The funeral of AC

KrimsonKrimson Member Posts: 36

I played this game from day 1, and In my opinion it was, in the glory days the best game out there.  The graphics were great back in teh day and hte game play was unrivaled.  Turbine needs to shoot it in the head now.  THey have killed the game, it is so horrible now with all the "content revisions" that were to enable better gameplay just destroyed it.  I just wanted to say I loved AC and I will miss it greatly.

This is the beginning of my past. This is the end of my journey.

Wish to elaborate or just leave us wondering why it has turned for the worse all of the sudden?

Well its only in my opinion, and some agree with me and some dont.  AC has now become much too easy.  The game was a joy in its early days when my ax friend and I had to struggle to take on a mud golem, and it took 14 people to defend the spawn at fort mossie.  Now its get with 4 people level 50000 and slaughter every mob in teh game just because we can.  The rest I leave for you to assume...

About the same here. Price Increase all the nerfing etc... And the Monthly updates have been Terrible IMO. Sure the Burun are invadeing? umm Where? Not like the Old day's where Shadow or Virindi Tower's would Lay waste to towns and Challenge ppl. No updates realy, they are just nerfs and small prize's anyone can get...

Going to bide my time till the New Xpansion and all the nerf's etc have settled down. Yeah I know they'll prob start nerfing new stuff from xpan soon as it comes out haha.

If you want the same old tedious XP grind then go play everquest...  I played AC a month out of beta, while I do agree that every noob out there running around sporting AC 200+ armor and buffed with VIIs basically removes the need for any low lvl content and ruins the bruised egos of those of us (well you) who had to do it the old fashioned way, doesn't mean AC is dead.  With such low server counts in conparision to the "old days" what was turbine supposed to do?  With lowered numbers of players and that number consisting, almost entirly, of 50+ even 100+ lvl toons, all the noobs have ohhh just a bit of catching up to do before they can play with the big boys... image And because the severs are comprised almost entirely of small allegience groups you would be hard pressed to find 14 people of your lvl to defend the mossy fortress because A: they are part of an allegience doing other things and B: they're all to high lvl to make it worth their while... Unfortunatly (at least in your opinion) this lead turbine to make the game easier for noobs which are mostly just reroles of higher lvl chars to grow up.

Sooo maybe it is too easy... Before you get out the old unregistered shot gun from the back seat of your pickup and take aim, how about you and ur friends just not take advatage of the prevalent twinking going around.  I'm going to the new server for just that reason.

I believe you are not allowed to list e-bay sales

Thats the best part of newbie PvP is the roaming around the Academy in small groups taking out solo players and other small groups.

While I don't play AC at the moment I would definitely consider coming back to AC if they came out with a new expansion. So far no other game i've played has had quite as enjoyable social system as that with Vassals and Patrons. Turbine is showing effort to restore this game, so I might show some effort to try it again.

So because everyone is a higher lvl than they were, in the beginning, the game is too easy? Can't you say that about all other MMORPG's? At least Turbine tried to help things by changing the spawns around the land, to be more challenging, these days.

Just a note too, don't confuse tedium with difficulty. Too many people do that. People say it's too easy that you can just buy scrolls now and Turbine took the difficulty out of it. No, they took the tedium out of standing a mana pool and spamming the same spell over and over till you learned it. That wasn't difficult, that was time consuming. Same with what they just introduced this month in being able to bane everything you are wearing, all at once, in one shot. That just removes the tedium of having to do every piece separate.

My only beef with AC has always been that the devs seem to always want to disperse people out of the towns. They blew up Arwic, changed the resell rates in Ayan, added the market place and housing, all in a effort to disperse people. It's an MMORPG, people are meant to gather. That's why I went back for the new sserver. At least, in the short term, people are in the towns again.

I too have played AC. In fact, it was my first "real" modern MMORPG I ever played. (I first played Runescape, but it is a free, older, Javascript based, MMORPG. For a free game it's nice, but its not as modern as AC.)

AC is still a money maker. Ask yourself this: If you personally could make 500,000 thousand to 1 million bucks a year for very, very, little work aka for almost free would you do it? As long as AC is still a money maker, it will stay around.

Could AC still get better? Yes. Heck, even EQ, AC's rival which is technically a few months YOUNGER than AC, is still a money maker, and has been updated enough to still be fun to play at present time. How about you post some ideas you have on how AC could be made even better?

    NOTE:

Turbine has in the past 2 years had a turbulant history. With MicroCrap.... errr... MicroSoft messing Turbine up, then selling Turbine back to itself. Right now Turbine NEEDS AC because it is the only thing keeping Turbine afloat. AC2 is a dead, failed, game. AC has roughly 50,000 accounts. AC2 has roughly 6,000 accounts. You read that right LOL!

I agree with the first post, Asheron´s Call has past their prime and I stopped playing about 3 months ago.  Now playing Eve Online and loving it.

I agree somewhat and think that buff bots have wreacked the games somewhat, BUT if you want that new feeling of not being able to do anything, then go and start a toon on the Verdantine server.  It is brand new and there are many people starting new characters.  There are also many people that already have lvl 5 casting buff bots, but dont use them.  I am lvl 6 now, been playing a few days been trying to get my strength bracelet from a newb quest.  I tried to kill a lvl 9 golem and was killed after he war'ed me once.  So, I am a complete gimp and its great!

DAoC is the new AC.  AC has already had its "Prime Time" as the best MMORPG.  I think its time to move on to bigger and better things.  BYE BYE AC you will be missed.

I have played AC since Nov 99. It was my first MMORPG. I still play it and I have two active accounts.

I probably spend about 2-5 hrs a week on it but I am really looking forward to the expansion pack that will have updated graphics.

Overall Turbine has done a great job with the game and the expansion packs.

My biggest gripe is the fact that they can't seem to fix the lag on DT.

AC was my first MMORPG also, I played it four years now. I loved it, but I am going to agree with it dying out. This week I unsubscribed for the first time ever, both accounts.

It may take a bit, but slowly it is happening.

People complained it was MS causing all the havoc, I am amazed people forget that it was a partnership between both companies and the blame cannot lay with just the one. In a partnership, details are made as to who does/handles what. IF MS had too much control, then that was Turbine's fault for accepting that in the first place.

I had high hopes of seeing major improvements when Turbine took over. And even though things are changing, along with it , some bad things are occuring to (my own opinion of course)

For years, as many know, it was macro and 3rd party applications heaven for anyone that wanted to do it.

Now, what is happening with these changes in wanting to control and/or ban them, the innocent will be taken along with it.

I for one, do not want to play a game where I have to worry more about whether I am following a CoC that changes almost daily on Turbines forums BUT not making the changes on the CoC itself where people are suppose to go for rules of the game.

When you have to worry more about a games rules then playing, for me it is time to go :)

As for the new server, within 18 days there was already a maxed character, now already there are two others. We are talking less than a month for the server to be open.

They want to crack down on the UCM's (unattended combat macro's) but as you can see, it is still there.

I myself, have recently logged on to Ryzom. Free weekend and giving it a whirl. A bit more unfamiliar with its systems, I am having a good time with it :)

Their pages say, updates, patches, 5 chars, live developers.. so reminds me of my first love. Going to give it an honest shot. Might be my newest MMORPG love!

I've been playing AC for almost two months now and am LOVING it!

However, I can see why people would think the death of AC is near. When I first started, there were at least 500-600 people logged into Wintersebb, but after the new server opened that number dropped down to 300-400.

Part of the reason that people play MMorpg's is because they want to meet and interact with other people. If there is no-one to meet and play with, then new users will go where there are people to play with.

I'm in a very cool Allegiance, so do not have that problem, but I hope the expansion pack breaths new life into the game!

I have read so many posts from people claiming the game they loved in the first days have been ruined that I tend to ignore this.

It is human psychology that at some stage you get bored with something. Then you have the nice memories of the time you were not yet bored. You glorify first days of your game play and see the current game negatively. In fact it is just your own personal experience. For a new player the game of today might be as new and exciting as the game was for you on your first day years ago.

I think the game still has a lot to offer.  If you leave the game for a couple of months then you will have whole new quests to learn or different mobs to fight.  It is pretty amazing how the game has evolved over the last several years.  I enjoy playing and pulling loot from the chests or monsters.  I love having a chance to score a major.

Well ive never seen 4 people take on a monster like that...takes like 10 people alone to kill the olthoi queen, about 5 healers, 1 guy with huge ass melee def, and 4 archers.....imo ac is the best game out there, im not going back, to many new games that are gonna be outragious coming out, guildwars, everquest 2, wow, the matrix online.....the list goes on and on, also by the time thos games are out better ones will be going to work....

It's still a great game with tons of quests to do.  I'm playing on Verdantine atm.

I wish AC2 had been a real sequel, AC with lots of improvements and fixes.

I wish they would have done away with vassal passup for the new server.  That and the lag are the only things I don't like about the game.  It's helping me pass the time until I get into WoW beta.

I agree that AC was great back in the day, but it is well passed its hay day now.  Way too many exploits and macro's and decal plugins have ruined it for me.

  • el_Slackoel_Slacko Member Posts: 310
Btw, the ONLY reason they blew up Arwic was because it was becomming so crowded that the server was having trouble handeling it and they needed people to go somewhere else and not JUST arwic.

moneymaker? 500k to 1 million a year?  Guys are making 10 MMD's an hour if you're not, you read the wrong forums.

Killing the Olthoi Queen?  I have a pic of one guy tanking it.

The Glory Days?  Yah, it took 10 guys to kill a mud golem, but they were all lvl 1-5.

Whats killing the game is the bots.  Not just the buff bots, but the portal bots, the trade bots, the tinker bots, and the food/item making bots.  When peeps no longer play the game, then it loses a lot.  So if you have 50,000  accounts, but only 5000 are actually played at any given time, that makes a dead game.

Another thing that helped to kill the game, was Decal.  Hell, I love some of the utilities, but give me a break.  Without those utilities, we actually had to search for stuff, had to figure out how to do the quests ahead of time, and not "in-game".  Don't forget the autoheal utilities or the perimiter alert for looting.  Remember when [ and ] were your ways of finding good loot or your corpse?

Decal made everything easier, including macroing, loot finding, and killing.

Alright, I have to admit, the grafix are now well behind the times.  But if the gameplay were there, everybody would play again.  But still peeps don't play, they... "bot" instead.

  •   AC has between 50,000 to 100,000 players. It is one of the very few MMORPGs that has fulfilled the industry standard for a MMORPG living a full life of 5 years. AC will never die even if the number of players shrinks down to 20,000. Right now it has long ago re-couped all investment money. It has been turning a true profit.

EQ cost 5 million to make. It has grossed between 100 million to 400 million. AC has cost roughly 5 million to make. Though it is not a runaway success like EQ, it still IS a success. A conservative estimate of its gross profit is 25 million to 100 million. Still incredible for a 5 million investment!

There is THREE things that might kill off AC......

      1. The failure AC2 - as Turbine uses up the profits from AC to support the dead horse AC2.

      2. The soon to be vaporware/failure DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online). The Fantasy-Themed market is already super-saturated. Plus EQ and EQ2 already are unofficially D&D Online as well as Lord of the Rings Online LOLOL!

      3. The soon to be vaporware/failure MEO (MIddle EArth Online). Same reasons as #2. PLUS the silly fact Turbine is attempting to make 2 MMORPGs at the same time.... and BOTH will be compeating vs each other, as well as vs the tons of competition out there! This on the heels of AC2 which has shown it failed vs the competition against.... OLD MMORPGs even though it is a brand new MMORPG.

From a buisness standpoint, in terms of pulling in a profit, AC is not in danger of dying anytime soon.

Where did you get your numbers?  Not that I doubt you, I'd just like to see for myself.

I agree that AC2 was crap when it was released, but recent additions have made it look very good (Crafting 2.0 and the removal of Buff Bots by changing buffs to 'aura' spells).  AC1 may as well be called the 'Buff Bot Junkie Game', everyones gotta have their fix.  This has made the game way to easy and killed the enjoyment for me and many others.

Turbine is licensed to make 2 upcoming MMORPGs that should become some of the most highly anticipated games of all time, considering what they're based on (Middle-Earth Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online).  I think they're headed in the right direction and don't see them drowning any time soon.

The funeral of AC? Asheron's Call was the first mmorpg I have ever played (back in 99) so maybe that skew's my view.

I will agree that AC is definatly past its prime. But its like I always say, a T-bone steak that has been reheated in the microwave a week later is still a T-bone steak. However it pains me to say that there are a few games that are overcoming this senior citizen of a game, namely City of Heroes, or Lineage 2 and Turbines ventures look promising. Yes, AC is old and the graphics ARE outdated. Which is why I don't understand the crap that is saturating the market. UO? Tibia? Runescape? PT? Biosfear? Thesa? the list could go on and on. Its sad when games in development aren't better than games that are fading.

There isn't and never will be a funeral for AC. Its more of an EXTREMELY slow poisoning that will last many years before completely stopping the heart of this legend. And who is to blame for this poison? You can point the fingers at the Turbine, I mean that would seem the obvious choice. But look closer and you'll find that the players have done it to themselves. Bots have takin the thrill and adrenalin rush out of this game. But even with the thrill, adrenalin rush, and the sense of acomplishment gone, AC is still better than 95% of the other games out there.

PS: If you want the thrill just don't use bots, its as simple as that. I have gone through the thrill, had the adrenalin rush, and felt the sense of acomplishment many times, which is why I choose to use bots to get through the lower levels which aren't as fun if you have done them 100's of times.
