For those that think it's Vaporware........

BrenelaelBrenelael Member UncommonPosts: 3,821

Read this. This was written back in April as far as I can tell and as the author of the article states,"Hey, at least now we know the game actually exists...". This may be old news and if it is I'm sorry. Just that all the talk about Darkfall being 'vaporware' is apparently very misguided.

Well I did a search and came up with nothing before I posted but as I said I had a feeling it was old news. That being said it is still relevant information with all the claims of 'vaporware' that permeate this forum. Just the fact that there was actually something for this hacker to steal and get charged with proves that it's not vaporware.

As much as I like the sound of all Darkfall's features and all, I dont take this as definitive proof that there is a working version of the game in existence.

    Doesn't mean it isn't vaporware.
I think you mean 'Duke Nukem Forever' because I played 'Duke Nukem 2' and it was a very good game. As for Darkfall not being vaporware if there is any build of the game that is playable it's not vaporware. That title, in my opinion, belongs to games that never have any working build at all. Whether or not Darkfall sees the light of day with all the features in tact remains to be seen. I have my doubts about ALL the features being in the finished product myself but I remain hopeful. I do however think we will see this game in some form hit a beta test soon but only time will tell.

I doubt it is vaporware. There are arguments for both sides but we honestly just have to wait and see.

They've had a playable demo on a server that they've shown to publishers. Theres an old alpha video showing pvp through a player's view. There are people playing the game such as the forum adminstrator of DF forums(he isnt an aventurine employee).

That definition is so vague that any game could fall under that category(Aoc, War, ect).

I guess thats not Vaporware either?

Until members of the public are in beta, whether I see videos or not, there is no game imo. The developers family members and people on the payroll hardly count as a public beta.

I do not feel that Darkfall is vaporware using the definition that the game basically does not exist in any form - I think it is being actively developed. I do feel, however, that people are going to be disappointed if they believe in this game and what it claims it will deliver.

Forget about beta, have they ever even let people (like press) play a demo? Even something simple, like swinging a sword, killing an enemy, and calling it a day? As far as I know, no. This is a major problem when it comes to people taking your product seriously.

The developer has massive plans, and they sure do sound grand, but there has been no proof that any of this exists, at all. Some screenshots and short movies are something, but not enough to constitute proof, especially after such a long development cycle. The developer also has never released anything previously, and certainly not an MMOG, and even more certainly not a AAA MMORPG. This is a cause for concern - people expect them to succeed on a grand scale with absolutely no proven track record.

After 6+ years of development they have shown nothing that indicates they have finished even 1/100 of what the game is supposed to be. Naval battles, totally free PvP, epic warfare...that is a lot to promise when you cannot even show something basic.

Anyway, I am glad this game is exciting people, and I genuinely do hope it delivers everything it claims and is a smashing success - it sounds like a game I'd enjoy. However, I doubt this will happen and must marvel at the people who firmly believe it will. There is a fine line between faith and being hopelessly gullible, and I think the hardcore Darkfall believers fall into the latter category.

Then again, I suppose we all want something to believe in, and after so many MMORPG disappointments, grasping at an impossible dream might make sense. Unfortunately, I think this will end in a nightmarish flop, if it even comes to market at all, something I doubt considering no publisher is yet secured.

Doesn't prove anything. What do they have to gain? Ongoing support in their forums, etc. Could give them a show of force to a potential publisher or money lender to keep them going. I.E. showing how much community support and potential money gain is out there for their product.

Honestly, I hope the game does come out, and I hope it has even half of what they promised.

Until you have proof of this loan, which don't forget could be a scam, this game should be considered vaporware.  How many years has is been in development?  No one has played it, and probably no one ever will.  I wish this game would be released.   I couldn't sleep when I heard about it, it sounded awesome.  Two years later, barely any real updates, I see this game being the same as Shadowbane.

I'm not a fanboy, I'm not a "hater"  I just look at the facts, and the only standing facts are:

Game hasn't had any real public updates in some time.

Game hasn't moved in development in YEARS.

    No beta forthcoming.

This should be enough proof in any rational persons mind to consider this game, "postponed indefinitely", aka, "shelved" aka "vaporware".

I really wished this game would be released, there's just NO evidence it really will be.

With the latest news to be uncovered, it appears Aventurine has procured a 20 million Euro convertible bond ($27.5m USD) loan with Marfin Bank[27] at the behest of Proton Investment Bank of Greece[28]. Now I'm not expert in MMORPG development and distribution, and I wouldn't pretend to be, but when last ditch desperation investments from big name has-beens like Interplay, throwing every shred of their capability into one Last Hurrah that is Fallout Online, confidently dedicate what is assumed to be an overkill amount of $75m USD to the pre-production, development, and publishing of a software[29] I can't help but think that no more than $25m of that would be dedicated to initial server hosting and publishing. Without much enthusiasm or presumption, I would submit that the wait for Darkfall is over. $27.5m loans tend to be a bitch to pay off interest on, especially when sitting squarely on your laurels. The clamps are most certainly down, and Aventurine is financially committed to the launch of Darkfall whether they like it or not. Whether that's a good thing or not is also yet to be seen, because for the first time in its long development Darkfall Online is subject to the most dreaded of all development problems: time constraints.
