So far this game is awesome. I love the quests, and the fact that I actually have to think during them. I love the combat, its fast, fun, and exciting. I've grouped a little bit and that was a lot of fun too.

I don't see why this game gets such a bad rap. I mean sure its heavily instanced, and there isnt much exploration but as a game it is hella fun.

    My thoughts exactly LOL!

In all fairness, some of the "bad rap" comes from it's own mistake of having a pretty light content level at release...sadly, a lot of people have no idea that it's been doubled since then.

EXACTLY! And the thing is I am having more fun than I've had in an MMO since EQ1. I mainly have been soloing though because I don't play for long stretches (my girlfriend lives a block away =P so she demands my full attention) but I've grouped quite a few times and its all been a lot of fun.

Now, the game does have it's faults, just like any other but they are few and far between in my eyes. It basically reminded me of LOTRO only fun. I played LOTRO for a little while, but got bored really fast. This game has a lot more action than any MMO I have played thus far and that is a good thing!

The trial is a huge boon to DDO, IMO.

I really question any game who doesn't have WoW like numbers that isn't offering one.

Ha finnaly some with some sense about good game. DDO rules and it is best on line game ever! And for all who loves it: Live long and prosper!

The instancing in DDO is a double egded sword.   Without it you would not have the awesome DM narrations and pathing.

The combat mechanics are fare superior to anyting I can think of currently availble for online gaming.

The main downfall is what feels like a lack of dynamic content and a persistant world.

I just started the free trial and so far I kind of like it. I like the depth of character development and I think the dungeons are very well done.

I have not grouped yet as i have tried a couple of different characters to get a feel for their differences (Wizard, ,rogue, ranger).

So far my only complaint is that the world seems a bit smallish (tho I understand there are large open outdoor areas)

My other gripes is that I have a the great ability to get magic items of no absolute worth to my character (My mage got 2 magic 2 handed swords lol)

Soling is a bit on the easy side. XP gain seems slow (I actually dont mind that..well not yet anway)

I may pay for a sub (still debating...)

Trust me, if you haven't grouped yet (which means you haven't done Waterworks) you're still in the Harbor...which is only about 5% of the city of Stormreach...which is only about 10% of the scope of the game.  Lots more to see.  Also, those are all introductory quests so they are definitely a bit easier, but try running them on normal (even if you're solo'ing) or even hard for more exp and more challenge.  Loot, well...it's D&D brother, it's a random loot table just like the PnP game, but you'll have no shortage of shiny stuff you can use soon.

DEFINITELY start grouping though, just for the experience of it...it's a whole different game, and this is definitely a game built with grouping at it's core.

p.s. Bear in mind, while grouping you still get the exact same amount of experience and loot you do when soloing...probably more exp and loot because you can enter the quests at a harder difficulty which scales both.

People should never listen to detractors, especially the unenlightened ones on this board. Try games for yourselves! I'm glad the OP did.  DDO is a fine game, and I'd play it if I didn't already have two other games subbed.

The combat system is arguably one of the best in online games. It's a system I wish Turbine would port over to LOTRO.

I tried DDO and it wasn't really my cup of tea. But having said that, the game is fun, entertaining and plays well. For those who play DDO, I can see why you do.

thanks for the tips - I will prolly do some grouping over the weekend.

I just downloaded the trial myself and gave it a go for the first time.

Im literally no where in the game and I already love it. I don't understand WTF everyone is talking about?!?

Seriously its so fluid, the graphics are nice, the combat is WAY and I mean WAY better than something like WoW (not trying to pick on WoW but its the game I have the most experience with. I actually do/did enjoy my time there).

I don't understand why this don't have a higher player base. Furthermore, everything I read says the developers gave open adventure areas and so forth... so they put in the key pieces it was missing from launch IMO.

I dunno, so far it seems great but maybe Im in for a rude awaking come max level....?? If it keeps playing this way though, Turbine will be getting my credit card and sub. I wish more folks would give it a chance instead of the general mentality of "it sucks".

  • VincenzVincenz Member Posts: 1,498

Well, DDO suffered from a pretty underwhelming launch (don't get me wrong, I started at launch and still play LOL!).  Very light content, many bugs, "missing classes", etc. and it immediately got a bad word of mouth reputation.  Unfortunately that's tough to overcome, although the devs have done everything right to do just that.

I see more and more good press, good results from trial accounts, and more new players all the time though...so I think and hope it's working!

    HAVE FUN IN STORMREACH!

One of the things that turned me off from this game at launch was the lack of soloing. Now that might not have actually been the case but it seemed that every review i read pretty much said you had to group most of the time and that was kind of a deal breaker for me (especially after Wows raiding)

I think DDO is a great game (I'm liking it much more than LOTRO) I am considering subscribing to it as a time killer before the WAR guild beta starts.

Well, I posted over in the Pub about this as well, but DDO has added a "solo" option for quests up to level 7? (I think) already.  Additionally, experienced players can solo quests up to the cap even...although make no mistake, these are hardcore "perfect builds with perfect gear" type situations.  You can, however, solo any thing you want...it may not have a solo difficulty, but you can try to solo it on normal instead.

Also, as of Mod 6, quest rewards and experience for solo difficulty are being increased to help solo'ers. (next week).

I got interested in this game after my good friend Thillain told me off for thinking the game was dead.

So i got the trial last night and

    1. Found the graphics (important for me) to very detailed and smooth at 200fps.

    2. Found the xter customisation to be quite in depth, with a lot of different options and career paths.

    3. Found the actual dungeons to be amazing, i of course have only been in 2, solo, but already i can see how good they are, they are very precise and detailed.

The Dungeon Master is just a wonderful bonus, unbelievable.

After playing various MMOs I have grown a fondness for dungeons, the inter-dependance of the party members etc,

I am not really interested in crafting or PvP, so to find a game that is dedicated to this sort of game play is a Godsend

On top of all that i went to PC World at lunch time and found the collector's box for £4.95! Can't wait to get home, looking forward to many happy hours in this game.

The Dungeon Master is about my favorite part of entering a dungeon. He does a good voice. The worse one is Gary Gygax (sp?) when he narrates. He may have came up with D&D, but he stinks at narrating. I've grouped with several people doing Deleria's tomb (sp?) and when he begins to talk they have to stop and /bow to the great one. hahaha

I've heard they have a female voice doing the DM for the new nacropolis dungeons. Maybe Vincenz can verify that, and a lot of people on the DDO forums seem to like her.

Was going to ask, but does the collector's edition come witht he high-rez textures? Just something to think about if your computer can handle it. I think the game looks 100x better with high-rez installed. If not you can download the high-rez client now I believe.

They do, which makes me sad because I always liked when the male voice tried to sound female "like Cry for Help" LOL!

At the risk of drawing tons of Fan-Boy fire, I will give you a thought on why some folks don't like DDO.

    *  There was, and still is, not enough content for them to restrict the 'adventures' to a one-time successful run, and then onto the next one.  As you would do with real D&D Modules.

    *  This puts folks in the sad position of having to run the same 'adventure' over, and over, and over again.  Is fine for WoW, but this was supposed to be D&D.

    *  Once this repetitive cycle starts, what you get is groups that know the instances, traps, chests, bosses, hands down cold.  So, they just blast through the 'adventure' for the loot.  This puts the new player in the tragic position of not even getting to enjoy the small amount of content that is provided.

Recommendation for all new players of DDO is to find a guild that caters to RP and doing the Instances as they were meant to be done, especially if a new player is present on the Adventure.

    Good Hunting

I downloaded the Hi Rez trial version last night, and i assume that i just need to update the key i get in the box to my account.

The Limited Edition box came out when the game was released and if the hi res version wasnt available then it wouldnt be in the box.

It has a CD with Audio and one with Art Work, a poster, key card and map. and two mini statues.

No "fire", but you're incorrect.  You can level to cap without ever repeating a quest in DDO now.  In fact, you won't have even run all the quests.

Now, just like every other game, when you do hit cap and "end game" chances are you'll be repeating raids or grinding favor or grinding for items...but like I said, that's pretty much every MMO on the market.

Thanks for the advice, i will ensure that i let anyone i group with that i am new and hopefully they will be patient.

Not really done RP but dont mind giving it ago.

I heard they had added a lot of content over the years, doubled since release, so hopefully there will be a lot in there for me. Also i can roll at least one Fighter, spell caster etc.

  • ShoalShoal Member Posts: 1,156

Could be true.  Used to be you had to at least run the quests on the three modes.

But, even if it is true, I suspect it will be very hard to find a group that is not ninja-running the instances.

Really need to get a good RP guild, I think, for DDO to even approach what it is supposed to be.
