No they have 12K. man people cannot read. haha
Ummm yeah Fion. Cause 3v3 CTF PvP arenas are really "Hardcore non-carebear" PvP.....
--------------------------------------------- I live to fight, and fight to live.
Ok a more up-to-date chart of mmorpg sub numbers, and much more easy to use.... mmogdata.com Go there and go to All Subscribers and you can pick whichever ones you want. The most up-to-date shows DAoC sitting at 100K subs, and SWG sitting at 50K subs. both dropping from 06 to 07, but apparently this site used the data from mmorpgchart.com and updated it. So who knows how accurate the original data was considering the huge fluctuation form 06 to 07. So yeah, DAoC has more subs. Big whoop, sha bang.
The thing to me is I'm not a fanboi of any of these MMO's.. I was perhaps a fanboi of UO and SWG pre-cu... but nothing that exist today.. there is no point. If you don't like a game that's fine.. but what I was responding to was the claim Mr. Mark made of "facts".
I'm sorry WAR didn't win anything.. but as I stated.. if the game releases and gets a ton of subs.. and makes money.. they won the only award that matters.
SOE never releases subscription information... So any site that ever claimed to have SWG subs (there is no /who function that will show every player) is guessing.
You can log into DAoC.. on each realm and see the total (even if they are anon) so its possible.
I'm not sure there is any way to log into AO and check.. then again they run a total of two servers.
There was also an interview with Smedley that was linked to from this site... recently.. which is at:
"Star Wars Galaxies launched in June 2003 and has since sold more than 1.5 million boxes. For the first time in the history of Fan Faire, SWG fans were included in the festivities that drew an estimated 2,000 gamers. Currently, there are more than 100,000 active SWG accounts"
Now yes I personally responded in that thread.. that would mean a 6 to 7 percent retention rate (which is bad).
I came to post this since the above quoted site claims there are 50,000 subs... Who do you believe and why? or why would it matter.
My entire reason posting in this thread was.. I thought what he did was unprofessional... and in poor taste. His statement was what he said.. and in that statement his facts were not entirely factual.
Why even make the statement... give congrats to the winner.. talk about how great your product is going to be (WAR in this case) then go make it happen and stomp the competition into the dust. In the end.. that's how you win...
and to finally close my participation in this thread..
If you are here.. you should be an MMO player.. and in that sense you should want all of these games to be great... there is no better.. or shouldn't be. There should just be a ton of choices.. back when almost all games were single player (there was a time). I didn't hope that one company would make the only good game that year...
So this whole fanboi thing.. really does boggle me. I want more games and I want them all to be the best.
So if anyone thought my original post was anti WAR.. anti Mythic.. sorry .. but um no..
*edited to add*
two things..
1) To the person that claimed DAoCs server are lucky to have 200 people and classic 700 at prime time.. Since it was pointed out to me how I was pissed at mythic or something..
um no... the only cluster that short on players is the RP cluster... The other clusters while lack luster in total are easily in the 1000+ at peak times.. while the classic cluster can still hit over 2,000 people...
As of this moment 5:20pm pactic time the classic cluster is over 1900 people.. which is more than the 700 stated.. by a tad.
2) AO is not just a free to play game. There is a free to play client that has advertising and there is still a subscription based game. In fact the F2P client doesn't give access to any of the expansions.. other than possibly Notum Wars.
Like I said.. my only complaint was with a statement that I saw and still see as false.. Unless Mr. Mark would like to edit SWG out of his statement population wise.. don't care to get into fanboi politics.
Ummm yeah Fion. Cause 3v3 CTF PvP arenas are really "Hardcore non-carebear" PvP.....
Don't even TRY to get into that debate me Checkthis500. In WAR the PvP is totally carebear. No death penalty, item looting consists of randomly generated 'treasure' with no loss to the dying player. Heavy reliance on instanced PvP so that things can be 'fair', open world PvP objectives getting reset, or the loosing team getting huge buffs so that everything can be fair. It's totally carebear and the PvP has absolutely no long standing or even semi-perminent effect on the world.
There was a time when my hype for WAR was pretty damn high. But the more I heard about it, the more it looked like a complete 180 on Mythics part from the PvP of DAoC (though even that was fairly carebear, especially compared to old school UO.) I'm still looking forward to the game, but it's not for the PvP. Now that I've seen AoC's PvP, even if it was just a 3v3 CTF arena, it looked a hell of a lot more fun. And if posts on the official forums about folks that went and played it says anything, they thought so too.
Were getting a bit off topic. The last thing this forum needs is another AoC vs WAR post. And god's know the number of warboi's is getting so vast it's starting to outshine even the number of VG fanboi's pre-release lol.
On topic, I actually agree with Mark. Sure there was definitely some disappointment on behalf of the WAR devs. They are human after all. Not even nominated, thats gotta be sour. (Though personally I can see why, their showing was weak, laggy, and the much vaunted new lighting system turned out to be almost completely bogus and barely any better then DAoCs.) He was just spouting numbers (though his SWG numbers were WAY off the mark, his AO ones are fairly accurate, though at it's peak AO had about 150k subs, about 2 years after the game came out.) Anyway his numbers were mostly accurate and pre-release awards did in fact turn out to not mean a damn thing.
However, I played both games at release (and AO in beta,) and while AO's release was definitely one of the worst in the history of the genre. The game that was underneath was FAR better then DAoC in all respects accept PvP. Depth, PvE, amount of content, writing, art direction, class choices, innovation, on every mark.. accept PvP, AO was far superior. But of course, thats my opinion.
Meh. I've read all of those paragraphs before at some point. They're all very interesting.
I challenge you to provide a link to this 150K subs, since it's the only part of your post that's a fact, and I want you to prove that it's accurate.

Kind of like. Don't worry boys, we've seen this before. It's not the end of the world. We'll be fine. Kind of thing.
There wasn't anything negative towards AoC or Funcom. They pointed out games that had good trade show performances and had bad things happen to them after that due to either release or decisions later made. (ToA could be brought up right about now)
But I definitely didn't think it had any negative notes in it. All positive and just looking at the past to give hope for the future kind of stuff.
I could see how it could be taken as a stab, but I hardly think that's what it was meant to be. I mean he doesn't even mention AoC in the entire post. He just points out facts so that people don't start spouting doomsday theories IMO.

Anarchy Online is NOT free, it is your standard $15 dollars a month to play the game. The original version of the game released six years ago, with only one of the four expansions, is available to play in what essentially boils down to a free trial with an indefinite time limit.

And for the war lighting system being unimpressive, i will agree the screenshot comparisons were mediocre at best, but if you watch the newest video of it on mmorpg and flip to the end you can really see it in action.

Meaning that essentially its free to play... dont be stupid.
I don't think it matters. I hope both games are good. But they are both targetting different audiences. AoC is appealing to the Older Gamer audience with its emphasis on blood, gore, nudity and the M rating Considering Conan's I.P. is 75 years oldthrowing out vast appeal, while War is attempting to lure the Younger Nerdy Table Top Crowd, who like to play with little figures and paint them all nicely, and WoW Youngsters with the blatant Graphic Art Appeal of the previously mentioned game but with Similar Monsters Updated, and hoping that the audience that played DAOC will play a game 80%PvP 20% PvE.
There I helped you out a little - Just MY opinion btw. But if you want to throw around target audiences in a thread not even about it thats ok.
I know you are the master at spinning to suit your own misguided ends but its generally considered rude to alter someone elses post in a quote. Saying its your opinion does not make it any less so. You want to keep posting broken record defenses based on weak arguments, do it in your own post without taking someone elses.
Just my opinion, btw.

Well considering the majority siresper's posts smell a mile off this one wasn't worth the effort to respond to his "godly" persona.
EDIT: Now Antarious' post. That's some sour grapes. That guy is piiiiissed. haha. I can pretty much guarantee that his facts are straight there Ant. He is the CEO. Not some rep. That's Mark Jacobs writing that and he doesn't just pull facts out of thin air or make them up. He's pointing to actual facts. Sorry you're so upset by that. And the only reason that AO has "any" subs is because it's now free to play.
I guess my question is what am I pissed about? Do I work for Funcom, EA, Mythic or SOE?
Do I own stock in these companies... I still play DAoC from time to time.. I play SWG, EQ2 and even Vanguard.
Now I was pointing out false information. Since Mr. Mark isn't lying... could you point me to where there is an official statement that DAoC ever had more subs than SWG? That it was ever even listed in a top 10 most populated MMO list?
Oh you can't but I'm lying or pissed.. it was Mr. Mark that claimed that they had more subs.. not me.
If anything from my post history I'm very anti SOE... and haven't had a lot of anything to say about Funcom or Mythic. EA perhaps..
So again what actual facts?
AO in fact has more paying subs than free subs... so where is your source on their sub numbers?
I mean we're talking facts here...
Right now.. North American logins for DAoC are... 5,429... and 1700+ of that are on the classic cluster.
Do you really want to debate whether say.. SWG since Mr Mark brought it up only has 5400 logged in right now?
So basicly two things..
what am I supposed to be pissed about?
and... what actual facts? If he or you can back up his subscription claim alone.. I'll buy it.. but since you nor he can.. I won't.
Personally was pointing out the fact.. that he is in fact pulling facts out of his arse.. and I'm sorry they didn't win.. but even if they did win its not what would convince me to buy the game.
AO is not even in the same league. That game was and still is the suck. Compare SWG and Daoc all you want, but keep AO where it is... In the minor league.
What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...
Not true. SWG at one time (just post the CU) had over a million subscribers. And today, 6 years later, AO has FAR more people playing it then DAoC. During prime-time most of DAoC's servers are lucky to have 200 people on them. Even the most popular servers, the 'classic servers' that don't have the worst expansion in history, ToA, are lucky to break 700 on a saturday night. Maybe when they were popular DAoC had more players, but was it the better game? In my opinion, not even CLOSE. Better PvP perhaps, but AO was never PvP centric.
Anyway, AoC has won 2 awards for 'best online game' from GC now. Thats 'best ONLINE GAME' across all platforms, not just best MMOG. Grats to them!
SWG with "one million" subs? You are completely delusional... Never went over 300-350k. http://mmogchart.com/
What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...
That's weird. I'm pretty sure that Asheron's Call had more then 120,000 subs. Wouldn't swear to it, though. Personally, I think this whole argument is retarded. As Rodney King said, "Can't we all just get along?"
He was dead on about AO though, and I think that was the point. SWG was thrown in the quote as a sidebar and barely mentioned.
I am sorry, but check the original post made by him, AO is mentioned once, just like SWG, and he goes on to spew some hate about both equally. Why do I call it hate? Cause I damned sure can't call it facts.
Dude, get your facts straight before posting, it will really help you to stop this lookinglikeanidiot complex you seem to have.

No, meaning that AO is pay to play, and classic AO is free to play with ingame advertisments. There are plenty of people including myself who pay to play the game, rendering Sires argument null and void.

Anarchy Online is NOT free, it is your standard $15 dollars a month to play the game. The original version of the game released six years ago, with only one of the four expansions, is available to play in what essentially boils down to a free trial with an indefinite time limit.
Meaning that essentially its free to play... dont be stupid.
Damn, owned

Well considering the majority siresper's posts smell a mile off this one wasn't worth the effort to respond to his "godly" persona.
These awards are stupid, just look at the poeple that voted for them? The only rewards i trust are gdc stuff and thats it!
Here are your facts: http://mmogchart.com/AO is not even in the same league.
No, we can't get along.
TWO GAME ENTER, ONE GAME LEAVE. TWO GAME ENTER, ONE GAME LEAVE.
I am sorry, but check the original post made by him, AO is mentioned once, just like SWG, and he goes on to spew some hate about both equally. Why do I call it hate? Cause I damned sure can't call it facts.
Meaning that essentially its free to play... dont be stupid.
No, meaning that AO is pay to play, and classic AO is free to play with ingame advertisments. There are plenty of people including myself who pay to play the game, rendering Sires argument null and void.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
