  • daarcodaarco Member UncommonPosts: 4,276

First i was like "they are adding that now? There will be years before a release". But then i rember all i hear from other betas, every patch includes more sound, quests, animations, buildings and so on. In all betas i have been in, i think most of them should have waited a bit. Many features was always added in the last second.

So now i feel calm again.

pretty crappy dev journal. What can I say? No screenshots.. No video.. No mention of Beta  :(

why do they always make it out to seem like doing a dev journal is TONS of work??

"I skipped last week's journal and was almost forced to do the same this week, trying to get back into the swing of things and catching up with a lot of backed up work."

  • daarcodaarco Member UncommonPosts: 4,276

    Yep its weird.

Either its something very fishy, or they are 100% working to get a game done. And those updates is something they just do for fun. Remember, some years they didnt do any updates at all. But in late 2006, Tasos said they would try to get someone to write something now and then.

    A bit short in length but still some interesting tidbits;

    - An invite to Q/A. He didn't specify what forums, but I'm sure Warcry and Forumfall are sure bets :)

"Overall, we have a near complete implementation of the game, speaking of the technology and our feature list."

Will we see beta Q1 and release Q4 2008 ? Vapor, scam, beta, release, whatever your religion, you will probably get an answer in 2008 :)

"The Darkfall AI resembles Quake bots in the Darkfall context of course."

Is the traditional roles of tank, healer and dps finally going to change ?

"Right before and right after the holiday break we showed the game to a couple of groups of high profile industry veterans. They were very enthusiastic about it and this gave us a big morale boost. "

Hmmm...they didn't keep Asp a secret. Why would they keep this a secret ?

it sounds so great... really it does...

    but....

    when?!

    Throw us a bone.

I'm sure they are hesitent to set any solid dates, as thus far throughout the DF history so many dates have come and gone past without them actually meeting the goals of those dates...

    I still have hope.

Darkfall, if released, will be a great experiment.

I truly hope it turns out to be a success and a game worth playing... though my confidence is not high.

As always, I will continue to watch this game closely and will continue to *attempt* to be a voice of reason in arguments between fanbois and haters :)

Beta might be close since they say they have a working version. They should though release more info like after testing we will be starting open beta or what not.

I know at least some of the devs are norwegian from Razorwax. It isn't often games come into the limelight. Hadn't Funcom been on the stock exchange, I doubt they would have gotten much press here in Norway at all.

Most deacent MMO takes between 5-7 years to develop. All other numbers e foolish drems of fast development. And i know some say WoW was made in only four years......but thats BS to.  And then include the skillsystem and handcrafted world, that all other developers think is to much work to create (lazy bastards) then you understand it will take time for a small indie MMO developer.

OMFG everyone. Give it up already. I was following this game, but that was back in 2001 and 2002. Once Dark Age of Camelot released, I was already done following this bunch of BS.

7 years later, you guys are STILL drooling over every BS word these guys speak and you STILL don't even know of a promised release date???

Give it up. Just some good, sound advice people.

Ok, if you give me some better MMO to wait for.

Better information for the public sector would probably quiet the community down, both nay sayers and fans. Lack of information can hurt any game out there, and most people dont want to here any information a company has to release unless its a release date (though this hasnt done the company any good in the past) or at the very least a beta date. which also hasnt been effective.

It would be nice to see another game not fail, there has been way to many of late last few years.

I agree that we need more information. But the ones waiting for DF have survived many MMOs and none have been close to offering some real competion for the Darkfall gameplay. And the DF devs know that, so does the community.

So by natural selection, most DF waiters have hardened and can stand the DF devs lack of hype and PR. and some have last faith and just troll to let out steam. If the trolls have waited many years......they must really be hardcore waiters to : )

I would not get overly optimistic about that line. We have seen many like it before.

    Dev Journal #12

"Technically we're ready for a beta test today, and every day that goes by, we get more ready."

    Dev Journal #13

"Today (Friday) we have a new Darkfall version up, which is almost feature complete."

"If there's an interesting development it's that we've narrowed in on a specific beta date and we should be announcing it very soon, right after we make sure that a couple of conditions are met."

Only problem with this theory is they said they have a 'beta ready' version 10 months ago too. Believe if you want. I'll believe it when I see it.

Oh and the folks who keep saying that it takes 5-7 years to develop a 'decent' MMORPG

    Ultima Online: 2 years
    EVE: 3 years
    EQ1: 3 years
    EQ2: 4 years
    WOW: 3 years
DAOC: 2 years (Widely regarded as the most stable and complete launch of an MMORPG to date)
    AO: 3 years
    SWG: 3 years

That's just a short list of "A" titles that took LESS than 5 years to develop. Of the FEW titles that I can think of that took longer than that to develop only 1 comes to mind that is any good: Lord of the Rings Online. Why? Because the title was originally planned in 1999 but Sierra lost rights to produce the game due to multiple delays, concept fights with the Tolkien Foundation and a few other issues. Eventually the title was given to Turbine who did a complete 'start over from scratch' design of the game. From the time Turbine took over the project to the time of release was 4 years. That's from a COMPLETE restart from scratch. And LOTRO had a flawless launch and is another very polished game right at release.

To be honest? I can't think of any MMORPG that's taken longer than 5 years to develop other than LOTRO... anyone know of one?

I'm a DAOC fan, and I have to correct this myth that seems to be popping up lately.  Yes, DAOC launched very smoothly, but it was far from a "complete" game.

In their own words " Because we put off doing the technical designs for the interior spaces for so long, in the end we simply didn't get enough of them done. The game launched with only three capital cities (one per Realm) and about 15 dungeons."

    www.gamasutra.com/features/20020213/firor_pfv.htm

Facinating read by the way, seems they really made the game in about 18 months due to budget constraints.

I also recall reading about the game in CGW when it released, and although they gave great props to its launch, they did mention it was missing a some character levels (I think you could only get to level 40 at first) and the RVR frontiers and Battlegrounds were put in some time shortly after launch.  Unfortunately I couldn't find a link to it.

Not saying they did a bad thing, but people might want to keep this in  mind with the upcoming launches, expect some content to be missing for a while.

Therefore, DF might also have to take the same approach and release a subset of features at launch.
