Who said those games are wow-killers? Just because some brainless twit made a thread here how another wow-killer failed? They were never supposed to be wow-killers.
A WoW-killer could be a new toy with movable hands representing big orc with an axe by Hasbro that could eventually be improved by buying him a new axe that would look more shiny and a new piece of armor in a bit different color.
But what you fail to realize is..... that 'you' are part of the problem. Since you (and many others) continue to play and pay for a game that you freely admit you are tired of.... it serves to prop up the image that the way to keep subs is to create yet another game like WOW.
Fair enough, I won't argue with that logic. But it's pretty well-accepted that WoW's success isn't as much what it does as what others don't. Eve is a wonderful game, with flawless presentation and polish... it's just not fun after an hour.
The thing is that you admit at this point that you prefer simpler non in-depth mmos,EVE doesnt cater to player looking for kill X mobs, powerlvling and gear/raid base gameplay.Soo you say that all mmos are the same nowadays but you cant deny that you like how most mmos are WoW clones.
The simple reasons that WoW is soo popular and doesnt bleed 50% of it's subs after 6-12 months off release is:
1.It is based on a popular well known IP (warcraft, wich is actualy copyed from warhammer tabletop game)
2.It caters to a young player base, having simple game mechanics that do not require much understanding/thinking (not trying to offend any WoW players),yes it is true alot of older/mature player play WoW,but that is a reduced number, about 200-500k of WoW's current population can be considered mature.
3.Gear/raid based end game wich forces players to compete to get better gear than the other players in order to pvp, alot of players love to have best stat items that makes them look "cool" and give them a big edge on the less equiped players.
4.Addictive simpleness,if you want to be succefull in WoW you must raid constantly to gain that tier armor.
What alot of devs lack nowadays is imagination, most devs nowadays only make mmogs cause they see WoW and think that if they copy them they will strike a gold mine. But in reality they do not care of gamers, the devs themselves arent gamers and that's the reason why most mmos fail nowadays.
For exemple if SWG didnt have those 2 stupid WoW copy attemps (CU and NGE) they would reach a good stable sub base, but they thought they would make more money if the game was WoWish.
And yes I know /wall of text crits you for 213812388209349082094 dmg

Lol its funny how all of a sudden people forget the threads on this site and the threads on all these so called wow killing games, calling them the next big mmos and saying now wow dies. Funny how all these games die before launch or neevr live upto the hype. Funny how the only game that has lived upto the hype is wow. Funny thing that. If you want to call the whole Vanguard, EQ, TR, G&H,Darkfall etc etc communities twits go ahead, beceause these are the same communities that procalimed for months and years that wow would be dead on the release of these games. Only thing that dies were these games. Funny thing that.
WoW has become more of a social network just like Facebook / MySpace / MSN, but it has a playable gui. There are more people using it today, just cause of the relationships they've established and the social environments they've created, more so than it being a game.
In any other MMO, maybe even WoW.. a majority of us have / had a social aspect as part of the game, but yet a lot of us MMOers also played the game due to the thrill of the hunt / quest / <insert your reason>, cause its a "GAME". I left WoW, cause I felt the the game overall along with the community, were more interested in just making WoW a giant social event / calendar.
But, as someone may of mentioned and I agree.. nothing out there is going to slay the WoW beast, but time.

I'm talking about myself and about mine, not yours, not his, not hers, but mine expectations, not dreams, not lies, not salsa dance, but expectations. I never expected a game without "Craft" in its name and big Blizzard logo on the box to ever beat WoW and become the ultimate wow-killer. But look, there's a new toy down there. Hasbro Gloves in red color!

While I can not speak to the Trial subscriptions, I do know of 3 cancelled/expired accounts in my own household that were being counted as part of the 9+ million active accounts 6 plus months after being cancelled/having expired.
Just have to wonder how many other accounts are/were treated in a like fashion.

fans of the game probably said that about the new game being a WoW killer - I agree
I've been saying for years this game isn't and can't be for everyone, that it's not a mainstream game (though that doesn't mean it's a niche game either).
We have our target audience, the core gamer, about whom I've posted and talked about extensively. For those people, I really think Vanguard is going to be their next big MMOG -- not just a game, but a home for many years. But again, as the gamespace both grows and matures, there are already a lot more choices out there, and in the future there will be even more choices.
Vanguard was *never* intended to be a mainstream game like WoW (regardless of what fans said)
WoW is the easiest commercial mmo available - thats why its popular, because its an "EASY mode" mmo
What makes other MMOs "hard" in comparison. I've played just about everything on the market. Tedious and bogged down in bad mechanics doesn't make a game hard or another game easy mode in comparison.
Everything on the market right now (save for a few niche games) revolves around finding a certain level range of enemies that represent an almost certain percentage of victory in combat. Finding a sequence of skill button mashing to achieve that success and repeat. Hard only comes when you press beyond that comfort zone and try new tactics on higher level creatures or more of the same level creatures at once. All MMOs out right now are the same in difficulty for the most part.
WoW is no easier than any other game on the market right now, save for elimination of much of the tedium.
WoW is popular and retains subscriptions because it was designed to be fun right from the start. That was the goal of the game, make it fun. Blizzard even hired veteran guild leaders from other successful games to help design the game to be fun. That is where most other launches have failed. They put just about everything else above fun. A genre with failed launch after launch just makes it easy for WoW to retain players even though people are ready for "the next big thing".

Imagine WoW where you would have all mobs with +50% damage and +50% health, where one mistake - one bad pull would make a difference between life or death. Where mobs would follow you for 2 minutes til they give up and always slow you down or be faster than you so hit you all the time if you try to run.
Hmm maybe because WOW is still fun and many of the countries outside of the USA have poorer economies thus they have cheaper older computers and WOW runs so well on old POS computers. Plus many people find more value and fun in WOW then the other games which take a greater deal of money to get running decently. Remember that many foreigners are not spoiled by all these other games. Not everyone is a MMORPG fanatics like most of us here on this website.

Would that make the game harder?
The answer is
Yes It Would!
No it wouldn't. Every game already has that if you attack things a few levels more difficult than the "sweet spot". You do less damage and they do more with the net effect being what you mistake as being "harder".
You miss the entire point as always. There is a sweet spot exists in every game. That is how current MMO makers balance gameplay. Simply upping some stats doesn't make the game harder as people will just downshift a level or two in the enemies they fight which is exactly what I pointed out.

No you didnt get my point. Fastest way to achieve something in WoW is to do easy tasks, from leveling to raiding. Yes you can go to level 50 zone at level 42, but that's terribly slow. But imagine being that the fastest way where killing same level mobs would give little or no exp at all. That would be difficult and challening, because people would need to do something in order to kill 8 levels higher mob and not mechanically killing everything like they do.
I want a game where fastest way and most rewarding is the one being the hardest. I don't care if there is also easy content, but I want that one to be hardest. In WoW it's simply not. Fastest way to do anything it just simply very very very very very... very very easy.

forgot that - excellent point
WoW doesnt have high system demands so more older computers are able to it.
I like WoW for what it is, and will continue to visit it now and again

Then do what some other crazy dude did. 1-70 entirely naked. No gear, no weapons, just abilities and his tough, rough, and heavily blistered Troll knuckles. Or use nothing but vendor bought grey/white gear. Or only use stuff you craft yourself...
But, if you want a game where the "most rewarding is the one being the hardest" then just wait for WAR and leveling entirely through PvP.

WAR will be an utter mess nothing more. Probably enjoyable for ex-wow players and a few others.

You can patronise all you want mate, no skin of my nose. Lol and you think a game without the name blizzard or craft in it cant be sucessful, please get a grip and some clue. If half the developers that produced these games spent their money wisely and actually had a proper research plan they would not bomb. Infact i dont think any mmo will reach into the millions again like wow unless its is 100% something totally new from every other mmo out. The fact that blizzard has built up their fan base from many years of producing quality games and still continue to produce just shows how far they are ahead business wise and game devlopement wise. Blizard never proclaimed wow to be the next innovative thing, but they provide fun games people actually enjoy playing. I

First off, how do you know your subscriptions we're being counted? This sounds exetemely crazy to me, that you have a list of wow's active subscriptions and just so happened to find your name there. Odd. But anyway.
I'm only writting to say that I thinks it's sad people shit on Blizzard now and talk so much shit about WoW. The fact is, I have played, stopped, played again, stopped, played again, stopped and am now playing again. Here's the deal. It's a good game. Let's give Blizzard some damn credit for making a game that has made MMO History. As said before, whether you like it or hate it, you can't deny what it has done for PC games in general. I take into account how many articles I read before WoW was release about PC games dying. It seems that ever since WoW's release, things have heated up more then ever. Blizzard showed developers that there was still money to be made in PC games.. A lot of money to be exact. Now they can't take all the credit, as there have been some really good releases lately, but they are responsible for a large part.
In addition, they brought people to the MMO market who otherwise would not have given it a shot. I admit, it has brought a lot of folks that I wouldn't play with in a hundred years, but it brought them none the less.
In closing, I submit that WoW retains subscribtions because it's a great game. It's fun. It's fimiliar. It's colorful. It's addicting.
I'm not saying it doesn't have it's faults. I have left several times, but I keep coming back. But whether or not you like or hate the game, let's not forget what Blizzard has done for gaming.

Lol calm down If you think VG wasnt hyped and for months and years on their won forums hyped to be the next big game and wow killer game along on this site, then you trully have your head, deep in the sand. Lol I lied about VG and all its fans saying it would destroy wow???? yeah right.
Newsflash for you Thillian blizzard advertised their game, this is what companies do to promote their product. If you hadn't noticed Lotro has done a pretty big marketing campaign so please, don't patronise me then start giving false comments.
Maybe you should go bash VG and the state its in before even saying 1 bad thing against wow. Thillian you constantly bash wow, why do you even post anything regarding wow related? Do you secretly love it really and you are playing it now, while writing under the pretence of being a wow hater lol.
WoW is not for the hardcore gamer or maybe even the experienced gamer. It is made for people who just want to sign in, play a bit, and have a life. For people who enjoy the social aspects of the game. It is not just for young people though it makes sense that younger players would like it.
The problem is that there are so many people who don't like the game who can't understand in their wildest dreams why it is popular. They are in denial.
It is just a game. That's it. The people who stick around appreciate it for that. It also happens to be very well polished.
This game will be around for a while and there are very few games that will rival it. I doubt any game can rival it because it was first to be casual, well polished, easy to play, simplified interface. Easy to understand.
When you start getting games that are more focuses (such as Warhammer or Conan) you just can't expect them to rival a game for "the rest of us".
Having seen many of the posts on this site it seems that the regular MMORPG.COM poster is just not the demographic that WoW is aiming for though perhaps there are viewers on this site who do like it.
People need to relax and move on. The game is here and will be around for a while.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I'll continue to play WoW until something better comes along. By 'better', I mean that the game is going to have to prove that it offers a better gaming experience in multiple ways. It can't be a simple improvement here or there, because I won't switch for a small advance. I've got epic'd 70's in WoW and still enjoy playing them.
The 'next game' is going to prove to me that there is a void that WoW doesn't fill and then show me how that game fills that void... how it provides supply after it illustrates there is actually a demand (prior to there actually being a demand).
WAR will be an utter mess nothing more. Probably enjoyable for ex-wow players and a few others.
Why do you feel that WAR will be an "utter mess?" I'm just curious.

I just tend to exaggarate ocassionaly ... a little. Next big thing commercially yeh. But it will have same mass appeal as WoW. It doesn't matter if it's PvP or PvE. Something overhyped and terribly popularized that obviously appeals to mass market will always lack quality. People don't seek quality but instant moments of joy. That's is only my personal opinion, not a fact.
I think I get your point, but we are not seeing eye to eye on wording. What you describe as "hard" is often seen as just tedious. Simply removing XP rewards from something that is a minor challenge doesn't make gameplay any more exciting or engaging. Just more tedious. Simply adding health/dps to monster tables isn't a miracle cure that makes a game challenging. Every game has that already in higher level mobs or signature/elites/etc and they ALL have the faster easier way of killing/advancing just like WoW. Most MMOs share the same exact mechanics I pointed out and are reduced to the same difficulty of combat. It doesn't matter it the monster you fights says level 37 or level 230985723 when the results are the same.
Every game has its path of least resistance that the majority of people take. Simple quests or grinding on almost zero risk monsters. It is the exact same formula for most games. Most offer greater rewards for those that want to push beyond the safe line, but it requires more skill or sometimes more people. I do however think many MMO designers are stingy with XP/Rewards for those who tackle bigger challenges.
Even after you keep saying how WoW is so easy, I don't see how that doesn't apply to almost every other game on the market that doesn't force grouping on players. I can pick up EQ2, VG, LOTRO, TR or any other title the last few years and quest/solo all the way to max level.
Where are these hard games people keep comparing to WoW that make is such easy mode?
Comments
Who said those games are wow-killers? Just because some brainless twit made a thread here how another wow-killer failed? They were never supposed to be wow-killers.
A WoW-killer could be a new toy with movable hands representing big orc with an axe by Hasbro that could eventually be improved by buying him a new axe that would look more shiny and a new piece of armor in a bit different color.
REALITY CHECK

I never expected a game without "Craft" in its name and big Blizzard logo on the box to ever beat WoW and become the ultimate wow-killer. But look, there's a new toy down there. Aceizhere, you are dead wrong wrong. Vivendi is a publically traded company. When they say 9.3 million active subscribers, they mean it. This is there defintion:
World of Warcraft's Subscriber Definition
World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees’ territories are defined along the same rules.

Ever, that goes for you as well... I highlighted the portion pertaining to China for you.
While I can not speak to the Trial subscriptions, I do know of 3 cancelled/expired accounts in my own household that were being counted as part of the 9+ million active accounts 6 plus months after being cancelled/having expired.
Just have to wonder how many other accounts are/were treated in a like fashion.
but the game makers didnt say that...
E3 2006 commentary on Vanguard from Aradune

Vanguard was *never* intended to be a mainstream game like WoW
(regardless of what fans said)
WoW is the easiest commercial mmo available
- thats why its popular, because its an "EASY mode" mmo

I would delete my 70 Hunter account in a flash if SOE released SWG classic servers.
I would also leave WoW in a second for ANY true "sandbox" game with a true player run economy and challenging crafting.
I will not hold my breath.
Would that make the game harder?
The answer is
Yes It Would!
REALITY CHECK
Hmm maybe because WOW is still fun and many of the countries outside of the USA have poorer economies thus they have cheaper older computers and WOW runs so well on old POS computers. Plus many people find more value and fun in WOW then the other games which take a greater deal of money to get running decently. Remember that many foreigners are not spoiled by all these other games. Not everyone is a MMORPG fanatics like most of us here on this website.
Would that make the game harder?

No it wouldn't. Every game already has that if you attack things a few levels more difficult than the "sweet spot". You do less damage and they do more with the net effect being what you mistake as being "harder".You miss the entire point as always. There is a sweet spot exists in every game. That is how current MMO makers balance gameplay. Simply upping some stats doesn't make the game harder as people will just downshift a level or two in the enemies they fight which is exactly what I pointed out.

WoW doesnt have high system demands so more older computers are able to it.

Flame on.

I think it's already been said.
