Asherons Call 2 is dead , Failed (was a good game i think)
Dungeon & Dragons Online is almost dead, Failed (Forced grouping could be the reason)
Many players complain that this game gets boring very fast, many Lifetime subscribers wish they could get their money back. It seems that many people think that the Technical aspects of the game are great but the "addictiv" part that makes a game so good, is missing. Others dont like the infinite Questing and bad XP for grinding.
how long will LotR survive with the current state of the game ?
Is LotR a Failure ???
Comments
Considering that they will have broken even in a month or two: NO.
If the game dies a year or less from now, it will still not be a failure, because it has already sold so many boxes.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
I wouldnt call it a failure either.
If they dropped their monthly price to £6.49-£6.99, i may go out and purchase the game. The current monthly subscription is too high for what the game actually is and has to offer.
As for DnD online, saw it for sale in the store's for £2.99 (with 1st month free), not sure on its monthly pricetag, but even that price i was told not to bother with the game by 3 online friends who used to play it. Simply grouping up and logging in and havign LFG/and shouts for PuG's for hrs on end without success, they said don't bother with it, its dying anyways. So never bothered. I did play it in beta, but after 3 days gave up on it myself) obviosly things havent changed much.
Only time will tell, if LotRO turns a profit after a year but closes it doors shortly thereafter, I would consider it a failure.
My reasoning is this, Credibility! they had a great game in Asheron's Call, AC 2 was pretty good, but I think if they had kept closer to the original game it would have pulled more AC1 players to it, and if AC had a full makeover I am sure I would go back to playing it. D&D online still has the potential to be good game, but I am not a fan of required/forced grouping. I think they have should have waited till they had more quests in their inventory.
But just like SOE has a bad reputation for a lot of reasons, some real some imagined. Reputation plays an important role in getting people to BUY your game. Yes a 14 day free trial may get people interested enough to buy it. But how many boxes will get sold to get that all important "went gold" label.
If I took the advice of my friends and these forums I would have never tried DDO. I tried the trial and was hooked. It has its good days and it has its bad days. Overall if you get into a good guild that fits your playstyle the game is very fun.
I enjoyed my time in AC very much as well as my time in AC2. To me they were not failures. I had a lot of fun and no regrets. I currently sub to DDO and LOTR and I'm having a lot of fun. Not considered a failure in my opinion. If it's sub numbers and all that junk that is their job not mine. I log in, group with friends/guild and enjoy my time.
If they offered an all games pass like SOE I'd sub to it so I could play AC again.

Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate.
Lord of the Rings Online is far from a failure. I understand where the thought comes from. I felt a similar way back in early closed beta. LoTRO is not your run of the mill EQ type of game though it bears a good deal of similarities. If you play it expecting a casual, solid entertaining game then you will be pleased. If you expect it to be a raiders treadmill timesink from hell ala wow etc then you will be very disappointed.
Once you shift your mindset though the game becomes far more enjoyable. Take your time, read the quests, immerse yourself in the lore and have fun. If all you want is to get to the "end game" come back in a couple years after more content additions have come in to flesh out the game world more. LoTRO makes for a great "second" game for the more "hardcore" (although I hate to use that term) and a very solid primary game for the more casual and laid back player.

LOTRO a failer? Haha! You're dreaming.LOTRO is a huge success sales-wise. There will be some churn as the 1st month ends, like all MMOs.
LoL, ask the Turbine bean-counters if this game is a failer
No LOTRO is not failure
But it surely shows MMO genre must change. I think any game after LOTRO trying to pull same worn out EQ/WOW formula will just fail miserably...
I agree with you Lord of the Rings Online is far from a failure, i think people come to LOTRO looking for something like WOW or EQ2, If you come to LOTRO looking for something like this you wont enjoy the game, becouse LOTRO is diferent of those game, but if you come and read all the quest you make, not thinking about to get the max level, only following the storyline, belive me you are going to enjoy this game a lot, becouse LOTRO is a great game.
How can anyone compare WoW and EQ? EQ is much more difficult and challenging, and it caters to a much more mature player base, since the leveling can be difficult.
I'm not a big fan of LOTRO, I play 1-2 hours a week because I find it a bit boring and bland. I would have much preferred a more sandbox Middle-earth Online. I also happen to think the quest-only XP is killing the social aspect of the game, with groups often breaking up after a quest or two because there's no reward for doing quest you don't need, just to help someone else out. That for me is the biggest fault of the game.
That said, it's far from being a failure. It's a huge success. Turbine will continue to release free content expansions and boxed sets for the other areas of middle-earth. I think they've done a great job of reaching their target audience and the game will continue to grow. It's just not my cup of tea.

To all those trumpeting that LOTRO is not a failure because they have shifted some boxes, you must bear in mind the target they, or indeed the industry, expected to reach.
If they had set themselves a target of achieving 8million accounts created in the first few months of launch, then one could say that they may have failed.
If they were striving to cover the cost of development, have a steady number of loyal fans and keep the servers open for a number of years then it looks possible they will succeed.
If the "industry" had expected LOTRO to deal a killer blow to WoW, you could consider LOTRO a failure.
Judging from the venom of the trolls and other games fan boys attacking the game here I would say it is a success.
Judging from the sales numbers I would say it is a success.
Judging from the reviews I would say it is a success.
Judging from the my guilds retention and recruitment I would say it is a success.
Judging from ingame populations in low, middle and high level areas I would say it is a success.
If it looks like a success and walks like a success there is a darn good chance it is a success.
I miss DAoC
I don't really class AC1 as a failure of Turbine. It was pretty much run by Microsoft for a long time, and that is what ruined it. But then when Turbine got it back from MS, they did nothing with it so it never got any further.
IMO AC1 was the only really good game Turbine every made. It seems odd to me that went from making what was probably the ultimate in open ended sandbox game (AC1) to the ultimate in hand holding linear play game (LOTRO).
short term...no..very good launch and quests, very polished
long term ... yes. no matter how many devs you got on, they arent going to release enough content to keep the playerbase around.
I don't play it but it seem to be doing pretty well so far. It will be around for awhile.

Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy!
Funny, but aside from the usual few trolls, I just don't see any of that "venom" you speak of.
90% of the posts I see are not "venomous" - they are like "I came, I played, I got bored, I left".
If you want venom, try the Vanguard forums or "I hate SOE" threads" in the SWG forums.
The OP is nothing more than a troll, with no basis in fact to back up his claim.
LOTRO is a success.

This topic can be debated until we are all dead and gone and there will never be a definative answer. I say this cause no matter how the sales turn out and how the player retention turns out or how long the game is active.
There will always be those who will say it is a failure cause the game was not the way they like it. And those who will always say it was a success cause they like the game.
I say the game isn't a failure, cause i am having fun playing the game. Isn't that the true goal of the devs to make a game that people have fun playing? To me that is the true measure of success. If people have fun playing the game they are playing then it is a success. Yet on some lvl it will always be considered a failure cause there will be those who aren't haveing fun.
Even wow suffers from this. It may be the most played game out there and have sold more copies than any other game. But i can garuntee you will find people who say the game suxs and is a failure cause they don't like it. You may not agree with them but that is the bueaty of having your owne opinion. It is yours and no one can take it away from you.
Well I wouldn't say its a "failure" but it really doesn't have much staying power. I have played since beta and took a couple months off but I am still incredibly bored...
Anyone have a sugestion on what else to try. I would like something with some PVP I don't want to get into something that the community/economy is already ruined in ala EQ.
I tried shadowbane a little and liked the cocept but the controls were brutal
I tried EVE online that was too much like work
I really miss EQ but as I said that one is ruined now
I did EQ 2 way to slow a pace there
I tried VAnguard.... enough said there
Ryzom... maybe I am still in the demo and contemplating a subscription
and I am currently downloading the DAoC demo is it any good?
Provide any link to a news item or dev interview where Turbine claimed its goal was to be a WoW killer and or obtain 8 million subscriptions in the first 6 months after launch.
The game is a success if it has recouped its development cost, can pay for its current maintenance and continued development, as well as bring in a profit on top of that.

I guess it depends on who you ask. Most of the people who I know who loves this game as Casual gamers like myself. I've been playing since early beta and never once got bored. I suppose this may have to do with the fact I only can play 2 hours a day at most. Then again just because of that I played wow for years before getting bored and I like LOTRO better so It mite take ages..
In the end if LOTRO can keep the casual gamers as it has, then its a total success

Comprehension is not your strong point. Not only did you fail to understand the context of my post, but you then go on to state something whilst completely ignoring the whole point of the collection of words presented to you in my post.
At NO POINT did I even suggest LOTRO has failed because it did not dethrone WoW.
AT NO POINT did I suggest that Turbine were looking for 8million subscribers in the first 6 months of launch
The game may well be classed as a success, by YOU, if it has covered costs and has people playing. In order to succeed you must have an objective.
LotRO expected 1 million players, which they haven't achieved. Is it a failure?
Can you provide a link to back either one of your statements up?
I miss DAoC
I seem to enjoy that game alot, so does the people that seem to be playing the game.
I started playing a month ago and I'm not bored. I chosed the option that it needs to grow, like many other MMOs. Even WoW didn't reach 1 Million after 2 months.
