Reality Check: 69.1 % of those that bothered to take this poll, don't think LOTRO is a failure. That is a significant majority.

LotR the 3rd Failure of Turbine ?
Yes it is. 30.9%
No it isnt. 53.1%
It needs time to grow. 16.0%
Based on 324 votes.
324 Votes is not majority vote. That's just people who come here. 80% of the rants you see in-game. On official forums. Or hear it from a friend/teammate.
Kyle,
Try reading my post again and think about it. You have the reasoning skills of a child.
I stated that it was a percentage of those that took part in the poll we were discussing. It was in that context that the term "majority " was used, meaning a majority of those that responded to the poll.
The bottom line is that the poll failed miserable at proving that a majority of MMORPG.com subscribers think of LOTRO as a failure.

ya that is the second time, your making me feel like you are trying to bait me into an altercation. Obviously I dont have a long fuse, so why are you trying to start something with me. You helped me once a couple of weeks ago on here on a thread, and that was cool, but now you just sound like a turbine fanboi who blindly blames the customer without even knowing wtf you are talking about. just because I have problems in the game doesnt mean you need to start jumping to conclusions. My punishment was harsh when compared to the crime. I said one time in the ooc channel 'whoever reported my name sucks' then this person tells me to shut up and grow some testicles, and just assumes that because my name got changed it must have been something obnoxious and it wasn't. So i said something back, and boom I am banned.
TRYING TO PROVOKE SOMEONE INTO AN ARGUMENT IS JUST AS IMMATURE AnD OBNOXIOUS , as resorting to cuss words and name calling. So.. How bout you just leave me alone and not quote me. I am entitled to throw my 2cp in when addressing the OP of the thread. I don't think that you trying to start something with me is considered a post that is contributing anything positive.
First of all calm down. Second most people around here chide each other a little bit here and there, all in good fun. Third just take your 3 day ban like a grown-up and learn from it.
I consider everyone at this site a friend.

Still whining about your ban Lumberg? Calling folks names (as an anal retentive old person I take offense). Mad that folks are baiting you?
Hey, controlling your emotions is your responsibility not ours, and on these forums, if you want to run with the big dogs, you'd better learn to communicate w/o resorting to insults and name-calling, and learn to manage your anger when replying to taunts.
Now, back to the OP's subject, since all posts should really be about the original topic. I don't think LotRO is a failure, but I woudn't call it an unqualified success. I'm not in the game atm, but I don't believe it is currently growing, (any new servers opening up?) and in fact I think the churn is pretty severe. Never a good sign to see players calling for server consolidation and difficulty finding groups.
Just a guess of course, but if upper level players aren't seeing many folks around it is quite possible that this is due less to people playing the game casually and more because they cancel and leave the game once they get to the higher levels. (as I and many others have)

I dont think this is as big of a concern overall as it may seem reading here. I guess it depends on the players perspective though. This was discussed yesterday a little bit in another thread. There are a lot of players in the mid-upper 20's right now that seem to be progressing at the same pace, I run into the same people almost every evening in the same areas I am in, and have been since I started 2 months ago.
If anything, there are too many people in that range. Last night it was extremely difficult to even get necessary kills in the Trestlebridge orc encampments because there were so many people there working on the same quests/deed.
I still have my milestone set to Thorins Hall and when I return there for skills/crafting the chat channels are at least as busy, if not busier with people looking for newbie advice.
I am sure that a lot of the higher level people are moving on, as is indicated all over this board. But from personal experiences there is a very healthy mid level population, at least on Meneldor. I have still yet to wait more than probably 15 minutes to form a full group for a quest/instance. Half of the nights when I log in just planning on doing some solo stuff I end up in a group because I see people in the LFF forming for something I need, I think only once have I started a group myself because it just has not been necessary.
Experiences obviously do differ though, just happy that mine has been good as I spent quite a while over the past year or so trying every MMO I could get my hands on to find one I was happy with playing semi-daily.
People just want to try and knock something that's doing well. Its part of human nature unfortunately. I love the game and intend to stay for a long time. I like to play casually and immerse myself in the quests, have an experience rather and go kill for 200 hrs a week grinding up. I read the books 5 times since jr high and enjoy entering the world and interacting with my kinship and other players.
Just look at the poll, its ranking here, the articles and reviews in different magazines and newspapers and you'll have your answer as to whether or not its a failure.
Haven't played the game so I can't say for sure if it will turn out successful or not, but I have played AC1, AC2, and DDO and the more I play Turbine games, the less I like them. DDO has a lot to offer in terms of character customization, but lacks in all the other things that should've made it a great MMO. Honestly this makes me rather skeptical of another love of mine in LoTR as DDO somewhat put a bitter taste in my mouth for D&D in general.
However, to say it's a failure after only a few months of release would be ludicrous. To say DDO is a failure after 2 years of botched servers, core rule changes, and developer turnover is another thing. Can't really put in my 2 cents until I play it. You also have to understand that Turbine may the company, but the development team and the CS team is what really makes a game triumph or suck. So just because they've bailed on their previous games doesn't mean that they will again with LoTRO.
I played Asherons Call and it was a fun game - needs a complete makeover now but for what it is, its fun. AC2... looked great but was missing something. I have a founders membership to LOTR Online and it is a great game and cannot see this game failing. But to each their own.
Oh and I also have an active WoW account and play it for fun. Everyone gets something out of a game otherwise they would not play it!

I wish they would upgrade the graphics of Asheron's Call to modern high res graphics... make them into AC2 quality graphics and i'll play it again.
Certainly not a failure, but definitely has it's drawbacks. What is it with Turbine and their inability to create a MMO with a very diverse class and race structure? This game is too narrowly focused and I find the current class structure too limiting and every class I've played feels wimpy and weak. I guess only the Fellowship of the Ring is allowed to feel like heroes. What a complete let down.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
Considering that the game is limited by the lore of the books and what they can and can't do under the license they have. It is not that they couldn't come up with a more dinamic races and class it is that the books are limited in the races allowed.

That is an excuse. If they were so limited, why did they even choose the Class system then? Why couldn't we just start as a Race, and then build up our skills into something much more flexible? Wait, I know why, because it was a better business decision to make a standard, sub-par MMORPG clone. As for Races, ifTurbine wasn' restricted by Tolkien Enterprises here, we could've been the Evil side with real PvP. We'll probably never know though if they were restricted here.
Also, if they were really that restricted to making a great game, why did they continue? Oh right, they wanted your money to ride on the LotR fanbase.
Was it really worth Turbine's reputation to cash in on two major franchises (DnD, LotR), that are considered flops? I guess we'll soon find out.

NO! It got.... Chicken race!
... Characters don't really get killed in PvE so why would there be an argument against being able to play "opposit faction" that player deaths doesn't fit so well. Why not use same nondeath situation as in PvE...
LOTR is a great game.....its not about getting max lvl in 1 month. Its the game exp. getting there. The story line is great and i find myself just exploring the world. Granted it is not easy like wow, and its not a headache like EQ was. It suits my play style, and will only get better once things are ironed out.
failure? not hardly.
The problem I have with it is that I read the book, saw the movie, and the story in LOTRO simply does not compare.
I agree; and I can't accept that hobbits are fighting through Eriador... It doesn't fit my thoughts about Middle-Earth. I played beta, but I never will subscribe.
But I'm sure LotRO isn't a failure yet; let's see what will happen after AoC/WarOnline release.

Hate to be the one to tell you this but yes they are restricted by Tolkien enterprise. They have said so on many dev chats. Also hate to break it to you but there are alot of people who like the game just the way it is. They like the fact that there is no world PvP and that monster play is a side game. All of what you stated is your opinion about why they did things the way they did.
They never said they were out to innovate and bring ground breaking changes to the mmo genre. All they set out to do was make a good story based PvE game about middle earth. And guess what? contrary to your believe and others they did that. How exactly is LOTRO considered a flop? The game was number one seller for the first two months at many game providers. They have alot of people playing the game. I know this for a fact cause i play it and there is never a shortness of players on.
As i stated in your opinion the game is a flop cause it wasn't the game you wanted it to be. You are entitled to your opinion as is everyone else. but to make up stuff without checking the facts first about what happened or find out how they are limited is irresposnible on your part.

The argument of against having playable evil races like the free races is this. The free races were fleshed out in the books, we know there habits, how they spend there days. we know the name of there towns and cities. The evil races are just faceless evil in the books. We know next to nothing about them other than they want to kill everything that is good in the books.
This is why turbine can't creat evil races. Cause the holders of the IP tolkien enterprise won't let them create new lore to make the evil races playable. They won't let them create evil cities and towns that weren't there. The towns and camps that turbine created for the game were mentionsed in passing in the books. Plus turbine is able to use the other books put out by christopher tolkien as reference to help flesh out these places. If the place they are looking to flessh out is mentioned in someway in the books.
Jefferey steele mentioned in his latest interview that tolkien enterprise has been very active in the developement of the game. check out the interviews and such before you make statements that have already been answered a million times.

Grindalyx, is spot on with his comments.
Those complaining, are complaining because its not the game they wanted (which usually means heavy PvP, raids or some revolutionary non-existent technology).
Those of us that played in closed and open BETA warned all the PvP'er, over and over and over again that it wasn't the game for them or hard-core 20+ hours a week raid centric power levelers.
LOTRO is not a failure by any stretch of the imagination, its just not a game for everyone.
If you want forced raids, world PvP and brightly colored avatars, you can play plenty of other games.
LOTRO has busy servers, a health and helpful community, and plenty of positive industry reviews.

You got that right ! The worst kind of T roll too trying to make out they have something intelligent to say. I think these type of pricks will only ever be happy when everyting has failed and the industry collapses. Get a freakin life !

The fact is that LOTRO is doing great. The sales numbers are huge, the lifetime subscriptions are triple what they expected, and the servers are populated.
Agree with Summitus' comments - some people just love to tear others down.

Actually, he's not a troll at all. And did have a basis in fact... maybe read the OP before you yourself start trolling? And he did have several intelligent things to say -- get your freeking reading glasses!
I had to vote yes, failure. For all the reasons the OP said. Had you asked me a month ago I would have said it was awesome. I got to level 45 questing with a buddy for the majority of things and getting a PUG when needed (rarely). The quest system got incredibly repetitive, granted it took about 40 levels for it to do so, but it did. Quest-only content also left everyone looking the same and having the same equipment. All that on top of a pretty dull class system made for little more than factory cut-outs of every class.
And even with all that, it could have been a wonderful game. But at lvl 40 I began thinking, "what is there to do?" There are no dungeons to play in more than once as everyone doing them are going for the first time, sucking and barley getting through then moving on. The raid content (i must say I didn't get to the end) is bland and tedious and the pvp is only entertaining for a little while.
I was enthralled when I started, but perhaps I need a bit of a grind in a game. Once a PC gets towards the end of a quest line they can't just go on and goof around without feeling like their doing nothing. At least in WoW I could pop on for a half hour and actually see progress in my exp bar and maybe get some neat loot on top of it. The only thing you get in LotR is a little headway in a fairly meaningless stat trait and a bigger repair bill.
Take it from me -- 45 and just cancelled my account -- if you're craving a game that continues to progress into the endgame look elsewhere. I'll be playing Overlord until the next round of mmos come out.

Well the game still needs to progress and updates are coming sooner than ppl think, 1 was implemented 1 month after going live and another due out soon so because the game is only a baby it wont be fully developed un till it ages some, And if you could just log in like WOW and gain some good EXP and loot then i suppose every 1 would be whining about being at cap and having nothing to do as they have done all the raids 10 times yada yada yada. I am a lvl 46 guard as my main toon and have not seen 1 other toon that looks anything like me ok so there are toons that look alike but are you saying that in WOW every toon has it's own look? heh hardly i had 2 characters to lvl cap in WOW and seen several same class types that were identical, it don't matter what game you play there will always be similarities in all aspects of that game be it looks in game or actual game play itself.
There is plenty to do in LOTRO it is just people are to busy focusing on leveling in games these days that they tend not to explore the world they are playing in try spreading you wings a little and do some adventuring i'm sure you will come across something you never thought to be there in the fist place.
For example i was just out wondering the fields the other day (near bree) and come across and orc camp that not me nor any of my kinsmen had come across (several lvl capped players and quite a big kin) and ok it was well below our lvl but the loot we got from there was better than most our same lvl gear that we were using got me a sweet chest piece that set's me apart from every other guard i have seen so a little exploring can bring some good treasure but only if you take the time to find it instead of just following the crowd.
The game is far from a failure . It has had great sales, the populations are still heavy and it is very smooth and polished. All the more credible professional reviewers have been giving it high marks, which will only help boost sales even more.
<Snip irrelevant crap> Quest-only content also left everyone looking the same and having the same equipment. <snip> And even with all that, it could have been a wonderful game. Everybody at level x looks the same IS a legitimate gripe. I would think that is even more true of WoW, however.
"What is there to do?" Explore! Help other through the tougher quests! Craft! TV has made you a bunch of ADD [not AD&D] "I'm bored" whiners. I've seen farmers growing barley, but no one sucking it???
Now you say you WANT grind? Your attention span couldn't handle it!
"Pop in for a half hour and actually see progress" Uh, yeah, you can do that...in fact, if you don't play a character for a while, you get a blue bar that gives you double xp from killing MOBs.
"..continues to progress into the endgame" You apparently aren't familiar with Turbine's reputation from AC and even DDO. Turbine is the gold standard for releasing episodic content!
Endgame? Why do you think the game will end? I think that I have heard of an MMO that had a plan to run for 5 years, then end, but I can't recall that game - probably indicating that it wasn't very successful.

Currently Playing:- nothing
Yes, LotRO is a failure. Turbine is slowly acquiring the SOE stigma.
I wish they would upgrade the graphics of Asheron's Call to modern high res graphics... make them into AC2 quality graphics and i'll play it again.
In your opinion. But there is alot of people who don't share your opinion.
I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.
"You have the right not to be killed"
The problem I have with it is that I read the book, saw the movie, and the story in LOTRO simply does not compare.
I agree; and I can't accept that hobbits are fighting through Eriador... It doesn't fit my thoughts about Middle-Earth. I played beta, but I never will subscribe.
But I'm sure LotRO isn't a failure yet; let's see what will happen after AoC/WarOnline release.
Signatures are boring things.

I completely agree!
You got that right !

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
