Yup, skillbased and FFA PVP will make it fail for sure (original SWG failed). Pre-cu SWG will have 0 (zero, zip, nada) influence on the Bioware game.
They will hit for SECURE systems and types of gameplay that words. I'm not expecting any ground breaking stuff in systems. They only thing Bioware will might improve is the way quests work in MMOs.

Sure, regardless of the backstory, I'd really like:
-game's core functionality runs smoothly at release,
-that the intended audience for the game at release remains the intended audience throughout--if the audience is expanded, that this is not done at the expense of current players,
-that expansions actually add to the game, rather than taking things away and/or breaking things,
-that intentions for the game are only made public after the company providing the service has made a decision they will follow through on--this involves checking with developers regarding the feasibility of plans, and checking with representative samples of the target audience before announcing plans,
-that items made available in paid for expansions or special editions of the game are not later removed or disabled,
-that any veteran rewards given for consumer loyalty are not deleted or changed into something with lesser or no value,
-that player progress regarding character builds and quests are respected and not deleted with little warning,
-that it be easy enough to get "into" for new players, but have enough depth to retain veteran players,
-that there be opportunities for players who love combat, as well as players who enjoy things like crafting,
-that there be some game mechanics that facilitate social interaction outside of combat (not forced of course, but available to those who enjoy it)
-that certain character builds work well for soloing PVE content, while others work well for grouping,
-that different character builds complement each other in group combat scenarios,
-some kind of customizable living space would be cool too, like your own home, room or ship that you can move around in,
-optional pvp in special zones that have good reasons for players to go there--e.g. exploration badges that take you into the zone, and/or quests that can take you into the zone that have enticing rewards--something worth running the guantlet for. These quests though would have to be optional ones, not tied to overall success or development of the character (to avoid frustration), but enticing and fun for those that enjoy both PVE and PVP.
-customer service that really is available in-game to help you with the rare bug you may encounter, and that they are the kind of people that actually enjoy helping.

Well you freak, or duh-freak. I would not oppose you under any other title. With Star Wars comes the expectation that everyone will be able to play, even if their contribution is thin. Your request is for a fringe game. Good luck getting anyone with 2 cents to agree with you. Luckily, I am sure Bioware wants a long term following, which makes your pst statements mute.

Except one of things Walton said at the GDC was that a big mistake of current companies is in trying to keep gamers. You should offer them a fun experience and let them leave when they want, otherwise you end up providing timesinks that aren't fun and generally make the player start to hate the game and leave in disgust.
The former is far more likely to return than the later when you do release new content and expansions.

Ok so what you're saying is that MORE starwars fans want a good PvE game than a PvP game?
Well I 100% agree with that, no doubt... I wouldn't eat my heart out if the bioware MMO (if starwars) would be a PvE centric game with NO PvP at all, i'd just look for some other game.
Basically I dont care about the IP, I prefer game that make their own Lore (I.E. Tabula Rasa, DAoC) because they can bend the lore and do whatever they want with it. What I dont like is set lores, like hobbits cant kill hobbits. You get my point?
And what I want is a game I would like, just like anyone else.
Well if Bioware is making a Star Wars MMO bet your credits that it will be nothing like SWG pre NGE or NGE. They will do something completely seperate from Kosters's and post design. Something like dual weapons!
You know, I personally think that the KOTOR system that was in place for the single player games would be a pretty good foundation for an MMO. Simply remove the ability to pause, (obviously), and expand on the skill / force trees, professions, and "open-ness" of the worlds.
The great thing about the way KOTOR was designed, was that not everyone had to be a jedi to be viable. The differant professions had unique skills and abilities which made them invaluable to a group's flexability.
Remove the ability for Jedi to learn computer hacking, security, etc..(since they are too busy learning force-related skills and lightsaber combat), and force them to groups with the other professions of they want to be able to accomplish those tasks.
And of course, I think certain skills should be harder to attain, IE dual-wielding. Perhaps reserve skills like that to those who focus on their saber skills, thereby sacrificing their potency in other areas.

In terms of Dual Wielding, they should learn a lesson from CoH now that they're incorporating it. The combo mechanizm sounds awesome! and would definetely make duels interesting. I agree that the combat system could potentially be used for an MMO since it's divided into three slots (attack, force skill, granade) therefore eliminating the chance of simply spamming all your special attacks, you'll have 3 slots to choose from. Making it so you have to toggle between specials rather than having them all in one organized line.

You know that's a really good point. I think these games many times hurt themselves by taking their lore so literal that it inhibits artistic freedom. I think most lore should be left open for interpretation so that their is some wiggle room down the road for unforseen problems.
BioWare Austin likes PvP, whether they add it or not is anyone's guess.
I don't think it's worth making a game without it these days, you can have your PvE servers, your PvP servers, your FFA PvP servers and whatever else you want, but it's better to cater to the largest possible group than completely close your door to part of the market.
WoW's PvP may not be that good, but if they can make PvP work for the masses, so can BioWare.
BioWare Corp. Announces partnership with LucasFilm on a New Massively Multiplayer Online RPG Project set in the Star Wars Universe
EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada, April 1, 2006
Canadian videogame developer BioWare Corp. announced today that is has finalized negotiations with LucasFilm to develop a new Massively Multiplayer Online game set in the Star Wars universe.
Tentatively entiteld, "Star War: The Hand of Thrawn", the game will allow fans to progress into the years past the final chapter of the Star Wars lexicon (Return of the Jedi) and on into the imaginative works of writer Timothy Zahn who penned a very successful series set around the post Jedi universe.
Development on this project will occur primarily at recently opened BioWare Austin under the guidance of Gordon Walton who led the development on Star Wars Galaxies project.
The Star Wars community collapsed relatively quickly after Walton departed. "There are jobs aplenty for folks!" said Walton in regards to the conclusion of Star Wars Galaxies. "Alot of that talent has been punished and are very eager to get back to a core vision and an enjoyable experience. We will be happy to have them."
Bioware will more than likely do something new or follow their creative world of Mass Effect rather than do something that has already been done and will undoubtably have direct competition with SWG.

While I see your point, I highly doubt SWG will be any real competition to Bioware's MMO lol (assuming Bioware's MMO will be in the SW universe)

Kudos for a great post! This is among many slide posts leading up to what we al believe is the next level game for our favorite IP. And yes, they have been punished. I saw a thread two minutes ago linking Tiggs to HG London, wouldn't it be great to have her back in another SW mmo? God knows if anyone saw the punishment, it was her...
Aside. PvP should certainly be considered for Bioware's title, and check my recent posts and ban, I do not support what some are offering, but some incarnation is needed.
They have a chance here to right, I'll keep my fingers crossed for 09.
Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.
As cool as the KOTOR games were/are.. if BioWare DOES put out a new Star Wars MMO, it will be set in the movie time frame. It is the era the majority of players think of when they think Star Wars..
Regardless.. there should be PvP, but it should only be consensual, perhaps using the AoC "Battlefield" idea.. where the Rebs & Imps fight for control of a big chunk of real estate..
You should be able to play as a droid, and as you "level" you gain access to new "mods" to improve skills..
I would rather it do away with strict classes, but have various skill trees.. like SWG originally had, but less structured.. then you could have "Guilds" you could join once you had the requiste skills, to gain access to new quests/content.. a little like EVE, but with specilization coming later, instead of at creation.. I think that is more "star Warsy" then any of the NGE crap
An open skill tree would then allow for characters to "quest" to become a Jedi (or Sith, if you're going to allow one.. might as well allow the other).. or to become a Mandalorian (since they're a culture, not a Race).. or to join CorSec.. or any other Faction..
An actual In-Game mechanic or some kind of effect for becoming "Dark Side".. beyond the "this side attacks you now, but these people like you" Light Side/Dark side should be more then just extended Rebel/Imperial..
And more Races to play.. if EQ2 can have over a dozen Races.. so can a new Star Wars MMO..
Well, I think that using Episode's 4, 5 and 6 would be bad, simply because SWG used it and made a total hash of it. Also it would require restrictions on Jedi or you will upset the hardcore Star Wars fans, and if you do that you upset the non-hardcore Star Wars fans who all want to be Jedi.
Episode 1, 2 and 3 might work, but everything is focusing on that timeframe at the moment, is there really room for an MMO too? It's a war for a start which means players are likely going to be restricted to what they can do cause half the galaxy is fighting each other. You'd also again have a lot of canon to stick to, a lot of it changing too as they do the TV series about it.
Now Kotor's era is completely open ended, very few restrictions on what they can do.. makes sense for an MMO in my opinion.
Also, it's friggin Star Wars, whenever it's set people will know it's Star Wars the second they see a lightsaber.. so they should go with the setting that best suits an MMO's requirements.

Anyone remeber this April fools joke that showed up on BioWare's website?

- Biowares MMO will outdo, outperform, and out sell any of SOE's games-lol/
Hmm...maybe the real joke was that it was actually true.... sometimes the best place to hide something is in plain sight.....

Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside
Beta: Lotro, Tabula Rasa, WAR.
