The real question is, how many AoC fans who have waited and then waited some more will be going to W

Title basically says it all.

My opinion is Funcom at this point is taking WAY WAY WAY to long to release, I have actively been following this game now for over 2 years and I have to say that they have till October 30th for me.  Another postponement will have me trying WAR or another promising game, one way or the other my wait is over on October 30, 2007.  I am done waiting.

Alright that is just totally uncalled for. I've had my spats with AoC fans but thats just hitting below the belt.

I would not tell any developer to hurry a game up after Vanguard, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. If funcom thinks the game needs more time, then they should take more time.

Following it for 2 years? That's it? 2 years is nothing when it comes to developing an MMO. WAR has been in development for over 2 years now. Mythic got the license in May of 2005. We are in July 2007. 2 years, 2 months and another 6 months to go.

Saying you want the game rushed out is just asking for trouble. It's this kind of attitude that gave us the Scars of Vellious, Shadows of Luclin and Planes of Power expansions in Everquest with it's horribly unfinished content. Other companies have seen how successful those expansions were and have followed its trends by releasing unfinished games knowing that players will buy the game regardless of whether or not it actually works. The last game I purchased that was like this was Anarchy Online in 2001. Not once since have I purchased a game on release that wasn't completed to the point of being fully playable with most game breaking bugs, glitches and problems fixed. By saying this, you are again reinforcing to the MMO industry (read as decision making executives and publishers) that you are willing to pay for an unfinished game and will pay monthly fees while the developer continues to work on fixing the problems with the game that should have been pushed back until they were fixed.

Unless my guild picks up Warhammer and falls in love, I won't be playing it.   I've watched what gameplay videos I could find, and damn it looks just like the same WoW type gameplay.  I played WAY too much WoW.  I got High Warlord and never wanted to play again.  3 months of 90 hour weeks of gameplay.   I KNOW I KNOW everyone yells WoW clone, but man it's true from what I've seen.  I wish a game came out that was soooo damn good.  I really don't care what game.   I just don't think Warhammer will be it for me.   I want FRESH!!!  It'll be AoC, or Pirates of the Burning Sea for me.  I fthey both suck  I'll be back here on the forums trying to find something else heh.

First off, I said I had been following it for over 2 years, not that it has been in development for 2 years.

Second, I didnt say I wanted anything rushed anywhere in my post, so please do not put words in my mouth.

Thirdly, if I had a chance to buy it tommorrow and play it as is, Yes, I would.  I do believe that the game is ready for the shelf, this is what monthly patches are for the small stuff.

Fourth, they have no one to blame but themselves that they are not yet in Open Beta.

Fifth, calling AoC "Unfinished" as you did in your post just shows how closely you have Not followed the game.

And finally, no I have never played any of the games you mentioned.

I don't think the game isn't going to be ready.  Funcom isn't a big believer in huge Beta tests.  The open beta will be to stress the servers not evalute gameplay.  I'd buy this game right now because I'd rather play a buggy games I like then druge around in one that I hate.

Funcom can use as long time as they want to make conan imo, if that will make the game better.. than they hopefully arent doing the same errors like many outher companys do.. releasing unfinished products..

and warhammer   no thanks..  than i rather stick with Everquest 2 and vanguard "when it is fixed"

AoC and WAR have been at odds for a long time. Your subject heading asks how many fans will go from AoC to WAR if the game is delayed. I think thats kind of insulting, and thats coming from someone who, as I said in the last post, has had spats with AoC fans.

Its like asking a vegetarian if they want to have a nice juicy steak cause the restaurant is all out of salad.

    ^ lol

yes I just likened AoC to a salad, deal with it

Obviously Funcom doesn't believe the game is ready for release, or it would be on shelves already. Only Funcom is in any kind of position to say whether or not a game is ready to be released. Yes, you are correct they are the blame as to why it isn't in Open Beta yet. But let me fill you in on a little bit of history about Funcom and why they are not rushing the game out the door.

Anarchy Online was a Sci-fi MMO developed by Funcom and released in 2001. I played it both during beta and shortly after release. I say shortly because I was hoping the problems of beta would have been fixed. To this day, Anarchy Online had the worst MMO release of any MMO I've ever had the experience of playing. Between the bugs, the lag that took you 45 minutes to get across a single city zone, the exploits, the server crashing and causing rollbacks that cost me days worth of time spent in game cumulatively, it's no wonder that Funcom is holding this back until they feel the game is finished. And I can't say I blame them.

As for me stating AoC is an unfinished game...well apparently Funcom seems to agree with me or the game would have been released and not pushed back to October 2007. Just because you think the game is finished, doesn't mean it is. Funcom is the only entity that can decide when it is finished. And after the fiasco that was Anarchy Online, you can bet they want to get this one right. To do anything else would be a huge blow to any kind of trust players had towards Funcom. We can use Vanguard as a good example, though technically it was Sigil's first game. This will be Funcom's second attempt at an MMO.

As much as a player base thinks a game is finished, until the developer/publisher decides a game is finished and ready for release, it will remain an unfinished game.

"Thirdly, if I had a chance to buy it tommorrow and play it as is, Yes, I would.  I do believe that the game is ready for the shelf, this is what monthly patches are for the small stuff."

This attitude is exactly what has put us into the state of affairs we are. Players saying, "Yep, just release the game. I'm ok paying while you take your time finishing the game is perfectly ok with me." Far too many developers are getting into the Release Now; Patch Later mentality and players are only reinforcing this with each broken game they buy. I didn't buy Vanguard. I knew what it was and I chose to speak in the only language they understand.

  • URMAKERURMAKER Member UncommonPosts: 671

i'm expecting them to push it back actually from all the "hands on" previews i've seen the 1 complaint is performance and thats on high end systems btw. i figure they'll try like hell to get it out around christmas though but who knows could slip to '08 or could release on time and be buggy as hell or smooth as butter who knows. i'd rather wait and let them get it right. the way i figure is that most of us  will try aoc and war anyways and we'll just play which ever we like the most which only makes sense.

Good post, I do understand your point and your concern for the industry and I respect that, and I am aware of the AO launch situation, although I never have played it.  But it is starting to look like to more than many, that they are starting to OVER COMPENSATE for AO.

Yes, polish, polish, polish.  But when is enough enough?  At some point they are going to have to say, "What the F%$K" lets make the plunge and release the game and see how we have done with 4 years of Blood, Sweat and tears.

Again I think another pushback now, definately would hurt them more than help them being the state the game is now.

You clearly don't know what you are talking about IAMTHEGAME, rushing an MMO is a stupid idea, if you really considering it, two years is nothing in the development of the game.  They are trying to make the game as perfect as possible and if you can't respect that it takes time then go play something else.

How do you know WAR will be released on time. These games take along time to make. Relax. It's just a game.

Im up to my neck now playing different MMOG's so if  WAR is pushed back some more i wouldn't mind to much as long as it plays well

when they release it. Im not interested in AoC, so for me that doesn't matter to much.

Seeing as how the chances of me subscribing to WAR are the same as the chances of me ever subscribing to WoW (and I'm one of the few apparently that can say I've never gone past a couple of days on their 14 day trial), I'd say AoC can take as long as it needs.

I think it is strange that this site is covered by opinions like this. There is a generation obsessed with instant gratification being raised, they have no patience. I have about 12 games on my list to hold me over until Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, or Heroes Journey comes out. Seriously, who buys a products based on release date? I buy products based on quality...

Actually, I think it is up to me to say when I feel I have waited long enough and do not wish to continue to wait, at least it was last time I checked.

I don't see why one has to exclude the other. I'm assuming this is an attempt to start a flame war between fans of either game? Both are strong IPs and both have their own rabid, loyal fan base. If upon release, one of these games is really disappointing, I'm sure there'll be an exodus from one to the other. I'm personally more excited for WAR, but if AoC looks appealing when it's released, sure I'd give it a shot. Would it dissuade me from playing WAR? Absolutely not. I'd like to remind anyone on either side who has their mind made up this early in the game of a little disaster that occured this past winter called Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.
