I'd bet real money that the people here complaining about the CU and NGE years after it happened were the same people who spammed the SOE forum with "OMG THIS GAME SUXXORS" about every bug, threatened to quit every unexpected downtime, and declared the game was doomed with every change prior to the CU or NGE.
complainers will always be complainers.

You know, I do look at the official forums occasionally. Perhaps it's time to officially change the name of SW:Galaxies to SW:Gameplay May Change ; ) LOL I find that funny, because even the new players (post Nov 15 2005) are now getting tired of the changes devs are doing to the game.
There hasn't been another MMO game good enough to replace the old SWG for me, City of Heroes was as close as it could get. Right now I'm not really playing anything, just occasionally Madden 2008.

Personally I liked Pre-NGE and Post-NGE for different reasons. However, lets not forget that both had / have flaws too. Pre-NGE was lacking even more content than Post-NGE. I played BH at the start, to me it was the only class (with exception to crafters for obvious reasons) that had class specific quests to do. And yes, it was awful for pvp due to the incredible imbalances. So, when reading posts such as this, I think some people are perhaps looking at the past with rose-tinted glasses on.
However, onto the main reason why I'm posting. The MMO market desperately needs competitors for SWG, Only then will people find closure and SWG may even change for the better because of it. I'm not sure however that ANOTHER star wars game is the answer. Maybe a familiar sci-fi setting yes, but not necessarily star wars. Otherwise, it may forever live under SWG's shadow because SWG was the first.

When are some people (SOE & LA especially!) going to understand that the old SWG was a living virtual world that created it's own content.
Linear boring progression, bah! Linear force fed quest content, pfft. A real MMORPG player craves non of those things!
As for the imbalances. Yes the old game had a lot of imbalances, but mostly because some professions simple never were finished or just plain buggy. However, when most people talk about imbalance they tend to compare professions in 1 vs. 1 dueling. The combat in the old game had a lot more depth than simple duelling, just to bad that so few saw that /sigh.

I can appreciate that you feel that pre-NGE was a virtual world. I was there. I saw the populations and I do miss them.
However, one cannot blindly ignore the fact that both EQ2, WoW and other games released since SWG all indicate that a large percentage of the MMO population enjoys lore driven quest chains and deep worldwide stories that they feel they are a part of. To deny that such a desire exists is just plain naivety.
ALL mmo's in my opinion are another form of escapism. Even moreso than watching a good film. You feel like you are stripped away from your everyday life, and are enveloped in a world which you feel you are part of. Lore / storylines / quests, call them what you will help tremendously to do that. No one can despute that WoW's lore and quest storylines are some of the best in the business.
Sure, player driven entertainment has its own allure. But people love to be told good story's. This is one of the reasons why the first three Star Wars films were such a big hit in the first place.
The MMO market has changed from grindfest loving MMO's (e.g. EQ1, SWG and AO) to quest loving MMO's. Some MMO developers have realised that shift and tried to take steps to keep up for better or for worse. MMO players who create their own content can look after themselves, but those who love stories want them to be told.
Like I said originally, pre AND post NGE SWG versions have their own unique problems. Neither is perfect by a long shot. Theres no going back, only forward. The only thing SOE can do now is give the player as much choices of things to do in SWG as possible. Whether it is quest chains, player driven content, crafting or anything else. Choice can be the saviour of any MMO.
"MMO players who create their own content can look after themselves, but those who love stories want them to be told."
For every 10 players who want to be told a story there is at least one who wants to tell a story though.
Give them the tools and motivation to do so and they will make your content for you.
The failure so far is that players who tell stories dont want to do it over and over they want to move on to new stories.. so you have to allow for the players to replay player generated content at their leasure and if its popular enough, make it a permanent part of the world.

It is possible for both of you to be right.
This was a large sandbox world where, to a large extent, player interactions defined content - the necessity to level your character to the skill capacities that you wanted, to generate income to afford and customise your home, clothes, vehicles and to protect your own faction while attacking the other.
That does not mean that there was not also room for linear quests within this world. I enjoyed the different theme parks - though I thought they were a little low level. While I intensely disliked the limited and instanced geographyt of Kashyyk - all those narrow paths after the wide open spaces of the rest of the planets - I thought some of the quests that planet introduced were excellent. However, you did not have to do those quests to con tinue enjoying the game. They were just another faced of this huge, open-ended universe.

Wrong!
Im an active $OE/NGE hater and can safely say I never used any (well trade)forums until the NGE hit. I wouldn't be on this forum if there had been no NGE. I was in game experiencing the greatest saga ever told - mine!
All the vet haters and $OE/NGE fanbois you would think would be in game if they were true to their word and actually liked the NGE. But no, they spend just as much time as us $OE/NGE haters on the SWG vet forum.

Maybe its reverse psychology.. that if SOE starts actually believing the NGE might accidentally become popular they will remove it.

Exactly my point. I loved the theme park quests. To me, there wasn't enough of them. In my opinon had SWG's devs had flooded the game with lore and quest chains it could have been a very strong contender to pull in vast numbers of subcriptions. There are countless books, magazines, cartoon offshoots whose storys could be converted into quest chains for SWG. That would certain help to "flesh out" the game.
The Legacy quest does a little of that. But only a little. You still don't feel part of the "Galactic" battle. You still get the feeling that the quest chain is "bolted on" somewhat. I just can't put my finger on what exactly is wrong with it. Maybe its because it is only ONE quest chain. No other quests, just that one with a great amount of xp given to offset the lack of other quests.
As a side note, I still don't understand why they decided to make crafting into a primary profession. I can't think of any major MMO player today that does that. This is one reason why I think pre-NGE had an edge. It had more choices in some respects but the lack of content helps to off balance that.
Are people that unpleasant and childish to want a game pulled because they don't like it? I loved the old game ... but its gone.
It's not about being childish even though some may act it. Nor is it out of anger even though some lack the communication skills to appear anything but angry.
It's out of morality and justice that not only Star Wars Galaxies deserves to fail and be closed, but also that we see the complete collapse of SOE.
We have Capitalism to thank. When you rob consumers and lie to them only to be caught in an action of WireFraud, which was committed dedicated customers, there's little satisfaction other then to see the perp get nailed.
As consumers we all have the ability to make or break a product, especially one as fragil as SWG. SOE made the decisions and enforced them upon the consumers. It is due to the mistreatment, and theft, that we, as consumers, make our decisions known.
I honestly doubt anyone sits anywhere and spends the entire day thinking about how much they hate SOE or LA. But Ill be damned, there's some pretty messed up people in this world and if there were ever a reason for someone who's just a tad bit off their rocker to hate something I'd suspect that those two corporations had giving them an excuse to start taking their meds...
But I digress: SOE is a failure and it's unfortunate for the remaining players of SWG. Since it'll be their fate to suffer the clossing of their game.
History is taught for a reason - To learn from others mistakes. These threads exist as lessons in history and there's a new class every day...

Shouldn't that be "SWG is a failure"?
Even so, I think that's wishful thinking on both accounts hehe.

Read your EULA next time. You paid X amount for the game...you got the game. You paid X amount to play on the servers...you played on the servers.
You were never sold a guarantee that the game would remain forever exactly as you wanted it to, you always had the right to cancel if it changed in a way you didn't like, and no fraud was ever committed.
If you want to throw around legal terms, try learning what they mean first.
p.s. While you're at it, you may want to look at a legal term by the name of libel...here's some case history for you.

They did steal and lie to their customers. With the Trials of Obi won expansion...you know, right before the NGE. If I remember right they were sued and had to give alot of people money back.

Wire Fraud was commited with the marketing of the Trials of ObiWan and the bait/switch of the "new game experiances". We would all be fools to think SOE returned monies out of good will.

True that the linear lore quest lines seem to appeal to a lot of people, but it certanly doesn't do it for me and I know that I'm not alone. I do realise that the market for players like me is small compared to those that like WoW/EQ2 like games, but I still think that this relative small market is significant enough to not be overlooked. It's just to bad that it was the old SWG game that was sacrificed to discover this.
Games like WoW and EQ2 only last so long for me. I think I managed to get a toon to level 30 in EQ2 and now afterwards I'm not really sure how I could have lasted that long? In the end it was just the same repetetive things, only at a higher level. However, that said I have recently been giving it a thought to return to EQ2 to try out the pvp side of EQ2. Yeah I know, I'm really bored at the moment lol.
I don't think SWG was a true escapeism game, but sure it was in there to some extent. The real driving force was that it was a community like nothing I've ever seen before. For me personally, the game also served a purpose to keep in touch with friends I used to work with. Now all of those friends I had are litterly scattered around in every corner of the world and with the common interest gone (the old SWG) we are just drifting further and further away from each other.
As for the current SWG-NGE. Whatever SOE adds, sorry I mean re-introduce, to the game is just pointless. The NGE core is just plain dull and a road to nowhere. To summarize it the NGE is only little more than a huge failure and theres nothing that can change that.
Lamest duck to a silly post. calling the kettle black?

well, guess what...the statute of limitations on wire fraud is 5 years. Now go find me one attorney in the United States who believes you have a case. You have 3 years, starting...now.

Im an active $OE/NGE hater and can safely say I never used any (well trade) forums until the NGE hit.

These threads exist as lessons in history and there's a new class every day...
well said.

Even so, I think that's wishful thinking on both accounts hehe.

silliest...post...ever
Read your EULA next time. You paid X amount for the game...you got the game. You paid X amount to play on the servers...you played on the servers.
You were never sold a guarantee that the game would remain forever exactly as you wanted it to, you always had the right to cancel if it changed in a way you didn't like, and no fraud was ever committed.
If you want to throw around legal terms, try learning what they mean first.
p.s. While you're at it, you may want to look at a legal term by the name of libel...here's some case history for you.

um...actually.
They did steal and lie to their customers. With the Trials of Obi won expansion...you know, right before the NGE. If I remember right they were sued and had to give alot of people money back.

Lamest duck to a silly post. calling the kettle black?
Wire Fraud was commited with the marketing of the Trials of ObiWan and the bait/switch of the "new game experiances". We would all be fools to think SOE returned monies out of good will.
Seriously, you do not deliver. Nice try though.
Actually, the point is they absolutely didn't "have to"...but they chose to anyways.
true they tryed alot of stuff to stop the cancelations lol lol lol lol
However, one cannot blindly ignore the fact that both EQ2 and WoW both showed that a large percentage enjoy lore driven quest chains and deep worldwide stories that they feel they are a part of. To deny that such a desire exists is just plain naivety.
ALL mmo's in my opinion are another form of escapism. Even moreso than watching a good film. You feel like you are stripped away from your everyday life and are enveloped in a world which you feel you are part of. Lore / storylines / quests, call them what you will help tremendously to do that. No one can despute that WoW's lore and quest lines are some of the best in the business.

To summarize it the NGE is only little more than a huge failure and theres nothing that can change that.
well, guess what...the statute of limitations on wire fraud is 5 years. Now go find me one attorney in the United States who believes you have a case. You have 3 years, starting...now.
