PC-console releases have never really hurt an MMO. The big difference between the two in FFXI was graphical resolution and lack of a mouse on the PS2 version. Honestly though, who uses a mouse in FFXI anyway?
FFXI supported (read: practically required) a keyboard via USB on the PS2, and does on the 360 as well, I'm sure. No worries about communication or control there.
And skill? In any PC MMO that's been released up till now? Ha. Ha. Ha.
Kids and morons are everywhere. Go play WoW, go play GW, go play anything. You will find them.
Stop overreacting and go back to your hidey hole. And I look forward to ruining play with bedtime, but not 'cause I'm some kid. I've got that little thing called a Real Job, along with it's good buddy Commute.
Oh, and yeah. I didn't read the last four or so pages of uh.. educated debate. Just figured I'd be honest.
-------------------------- Society: Reaching new lows every day.
I must say that I've never been a PC gamer and I never will be a PC gamer. PC gamers suck, and they're arrogant enough to try and rule over console gamers. By the way, just built my first PC back in November of 2007, can't wait to play AOC on it. And, I just bought Crysis today ... SWEET!! PC GAMERS RULE BABY!! Yeah, it's pretty cool. I am disappointed that everyone would make such a big deal about playing with 360 gamers. I personally will be playing this on 360 and PC, and if it wasn't coming to 360 I wouldn't play because that's where all my friends are. I played FFXI (only MMO I've played) for the 360 and the PC gamers were awesome to party with, and I asked guys if they could tell I was playing on a console ... they had NO idea. NO FREAKIN IDEA!! Anyone who plays on consoles, plug a usb keyboard in to communicate and some of my friends even plug in a mouse.
Personal Opinion ... its NO big Deal!! Also, why not have 360 servers, PC servers, and combined servers ... for me I'm all about a combined server!
Im just wondering if we will have to pay for XBL and conan?Or if microsoft will work some deal out with them.
Will probably be the same as the other online ppm games and you will have a separate account for both.
As an aside. I was wondering quite how things like combat complexity would get dumbed down by a console, especially when I keep considering things like shooters... They account for target shots and effects in many modern games, and location of the shot ends up mattering allot. That has absolutely nothing to do with what system you are on, just as well the ability to sneak up on someone and kidney shot them or stab them in the back has nothing to do with what system you are on. Either way you are walking up and using an ability.
The great thing about using a controller? Radial Menus! Without doing anything you can have eight things bound to the 360s Dpad, four away from a whole quickbar. What else, you can make it so those A, B, X, Y buttons open up radial menus that you press the Dpad quickly for!. Or you can make a combat chain that you line up abilities in and press a button to activate as you strafe and weave about your oponent and hack at him.
Point being. You can't look at the amount of buttons the thing has and assume that people can't come up with a way to do more with it. Also to note, the great thing about the PS2, PS3, and 360...they all can use the keyboard/mouse...not sure about the PS2 with th e mouse but both next gen consoles can use a mouse too.
Not to sound rude, but honestly if someone can't find a way to make an involved and complex game on a console that's just as enjoyable and well paced as a PC game, then they're kinda an idiot...

You may think cross-platform development is not a problem, but I assure you it is. If you have to develop something for a platform that has a capacity of X and another that has a capacity of Y, the end product has to work on both X and Y. That's an obejctive fact. This means, by definition, that Age of Conan's development will be limited by console limitations. Which means that the consolization of this arcade game will do for the Age of Conan concept we've been sold what cross-platform produced Thief 3 did for the Thief games, what the last Deus Ex game did to that series and what Oblivion did to the Elder Scrolls series. That is, dumb it down to simple button mashing, simplistic inventory interfaces, and other arcade game click-and-shoot features. Maybe this is your cup of tea. Maybe you're so modern you don't even realize that there is a difference between video games and computer games. You can keep your console game. I'm not touching it, and I bet I'm not alone. I'm not helping what's killing my hobby.
My thoughts exactly, I will be cancelling , I knew there was talk about xbox conversions, but the poster here makes a good point. I have bought 3 recent single player games that were also released on the xbox 360, all of which are so simplified at this point they are just not fun anymore.
Sorry console gamers but a few things I have noticed sense owning a 360 and a PC. Games are a heck of allot shorter in game play (time it takes to finish a game). The dumbed down interfaces and controls are made more simplistic for consoles for obvious reasons. Anything with the idea of going to console or being developed console first have always had that (as post quoted above) X and Y must work. To do this , means simplifying, in the end means crappy game play. Finally whats with the 60 dollar price tag on a 360 game and people are paying it? That is a shock sense most of these games give you 20 hours of gameplay and MP to fill in the rest, I guess MP is worth 60 bucks. In the day, one could say " ya, I am buying this I will get easily 120 hours of gameplay and it's cheaper then a movie and dinner". now its "ya, I won't buy that game, I will get more entertainment out of a movie and dinner then a 20 hour game".. at least it's coming to that and I hope it comes sooner then later. Eh I am sure there are people that loves this new approch but like many I am not one of them. As much as this hurts to say it, looks like warhammer for me :P , dam.
Edit: I seen that leaked vid and now the annoucment of another push back, nothing here that makes me want to go out and buy it. Also the veil of rescent secracy that has come about this title in the last year or so is another reason. Eh who knows, they might pull a magic rabbit out of their ass, but as this point , I highly doubt it. All titles I have seen recently in the last few years have delays for one reason, cross-platforms.
Originally posted by oakae Hmmm I can't say anything about AoC since I haven't played it but for a game like WoW, using a controller would severely gimp a player instead of benefiting them.
Originally posted by vickykol When this was first announced a few years ago a number of people on the AoC forums had a lively discussion about this topic. I was one of the folk who had a problem with it, and I lost a lot of interest because of this as well as the delays in release. My concerns were with the awkwardness of some games that seek to be console friendly, including FF XI and Oblivion. Others were concerned that there would be a combat advantage of one or the other platform.
I will try the open beta, but I am less enthusiastic.
I too share the fear of consoling, actually combined servers are my biggest fear about AoC for the reasons quoted above. Especially controls and interface are important to me, as are options for customization (mods, macros, etc). While I have no problem with there being a console version of the game out there it is the combined servers (or game version) that worries me, I just cannot see how you can fairly balance the game and it's features on such different platforms. As stated above many games have tried that, they used the lowest denominator and created products that can only be described as inferior (at least from PC gamer standpoint). MMOs are meant to be played way more then traditional games (hence the subscription fees) and if I am being constantly annoyed by the way I control my character, the interface (lack of slots, lack of customization options, oversimplification of inventory and other in game screens (see Oblivion *shudder*)) I know that game will not hold my interest for long, no matter how awesome it looks.
And what about patches, content upgrades and whatnot? While I am aware that modern consoles support most usb devices, I just cannot see AoC for xbox actually require mouse+keyboard+hd to play.
On the other hand kids do not bother me that much, there is no way a popular online game can be kid free, and to be honest in my online time I have met some very mature kids and some damn childish adults (altough I do agree about the whole bedtime/my-mom-wants-me-to-do-this-now-kkthnxbye issue).
All in all the more I think about cross platforming the less excited I am about the game, and this is the main reason why I will not be preodering. I guess we will not know for sure till the game is out (on both platforms), perhaps AoC will be the first game out there that got the multiplatforming right.
