It must happen. Only if we let it die, the lesson is learned.
I had my entries and breaks, but now, after server merge, I came back a third time. VG has it qualities, no doubt. But all in all its cumbersome, difficult, deadly and dull. I still spent about 60% of my time SEEKING things instead of having fun, I still die waaay too fast and often compared to medium difficulty games like EQ2 ( NO I DONT PLAY WOW!) and still its difficult to find a group (not because of lack of players, but those who are in only group with friends) asf. Really, VG has qualities, but altogether its so unbelievable cumbersome, EACH damn time I feel, hey lets resub and see how VG has evolved after some time I feel intolerable levels for frustration. When I was stuck in some damn curtain of doom today (aka bug) and died because of the uber fast repop I just decided this was my thrid and last try.
VG deserves to die. Its a lesson devs must learn, the painful way, as I learned in this thrice damned excuse for a game. ><
You may write athousand times I am stupid, whatever. I think I am as good or as bad as most players, and years of MMO experience have shown ME, what I am capable of, which is all I need to know. The unwelcoming nature of the game is just too much.

VG is dead. Didn't you get the memo?
If you are trying to teach developers something, they will miss the lesson. They will see a game die and assume MMO's aren't as foolproof a business model as they thought.
the end result will be less choice. Sorry about your experiences. I've done it twice myself.

Maybe you're right. I was just so angry again. It was such a good potential, and its all WASTED because of the detail. For instance, why cant there be a simple con system which you dont have to select mobs to see their con, relative to you, as in EQ2? But NOOO I have to click through ALL of them all the time, and when I forget, BLAM I am dead! Its all those "small" details which altogether pi.. me off EVERY damn time I am stupid enough to give it a try. I guess it makes me so mad, because I see the great potential SO WASTED. If it only were crap like Archlord I would not care... but the missed chance... it just makes me mad and sad beyond words.
So essentially, I feel like the betrayed lover, who was cheated.

A lot of people feel this way, I being one of them at one time. There were a ton of us who were watching and waiting and looking forward to this game, but it just didn't happen, it was completely dissapointing. Luckily I was in beta so I saw all this myself before I paid for the game, but don't think you're alone with these feelings.
"God, please help us sinful children of Ivalice.."
How many times needed EQ2 to become a good game? 3 or 4 years i think. Give VG at least 2 years (not 3 or 4 months) and come back then. It's what i plan on doing. And no, I will not let it die cose i spent a good amount of money on it, (the game and 2 or 3 months) and i plan on having fun on it when it turns a good game.
Vanguard is not dead.
I think if you try to play it like wow or something similar where you're basically just trying to reach max level, then yes, i can see people getting frustrated with it. I for the first time am trying to kinda role play a bit (if only in my own head) and enjoy exploring stuff. I'm even avoiding using the web to look up quest info and such and am tyring to enjoy the disovery process of what's in the game (instead of looking everything up and knowing ahead of time what's around the bend.) I'm definetely gimped by not knowing where to go, or what the best armor is for my my level and class, but just looking everything up on the web and plowing through the content gets you to where you're going without really enjoying the journey.
While i'm rambling... you know what i would lke to see... setting up "Camps" like you could when SWG first came out (not sure if you still can). VAnguard is so big, it would be cool to be out exploring at night and come along a temporary campsite that someone has set up with a fire, Tents, cots, repair stations... where hanging out at campsite rejuvenates you. Especially if there's a bard or two entertaining... and some crafter cooking up a pig over the fire.... (i think if you run around in the rain in mmo's you should be risking getting sick) Spending a few hours at well equiped campsite should provide some moderate buffs.
There's a place for games like WOW... i think Vanguard is trying to be something different.
Just my 2 cents, but Vanguard is growing again.
blah blah blah
I was thinking of giving vanguard a try because I really enjoyed playing EQ back in the day, Your post makes it sound a whole lot like EQ so I may give it a try. It being difficult, and hard compaired to medium games like eq 2, I remember playing EQ when EQ2 came out and most of the Eq players thought that EQ2 was just way too easy. I remember it being hard to solo anything at the high levs in EQ even with a ton of buffs but the challenge was actually fun to me. I dont play EQ anymore because the graphics and all are too dated for me but vanguard does sound a lot like EQ.
I have been playing vanguard since its release... I have enjoyed it greatly. I am by no means a game specialist. the comments made here are my opinion and only my opinion. I hope you enjoy.
Graffix- are fairly clean and enjoyable.. as with others of this type it has helped step up the competition in this area... thank you Vanguard.
Sound- enjoyable mellow tune keeps you going and does not distract from the overall sound effects that are throughout the entire game.... well done...
AI- sneaking is very smooth... you can get right up on enemies for unexpected attacks.. the agro is clean, I have been very satisfied by this.. other games out there and in development need to take a lesson from this. when the enemies are on to you they will follow for quite awhile for me this was exciting. If you scare a enemy in a tight area all there buddies will show up also.
Learning curve- moderate.... could use alittle more straight forward training but all and all not as bad as others I have encounted... I compair to the likes of guild wars that is very smooth and when the main adventure begins you are as prepaired as you can be. so some improvement is possible but it does well as it stands.
character- #1. the level up in the begining is good but around lev 30 and up it becomes a slow grind. at lev 40 and up it makes the game difficult to stick with... games need to be fun not boring due to character development... this is my most negitive view of the game.
character- #2. the variety of adjustments that you can make to your character to personalize is simply wonderful. I have had agreat deal of fun makeing many adjustments to the characteristics..
Items- the grind for drops can get fairly annoying.
missions- #1. many missions have long distances to travel. one mission took 30 min to get to the destination, OUCH. with limited game play time this makes enjoyment difficult.
missions- #2. when you get to lev 40 the missions become sparse... good luck finding them
Results- This is a solid fun game to get into but a hard one in the later levs to stick with... Some big improvements are possible. over all it is well worth a try and my understanding is to date there are areas still undiscovered by players. there are continents, sky lands, dungeons and under water citys...
Its not "difficult" at all. There is nothing at all "difficult" or "challenging" about the combat. You attack and manage specials. A house plant could do it.
Its a big fat, "kill 10 rats" GRIND.
If your idea of difficulty is being able to solo mobs, then its maybe average depending on the class you take I guess.
Frankly the most difficult and challenging thing about the entire game is getting it to run decent on your PC.
I'm sure the dev. in VG are doing their best. Just give them some more time to settle things up. it would be a shame if a good prodject like VG should just crash down....
..............
Sorry for you bad experiences
my kill to death ratios:
25 DK --- 113
15 Ranger --- 131
15 Druid --- 61
38 Ranger (Main) ---- 58
14 Cleric ---- 142
18 Rogue--- 45
12 Sorcerer --- 32
the numbers above for those that don't know is number of kill made verses number of times died: example 131vs1
It is a fact you die... it is a fact you travel. If you can't handle it this game is not for you as the OP has pointed out. I will miss his comments on these forums since he will not need to comment here any further since he has left the game.
A MMO is like life. It is something to cherish and enjoy upon in it journey. So why race to the end of it. In life at the end you die.
Sorry to break your balls but its not dead man. Its still alive and raw with a good amount of people to play with. You probabaly think im a fanboy well nope. I dont play but have. The game itself is pretty good but a few bugs that can be fix. In due time you will see VG SOH rise like other games have. It juts needs more time than expected to be.

Too many ppl solo in VG, so no its not as old EQ was, that account.

Actually from where it is there is no reason SoE should not actually make Vanguard into a really good game.
Things they desperately need to do to save Vanguard, in my view:
1. In-game GM presence responding vocally to gold sellers. I doubt they can code anything soon to help cut down on gold spamming, but having someone in-game asking for reports and advising that action has been taken (and they do need to ban gold seller accounts) would restore player confidence that SoE are serious about gold selling, and reinforce the message to gold buyers that they breach the EULA at their peril. Sigil did it, and it works - whether it stops gold sellers honestly who cares, it instills player confidence.
2. Fix the crash to desktop bugs. Seriously, their coding / testing is junk - in fixing one crash last update, they created more crash to restart / crash to desktop issues for a lot of players. I cannot remember a game where I manage to crash between the credits and the character select screen. But that is happening now, since the last patch, on top of increased CTD in towns. Any area with a decent player population is a sitting duck for crash to desktop - the silly thing is that if they just asked players to not maintain irrelevant spells in the city (etc) until they have a fix their servers would probably have a better chance. Looking at where some of the chunk lines are wouldn't hurt either, but won't happen any time soon.
3. Communication. Trying to find information on their main website is painful, which is really not helpful, particularly given that this complex game simply does not have enough quality in the mission descriptions / waypoints to explain itself to a new player. It's the little things, for example that there is a crafting chat channel with people who will help you if you ask, but new players do not know /join craft typically until they are horribly lost and confused. Then again, this is SoE, so junk communication is par for the course for them.
It's dead Jim! Well, not yet, but if they do not sort things out by the time the next shiny fantasy MMO comes out, it will be.

lol?
Why are you attacking the guy personally for posting his opinion? So he checks in on the game every once in awhile and leaves his impressions. Don't read them if it bothers you. This is the point of a forum. Although I sometimes do not agree with what he writes, he generally makes some excellent point and his post are well writen and thought out.
Pick apart what he wrote but veiled insults are just uncalled for.
I think that is the idea there. It's not a bad game. It's not good as EQ2 is, but i can see it become as good if not better in it's own way.

I'd say Vanguard is alright...
If they just could sort those darn bugs

dude i felt like u did, never had a game get me so frustrated tot he point i was getting mad. death losing half my level twice, bugs, traveling my ar$e off for over a half hour to get to the quest area. chunking for a sec or 2 despite having a 8800 and a dual core cpu 2 raptor SATA Hd's and 2GB of high end Corsair DDR2 ram. the game needs to die. let it rest in pieces. i was a bit lucky as I got a nice free month from a phone call trying to transfer over my free 3 months of eq2 to my vanguard (before i realize how VG didnt change one bit almost) so i dindt have to waste $15 to realize this game was truly mind blowingly dead (people playing just dont know it yet).not much as changed from the beta.
and I agree we need to teach companies they cant release crap. we need to speak with our money. and show them we wont tolerate this.
3.4ghz Phenom II X4 965, 8GB PC12800 DDR3 GSKILL, EVGA 560GTX 2GB OC, 640GB HD SATA II, BFG 1000WATT PSU. MSI NF980-G65 TRI-SLI MOBO.
I fully understand if people don't like the game. Everyone has different tastes so to each their own.
However, the game is far from dead. It's just such a huge world that it's easy to play for awhile without ever seeing another player. Most channels are turned off by default so unless you turn those channels on you won't see any text from other players. If you want to see how active the community actually is, turn on regionsay. The text will scroll by so fast you won't be able to keep up with most of it usually.
As far as getting groups, don't just rely on the /LFG tag. Start your own group and use the LFG tool to fill it with other players who are also LFG.
You can not kill that which has no life.
Vanguard isn't dead. Yet. But it's not exactly setting the world on fire either.
And VG also has two big strikes working against it-- the poor launch they had, and time. They've already got a dodgy reputation because of the wankery and drama of their launch, the server merges, Sigil's implosion, Brad McQuaid's overhype of the game in comparison to what they actually delivered, and performance issues that still seem to plague many of the folks that still play this game. And they can't afford to let any of that endure for much longer. They've really got to get things together, and they have to bend over backwards to satisfy the folks they've got playing now, because those are the hardest of the hardcore faithful who've stuck with this game out of loyalty and through all of the nonsense that has plagued it so far.
Sure, they've fixed some things. And the server merges have given the illusion of more players in Vanguard by consolidating the playerbase, but they've still got a long, long way to go before the game will be up to par.
EQ2, which I'm currently playing, had the luxury of the EverQuest name and lore to keep it afloat despite its tepid launch, allowing the game to become the much stronger, much better MMO it is now. Vanguard doesn't have that same luxury. That means they can't afford to sit back and coast along.
I wish them luck at resurrecting this game. VG's going to need it.
Give the man a hand *clap clap* What took you so long ?

I couldn't agree more.
There's still a ton of things the devs need to fix to get VG up to par. Yet for all it's flaws, I still find a lot of fun in the game. I hope SOE can turn it into the game that a lot of people were hoping it would be.
