will be releasing I only take in the main points like the combat, classes etc. They usually  say the GAME might have this feature but when they say stuff like the game will contain "Super unique advanced ultra graphical physics designed by NASA" it's pretty hard to believe tbh.

Personally, I feel the video gaming press is also to blame for overhyping the latest games. The big outlets like G4, IGN, and PC Gamer know that doing fair and accurate reviews is no longer enough to stay in business. Now they make their money on getting the "exclusive" on the next revolutionary, mindblowing "WOW killer" game, and in the process swallow the devs' BS hook, line, and sinker. I'm a GW fan and was very interested to read about GW 2 in PC Gamer, but really, how can you preview a game that's at least a year out from being released?

I also love how the big media outlets have their reviews of MMOGs posted within a week of launch, and then don't do a follow-up review for 6 months to a year later, if ever.

But to the OP's original post, I can't understand why he's so angry with Oblivion - maybe it wasn't earthshattering but it was still a great RPG that improved in many ways on previous Elder Scroll titles. As for getting sucked into Vanguard, well all I can recommend is wait at least 2-3 months before starting any new MMOG. That way you'll have had time to get word of mouth feedback, you'll have skipped any problems with the launch, and you might just get to open an account at a bargain thanks to 14-day free trials, etc.
