OK let's cut to the chase, why would you automatically rule out the possibility of a sandbox environment? If you played KOTOR 1/2, you'd have noticed the capitol ships, items crafting and breaking down and slicing or upgrading, componment collection for repairing and upgrading items, locations such as canteens, apartment, there's even stores you can buy droids and goods from, and a hospital.

I think it's important to keep in mind that we don't know what to expect. BioWare has never made an MMORPG. At this point, we think we are going to get a game like KOTOR 1 and 2, (story driven) However, also keep in mind that Lucas Arts is also involved and they made GALAXIES (sandbox).
I would like to somehow see the best of both worlds here....
1) The SANDBOX quality of building player run cities and businesses. A game that would allow players to create social hubs and have the ability to control almost every aspect in that regard.
2) The STORY DRIVEN elements occur when players engage in quest type content. You see this a lot in WoW and EQ2. Plenty of content, Rapid Expanions (2 or 3) per year.
In the end you get a "STORY-BOX" game that attempts to give players the best of what both styles have to offer.
www.lucasartsbioware.com I just hope its skillbased, has free for all open PvP with player looting, and maybe some sort of FPS element in it. I also dont want it to be a button smash. An extensive mount and crafting system would be great too.
Oh, so you want it to fail, do you?
Wtf? Unlike you, im not a carebear.
Free for all open PvP (with our without player looting) will consign any game to death in the modern MMO market, because the audience for this style of play kills off its own content quickly.
So the five of you who want to keep killing each other over and over again can go ahead and have your fun on ghost town servers that make the least populated SWG server now look like Times Square on New Year's Eve.
Oh really? Hmm... As far ive seen, FFA PvP is the "inn thing" because yourkinds are slowly being extinct.
Anyway, I mean FFA like in old SWG. Darkside Vs the Imperial etc stuff like that.
Yeah, WoW is dying out. You idiot...
Where the fudge did WoW come from? Woah...
And I appologize, I was not aware of the fact that THIS many carebears lurked this forum. Go kill some more boars for boar tusks or something, while the rest of the people actually test out their skill against others.
I think you confused "skill" with "twitch reflexes". PvP can be a fun element in a game, actually I would like some kind of perma death and I would like an MMORPG with real punishments for player killing. Sure let them kill me but let them be known as outlaws and hunted down and shot both by npcs and other law abiding citizens.
Some of you in this thread need to prepare now to be sorely disappointed. If Bioware is developing a KotOR MMO you can expect it to have very little influence from Star Wars Galaxies.
1) The world will not be sandbox. It won't even come close to being sandbox. Bioware doesn't do sandbox. They've even stated their intention for this not to be a sandbox MMO. I'm afraid to say that you're going to have to look toward World of Warcraft and Everquest (and Bioware's previous games) being the major influencers in this area, not Ultima Online or Star Wars Galaxies.
It's not fair to say just yet what kind of game BioWare will make. The fact is, they have never developed an MMORPG. Keep in mind that Lucas Arts is involved here as well and they did SWG (a sandbox game). My guess is, we will see elements of both SANDBOX and STORY DRIVEN game play.
2) The class system and levelling system will not be like Star Wars Galaxies (aka skilling up instead of leveling up): Knights of the Old Republic uses a modified version of the Star Wars D20 roleplaying game which is a version of Dungeons and Dragons D20. I don't see any reason for Bioware to drop this system since both KotORs used it. You could also look to Bioware's other RPGs Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights especially for your cue in this area.
Again, we don't know this for sure. Keep in mind, Lucas Arts is the wildcard here. I don't think we will see a Class System like SWG, but I do think it's possible that BW / LA will break from both traditions and develop a new "ground breaking" system...try to keep an open mind until it's confirmed.
3) KotOR isn't set in the time period of the movies. There is no Rebel vs. Imperial. In KotOR, it isn't black and white... the waters are muddied. A large part of the KotOR Sith/Republic storyline is the idea that neither side has moral superiority.
That sounds KICKASS bro...but you speak of it as if it were a bad thing. I think it's cool as hell
4) I don't think it's likely to expect Free For All PvP from Bioware. You may see FFA servers of course...but remember not even Blizzard has done that. The FFA PvP market is just small in North America. You guys weren't enough to keep Shadowbane profitable, I doubt Bioware is looking to continue that tradition.
I don't think we will see a FFA PVP server either. It's bad for the kiddies and it can drive customers away. I think PVP should be intense, meaningful, balanced and FUN! I don't see this game not having PVP, However I'm sure the powers that be will come up with a cool twist to keep the PVP freaks Happy
5) People want to play Jedi. KotOR's storyline makes allowances for large numbers of Jedi (and Sith). So if you don't want to see Jedi/Sith running around everywhere...prepare to be disappointed. I imagine there will be a large number of them, both NPCs and PCs. I wouldn't be surprised if that were the only class (SW d20 has many different "classes" of Jedi and Sith...but it also has non-Jedi classes so it could really go either way).
I don't see any problem with this because of the Timeline in KOTOR. I do think that while there should be an end game, I don't think it should end with an "ALPHA CLASS" reward. That doesn't mean that you can't work to get better...it means everyone should be able to achieve the same amount of success given their play style....no matter what class / profession they choose. BALANCE IS KEY!
Anyway that's just what I can think of after skimming this thread. Basically throw out any expectations you've developed from SWG, Bioware is going to be doing this Bioware's way (with plenty of interference from LA of course). I just wouldn't champion Bioware as your great Pre-NGE savior...it isn't going to happen.
I think most of are ready to move on....SWGs has left many of us scared and deformed. While I will alway cherish my Pre-CU experience, I look forward to a game that will achieve a different kind of magic. I'm hopful that Lucas Arts and BioWare have seen what SOE did to us and will not allow the same thing to occur with KOTOR ONLINE!
And there's still always the possibility that this LucasArtsBioware thing isn't about the MMO at all.
any ideas for the upcoming mmorpg? please share them with us, maybe developers also checking this forum.... enjoy!!!
well....
1) "SANDBOX" game with "STORY DRIVEN" elements that would make this the first ever "STORY-BOX" mmorpg
2) Inter-dependent profession system that allows players to use hundreds of skills to create a character suited to the individual play style of that player.
3) Fully custom character development that will allow every player a chance to be completley unique.
4) Player Housing and Cities to that allows players to create a complete world in game.
5) Social Hubs such as Canteens, Clubs, and Casinos (mini-gaming establishments). I really can't stress the social aspects enough...COMMUNITY IS EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6) Space battles to include capital ships.
7) PVP PVP and PVP.........Lots of cool battle fields with real in game objectives.
8) Factional competition in PVE....Make PVE mean something (plantary control, market control, ect)
9) Lots to EXPLORE.......I hope it's 3 times the size of STARWARS GALAXIES!
10) Plenty of rich content with at least 3 planned expansions at launch...content is what keeps the kiddies coming back.
Before you start jumping to conclusions about the Bioware MMO, if it is KOTOR, it won't be anything like SWG. Especially as the Hero Engine can't do the big open spaces you get in SWG.
GFW: And what of player-created content? Player-built cities, player-run businesses, that sort of thing?
RV: There'll definitely be an economy in our game, like WoW. But is our game going to be a simulation? No. Our game is an entertainment experience.
JO: If we're going to create immersive, epic stories that are believable, that really goes against having a simulation-type world. Those two things don't go together well.
Taken from the link above. I remeber reading that interview allmost a year ago now, but i couldnt remember where exatcly. I also remember feeling arther disappointed after reading it as it clearly states the new Bioware MMO clarly aims for the masses bringing them an enchanced WoW-like experience :P 1. No sandbox by a longshot (understandable as LA has been burned by a sanbox type game once, i doubt they want to test the formula again) 2.Long story driven questlines (the Bioware trademark- besides they stated the thing they admired about wow was hand held questing with one quest leading straight to another) 3.No player made content, questionable economy model (a big ? on weather there will be dedicated crafting classes at all, or weather the Iconic characters will be able to dable into crafting)
Conclusion: Sorry to bring it down, but weather it's KOTR or not, it doesnt seem the new Bioware MMO will be anything like SWG or ultima.
If we look at KOTOR, crafting, or rather upgrading, should be in there, it's pretty key to how the game operates, however it could be that anyone can do it.
I don't think they will leave out crafting to be honest, it's too big a part of MMOs these days, but it probably won't be on the scale of SWG or Vanguard, more like WoW's. What I find really encouraging though is they don't want a grind or repeatable content, they want it to always be a new fresh experience as you play your character.

I have to agree...I do think this game will be WOW-like, however that's no reason you can't have cool Social Hubs and kickass PVP!

Absolutely, it should be completely impossible for Light Side and Dark Side players to co-exist peacefully. I'm thinking more along the lines of EQ2 than WoW though, where you can defect to the other side if you wish through some complex questing or through your choices in how you resolve quests.
Like throughout the game the quests should offer you various solutions to the quest, each with differing points towards your alignment, so you character becomes Light Side based or Dark Side based depending on your actions and how you play him. Then PvP battlegrounds/arenas would be open for those who are declared as supporting one side or the other.
Lots of scope and possibility, but I think I'd die if I saw a Jedi and Sith in the same group doing some random quest together.

One of the only things I hated about SWG pre-CU / or anytime for that matter. I would see groups of Rebels and IMPs working together...I could never understand that!
It'll be the usual mainstream crap ,because the singleplayer games, you could only be a jedi lol, if your seeking complex quests, lots of options, look the other way.

Nowadays in SWG you ignore faction for a lot of content, simply because finding 8 people to do the DWB and keeping the group together is more difficult than the content itself, by a long shot.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.
For myself I do not want any SOE SWG gameplay reflected in a Bioware designed game if it is a Star Wars MMORPG. I want nothing to be the same because SOE made a terrible game to begin with- no offense guys. The SWG engine could not even handle the sonic intensity of what Star Wars is from a SW hardcore fans perspective. In fact we all know that SWG's timeline is butchered to hell. If anyone can design a proper SW MMORPG it is Bioware.

I agree ...
However even back in the day (2004), it was very common to see IMPs and REBs engaged in social activites. I always thought it should be all out war with one another all the time.
EXAMPLE: Last summer, when I was still playing, I would go to restuss with my Spy. I would be under cloak and would always see a group of REBs and IMPs working togther to kill "THE HAND" spawn. Well while they were standing around waiting, I would get as close as possible and pop off a shot at a REB and re-cloak. This would break thier truce and they would all start attacking one another...*sigh* Good times....

now days you can't find other players on most SWG servers. You have to wonder what's next. I guess the next plan would be grouping with NPCs.
They already have NPC grouping in FFXI Blitz lol! They also have it in Guild wars, and when you think about it, a pet is technically an NPC. I will admit though, NPC grouping in Guild wars stinks, not because it's not viable, you definetely can do a lot with it. But it's just that, it just makes guild wars seem too much like a single player game with a chat channel. Kinda lame when you think about it. Good thing it's free though.

In terms of in America and right now, you might be correct. The ascent of competitive gaming plus mmorpgs is leading toward the open ended FFA environment. But a good FFA PvP will sell well overseas easily.
The problem with FFA PvP is that no games are designed with it in mind -- that will change the moment one of these MMO producers decides s/he wants to try something off the wall.

This would break thier truce and they would all start attacking one another...*sigh* Good times....
I just don't think enemies should work together!
Rebs and Imps cooperating against NPCs in a PvP zone?
That's wack.
Yup...
Sad but true! I hope that when KOTOR 3 online goes live they will gaurd against this.
now days you can't find other players on most SWG servers.
Good thing it's free though.
too bad the npc grouping stuff
In terms of in America and right now, you might be correct. The ascent of competitive gaming plus mmorpgs is leading toward the open ended FFA environment. But a good FFA PvP will sell well overseas easily.
The problem with FFA PvP is that no games are designed with it in mind -- that will change the moment one of these MMO producers decides s/he wants to try something off the wall.
