this i hope is a RUMOR, and that it is NOT LIVE for xbox if it IS on console, if it IS on console, i won't be playing this. sorry. not my bit to play an mmo rpg on a FLIPPN CONSOLE.
Well, from my recollections from when I pre-ordered this two years ago, and counting, it was going to be released for PC and for Xbox 360. I seem to recall that both comunity's will be playing in the same environment. Ive been looking foward to tearing the flesh from console gamers. And I beleive they are in for a nasty suprise. I hope I am remembering it correctly.
Relax Exo, its for the x360 and has been said to release in September of 08'.
The console users will have thier own servers. How do I know this? I dont, Im taking an educated guess and heres how I came to that conclusion.
1. The features available to PC users will not be the same for console users.
2. The code sent between the end user and server for a console is slightly different than a pc.
3. PC servers go live in March, Consoles in Sep (if theres no delays for consoles). They will not suddenly have console users flood existing and established servers with new server code for console users.
4. Console users will have thier own servers, and probably only be accessed through the live service. It will be entirely seperate from the PC users.

There will come a day when games are console only. The demands on devs to develop for all the different 'systems' out there will become more trouble than it is worth.
Think of it this way. Why would you want to develop a game that has to run on anything from a FX5700 through an 8800GTS? On a P4 3.0 though a Q6600? Think of all the possiblities in between. Single, dual, quad cores. Hyper threading, no hyper threading. AMD vs Intel. How much ram, what speed ram? Which OS? Overclocked? These some of the issues developers for PC games have to deal with that they do not have to deal with when dealing with the xbox/ps lines. Not to mention, the xbox runs far less than a top line gaming rig, so you have a wider market.

A few points:
1) There are still genre's of games that are next to unexplored on the console and will probably remain so due to controller issues and/or adaptability.
2) As the poster above me stated, you reach a far broader audience with a PC game than with a console game
3) You have more options, plus you can make prettier games (Thank you Crysis, for finally proving that Consoles can't handle modern-day graphics like a top of the line PC can).
That's just a few I can see right off the bat and I'm pretty sure there are more reasons for the developers themselves. Feel free to point me to errors in my views, but those are the things that I see which would delay or nullify your theory. Consoles are not the end-destination of games. Simply too limited for that.
Right now, I'm one of those houses without a console. Why? Because I can get games on my computer. That doesn't mean that I don't see the trend and the reasoning for it to happen.
Look at the quanity of games coming out for PC vs Consoles these days. PC gaming is really a niche market over all and right now, really only a small selection of games are being targeted to the PC.
It is happening and it isn't going to be a wake up one morning and poof all games for PCs are gone, it is an ongoing process and with MMOs testing the water, that is likely to be one less genre for the computer market.
Look at the shelf space in stores being allocated to pc games vs console games.
Historically, the main aspect holding the consoles back was the graphics and input, but when you have xbox 360s and PS3s putting up the quality graphics they do and the ability to pug in input devices, that gap is closing fast.
Development time will be faster, QA time less. It is a business decision and once those games that have historically been PC only really show that they can not only compete, but thrive in the console world, the amount of games coming out for the PC will only decrease. Too many logical reasons for it to (unfortunately).
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not one in favor of this, but just because one does not like what one sees as a foreseeable event, doesn't mean one sticks their head in the sand hoping it doesn't happen.
Errr, just one thing....now that might be a local phenomenom, but when I walk into my local Electronics store, there is just as much shelf space dedicated to PC Games as there is to Console games.
Don't make the mistake and see the different shelves for the different consoles and add them together because all in all, you have the same games on the different consoles, with a few selected exceptions (like Final Fantasy on PS, Mario on Nintendo etc.).
I really have yet to see the trend that you talk about. I am seeing PC games being churned out by the industry in huge quantities and I am an avid reader of one of the local gaming magazines. Yes, of course the console is "invading" more or less and the market growing quickly, but it is far from actually making anything happe, at least from my point of view.
Now as I said, this is a personal opinion based on my experiences here in my area of living. It might be different wherever you live, but I'm just saying, I don't see that trend.
And as for graphics, I still laugh really hard about all the whining from the console players when they heard the Crysis Dev's basically say: "Sorry chaps, consoles are just not powerful enough to run this game, we'd have to scale the quality down considerably" (not an actual quote, but captures what was said).

I live in Chicago and I can say without doubt that there are several GameStops that dont even sell PC games anymore. Go to a place like Target, WalMart, Meijers, K-Mart and they all have decent selections for console and pitiful ones for PC.
Now places like BestBuy and Circuit City still seem to be holding strong but I've definitely seen a decline in PC support (game wise) in game stores.
this i hope is a RUMOR, and that it is NOT LIVE for xbox if it IS on console, if it IS on console, i won't be playing this. sorry. not my bit to play an mmo rpg on a FLIPPN CONSOLE.
Then it is a local thing apparently. *shrug* I'll scourge the web later to see if I can dig up some numbers concerning games for PC and games for Consoles, maybe that'll shed some light on the whole thing.
I dont know.. Here in Portland there is more self space for PC games then there is for console games. This goes for GameStop and you cant go into a Electroincs store without seeing 2-3 long rolls of computer game selfs.
Also another thing worth pointing out is that alot of PC games are moving to a online distrubution method. As it cuts the middle man out of the picture. Ever look at direct2drive or Steam lately. They are packed with loads of pc games. Even GameStop has a online distrubution for PC game straight on there website.
Anyone that thinks PC games are on a decline are smokeing some crack.
down here, the local game stores may have 25/30 PC boxes on the shelves and most of those are old titles, very little new stuff. If you want that, you have to special order it. And I'm in a metropolitian area, so it isn't like there aren't alot of people here (over 2 million in the two county area), but every EB/Gamestop/Best Buy is like that. I'd say that anywhere from 75-85% of the game area is dedicated to console gaming, not PC gaming.
Yes, you are still getting games for the PC, I'm not denying that. As you said, there are a few areas (mainly MMOs and MP RPGs) that haven't really crossed that gap, which is why I don't have a console and still do all my gaming on a computer (and will until that changes )
But even with my dicussions with some of the local EB managers, they've seen the same trend. Console gaming is slowly taking over the market. Granted, it is REAL slow and I'm sure there is some nostalgistic reasons for that.
I think my local best buy has 4 rows of PC software (2 faces per row) and only one facing is PC games. The other 7 are Office application, educational software, OSes, etc. It used to be 3 or 4 faces was PC games 5 or so years ago.
Right now, the only real games I see coming out for PCs are things like 1st person shooters (which are often co published on consoles), High grapical games like Crysis (which my pc wouldn't run anyways ), Multiplayer RPGs (that utilize alot of player based content mainly, things like NwN) and MMORPGs which until AoC, only FF has tried to cross over. As console techonology continues to advance, more and more of these games will test the waters and eventually leave the PC arena for the world of cheaper game development
Then it is a local thing apparently. *shrug* I'll scourge the web later to see if I can dig up some numbers concerning games for PC and games for Consoles, maybe that'll shed some light on the whole thing.
Trust me, I'm not a fan of the trend. I do have a 360 but it's pretty much limited to playing sports games. And I'll gladly give that up when sports game makers realize that PC gamers like to play sports games too. I'm so sick of Madden on PC being held back to last gen console standards.
Like I said though, even the GameStops that do have PC games in my area keep them all in a cabinet behind the counter. You just have to ask to see if they have anything in.
It is true that downloading is gaining popularity. I've done it with a few games but I'm still not a huge fan. For whatever reason there's a level of comfort that comes with having the discs.
Ahhh, Raston, but you made another point that is, to many gamers, extremely important.
The ability to modify and to adapt the game to their own purpose/liking. The Modding community is not small and many games, especially, as you pointed out, the Multiplayer Games and Shooters, have many people who use agame to develope new content for themselves, their community, something that is, as far as I'm aware of, absolutely impossible on a console.
I am not absolutely disagreeing with you. Yes, the console market has been growing and yes, it may be a "threat" to the PC market, but in the end, I don't think the PC will ever be fully driven from the playing field. There are too many (if small) factors that the console simply cannot provide....yet. And some of them, I don't see ever crossing over to the console at all, like modding and the sort.

Sorry Monkey Boy, when you have an understanding of how a typical virtual world works with regards to MMO servers, you can make educated speculation using logic and reason without "wishing" for anything. If you have anything to bring to the table that directly contradicts the statement I made, then please share.
I honestly could care less, I do not own any consoles at all. Just trying to take the doom and gloom you hold onto so dearly down a few notches.
Ok here are some stats. These are all taken from Gamestats as its the only place I could get a good reading of games. (Over 50k games are covered by gamestats)
PC Games: 12337
PS3: 693
Xbox360: 958
WII: 841
GameCube: 942
Xbox: 1550
PS2: 4396
PC Games: 12337
Total Console: 9380
Now it is worth noteing I did leave out the Classic consoles from the listing. Its entirely possible that combined with the classic number the Console games will be more then the PC Games.
But interesting information is that there are alot of games released that target a group of consoles. Should a game be counted 3 times for consoles even though its effective the exact same game on all 3 consoles? Or should it be counted as just 1 game.
Its also worth pointing out that this does not include Mac Games & Linux games. This also doesnt count mud text based games that are still a major popular playtime for people. Doesnt include Free to play games. This is nothing more then boxed based games.
Its also worth pointing out the list above does include up and coming games that have a TBA release date.
Aren't those stats kind of slanted then? I mean, PC had quite the head start on consoles. Not to mention, how relevant are these numbers. If you want to compare the two, you really have to look at sales.
And I don't think every game thats developed for both platforms results in a dumbed down experience. First it depends on which way the game is ported. A game like Half Life 2 was created for PC and ported to console, where a game like RB6:Vegas was done the opposite.
Even so, the KOTOR games stick out in my head as fantastic games with great controls that were ported from console to PC.
I don't understand why one has to be better than the other. Really they are different markets and if anything, I would think they will only help eachother in the long run.

This was a rather funny post lol.
And to be honest, I would rather play WOW with kids than most of you b!tching ppl...
but... would you rather have no arms?

A choice of two evils? hmm... I think I choose to keep my legs and arms, and forget about AoC and WoW. Looking forward to the real war hehe....

I'd have to agree
the fact this game is on the xbox kinda ruins it for me as well.
the amount of pc games that have been ruined because of consoles ablity to dumb down gameplay and grahpics is more than I care to remember.
