It will be close between WAR and AOC, but neither will have an excellent launch. Most players, that currently doubt their stay in WoW, will once more be tempted to try out the expansion and they will be occupied with it for at least another 3 months. Sorry to say it, but it's likely that a large part of the expected community for both games, will eventually come from WoW, because WoW basically fucks up on both PvE and PvP.
As for the balance between AoC and WAR. I'm definitely in the WAR camp. First of all, because of the very shady information that's being spread around the globe by AoC, in contrast to WARs extremely transparent intel-flow. I simply tend to trust people with more information over those that release videos of a siege with 50 bots. I also don't like playing humans in their fancy glorious SPARTA MALE type of style, where the eye says the proportions are right, but in truth, their proportions stink.
WAR has the best of one side of the fence ( Fantasy over realism, autoattack taken from a long series of games prior to WoW and a very decent gameplay )
AoC has the best of the other side of the fence ( Realism over fantasy, aiming to hit ,which is basically refreshing enough to build a game around it )
TCoS is sitting on top of the fence, but people won't find out about it, untill they've seen that the grass isn't green on either side of that fence and that the view on top is alot better. ( Realism = fantasy ( artwise Soulreaver I style), aiming to hit, excellent character customization, great lore, thrilling combat, skill(deck) decides the winner )
I used to be completely hyped about WAR, but slowly, if they do what they promise, TCoS is taking over.
It is interesting to see what fanboi bashes what game, but apart from that I do not understand the choice given in this poll. Is PotBS not interesting? Is Aion not to be released in 2008?
Only game i'm really hyped about is the one coming from 38 studios, why? it's coming from people who love to play games.
Never heard of that..
And then i did some research, nothing yet on a title, but those names like Salvatore, McFarlane and Kirchoff (wizzies of the coast) just wet my appatite.
It could very well be the game i play after TCoS (MMO's keep me occupied for aproximately 3 years)
Thank you Toughguy (Is this you curt/Ngruk ?)

i think i will most likely play WAR. honestly i dont like AoC cause it looks like an over glorified age of empires. which was a good game but got real boring real fast.TCoSB looks good i might try that out but im most looking forward to WAR and AION
Everyone who is looking at AOC, is most likely looking at WAR as a 2nd or 3rd option. Vice Versa.
Enough bashing. We have another good 4-5 months for each game, we'll see from experience which one is better. For right now, few have been in beta [luck bastards], so none of us really know 100% what to expect.
Yeah WAR looks a lot like WoW, but it came from the developers of DAoC which had an incredible pvp system. Plus WoW had some solid gameplay I hate to admit.
AOC looks innovative and refreshing, opposed to some of the recent mmos and the content they are releasing.
You didn't include PIrates of the Burning Sea! Blasphemy! Anyway...I'm not sure about which game will actually be the best as promised features mean nothing for a pre-release MMORPG. But as far as popularity this is my guess on subs after 2 months of release for each: WAR- 275K AoC- 120K PotBS- 100K TCoS- 80K
So we'll come back to this thread in a year and see how I did.
Of one thing I am certain. In one year time each one of these games will do better than you predict. Some even way better.
Oh, and I don't think a game can survive very long with less than 200k subscriber.
The one big thing people seem to forget. No I am not bashing the other games either HOWEVER you need to look at what the system reqs are going to be. All of the other games mentioned are going to be high end pc graphics like LOTRO is, maybe worse (AoC looks like it is going to have huge reqs). Your hardcore gamers will be ok with this, they already have good rigs. However more and more casual gamers are comming to MMO's and to make the most money games will cater to them. I am not saying this is right or wrong however to make the most money and have the most subs this is what a company must do right now. That is why I think WAR will have the most subscribers. Most computers even a year old will be able to run it with med to high graphics where as the rest your looking at low graphics setting with bad fps.
Again I do not claim that makes a game better or worse. Personally I dont care if it is old school text base so long as the gameplay is fun.
I still think WAR and AoC is just a box full of hot air with all the false promises the developers are making. I think quality wise Spellborn will be better because of the commitment of the company behind it and it has the development time behind it. It also revamps the 1 thing I hate about most mmos, the boring combat.
How is WAR a bunch of false promises? They seem to have THE MOST open development cycle I have ever seen for a video game. They are putting out massive amounts of information on the game and are sticking to their guns about the game. Plus they aren't trying to rush it out the door.
Saying something isn't the same as showing something. Its just hype. They definetly look to be rushing it out of the door. They have only spent half the development time and cost on what a game they are depicting will take, yet they are pushing for a 2008 release. I have seen many of these overhyped pieces of crap rushed out the door and when release happens... I will be more then happy to retract my statement when WAR actually delivers what its promising, until then its an overhyped box of hot air that hasn't spent the time or money to deliver what its promising.
From my viewpoint they're combat system is yawntastic and yet they want to compete in an action paced pvp environment. When you get passed the PVP there is nothing left to this game. However, on PVP AoC, The Chronicles of Spellborn, and Granado Espada surpass this game simply because they are working on the combat system. WAR is using an old generation combat system that really doesn't get the adrenaline boiling or promote tactics other gang up for the victory.
First of all they are not rushing it out the door. They are a lot further along then anyone knows and have a much easier time implementing and changing things to the game because they have already worked with the same engine before. The same engine that is used in WAR was used in DAoC. Sure it is an upgraded version, but they understand how to work it.
Secondly DAoC can be considered a 6 year long beta For WAR. They are using everythign they learned from DAoC to make WAR A better game.
Their combat system is much mor interesting then AoC in my opinion. I think AoC's looks craptastic. I know Granada Espada was craptastic. Spellborn looks interesting though.
In my opinion they are making a great system to work with team based combat. We aren't talking about FFA open PVP. RvR takes a combat system that will work well for big team based encounters. You don't want something that can get easily messed with due to lag. For instance AC1 had one of the best systems in my opinion but it would of never worked in huge battles. Their system allowed for dodging of projectiles and even spells. Lag kills systems like that when you have too many people fighting.
So sure AoC will probably be great in small groups, but I think the combat in large groups will seriously suck.
Currently playing: LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too: Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)
AoC will go nowhere on the PC, but it’s coming at the right time on the console and has a chance to make a breakthrough there. 80K subs unless it breaks through in the console market, if it does 500K+ is a distinct possibility.
WAR will be solid but nowhere near the numbers some people are trying to claim. 200K-300K subs is a realistic expectation.
Of one thing I am certain. In one year time each one of these games will do better than you predict. Some even way better. Oh, and I don't think a game can survive very long with less than 200k subscriber.
Agreed on the first point
However, plenty of games have survived for quite a bit with less than 200k. Anarchy Online for instance never broke the 150k mark, and its survived for more than 6 years.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. Hemingway
Majority of people who play wow are looking at warhammer, so that game will more than likely do the best. COS next due to the low system requirments it most likley has, AOC last i dont know why people think a game with high requirments and an M rating will do well, it will have the smallest subs since it has the smallest target market.
Personally ill be playing (if i have time that is lol) pirates of the burning sea, as long as they get enough players to keep the game updated and the servers full enough so its easy to get groups etc ill be happy I dont think a game like pirates though would be as successful as say warhammer, since its arguably a smaller niche, and because of the amount of freedom it has it will turn a lot of people off.
Aion looks boring tbh, but i hope it does well anyway since its not another wow clone, same with age of conan, personally i hope warhammer craft isnt a success, it is so much like wow if it does well it just sends the message copy wow and you will see $$$$$$$$ -_-
WAR will be solid but nowhere near the numbers some people are trying to claim. 200K-300K subs is a realistic expectation.
Dunno mate... all the RL people I know that are playing WoW are planning to switch to WAR the moment it comes out. Some of them do grumble about AoC as well but I can tell you that not one player I personally know plans to stick with WoW, especially since this crappy 80+ expansion has been announced (the Lich King something whocares whatever)

Sounds familiar... thats what people where claiming when WoW arived 200k to 300k max 500k but that would take over 2 years to reach..
Warhammer might get to 1.000.000 in less then a year if ......... Its a better game then WoW, if not, they'll crumble under 100K in a few months.
I just hope that TCoS gets the media attention it deserves, as i really beleive this game could surprise all and everyone. (((Sadly most current WoW players have never heard of the game yet)))

I think AoC will turn off a lot of people, especially the younger players. I know I'm turned off by the "mature" content because the kind of "mature" content they have is childish. Funny how that works. Guess I'm too "mature' to find their "mature" content to be... "mature."
That's way too much use of a single word... sorry.
Oh, and I think AoC will be more popular on Xbox 360 then on PC. Unless AoC does horrible at PC release and no one wants to play it anymore by the time the 360 port is complete.
Anywho.
Spellborn looks to break the mold and be different, and I'll hopefully be able to check it out. I think it will remain in a niche spot, but who knows. If they break the mold enough and create something truly fantastic, it may be the sleeper hit.
WAR I think will be the most "mainstream" of the three, the most marketable and the most popular.
I think the question was "Which of these MMOs will have the most subs?". Not, "which MMO will you play?" or "which MMO will be the most innovative?".
So, if you're betting on subs you'd have to put your money on WAR, which is gonna be pretty big. Honestly, I cant see how AoC or TCoS would have more subs, even if they turn out to be better MMOs. WAR has a TON of hype surrounding it and the game looks enough like the typical MMO to bring in the crowds.
Of course, asking which MMO will be the best is completely subjective. I dont plan on playing any of those three, but if I hear good things about one of the smaller, more sandboxy MMOs Id definately check it out.

I think that WAR will appeal to a wider audience than AoC and therefore have more subscribers.
I think AoC will be the better game (for me) though.
Probably going to be spellborn, at least that's trying something different, wouldn't count out Darkfall though personally.
