LotRo hasn't released in china or Asia yet. It will surpass 1mil easily .
Asian markets are unpredictable. SOE tried to tap this market with EQ and EQ2 and met dismal failure. Do not assume that WoW's success in these markets will ensure success for LOTRO. Asia is very fond of Blizzard for Starcraft and Warcraft RTS, so unless they have a LOTRO fetish (A very western IP), I don't see them breaking 1 mil. But I hope they do, it'd be nice to see an MMO success instead of an MMO failure once in a while. Not saying that 172,000 boxes is a failure - but for an IP as huge as LOTR - and some decent press reviews, I think people were expecting more.
But I'm still going to mock the OP for his 'guarantee'
Someone said this about Vanguard as well at some point. Ho hum
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...
LotRo hasn't released in china or Asia yet. It will surpass 1mil easily .
WoW is the last major western p2p MMO to have any kind of success in Asia. CoX closed the korean servers last month and both EQs were quickly pulled. Keep in mind LoTRO isn't the father of fantasy literature in the eyes of most Asians (as most haven't read or heard of the books) as it is to many in NA so there is little if any evidence to support a successful run in Asia, although it is possible given the similar mechanics to WoW (I did not say wow clone so don't go there). Please use some facts for backup before you make such lofty predictions.
In the end, logic and reason always beat out fanboys.

China isn't like the mother load of MMO gaming. You know that DAoC, EQ2 and SWG shut down in Asia? (among other western MMOs) Western games generally don't do well over there. Do you think SOE made those SAGA (or whatever they called them, the ones with the anime look) customization options for us westerners? No...........
Blizzard has a few things going for it, thats why they succeed. Blizzard makes one of the most played games in Asia, Starcraft, and its a legendary brand name becasue of that. WoW (and all bliz games) is culturally neutral , LotRs isn't.
I don't dislike LotR, I think is a very well made game and I enjoy playing it but its a fantasy that this is going to break any records at this point. There are not even any log in queues on the 11 U.S. servers they do have.
On top of it, who cares how it does in Asia? Does it make a difference? No matter how you slice it, its native audience so far (U.S. because thats all we know so far, I'm interested in the EU unit sales also) didn't fall all over themselves to play it dispite the massive advertising blitz. This Asia epeen stuff really is irrelevent. Weee so the Chinese like WoW, apparently more then we do, so what? It means nothing to us as gamers. There are still over a million people playing L1 and L2 each does that make a difference here?

Agreed. Of course, Turbine could do like Blizzard, and make only those in the west pay for expansions, but give them to China for free.

maybe the OP hoped that if enough people agreed, and it is on the internat, then it MUST be true and/or come true?
I wish all good to LOTRO cause it is one of the few MMorpg that launched withouth being bugged and broken to death, so it would be nice to have it succeed.

That is the great thing about LotR is it is a high quality production. 172k subs isn't to shabby either. Pre-WoW that was an awesome number. Looking at all the releases in the last 3 years, 172k is still a very good number in fact its one of the best. Like I said, I'm sticking to my 250k at 1 year which is very, very good for an MMO.
People are really getting down because its not at a million but what they fail to realize is that very very few MMOs ever reach that and in the western market none ever do. On top of it, what difference does it make? Play if you like, ignore it if you don't. I wish DAoC still had 172k users....
172k is horrible. Firstly games cost alot more now then they used to. Secondly its a huge IP. Expectations were huge, 172k sold boxes could be anywhere from 0-172k subs lol. Meaning for all we know the game has less than 100k subs which is plain horrible for a big budget game like it,.

It is 172k sales, not subs. Subs could be a fraction of that. 250k good? EQ2 gets that.

Meh, either way...it doesn't put money in my pocket lol.............172k, 250k or a billion.......It all just adds to some suits bonus check at the end of the year.
I would rather see DAoC get back to 172k because frankly its a better game.
I don't agree. Sucess and failure of big budget games can have far reaching consequences. So far companies are all jumping into the pool cause they get sold by many developers by using the WOW factor. OMG look they have 9 million subs we can have a chunk of that. Sadly that isnt paying dividents as it appears there isnt as much room for new games as previously thought.
As more and more games fail or simply underperform, companies will be less likely to want to publish new projects. So far it has been Vanguard, now LotrO has massively underperformed, Gods and Heroes has failure written all over it, Star Trek Online is made by the same company and if G&H fails I wouldnt be surprised if it gets canceled or handed off to someone else.
In my opinion what happens when WAR and AoC come out will have massive consequnces on the industry.

Yes but that course has already been set. 3 years of trainwreck games vs the unbeatable WoW. I don't necessarily disagree with you. Success generally breads success but arguing over sub numbers is pointless in any event. If people like it, they will pay for it. Its not like Turbine didn't advertise this game. There are ads literally everywhere. Time will tell.
LotR isn't "failing" by a long shot its just not living up to the epeen wavers. Vanguard, AA, D&L and games like that, failed and did more damage to the future of MMOs then you or me will ever know.

EQ2 did not have 250k subs 4 months after launch. If you recall they had a sh*t disaster launch. It took them YEARS to sort out that mess of a launch and a ton of revamps.

Hmmm........most MMOs never even break 150k at all. only a very few break 250 and you can count the amount that went over 500k on one hand (western).
4 months, probably not long enough but its well within the performance of the 250 range. MMOs do NOT cap out in subs at 4 months they generally grow their first few years before they stagnate UNLESS they have a sh*t launch which isn't the case here. Boxes, subs whatever. It takes this little thing called TIME. One thing, its NOT going to hit 1 million in any single market.
the 172k sales is for America only, with Europe included as well then the number of subscribers LOTRO has could be higher. Thinking about it, if theres 172k sales for America and theres 12 servers to account for that, and theres 12 European servers then that could also be a similar amount of sales making 350k sales possibly.
They are over 900,000 active subs now. They will reach their 1 mil+ subs within the next 30 days easily. But how fast did World of Warcraft hit 1 mil subs? I know it was released in America Nov 04. I'm thinking Feb 05 is when it broke 1 mil, but not quite sure. Looks like LoTRO is gathering online players almost as quickly as WoW did after it's release. But that isn't saying as much because now there are millions of mmo players looking for a new game thanks to WoW. OR is LoTRO stealing customers from the WoW numbers even more impressive? - Thoughts?
There was allegedly:
600k preorders.
1000k open beta invites.
And now there is 172k boxes sold, alot of extra extra with cherry on top campaigns to buy the box.
No I don't think they will reach the 1000k sub mark this year even.

WoW as last I heard had about 9 mil subs. Take 9 times the 12 LoTRO servers and that's 108. 108 servers is just slightly less then the current number of WoW servers, is it not?
Yeah 9 million divided by 1 million is 9
12 times 9 is 108 yep.
But seriuosly WoW has 457 NA+EU servers to those 9 million people.
108 servers is NOT in any way possible just slightly less then 457 servers. NO!
