It's hilarious that you can find idiots bringing their mouth-breathing WOW comparisons even to SWG.
Strange words considering how SOE turned their back on the then current subscribers and gutted the game to mimic WoW playstyle in a lame attempt to grab those subscriptions.
Some people have fun playing with trolls and faries while some have fun playing to beta test a game that removes content and slowly reintroduces it over the next several years. I guess you could call that "free" content if you look at in sideways with your eyes half closed.
Good luck on the SWG comeback though. It sounds like a few of the current players feel the game is finally ready for launch or relaunch or whatever it would be on the 4th attempt.
Originally posted by ekic I loved preCU, CU, and now the current system. you're either confused or... not that smart. The NGE is not gone (and never will go away), if it was than people wouldn't be gone. I don't blame them for not trying anymore cause.. Because WoW is what Smedley wants SWG to be like...but they're not capable of (or willing to) copy the things WoW really has going for it.
WoW's UI and targeting is vastly superior to SWG's attempt to imitate it.
The preCU, heck, even the CU UI and targeting system was vastly superior to the NGE abomination that was forced on us. Even now, with being able to try to bring back the old way of doing things, it's clunky and stilted in comparison. Toss in the lag, which is exacerbated by the idiotic particle effects, with the inability to accurately target the nearest mob to you, and you've got guaranteed frustration.
Have I mentioned that the NGE devs admitted that for this combat system to work right you'd need collision detection and there's no sign at all that they have any intention of bringing it into the game? That they deliberately nerfed mounts to the WoW style dismount and poof for fear that mounts would be used to block others in combat....the way they might actually be used in the real world?
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Spoken like someone that hasn't played the game in a while because the game is far from the NGE now and yes the players are returning too. Have fun twinkling those fairies

for me this right here is one of the reasons that Star Wars is a great movie and one of the reasons to me that made SWG a great game. yes it was not perfect but dam once you took a minute to see what depth and fun this game was it was no way you good not tell me that this was not something special.
i would guess most vets here have tried this game once or twice over this past year, SOE has given out a free vet trial every time they release a chapter, i think we played enough to know if its good or not.
Keep paying that 15 a month im sure SOE thanks you

The combat system is still the pseudo-FPS system, they just added an optional poorly implemented target lock ststem on top of it. It is still a class based game, but they added WoW's talent system to it. They even copied WoW's talent UI. The game still has the same Benny Hill movement system which makes everything look ridiculous, along with ever more obnoxious particle effects in place of animations.
The game is currently a slightly mutated version of the NGE. It is an unfun mess. Ripping off even more game systems from WoW, and adding poorly implemented versions of content that was removed for not being 'Star Warsy' enough, does not change the fact that the core game is still the NGE. They may have added a few bells, whistles, and other shiney things to distract the folks who are still willing to throw away money every month based solely on the "Star Wars" name, but the current game is still the unfun mess it has been since November 15, 2005.
I guess WOW eventually bored me so much, a return to SWG at the news of the Chapter 6 release of Beast Master was intriguing enough to warrant a few more months of play-testing the NGE. Old habits settled in quickly anyway in the end and now I am bored again. I do think a number of SWG veterans returned from other MMO's to see if SOE could be forgiven or not. Something could be said for the veteran rewards for returning after a long hiatus. House Demolition was a fiasco event designed to make current players feel like they were socking it to the veteran players who left their houses where they left them. I wasn't 100% satisfied coming back to SWG, but sure as hell couldnt stand another minute in WOW facing the grind. I have become jaded. I want something new now.
I am in Retro-Mode till APB comes out or Blizzard suprises me with a Starcraft MMO. I am waiting for CCP to release avatars from their ships in EVE Online too. GTA Vice City, Dawn of War and Homeworld 2 mods are entertaining me for awhile. I also Nuked millions playing Defcon.

I'm really looking forward to TFC2 until a good and innovative MMO comes out.
I suspect TFC2 will keep me pre-occupied for quite some time until this happenes.

How is it an FPS hyrbid still? Its the same as CU minus the next attack queue and it has a faster combat speed.
I still use mouse mode, still use auto-aim, still use auto attack, and I still use my toolbar actions with 1-= or the mouse. I still have full cam rotatation to watch the action from any angle while I play.
And again don't judge the game by its level and expertise system..there is a whole attribute, exotic skill mods, and (Pre-CU style) buff stacking..that happens to be more customizable to play style and char customization.

Sorry Mr.Wizard but you are the one not actualy really smart. Meaning you have not played the game, have you played pre-cu? if not then sorry you have no idea what you are talking about. The reason for this is that some people are so damn arrogant and simply are so incridible closeminded that for those indeed the game has not improved. Also we have individuals that keep comparing hte game with WOW cause thats what they read the game was heading so without them actualy thinking about it themselfs they copy that and say all the time SWG tries to be like WOW, you would be amazed how many people enjoy SWG but do not like WOW's playstyle cause most that like SWG do not like linuar type of MMO but like the sandbox style SWG still delivers, and i'm sorry that people like you need their handholds, cause sorry that is the only explanation i can make out of hte fact some of you complain that much.
Now try and be open minded cause thats what gamers do. Sorry the crap some of you bring to this forum should put you guy's in a deep shame. Futhermore i really wish SOE would make a pre-cu server as that will definitly BACKFIRE at those disgrunted VETS cause then the majority of new players will defintly not understand why peop[le would have been that disgrunted all this time about them wanting pre-cu back. You have to been there and atleast been there from release to CU/NGE to know what i'm talking about. It was the community for the biggest part that made the game, and some of you are so confused that you still think we have hte same community as we had back then. If we had sure pre-cu might work today. But it seems most of you disgrunted VETS just like it to play ignorant and not notice complaint out of other games. If some of you VETS would indeed know more about games and mmorpg in general maybe you would finaly understand that SWG is nothing like NGE if it was i would not be playing it. But then again you disgrunted VETS do not want to believe it cause you stuck in the past and unable to let go. Wonder if those individuals have such a hard time addepting in rl as they seem to have this problem with games.
Simple proof and FACT to show how confused some disgrunted VETS are is just by looking at the SWG topic Star Wars Galaxies: Editorial: Audience Alienation(12345 ... Last) I mean look at those reaction, its pretty pathetic to see so many responses from a copy/past editorial from 2005, which was written countless times back then, and what is more funny IT BECAME A EDITORIAL , sort of shows you what type of passion this site mmorpg.com has towards this industrie. NOT!!!
I played pre CU, CU and NGE. To be honest, I hardly remember much about those older days, so many MMOs have come and gone since then. The only real impression I have left from pre CU/CU are, it had a lot of broken professions, all everyone did was grind on Bols to get to Jedi, my guild was pretty cool and no one went into space because no one in my guild had a joystick and what content there was, was f**ked up and never worked right.
Dunno, I often wonder about the how some of these folks function in RL when they can hardly understand a video game, a toy of recreation, made some changes. How do they react when the boss wants to do something different? Fly off the handle, have a raging fit, quit and lock themselves into a room and bang their heads on a wall for 2 years over it?
SWG was, is and always will be just a video game, if it was anything else to an individual player then....well...never mind. Play it, don't play it, who the heck cares what it was 2 or 3 years ago? No one is moaning about the changes they did to EQII over the last 2 years, or the changes to WOW over the last year or so...they change. Thats what MMOs do. Play something else cause the "magical days" of pre CU are not coming back. Todays market doesn't want that sort of grind focused, unfinished, broken crap anymore. The game was totally f**ked up pre-CU. It still has issues today, like all MMOs...none of them are perfect, let me know when one rolls in that is.

Let me ask you something. What is/was your favorite non-MMO video game?
Let me ask you something. What is/was your favorite non-MMO video game?
Thats a tough question, I can appreciate a lot of games for a lot of different reasons. Why? As you can see from my sig, I can just as easily enjoy an RPG, RTS or Shooter. I don't think I have a "single favorite". I tend to either like a game or don't and put it down.

This shouldn't be a tough question. I'll even make it easier for you. What's one of your favorite non-MMO game?

Just pick any of the 4 in my sig for whatever illustration you are going to do. Based on your post history I can pretty much guess what you are going to do next...maybe I'm wrong /shrug go for it
1st off, let me say I left SWG about 2 months ago over the C6 combat Downgrade. I assume that alot of you actually like C6 from reading some of the back posts, and I can certainly understand why.
You got a piece, or what you believe to be a piece of your old game back. There are several posts stating that its "CU" again or even in reference with pre-Cu at times. There are other posts about BM being CH. Another slice of the pie comes back for some. There are posts about the targeting system being "put back in". Another slice of the pie for a few. I'm happy for you. Alot of in-game vets have made post after post on the SWG forums for the last year and a half wanting to chip away at the NGE rock. I was there, I seen them.
However, it would seem that the masses of former vets want ALL their game back, not just a slice here and there in an NGE wrapper. You are not going to change the minds of these vets, sorry, it seems to be all or nothing. And I can certainly see their point also. By screaming and name calling, you are doing nothing to help your cause. They are sure not going to re-sub so you have more to kill in PVP by calling them idiots.
But, you all who got your slices did it on the backs of another player base, that SOE created. People like me, who started with NGE, there just wasn't so many of us, thank God. And just like you, we liked our game also. Again, I state, that if I was in your position, I might have done the exact same thing as you. Although, SOE created another player base with NGE, changed the game on them, and now, they are disgruntled, unsubbed, vets.
So now, the community who really likes the game(s) that SOE put out all under 1 wrapper of SWG, is split. The people who played pre-Cu, CU, NGE, before GCW revamp, or C6 Combat downgrade are NOT at fault here. The people screaming that they got CH, additional difficulty, targeting system changes, etc, etc, and are now making posts about "Get rid ofl Jedi". "give us back this and that" are not at fault here either. SOE changed the game for ALL of these changes, they created separate player bases for each of these changes, and finally created dis-gruntled vets out of each and every change. The community was about the best thing in the game, while I was there and that is exactly what I miss the most being out of it. And, now, this is the community that SOE has made. Screaming, yelling at the top of their lungs, and ready to do battle at the drop of a forum hat (I find even myself in on that 1), Acting like 12 year olds. "I got my piece of my toy, you can't have it back the way it was, but it great ,looky here" and "I wouldn't want your toy, your messed up for even wanting such a broken toy".
I would have thought that every player, former and currant, would have come together to say a definite "NO MORE CHANGES!!! MAKE NEW CONTENT, EVEN IF ITS SOMETHING WE LOST!!!!" ( like they did with BM, u could opt in or opt out) but thats not what happened. I guess some are so happy to see even a small % of anything returned after 2 years of being without it, they really don't care about anything except their own experience. And I admit, I just might have fallen under that spell also if I'd been waiting for it for 2 years.
Sorry guys, if you like it great. Enjoy your game. But you are not going to re-populate servers by more and more changes to existing stuff. All it does is really tick off some of your existing players to hit the cancel button. From what I've seen is these vets want their game back, not yours, not what SOE is trying to peddle today, and not a slice here and there. They tried it. SOE has had 2 vet trials since C6, the 14 day following release of C6 and now the 21 day for Sept. They know what's there. A small percentage said, "OK, this is enough" and most of the others said "This ain't it, I'm outta here again" Remember all the posts on the SWG forums saying just that? There were so many that SOE cut off the trail accounts ability to post on their forums. Bad PR. But the changes have taken away a bunch of the existing people that played the game. Kauri, my server, got hit bad. The vets who actually came back transfered from the ghost server, what few of them there was. Existing players hit the cancel button in droves. Then, whole entire guilds (LOL guilds of 20 people, but, hey, it was a big guild for Kauri) transfered due to NO pvp on Kauri. Most went to bloodfin. So with the transfers, it may very well seem like there are a few good servers now. But Kauri? RIP
I want my game back too. Figure that has 2 chances of happening. Slim and none. OK, really just none. All of the above is what Fishermaji, on your boards is preaching about. All of this is what has affected this game. And players didn't do it. SOE did. This is furthered by the fact that it is extremely hard to replace SWG. Personally, I don't want to play a game with elves in it. I'm 51, and I guess, a little too old for elves. There isn't a whole lot out there, ATM. But that will change. Conan is months away with a mature rating. (Not really for me), but STO and SGW are coming to, and that could be. I like the IPs just as much as SW. SWG, in order to save the game Du Der, needs to finally get there heads out of the perverbial place before these other games come out and vets, like me, are gone forever. If they keep the CUNGE method of development, well, instead of just Kauri, it very well might be RIP - SWG.
2. times have changed...dramatically (lots and lots more MMO's)
3. star wars is in hibernation mode because of the movies.
this game will never reach the level that pre NGE was at or any other MMO in the market. it will get more subscribers...and lose some, its the natural cycle of an MMO.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Bloodfin is experiencing server transfers, but overall is losing accounts. My guild consists mainly of adults, most with multiple accounts. In the last two weeks nearly all of us have cut back to one account due primarily to boredom. This game is not and will not "comeback". It's a boring steaming pile of dung. There has been no meaningful content since Mustafar. The loot is still the same as it has been for two years plus. It's a boring waste of time.

If you already know the "illustraion" I'm trying to make then my point is made. It's all a matter of how it relates to your own experiences, and putting yourself in someone else's shoes goes a long way to understanding.

I want everyone to look at that.
Now SWG was never a finished game. On every "combat upgrade" SWG made "for the better" they ended up giving themselves just another unfinished product to work on. The mission "Lets give the community what we think everyone wants to see" was accomplished.
Lets give everyone what we think they want. Listen, a game is made up of many things, but it all starts with one single thing, and that is a core mechanic. The core mechanic was lock on targeting. Then on a whim, they changed a basic, integral, core mechanic. I don't understand how anyone in their right minds would think that changing a combat style frivolently without testing it would be considered a good idea.
Everyone who played the CU just wanted them to STOP adding things, and fix what was made, and then add content to it. Instead they said "Lets change everything." And thus the cycle began again. Now they slowly start listening to players, and low and behold a majority of the players decide that they want some of the old system back. Well what now? Ignore them? In the meantime you lose the new fanbase who never had any idea what the old system was like, and I understand not wanted to change. Veterans didn't want to change, we had no choice. Now the new players are getting a change and they don't have a choice. The only thing SOE will NOT do is admit they made a mistake. Nomatter who they lose, they won't admit that it's wrong and they won't roll it back.
If this game did not have the Star Wars name on it, and if it did not have Star Wars characters, ships, and other important Star Wars-esque things in it, it would be utterly worthless and scrapped before each update could be made. SOE will keep changing this game until they find out what the players want. I just can't wait for the day that players realize that what they want is to NOT PLAY THIS GAME.

I completely agree with your sentiment here. I disagree as to SOE not admitting it's mistake. Devs were quoted last year at a conference confessing that they'd taken a chance with SWG and screwed it up royally. The quote I remember was "the community you launch with is the one you have" - clearly realizing the NGE was the steaming pile of crap, though belatedly. SOE has attempted to phase this game back to a CU type experience by makling Smuggler expertise similar to the old TK prof, restoring a version of Creature Handler and drastically raising the PvE difficulty level.
As always, though, they've screwed up all those efforts as well. SOE will keep the servers running with the barest of "fixes" until their license agreement is up and someone else (Bioware most likely) is ready to take another crack at a SW MMO. Hopefully other companies will learn from SOE's fiasco as well and we'll never see another complete cluster like the NGE again.
Agree with most part, but afcourse do not agree with saying SOE has not given in to their mistake as they did. As we all have read htis numerous time, just use Mr Google to find out. Here i feel you are dead wrong, Its the IP which has given us the expectation we had, would this has been a other game with no big brand attached to it it would have been accepted much better, futher more the game would not have to try and become as some state "more star warsy" So really its the IP that made all the change the way it changed all these times. I'm not saying the game would have been good then, just saying the IP has more power to it then people seem to realize.

I do hope Bioware is making a good MMORPG, but also hope it will not be a SWG, as bioware is known for its orginality, but then again people been screaming for a Bioware SWG since 2005 shortly after NGE we already spotted numerous topics of people saying Bioware is working on a new Star Wars MMO, so this rumor will continue till Bioware lets it public know what their "Secret project" is for reall. Lets just all hope that regardless what type of IP or whatever name they put on it, that it will be good
Im an ex-SWG player, had a pre-CU jedi and plyed it untill NGE came live than i canceled 2 accounts. Recently i have bought station access because im playing EQ2 and wanted to take a look again and see how SWG is ging and maybe meet some old friends again. I was happy i could find some friends still playing, see my old town, meet some guild mates, that was very cool but that was all the fun. Unfortunately, at least for me, its impossible to play such a crap. I really hate NGE and what the game has become after it. Besides, servers are still quite empty, places that used to be very populated are all empty. I used to love this game and really anted to play again but ... no way with NGE. Gonna still pay for station access for a while so i can play a bit of SoH too but not really worth it.
at least you gave it another shot... it definitely has changed but there are ways to adapt. First and foremost, the servers are not dead (not if you on a populated server). The cetners of population have just changed from what they were. Try Restuss & Mos Eisley.
Make sure you change your controls to mirrot pre-NGE... fire specials from teh keyboard. I can understand how ANYONE would hate the game if they didnt reset the controls
Honestly, if the first thing I have to do in a game is change the controls around, that doesn't say much about the makers of the game. A more intuitive setup should be a priority as that is the first thing all of their customers must deal with in the game. After two years, if the control setup of a game still has even supporters of the game telling people to change the defaults, then that means the developers have the order of their priorities messed up.

It sounds like a few of the current players feel the game is finally ready for launch or relaunch or whatever it would be on the 4th attempt.
you're either confused or... not that smart. The NGE is not gone (and never will go away), if it was than people wouldn't be gone. I don't blame them for not trying anymore cause.. (and its been said countless times) SWG is nothin but a shadow of what once was a great and ambitious project. The only reason i see for you to 'like it a lot' is cause you lowered your expectations somehow. I dont blame you for that either cause thats the only way you can keep on playing this with 'fun'...
Why do I make WoW comparisons?
Once a denizen of Ahazi

Spoken like someone that hasn't played the game in a while because the game is far from the NGE now and yes the players are returning too. Have fun twinkling those fairies

for me this right here is one of the reasons that Star Wars is a great movie and one of the reasons to me that made SWG a great game. yes it was not perfect but dam once you took a minute to see what depth and fun this game was it was no way you good not tell me that this was not something special.i would guess most vets here have tried this game once or twice over this past year, SOE has given out a free vet trial every time they release a chapter, i think we played enough to know if its good or not.

Simple proof and FACT to show how confused some disgrunted VETS are is just by looking at the SWG topic Star Wars Galaxies: Editorial: Audience Alienation (1 2 3 4 5 ...
Thats a tough question, I can appreciate a lot of games for a lot of different reasons. Why? As you can see from my sig, I can just as easily enjoy an RPG, RTS or Shooter. I don't think I have a "single favorite". I tend to either like a game or don't and put it down.

Just pick any of the 4 in my sig for whatever illustration you are going to do. Based on your post history I can pretty much guess what you are going to do next...maybe I'm wrong /shrug go for it
Ok, this has all the makings of a long post.
If they keep the CUNGE method of development, well, instead of just Kauri, it very well might be RIP - SWG.
its pretty hard to define comeback for this game.
1. its a completely different game
2. times have changed...dramatically (lots and lots more MMO's)
3. star wars is in hibernation mode because of the movies.
this game will never reach the level that pre NGE was at or any other MMO in the market. it will get more subscribers...and lose some, its the natural cycle of an MMO.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Lets just all hope that regardless what type of IP or whatever name they put on it, that it will be good
Make sure you change your controls to mirrot pre-NGE... fire specials from teh keyboard. I can understand how ANYONE would hate the game if they didnt reset the controls
Honestly, if the first thing I have to do in a game is change the controls around, that doesn't say much about the makers of the game. A more intuitive setup should be a priority as that is the first thing all of their customers must deal with in the game. After two years, if the control setup of a game still has even supporters of the game telling people to change the defaults, then that means the developers have the order of their priorities messed up.
ok, being a SWG vet, I just had to click on this post to see what it was about...then I see its a gazzillion post long.
So to the OP I just have one word for you.....
NO
exactly, SWG is dead - will remain dead - and can never be reborn.
Unless by some miracle a STAR WARS ONLINE releases , which is better than the old SWG even. Yay (dreams more)
Played almost everything...
Currently playing nothing...
Waiting for: Darkfall, WAR, Guild Wars 2.
