Awesome. I was really skeptical after playing the beta early on, but a lot of my fears have been eliminated. Combat is a blast, movement and animation is great, the feeling of being in the middle of a war is felt everywhere (well, at least up till level 5 lol)
So, I'm glad I didnt listen to the nay sayers, because I'm having a real good time so far, I dont even feel the need to level quickly as in every other mmo i've played, and thats refreshing.

I had the same reaction tbh. I played beta and felt it was kind of meh, but I few of my friends are playing it so I bought retail. I reallt don't know if I just didn't give the game a chance during beta or they have just improved it that much, but I am acutally pretty happy with the the game.
Glad to hear you are both enjoying it
Same here. I played the beta and hated it. It just didn't grab me at that time. I'm glad I decided to pick up the retail version. They made a lot of nice changes and I'm having a blast playing it.
That, Sir, is the hallmark of a good game for you. First impressions really don't count for anything. In MMORPGs, it is the long haul game that is important.

For me, having fun in the moment is far more inportant than anything at any games level cap.
For me, the end game is truly about 5% of the overall value of a game. It's the journey, and in TR the Journey is a complete blast
3 months of playing and the journey here is every bit as fun as a game could possibly be for me.
If I reach level cap and the game is no longer fun, I will easily move on and not ever regret the fun that I had along the way. It will still be a great game no matter how you break it down

Sorry to disagree, but if I'm enjoying a game at all, at any time, its a good game for me. I don't benchmark anything that way. If i knew i would hate it in 6 months, i would still play it now because it is so much fun. And first impressions mean everything. If I popped it in and it sucked right away, then I would not play it again, regardless of how fun it may get later, (unless there is some major fixes etc) I don't like to suffer through crap to get to the good stuff, especially if you are paying monthly.
So the hallmark of a good game for me is not what its going to be, its what it is, and what is is now is fun.
It'll only be a "great game no matter how you break it down" to you, some of us actually differ between your regular game and a mmo. The common mmo player does not like the "play through a game, earn the ending, and move on" situation in their mmo, me included. If I wanted a game I could enjoy the journey through and just leave, I'd buy a regular rpg and save myself the extra monthly fees.
Obviously, everyone is dfferent, but generally there are qualities that make an mmo and usually people play them for those reasons.
My point is, generally an mmo needs to have a good start (hook) before most people are even motivated to reach the high levels, and then once there, they need things to apply their power gained through hours of leveling, gearing, skilling, and whatnot. Right now, the most popular method for this seems to be pvp, but most games are coming out for more interesting ways to enjoy the game, like FFXI's mercenary missions and Pokotan (or whatever it's called) game, and LOTRO's monster and chicken play.
So he has a good point, I'm glad you enjoy the game so far but it's far too early to tell if the game is a good mmo or just a good game. I want to know if the game will have lasting appeal before I dive in, too many boring mmo's recently, and all of the ones I've wanted to try got pushed back... (Spellborn, Warhammer, Aion, Conan)
And you're right, you need a good "hook" to draw people in, in this case its the combat (for me at least). Its very entertaining, even at my low level. Its very rare for me to find a game this enjoyable in the beginning, every other mmo I've played (vanguard, wow, eq2, swg, coh, and countless others) seemed very boring in the beginning, which is not really that bad, as they did ramp up a bit. But this is one of those rare games that had me from the beginning, and hopefully will just get better, but as of right now, I don't care if it does. I'm no fanboy, if this game goes south, then i'll drop it with no problem, but i won't regret having a good time before that.
But the thing is, I look at those that the end game sucked in my opinion and I don't for a second consider them "not great mmorpgs". No matter how you play your games, if you are all about the end-game, it's a gamble. No t everbody's opinions match up and what might be extremely fun for some might be truly boring and stupid for others. So if I get to the end game of TR and it sucks for ME, I will not regret one second of the ride, because the ride is a ton of fun and I play these games to have fun. If I get to the end and it rocks, well then I get a bonus But I can promise you that if I get to the end and it sucks, there will be someone else who thinks it rocks and vice-versa. WoW's end game is a pretty good example. I played to 60 and then 70 with the expansion and never once saw the end game as anything other than complete BS. But I had fun while I played and I don't regret it one bit. I don't need to get 5 years out of my games anymore (I use to when I was younger) in order to justify 50 bucks and 15 per month, all I have to do is be having fun in the moment, but I'm certainly not under the illusion that everyone feels the same way that I do. But those that do just might love TR, and that's all that matters... for us
I'm not knocking anyone for wanting to wait and hear how the game evolves, but for me I'd rather be a part of the fun right now
Again... to each their own
I just do not believe you guys.
I have serious doubts that the crap fest that I played in late beta is suddenly a very good game.
Pesonally I just think alot of you are used to crap games (Face of Mankind, Roma Victor, Knights Online, etc) so any thing better then that is good in your opinion. I also think your just trying to trick alot of us into playing this so that it will not sputter and hang on by a thread like the above mentioned titles.
I will just wait for the trial to see these "Improvements". I refuse to listen to this propaganda and be fooled into paying 40 something bucks for a crap game, and I advise anyone else that might thinking about trying this game out to do the same.

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith
As one of the bigger fans of this game, I highly recommend the same thing you just did. I don't want anyone to buy this on my merit... just becasue i am having fun doesn't mean anyone else will.
But I will say this, if you hated it that much in beta, you'll probably hate it now too. It's gotten better, it's a lot more polished, but the core gameplay has remained the same. The good news is that you didn't waste any money... and neither did we!
We can both be happy
And those games you list there are pretty much junk in my opinion, so we agree about that too.
But none of that changes the fact that there are a select few who hated the game and now love it. Doesn't mean everyone will, but some have. Like this guy... had you been there through his initial impressions you'd understand just how much he didn't like it, even at release, but then his mind changed...

NCSoft have never really seen their titles last long term until they actally do TBH, hence why the big selection of games they have, we are in their eyes ment to hop from game to game, however few have met that idea so far with them which is really good (although TBH a packaged deal would be very nice for them GIV PLX NC!!)
To the factor of 'reaching cap' and 'end game' TBH in an MMO world these shouldn't exsist however the console gamer thinking beleaves every game must have the content 'rewards' after 'completion' whch in an MMOs case is normally max level..
As people have said for some the leveling experence to that MMO is the game itself, and yes pvp or more creativie ideas are comming into play as the final reward within the game, I beleave that these are the tools to help us enjoy the game after the leveling is done and as far as we know CP PVP and the clan buff betting system will at least keep the pvp players to TR..
Final matter is if you like that idea then you'll stay with TR if you don't you'll move on however that doesn't say it's the 'end' of the game, the true end of the game is when servers close, MMOs never end until that happens so taking all that into account 'end game' is actally in the player's head, so 'end game' is when you hit the unsubcribe button
Bring on the WARRRRGGHH!
One of the best sentences said so far, and while some may feel we are all jaded from the flavor of new... at least this game is gripping from the start. Only time will tell in the end, and to quote from Mith, its the journey to end thats the most important.
We aren't here to convince you to play this game, just to try and give an honest opinion for those who would enjoy this type of mmo and don't want to buy it without some critiques. Its not perfect by any means, but its fun. And yes the beta was crap, but it has improved. My biggest gripe with beta was the missing animations, the horrid lag and sometimes my character would simply not be there, but his gun would be. It seems pretty stable now.
But all that said, if you don't like this type of game, by all means stay away.

There were many a MMORPG I played for a few hours (or less) and just found absolutely nothing worthwhile in them.
Hellgate and Fury to name the worst two culprits (though nearly every Asian grind-fest comes to mind as well...)
But with Tabula Rasa, once I bought retail and starting playing.. just awesome.... instant hooked. I had the same experience with EQ2 trial (this was after quitting WoW) but then got really bored of EQ2 at about level 15...
hopefully TR will be my new game for the next few months
So some peoples opinions are propaganda and yours are what? Fact? So much anger. Relax, when you're finding conspiracys in the boards for an mmo it's time to get some perspective.

I agree 100%. As long as you enjoy the game for a decent amount of time then it is worth the investment. Don't let these end game people try to get you down, the end game in most games is when I uninstall because I don't worry about items and such. I like the progression, and the goals involved.
Now let me add my 2 cents in. First...i was upset that i didnt even get in beta. 2nd i heard nothing but bad things coming out of beta. I had been following this game for some time and the negative post and reviews almsot turned me away. I've played a number of MMO's and from what i've seen so far in this game i have to say that it may be here to stay. Yes i still tried it regardless of the bad reviews from beta testers.
Im impressed with the depth and UI of the game, the game is "good" hands down. I think they did a good job on this game, the game is fun, and not a lame LoTr, or D&D online. You can pretty much tell with in your first five levels if your going to stick with the game or not, and this one's a sticker. I agree with all of the positive post that iterate that this game is a good game. Oh and first impressions do count, just look at Archlord, D&D online, etc.

The game was always fun...till about 20, then it became the same thing over and over and was a chore to test. So if you've just got it, great I'm glad you enjoy it, just few people are saying it doesn't last past a certain point. Hope it does for you.
Now, go ahead and flame me, Know you want to
I got past 20 in beta and was still having plenty of fun. I'm an explorer and I love the world and the whole logos language system. I just wish I wasn't tied up working on final projects right now so I could play more
I think some of you guys are missing the point of the post that set this soon to be flame war ablaze.
It's not a matter of looking to the future of what a game will become. It's myopic to say that you enjoy a game for what it is and gladly hand over your monthly sub without a care in the world as to the quality and longevity of the game.
The happy go lucky, "the game is fun now" mantra works great for stand alone single player games that just have a box cost, but that same philosophy falls short in so far as MMORPGs are concerned.
Furthermore, it's this kind of mentality that has brought about the horrible current trend of shallow MMORPGs. If any game genre should be filled with depth and complexity it should be the MMORPG.
MMORPGs are too expensive to be shallow, and as long as we the consumer pay for sub par games that have no lasting appeal, people will keep making sub par games with no lasting apeal.
Word
Yo,
I totally agree, this game is incredible. I get the same feeling I got when I first started playing EQII. This game is one of the best MMOs I have played and it is still so new. I expirence some lag, and there are a few bugs that I have seen, but It will only get better from here! I highly reccomend this game!
I agree except that A) TR is only shallow in some peoples opinions and I don't care how much "depth" a game has to it, if it's not fun than I'll never see that depth.
I pay for entertainment. I am very entertained with TR and I like a deep book or a deep game as much as anyone.
Take FFXI for example (best example I can think of) Has a pretty good amount of depth but was fun for about 2 weeks. Vanguard was another one, I followed it from the day it was announced, it sounded very "deep" in theory, I call it shallow as anything since it was the worst 71 hours I ever spent in my gaming history... what good was the depth if the game outright sucked to me? TR has been a total blast for 3 months for me so far, I find the story compelling and engaging and I look forward to logging in every night.
The onyl way I'll ever know how the end game is (sounds great to me so far, CP's are awesome and clan wars are really fun) is if I get to the end game, and I will never get to any end game in a game that I don't find fun. So if you want to blame me for the genre falling short in your opinion, feel free... I disagree 100% with you. I have been here from the beginning of the genre. I have never judged any game publicly without playing it for at least a couple of months of retail (not counting my beta feedback to the devs) and I certainly would never knock a games "end game" without having actually played through it.
Again, the only way that i know of for me to accurately and fairly judge the end game, is to get there. The fact that TR is as fun and as solid as it is makes me pretty certain that I'll be able to give a detailed report some day.
It's all opinion. In my opinion TR is more fun than any other mmorpg to date and has enough depth to justify it being a great mmorpg, from what I have seen from a few months of playing.
I am truly sorry that you feel that we're degrading the genre by having a blast in this game.
Peace
Good post and right on the money.
As long as the public continues to consume poorly made products the developers will continue to take advantage of the situation by putting out lackluster games that aren't worth the box price, let alone the development costs.
We, the consumers, are the only ones that can change the situation by voting with our wallets.
