Really need to get a good RP guild, I think, for DDO to even approach what it is supposed to be.

Surprisingly, this has actually improved a lot S.  Partially because with some of the most recent hype there are legitimately a LOT of new players (not just alts) running around the harbor.  Still a problem, no doubt, but I can say that if you say you're new...MOST of the community will slow down and let you enjoy the experience and the quest.

I do agree though, a good RP guild can help a lot.  Additionally, if you really want a completely different experience I recommend rolling at least one character to play in a perma-death guild...it's truly crazy LOL!

A few questions i do have are:

    1. AC -what does this mean, from the limited reading i have done so far it means Armor rating, if so why the acroynm "AC"?

    2. I hear talk of pure classes, does this mean that i can make a fighter that can cast spells, or does it mean that if i roll a Fighter i just invest in say CON and STR? In other words what is a multiclass character.

    3. Can i increase the size of the hotbar as the icons are really small?

    Thanks,

    Thanks,

    1. AC is armor class.  The higher the number, the harder it is for an enemy to hit you.  Everytime an enemy swings a 20 sided die is rolled.  That enemy will also have a bonus (like you) on his "to hit", let's say he's got a +10 to hit and rolls a 13.  His "To Hit" roll would be a 23.  Now, that 23 has to be a higher number than your armor class for him to hit you.  Same works in reverse, when you swing at a monster.  Armor class can be garnered from a variety of types of protections and sources.  You can have a "dodge" bonus to AC, gained from the feat dodge, and from a few rare items in game.  Dodge is unique, in that it's the only AC type that stacks (so a +1 dodge item would actually stack with a +2 dodge item).  Other types are Armor (your actual armor you are wearing), dexterity bonus (from the stat, this is also limited by the type of armor you wear), deflection items, paladin aura bonuses, etc.

    2. In DDO you can multiclass, up to 3 different classes in one character.  SO you could be a 4th level fighter, 3rd level wizard, and 7th level rogue all together in one 14th level character and have the abilities of each of those classes at those levels combined.  Multiclassing is pretty complex, though and recommended for after you really start getting a handle on the classes and restrictions first by playing a "pure" class.

    3. I honestly have no idea LOL!

  • VincenzVincenz Member Posts: 1,498

LOL...btw VS I realize that Armor Class explanation is probably still somewhat confusing after re-reading it, it's a pretty complicated system.  Just wait till you look at how complicated it is to calculate "to hit" rolls and all the potential bonuses and minuses that go into it though

  • VultureSkullVultureSkull Member UncommonPosts: 1,774

Thanks Vincenz for your detailed responses.

Interesting about the multiclasses, I will definitely be starting with a pure class as with feats, skills, spells etc there is a lot to keep me busy!!

Oh, no doubt.  Multiclassing can be VERY complex.  Not only are you opening up the unique abilities/skills of X class that you multiclass into...but also their enhancement lines, feats, spell lists, etc.

Some multiclasses though are definitely amazing characters, Battle Bards for instance are becoming quite popular (fighter/bard mix that can self buff, heal, play a few songs, cast a few crowd control spells, still have high armor class and attack bonuses).

I'm going to be trying DDO out again tonight. I played for 2 months at release. (no longer have the game or that machine that it was on). I will gladly repurchase the game if I like it now.

I have my wife DL'ing the game at home for me while I am working, but she said nothing about any high-res option when she did it. She went to the trial page, submitted my email address and said it took her right to a download and gave mailed me a key.

I want to see this game in all it's glory... do I need to dowload from somewhere else to get a high res client?

Right now I am deeply enjoying PotBS, but I am a table top D&D'er at heart and had great hope for this game, and I really like Turbine as well, so I want to check it out again before I write it off and miss the boat. I usually run 2 mmorpg subscription, so this would be my other game if it works out.

So where do I get the high res client from?

    Thansk! :)

    Thank you! You rock!

I hope I can get into the world this time. I was so deeply in love with Forgotten Realms that it was a tough adjustment. I know that Eberron is probably every bit as good (if not better) to a lot of folks, but FR is a hard habbit to break :)

Well, tonight I shall try DDO again :)

    Thanks again!

I assume the HR client is on the disc? (I can't remember it's been a while)

I just found (called) it at a Gamestop that I will be passing in about an hour, for 6.99

I want to start a new account anyway so i can keep it on the same one as my AC1 and LotRO accounts in case Turbine ever does a station pass type deal, I'll be all over that deal :)

I don't remember either. I thought I read somewhere the CD version did not have the high-res pack and the DVD version was the only one with high-res. I'm probably wrong. I just got the dvd version because it was all on one disc. I don't know if the CD version is either, at the time both were 14.99 so I just bought the DVD.

I do know the high-res client takes a lot longer to patch than the regular version. And theres been a lot of content added since that disc was made haha.

    Hope you enjoy DDO!!

Either way, you could take the key from the CD and enter it into the downloaded High Rez client to upgrade it as well ;)

p.s. the download is now updated all the way through mod 5, I believe, so much less downloading after the install.

i played the trial a while ago, and it was defnitly fun and diffrent, the thing is it not like the normal "MMOs" were is a big world to explore and stuff, its all instanced and if you someone whos played games like EQ/Vanguard/FFXI the style just wont fit your normal expectation of an MMO. honestly if it wasnt all instanced and they made it a giant exploarable world like other MMOs, with that combat system and stuff, id play it in a heartbeat. fun game, just not the causual style of MMOs so less ppl are attracted to stay long.

100% agree, and while I don't think it's at all a downfall of the game as far as gameplay goes, it does hurt numbers of widespread appeal for sure.

That said, I do think it's relatively true to the D&D experience that way (the instancing I mean), in that you'd never play PnP and be running into other groups of adventurers playing PnP at another house down the block LOL!

I don't see why this game gets such a bad rap. I mean sure its heavily instanced, and there isnt much exploration but as a game it is hella fun.

    My thoughts exactly LOL!

In all fairness, some of the "bad rap" comes from it's own mistake of having a pretty light content level at release...sadly, a lot of people have no idea that it's been doubled since then.

Doubling near-to-nothing doesn't exactly spark much interest.

Well, since it was far from "near to nothing", I'll take your comment for it's worth..."near to nothing".

p.s. The quests in DDO each have their own dungeon, traps, mobs, puzzles, etc....every single quest.  None of them are "go kill 20 wombats" or "take this letter to doofus"...and you can level to the cap without repeating a single one.  I'd call that significan't content.

p.s. Although you clearly can turn quite the phrase, I believe the expression you were looking for is "next to nothing"...

    Perfect! Thanks to all!

I downloaded the high res client and also picked up the box from GS tonight (DVD version).

I guess this is my final question, if I play the trial for 10 days and then upgrade with the retail key, would i still get the first month free? I know some companies don;t do it that way but Turbine usually did I think.

    MORE STUFF!!!

  • safwdsafwd Member Posts: 879

I must say, excellent help given on this forum. It is a surprise after some of the other ones.

So i have some questions about the game if anyone will anwer them.

I played D&D for a few years and loved the game, so i was very excited about D&D Online, though i always played Forgotten Realms or Dragonlance, no Eberron experience. Some background, i really loved EQ1, didnt care for EQ2, was playing WoW when DDO came out and was ready to jump ship, then i saw alot of bad reviews and heard alot of negative stuff in game WoW so didnt.

So anyway, the questions. Is DDO completely instanced when talking about hunting, ala Guild Wars, or are then some open areas where multiple ungrouped people play together. I primarily solo but i really like having other people around, weird i know, and that is how i played EQ mostly. Guild Wars is cool but i dont like being the only one in an area much (very limited experience). If it is completely instanced are towns the only area where you will really see people running around?

What isthe advancement speed. I prefer games like EQ that take awhile to advance over games like WoW that gets you to max level in a couple months. I am in a game for the ride, not the rush to end game.

I hear that the free trial has helped but how is the population, and is it overly top heavy?

How graphically intense is it? I dont have the newest computer, it plays EQ2  alright but not on high, obvioulsy plays WoW fine, LoTRs played alright on medium, Vanguard played on best performance. Actually this is what i have: 2.1G processor, 1 GB Ram, 9600 Pro 256 video card. Yes, i know i have to upgrade soon.

I guess that is all i really have for now, thanks for any input that you give.

i may have to just download the trial.

    ANSWERS! ;)

    1. Yep, absolutely.  Much like D&D PnP style, if there's bad guys around...it's you or your group dealing with them.  It's absolutely 100% instanced if there's combat and/or questing involved.

    2. Advancement speed is kind of what you make it.  You can absolutely powerlevel to the cap...but I HIGHLY recommend against it.  Doing so would mean skipping a huge (like 80%) of the content in the game.  If you do it slowly and enjoy the dungeons and questing, it'll take a fairly long period of time (and the cap goes up again next week).

    3. Lately, actually, the pops haven't been "top heavy".  It was a problem for a while, no doubt, and I recommend to every new player to tell groups that you ARE new, most will then go slowly and let you really experience each quest even if it's their 7th alt running the quest ;)

    4. Engine wise, you're totally solid although you won't be able to run at highest settings.  Luckily, DDO recently did a significant engine upgrade (last release) that not only increased the quality of the graphics but actually reduced the PC load for them as well.

Solo?  Yep, you can do it...but I really don't recommend it.  DDO, like DnD is a game about getting a group of adventurers together and having an adventure!  Grouping in DDO nets you the same (or better) loot and experience as solo'ing does.  Solo the harbor maybe, get a feel for the dynamics (because it is VERY different than most MMOs) but then definitely start trying the groups, the UI for grouping is easy to use.

    HAVE FUN IN STORMREACH!

p.s. I can't emphasize enough, this is a different MMO...combat, the feel, everything.  If you have questions once you start come back here or go to the main forums, people WILL help! ;)

  • VincenzVincenz Member Posts: 1,498

OH!  One more thing, and rereading this and the word "hunt" made me think of it...

    this isn't Wow brutha...you don't "hunt"

You enter a quest, after talking to an NPC who tells you what you're doing and why you're doing it.  You then go through a door of some kind, and you're in it.  Once in it, it's a unique map, handcrafted with traps, monsters, dungeon master commentary, chests, puzzles, etc.

Let me say this with emphasis every single quest in DDO is like this

There's no delivery quests, there's no "kill X number of this" quests, each quest is a unique dungeon involving the required exploration, and conquering.

  • VincenzVincenz Member Posts: 1,498

p.s. One thing Mith, you're entering the world of "MMO hated games" LOL!  It's not popular to enjoy DDO, so beware!

That said, there's some real tools beating up on POTOBS right now that I'm basically risking another "time out" to beat on...and I didn't even like the game!

  • SevenwindSevenwind Member UncommonPosts: 2,188

My recomendation for a good grouping dungeon at low level that doesn't take a whole lot ot time is Durk's Got A Secret. If you're new to DDO and want to get your feet wet with grouping with PUGs that is the dungeon to try if you ask me. Plus you might meet some good people you want to put on friends list and group with them later.

Plus you might get a muckbane! Screw Arlos, adventure awaits, just ask Durk!
