seems WoW's subscriber base isn't going to drop anytime soon.

according to this article:

www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php

I have actually. I have tried multiple attempts and none of them brought up anything, nor do I see a thread about this in the pub.

That's in the WoW section, I assumed people who don't visit every section might be interested as well, considering it's a new milestone for mmorpg's.

Um, I do. And if you had ever played an asian MMO you would know that it does matter.

I tell you what, Blizzard's account could and do care.  1 BILLION  a year is one hell of a lot of revenue for a gaming company.  I bet that the people who founded Blizzard are kicking themselves in the arse right now for selling out to Vivendi.  Those founders could be mega rich today.

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

Where do you get 1 billion a year?  Only about 2-3 million of those subscribers are paying 15 dollars per month.  Plus you would have to subtract the costs from their profit, so while they are making a ton of money it definitely isn't 1 billion per year.

    Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)

    Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

Exactly, they sell a lot more than just subscriptions for WoW also.  Vivendi has also reported that WoW carries the entire gaming division for that company.  The profits Blizzard is delivering is nuts and Blizzard has also retained enough cash they don't have to worry about money again.  From just the 2.3 million NA/EU share of their customers they bring in $34,500,000.00 per month.  They still have over 7 million more subscription payments coming in each month from Asia.   The money they make is mind numbing to say the least.

I must be the only MMO fan left who has never played that game...

I say keep it that way.  You're not missing much IMO.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

I posted this in the other thread but since we are talking about it here now :D

This is too funny. At this stage of the game WOW's only marketability is making the numbers larger than they really seem. What is interesting though is this...

According to the Blizzard website, on July 24th,2007 they announce more than 9 million subscribers from WOW. www.blizzard.com/press/070724.shtml  Which is also the 3rd quarter

Now yesterday Vivendi comes out with a report stating they have 9.3 million subscribers. www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php 3rd quarter results

So if you look at both statements carefully since July 24th, 2007  from today, which is almost 4 months, they have had no increase of subscribers whatsoever which also may conclude that the 19 percent sales increase is false because more subs = more money per month. So in that 4 month span who did they sell their boxes to to get such a 19 percent sale increase ?

I do think WOW, the game itself, is a nice game to play but creating bogus numbers is such a huge turn off. Nice scheme don't you think ? Sorry but i'm not buying this sales pitch.

I actually followed WOW for a little while during development, hoping it would be the next PvP game.  When it launched I thought it looked like a good solid game, but nothing new.  I've actually been pretty desperate for an MMO lately, but I've never really heard anything about WOW that would convince me to check it out.

On an absolute scale I agree. However, of all the shallow, materialistic, level-based fantasy MMOs out there I think WoW would be hard to beat overall. If you enjoy some aspects of those types of MMOs I think it deserves a look.

I wouldnt get too hung up on making sense of the numbers unless you are familiar with accounting principles; they can play around them to a degree and it is still considered kosher. Maybe its:  new box sales + merchandise + new subs - cancelled subs = +19%.

Regardless, there shouldnt be much concern about threat from competitors.
