I don't know how any of this is news. We all learend from tenton's interview after the firings that: the entire world was populated and built within the year before release; Smed was not around for whatever reason; the managers in charge did nothing to help the game, nor did they know anything about management; the team was inexperienced and shouldn't be handling a project of this magnitued; that the they used no proper coding language; etc.
This is simply a rehash of things long ago fleshed out. The author seems to have a chip on his shoulder and to my (reading between the lines) is that the chip revovles around his/her inability to get a decent job due to VG's failure and his role in it, and his shameful silence in not telling the public how much they were lied to. This author is a crock, he/she stood silently by and watched the hype occuring on the game and did nothing to negate it. He's as guilty as Smed in letting this trash reach the world in the state it was in...the entire development team at Sigil is as guilty and culpable on the fraud they released.
Tried out the game for that "free till Jan 20" promotion. Still not worth playing imho. I simply can't get into the game, the avatar bugs, the quest bugs, the empty world, and so on. I ended this game with a bad vibe and it probably colors my opinion and experience coming back but that's just me. SOE has made great stride in the game, but its not a game that will appeal to me further.
I don't know or even care about what is true or false in this "interview".
Vangaudr was delivered extremely buggy, unfinished, and badly thought out.
Brad Mc Quaid spent the last year of development roaming FOH and several fansites telling how good the gamle would be, what idea they were implementing etc.
my opinion is that Mc Quaid indeed had very few contact with the team, he was just expressing his thoughts about the MMo of his dreams, thinking vanguard would magically become that thing.
When you read Mc Quaid posts, who wouldnt have liked what vanguard was promised to be? it was just like DnL... on paper, it was a wow-killer.
I'm sure this posts is 75% truth, 25% lies.
My addiction History: >> EQ1 2000-2004 - Shaman/Bard/Wizard/Monk - nolife raid-whore >> WoW 2004-2009 + Cataclysm for 2 months - hardcore casual >> Current status : done with MMO, too old for that crap.
Anyway, enough of my blabbering. The most shocking reality that I don't think anyone really ever understood is that Vanguard was made (exclusively the design staff, I should say) COMPLETELY by amateurs.
The game that exists now was designed in a single year by people with 0 experience.
And yet when the game was released there were all those hardcore players on Forums (like this one) claiming how great the game was, how they weren't seeing any of the bugs, and how much fun they were having.
All over a game designed by amateurs.
Just goes to show you how some people, esp. hardcore MMORPG players, are willing to eat any sewage and tell themelves how great it tastes.
Good games sell themselves. There was a reason why MMORPGs until recently only sold to a niche market and never attracted large number of gamers. Hardcore players can keep whining about how the genre is evolving while they keep eating the same slop that regular gamers were smart enough never to touch.
Now we know, all it takes is a bunch of amateurs to crank out a piece trash to make them happy. At least Developers are finally realizing that catering to them is the path to failure.
They never stopped, either. Go into any recent thread in the VG forums to see them still in action.
Silly, If I would come out with all my experiences when I worked for 10tacle Studios on Elveon game, I guess it would be similiar whine to this one. And the Elveon will be a great hit.

Wow, I really thought bad about the process of making VG, but even tho I felt I was already very sceptic, it was even MUCH more worse in reality! I never thought such a level of unprofessional action could be possible. But then, the entire quest layout and many other things just SHOW in what short time they were pasted together.
VG a game made by amateurs in one year hasty work. Great lord.
People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert
Obviously that's no excuse for what happened and the money that was wasted, but I think perhaps a few of the people who did actually put some work in, showed some potential talent.
You could always look at the flip side... It's not bad for 1 years work by amateurs. Obviously that's no excuse for what happened and the money that was wasted, but I think perhaps a few of the people who did actually put some work in, showed some potential talent.
It also explains why the game has so much of an already been done feel. They were rushed and not very experienced so they just made it like things they'd seen before. They didnt have time to figure out ways to make the game new and exciting so they just re-did EQ or WoW style gameplay.

I could care less if people want to torture themselves and play VG. People like to cut themselves also and I have no problem with that. The problem is lying to other people about how great it is and how everything is fixed when it is far from being fixed.

A game released from new developers to the scene is automatically a bad game, and can't possible be thougth of as a good game by those that likes it.

This is very common for Vanguard and Everquest. It's basically a cult following to their games. You can't take them seriously.

I was a beta tester for VG, played at launch, got to 50, quit, came back, did everything new, quit again.
The game has improved a lot under SOE, but it's nowhere near the standard it should be at. Too big, too much empty space, to much wasted space, too much content at the wrong levels, badly thought out time sinks, badly thought out loot distribution, very badly balanced classes.

Before VG gets to a level where I would return again, they will need to gut and rebuild at least half of the content in the game to suit the top heavy population and to stream line the leveling experience so people aren't spread so far apart they can't even form groups.
Last I heard Brad was still at SOE, can anyone confrim this? If its true then its a damn shame.
I doubt it.
He was supposed to be some kind of visionary consultant or somesuch, but it doesn't sound right that SOE would pay Brad's most certainly above average salary to just so that he could give ideas while they lay off another half of the original staff.
I doubt he ever did any kind of consulting in the first place, that was talk just to pacify the consumers who subscribed due to the "vision".
The post made the news over at Blue's News. Thats not the interesting part though besides for me finding out the actual name of the angry dev, which I guess they researched to confirm he was who he claimed he was in the post. If you read the comments section attached to the news item Derek Smart had something to say about it. I am going to assume that the readers here know who he is. If not just google him.

I've said it before, the industry is run by a bunch of pirates and cowboys, professionalism doesn't exist in most game development companies and most publishers only think of the money.
Someone was saying recently that more games get cancelled before release than are actually released, so makes you wonder just how crap those games must've been and how insane people were to back them. The issue is though, those with money don't really know anything about games, so they trust the developers, and the developers don't know anything about business and just piss around for a few years.
Glad I work for a publisher, least my company won't go bankrupt, even if they don't actually care about the players.
I've said it before, the industry is run by a bunch of pirates and cowboys, professionalism doesn't exist in most game development companies and most publishers only think of the money.
Oh my god... they are really thinking only about money? And I hoped they care about ME and a world peace and a poor birth rate in Aljaska.
Not true, to say someone jacked drugs or uses drugs and there is truth to it in no way places anyone in danger of a lawsuit when you say so.
To label someone with no history of such an act or abuse and they file a defamation of character suit even then they have to prove or show they could most likely prove emotional ditress, lack of sleep, etc etc.
We live in a soft world where fraudulent lawsuits have people running scared to say whats on their mind.
This country still has freedom of speech and opinions. If the stuff in that letter revealed drug habits or likenesses of people that are somewhat close to reality cudos to the poster for letting the truth out.
The day I can't say this and that sucks, or so and so is an Ass, etc etc, is the day this country has truly failed its people.
For the record I love this country (USA) but its soft with soft politicians and there is new lawsuit abuse cases doumented so feel free to be a man and say what the truth is no matter how painful it might sound to your delicate senses.
I think he was referring to companies caring more about money than having professional standards by creating quality products. Example: releasing a busted broken game so they "can start seeing some revenue".
whatever the case maybe, or whatever may have happened.. Drugs, money, sex, whatever..
I'd STILL like to say thanks to that guy for even giving his time to help make this game that I am having alot of fun with. No, it's not a brand new porsche, or even a billion dollar lottery ticket, but to me it IS fun, so despite everything that has happened in the past for it to be able to get into MY hands, I am enjoying the product..
I'm glad sony did not just completely scrap the game and are actually trying to do something with it...
This whole story is like Tom Coughlin and the Giants last year... His "fair-weather" team ripped him a new one everytime they got beat, but kept their mouths shut when the ship was sailing..
Kicking a dead dog and screaming at it, doesn't do a whole lot..
(common reply: "well finding out how the dog died means a lot though.")
While thats true, i think there were better ways of doing it other than insulting the whole situation and its cast...
They hyped this game like crazy but I could see from beta that the game just wasn't doing well. I made the mistake of buying the game only to cancel my subscription b4 the free month was up. This was partly b/c they had no free trial.. and for good reason why give a free trial of a game that is crap when we can sucker some people to buy it for 50 bucks ( now like 10 dollars).
My personal experience of this game from release and when I tried to come back to it this last month was.
-Glitchy Combat
-Horrendus Lag
-Hours and Hours to find a group for a non-instanced dungeon only to fight placeholders when you get there.
-A tedious crafting system that was not what was promised and absolutely no fun.
-Long leveling times that offered little rewards when you did level.
-Human Characters looked like Ken the barbie doll.....
All in all I paid soe 65 bucks and got nothing out of it.

Oh my god... they are really thinking only about money? And I hoped they care about ME and a world peace and a poor birth rate in Aljaska.
I think he was referring to companies caring more about money than having professional standards by creating quality products. Example: releasing a busted broken game so they "can start seeing some revenue".whatever the case maybe, or whatever may have happened..
Maybe he can get a job helping Derek develop his next flop
