Dont want to cool you down lads, but you have to PAY Fileplanet to be in! Payment for a beta yeah? I wonder what those guys are dreaming of in the night! Pft.
Lol, no way i'm paying for open beta : /.... sigh this is a huge let down.
.
WHY FUNCOM ...WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.
where are you seeing this? paid members are call the founders club and the freebies are called subscribers....the only thing you have to worry about is downloading it so as hell from fileplanets crappy free servers
FilePlanet Subscriber / Founders' Club Member are two different things
Sounds better now, but the downloader will be hell....the amount of people going to be downloading and all : /
Look at the right that is red THAT is founders club. Now look at the left thats blue THAT is subscribers. The difference between them is founders you pay more and get access to other sites. File planet subscribers which is the left gets full access to only Fileplanet.com and you pay less and if you look at the benefits one of them is "Beta access"
So i guess its bad again : / ...ffs funcom
This is not true guys. I am a free member of fileplanet and I get closed beta keys/open beta keys from there contests all the time. Good grief, people. Relax. We've been thru this with every open beta Fileplanet has hosted for the last five years. You will get a chance, it is just better odds being a paid member!

I've been a fileplanet member for at least five years. If they make people pay for AoC's open beta, it will be the very first time this has happened. Closed beta and contests, yes, I've seen them do what you describe. But never, ever an open beta.

Shannia is right,I have D/L beta's from fileplanet before,You dont have to pay,you will just have to queue and use the free service,It will just take you longer.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

What about exclusive betas though? Eh maybe your right guess we'll just have to wait and see
Learn to read my friend. It says you must be a file planet member. Do you have an account with fileplanet? When you sign up for the FREE account you are a fileplanet member. That is all that is required to sign up for it. Notice on fileplanet's announcement it says fileplanet subscriber / Founders Club Member. Founder's Club member is the paid subscription. Fileplanet subscriber is free. Now, I'll accept your apology for trying to call me a lier and hiding behind anonymity. Oh, please, learn to read. That is all.
I think you are wrong here Shannia. There is a difference between a member and a subscriber. When you click the join now thingie, Subscribe now comes out with three alternatives.
Click No thanks and you get a pop up with "last chance and a Conan "Subscriber exclusive beta" header.

If I'm wrong, then I apologize ahead of time. Like I've said, I never had to be a paid member for an open beta via fileplanet before. Also, if I'm wrong and they make you guys pay, I promise to remove myself from the fileplanet membership rolls and protest EIDOS for the rest of my gaming days. I've always recommended fileplanet to people, but that would be ultimate low and I'd put the blame right on EIDOS shoulders. After all, they are the one's marketing and publishing the game. I believe this decision is out of Funcom's hands.

there are some betas that are available to everyone of course those aren't big name titles. AoC is for founders club and subscribers only. usually if theres left over keys they will go to the free members but it says founders and subscribers only. if you didn't have to pay to get into exclusive demos/betas then no body would.

Wrong. They switch to paid member when they see queue after queue of no waiting for downloading on the fast, member only servers and 12-24 hour waits on the free slower download servers with a popular AAA game hits fileplanet. That is how fileplanet makes their money.

Well the madness proves the interest is great, which is generally good.
I dont like this playing around, go there, be special member here... why not just open it up and be done with the scheming!
MY guess is, Fileplanet paid a hefty sum to Funcom for the beta and now gets it back via the expected rise of paid subs. Its just what I read from it, I may be wrong, but thats how it looks to me, thus both Fileplanet and Funcom milk the cow ahead.

That would be Fileplanet paid EIDOS a hefty sum, not Funcom. I have a feeling you are correct.

This open beta process is leaving a bad taste in my mouth and probably won't even bother. The NDA will be lifted and I'll be reading other people's experiences closely. I still have my game pre-ordered.

It actually seems to me that FC's worst decision up till now was to make Eidos publisher of this game. The Pre-Order Chaos and now this Open-Beta Choas as well. Both are probably related to Eidos and not really to FC who are just trying to make their game (nevermind what you think of that game for the moment).

Obviously some hand jobs where exchanged at some level, and Fileplanet scores an exclusive deal to distribute the Beta, and FunCom and/or Eidos get's some sort of benefit from Fileplanet be it money or otherwise of which we'll likely never be aware, obviously Fileplanet has some sort of leverage to bring the AoC open beta into it's paid subscription territory, that they actually paid for it is a likely answer.

I'll not be giving Vileplanet $$ for anything, much less a beta. I mean, the game will be out soon enough, and in the mean time I've got LOTRO, which I will likely play alongside AoC anyway.
I'm glad the open beta is soon. Last year, early I think, Funcom had a survey asking us about web based services and such, if we'd pay up above our subscription fees for those extra services and such. I'm still waiting for that bomb to drop with their subscription information on the game. As far as LOTRO goes, I'm so glad I bought the lifetime membership. Only four more months and I'll be playing that game for free until they shut down the servers.

Miagisan, I know this is bad derailing my own thread, but what you should do is ask in the LOTRO forums for a founding member with buddy keys left. You wouldn't get the lifetime ingame items but you can get $9.99 a month or the $199 price. Only drawback is, you'd have to start over on a fresh account.

Am I wrong to think this is also Funcom's way of attempting to keep the younger kids out? If some of you are really throwing a fit over a 6 dollar a month subscription, there are much more important things to do with your time than mmo's.
