QuestionableQuestionable Member Posts: 653

I'm confused on why people think Darkfall isnt going to come out.

Please list the reasons why.

    1. It's been in development for I think 6 years now.

    2. It promises a lot of features that some think are too good to be true, or something.

That's the two reasons that are probably most prominent...

Because it's been on the market for so long that many computers that were modern when it was announced aren't even sold anymore?

Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
    It all sucked.

Well in 2003 they scratched it and started all over so basically its only been in "true" development for 4 years.

So because its a really good game they think it cant hold up?

So its because it is an older game? Kinda dumb if you ask me.

I guess i should ask for GOOD reasons.

    My opinion...

Darkfall is trying to be far too much.  You can't fit everything you want into the launch of a game.  Get the basics down and get it released...add content as it becomes developed.

Also, Darkfall has no "real" money behind it...they have no big name company pushing them to get the game done, which can be a good thing...but they also do not have the money it would take to hirer a large staff to get the job done.

Personally, I don't think we will ever see Darkfall, and if we did it will only be a fraction of what has been promised.  The developers have bitten off far more than they can chew.  Too bad, as it sounds like a great concept.

im very confused why no big companies will suport Darkfall............

the game content are so rich that they'll earn the money back in no time. Heck, if i have the money ill invest in it!! >.<

Apparently they can they seem to have it all developed and mostly completed. So idk how its trying to do to much.

So they're making it with monopoly money? Seriously apparently the company is being funded by a military funded company so...how is that not "real" money. they have  30-60 people if im not mistaken so  how large do u want it?

It seems like they have alll that mostly completed so how did they bite off more than they chew?

A pretty big company is investing in it. A military-funded one so  yea its supported by a pretty big company.

Unless your talking about a publisher but a game like this it would be the best for it to self-publish. You know creative and control and all.

Well for starters it has no selling point that would seem to make it interesting to an investor.  The fantasy MMO has been done to death, why would someone willing put money toward something that would be going up against WoW, Lotro, etc?  It's a losing venture from a business prospective.  Sure, Darkfall is offering innovation and new things to the MMO genre...these things are untested and could fail, making is a risky investment.

The game has no license either.  You want a game to get some money backing it then us something that is well known.  Turbine did it with LotrO and D&D (two names that need no introduction into the world of fantasy).  Blizz worked off their own years of gaming background.  Sure it does not always work, anyone actually play the Matrix Online?  But it would be easier to garner investment if they had a product people knew about.  Darkfall is just random fantasy world # 735 with some new junk thrown in.

    'Nuff said.

Don't get me wrong, I am looking forward to Darkfall as well.  I just know I will be playing Warhammer Online long before I ever see Darkfall launch.  I do hope I am wrong though.

im gonna have to ask do you even look at darkfall? Its very different then any game  ive seen. Tell me another game that has NO safe-zones , a mmo that is based around player skill then time played, a mmo that gives you enough freedom to be w/e you  like. Oh and it does have an investor BTW.

Oh i see so it can only be successful if its from a well known company? That there isnt really true  as you've said so why cant it work they other way around?

Apparently  you didnt see the MOST part in there. Its not completely done. Since they've completed most of it whats stoping them from completing the rest?

The obly vids of it looks like its been patched together by an amatuer. There really are not any vids of it. Even if it is released it will blow, devs can promise the world that doesn't mean the game will have those promises. Everyone and their moms know DF is vaporware.

Well it may not be but i don't even care... it has no buget in anycase.

lol I see so your anti-df. I can tell by the lack of any supporting statements. There are vids check the website. And if you truly believe that sort of logic then i guess WAR is going to "blow" like AoC, you know cause they promise things. Well there is no evidence that its vaporware. so give me some.

    Yes it does.

I am going to go out on a limb and assume you have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to game development, marketing or selling.  I work in an industry where these very factors are at work each day.

Number one...is the product something that can be sold?  Darkfall is just another MMO set in a fantasy setting.  Sure it has new features and such, but in the end...it's a fantasy MMO...and that's all.  There are currently a metric ton of such games on the market.  Also, it has nothing backing it that would get people to play it.  Look at the two up and coming Fantasy MMOs...Conan and WAR...both huge names in the fantasy industry...wtf is Darkfall?  It would have been better if Darkfall was a sci-fi MMO....at least it would have a marketable selling point (there are few on the market).

Number two...what would make people want to play Darkfall over the other Fantasy MMOs available.  New features!  Darkfall has it's share of them...and most have not been tested in any way in the MMO market place.  This would have been fine 5-8 years ago, when people did not have certain expectations about MMOs...times have changed.  The advancements that Darkfall is offering look fantastic...but they are not going to get the average gamer jumping to play.  You need to sell to masses...why make a game if it makes no money...it's pointless.  If only hardcore mmo players will buy and support the game (and they being such a fickle bunch) then the game is going to fail (can you say Vanguard...sure it's still around, but no one can claim it a success).

I hope we do see Darkfall.  It's going to need a publisher to put it out there...self-publishing is of course an option...if you want no advertisement or promotion (this equals lack of sales).  I just don't think it will happen anytime soon.

So just because its in a certain genre its out and people dont even look at the features? Just because it isnt being made by a huge company doesnt mean its going to flop. If people look at the features its going to peak their intrest thats for sure. Tell me you arent interested in darkfall.

It does something new and  original that itself is going to attract some people to it. Sure it wont attract the wow farmers but it willl attract a different sort of people. People that like to play games like UO or Shadowbane and will appeal to those who play games like quake or halo 2.

Honestly I dont think  they are going to choose a publisher. They arent going to go through all this trouble and lose creative control and have it possibly ruined.

Ok...you're missing the point.  Stop looking at Darkfall from the perspective of a player and start looking at it from the point of view of an investor...one that has to make decisions based on reality...not based on their own opinions.  Sure you may love the product and be willing to play it...but would you fork over you companies name and money to support it?

Original ideas do not attract as many people as you may think.  You have to appeal to the majority...Darkfall would not appeal to the majority.  I can safely say that most MMO players have no interest in twitch based game play.  I can also safely say thay most people that are into MMOs do not want the game to be more skill based than stat based...thus making all the time they spent leveling and gearing pointless.

In any event...we could go back and forth all day on this...you seem like a thick headed person that does not care to see my opinion...only argue against it.  I am hoping that Darkfall is everything they want it to be...will be a great game, just have no faith we will see it.

Enough said. Shadowbane is a game populated by the lowest of the low of the social rejects. Nobody in their right mind would ever pay money for that kind of gameplay. Well... Some will. May be. If they are not too busy doing SM movies.

Is this some kind of marketing research BTW? Like find out why people think DF is  a vaporware and write up a report? So developer could counter it with a PR actions?

Well a well funded company is supporting it  Aventurine. So  how many investors does it need when it has one that is giving it all that it needs.

Your very right it will probably not appeal to MOST MMO players but it will attract those who like twitch based combat. Your right again most MMO players wont like skill>play time but it appeals to people who play twitch based games. Which is also a large community if they put ads in the right places plenty of halo and quake players are going to go to it.

No i see your point im just saying that its not completely true. Yes it wont appeal to most MMO players but it will to a whole new community which gives it a lot of potential. Yes its risky but it could be a huge success.

I meant shadowbane as in the town seiging. Not whole game play.

No i just see alot of reasons without much behind it.

    I am wondering 2 things.

    1) new poster? I think you should log under your regular posting name and grow a pair.

    2) There is no evidence other then a few pictures that they have anything done. Are you directly connected to the company to make such broad statements as mostly done?

The time issue does not go away because the had a do over after 2 years. It is still in the 4th year of development with little to no info about the mechanics. There is generalized faqs about PvP and Content, but there are no specifics. No clear idea how characters will actually work, skills, items, anything concrete. The other thing as of the last released video (on their website) the graphics already look dated and again they show graphics of "in game" footage but no UI or anything that would indicate underlying mechanics.

They had guild beta sign-ups in 2005 and 2 years later they are still sitting on them after they said beta would happen very shortly. The latest beta faq is from 2005.

As to their funding. Aventurine is a company founded to create Darkfall - it's just Razorwax plus funding (and thus more employees), in Greece. They've done some simulation projects for military type stuff while working on Darkfall. That's pretty incidental to the game's development. So you big military contractor is actually a few simulation scripts... hardly earth shattering money.

Aventurine said they would like a publisher but if they cannot find one they will self publish. To date they have not found a publisher.

The simple truth is DF will be release and be on par with ShadowBane. The graphics will be outdated by a good 3 - 5 years, it will be riddled with bugs, and at the end of the day it will be a shadow of the game it was suppose to be. I hope I am wrong but the realist in me says I am right.

    Yes im a new poster

There is a video and quite alot of screenshots but im guessing you dont look it up often do you? and no to your second question

Have a question about it then go ahead and ask me about it and ill answer with what i know about it.

So they missed their beta date is that really so important. Most every game misses it. Nothing new.

I didnt say it was earth shattering but we dont know specifics we dont know what they were or how much they were worth. So it could be a lot more than what your trying to make it seem like

Yes their looking for a publisher because its much easier but to go to a lot of work and hand it over and trust its care in the hands of a stranger who has his best intrest in mind doesnt seem like something a smart person would do. So they may be looking for specific control over the game that most publishers dont allow.

the graphics are seem good and will most likely get a graphics update.

Edit:sorry for taking so long TV distracted me

You now admit we don't know much that is a step in the right direction. Or is that a valid argument for you and not others?

You  don't know how much of the game is done.

You don't know what "features" will be in the game.

You don't know how much money they actually have.

You don't know why they do not have a publisher.

You don't know IF the game will ever be released.

So that clears up what everyone DOES NOT know. Those are some pretty big things. My question to you is what do YOU know that makes you believe this game will be anything it says it will?

If you DON'T KNOW anything to answer my question then your whole post in pointless.

Also what prompted you to come on to these boards and make a caustic troll post your very first time out?

You expect me to know everything while the game is still in Alpha? What game do you know has that amount of information out while its still in alpha stage?

Your right i dont know exactly but i know enough that its getting to its closing alpha phase.

Your right Everything they listed and have been told is a complete lie.

Your right their completely poor and this is all just a hoax but since your so wise tell me.

Your right Giving up creative control to a bunch of people helped a lot of games in the past. Not one failure ever right?

Your right and AoC and WAR arent coming out as well why? because they arent out now.

Those questions can be asked to any game that isnt released so what makes those questions evidence that darkfall isnt coming out.

You are so right they should tell you every basic thing about whats going on. Really dont tell me you honestly believe that. They arent going to tell you everything about the game because it can change especially since its just starting to come out of alpha.

First let me ask you a few questions. tell me how do mobs react in AoC are they static or dynamic? How exactly does the seige work? How does PvP work is it anywhere or certain areas? There are questions in every game that you can and cannot answer. There are things in every game that you dont and do know. This game is still in alpha phase and we know a lot of game content then most games in this phase know.

There is a date they hope to get it out. Isnt that the same thing as what other companies do. Will it be let down? idk only time will tell.

There are many SS's and have talk to some that played it.Also there is a video plenty of proof what makes you think that what you think is correct.

Sorry kinda of a mess got distracted in some of it.
