As a Teen, Everquest Made Me Smarter; WoW Makes People Stupid >Poll<

I understand it is trite to say, "WoW dumbs people down."  There is, however, an element of truth to it.

WoW has invited WoW=sp33k, which is communicating without actually 1) saying anything or 2) adhering to rules of proper grammar.  Moreover, the gameplay/content in WoW requires little to no strategic thinking, planning, or any other skills of the mind.  You kill five boars, you collect five boar tusks, and you return to the NPC with five boar tusks.  You then obtain a new quest.  The community in WoW lends itself to this, and most members of the community do not speak English, which creates it own language barriers that exacerbate the problems of WoW-sp33k.

[If you read to this point, you probably do not suffer from WoW's attention deficit disorder.]

[Edit:  by the way, sense my humor and sarcasm are not detectable online, this is a joke - mostly.]

[btw - it is supposed to be since - wink*wink*.  Points if you detect other errors.]

Playing a computer game made you smart? LMAO.

Have you ever even played EQ? People always find short-hand hand ways to communicate when typing. L33t sp34k has been around far longer than WoW, my friend.

When I was really young and playing Everquest, my typing skills actually improved.

Even more, my grammar skills as well.  As I recall, we never had EQ-sp33k such as in WoW.

Smart? In a serious sense, of course not.  Everquest did not, however, "dumb-down" our language, our strategic thinking in games, imagination, and so forth.  If anything, they were enhanced from it.

If you say so. I remember plenty of people saying SOW PLZ, PORT PLZ, HEAL PLZ, REZ PLZ SUXXORZ, ROXXORZ, l33t, and all that retarded stuff.

    SoW is an acroynm.

I do not see an issue with, "port plz" or "heal plz."

I do not recall having seen suxxorz, but I think you are referring to succor.

    Roxxorz? I never seen that.

LOL. Maybe it was just my server, but for some reason roxxorz and suxxorz was a total fad with the l33t crowd for awhile. BTW, suxxorz refered to something or someone that sucked.

Agree, I played EQ for 3 years or more and had to deal with this crap every day. I actually think WoW is about the same as far as people taking typing shortcuts. Not much has changed there......just more Chuck Norris jokes.

Right. Attacking me because I used "LMAO" was amusing. I'm sorry I missed that great joke.

I understand the focus is on WoW-sp33k, but WoW has made little addicts out of children.

Been playing EQ for many years now and have rarely seen anyone try to use L33t spe4k, the few that did were told to either knock it off or go play with another guild.

I am a firm believer that one of the core differences between the older games like EQ and the newer games like WoW is the original target market. EQ was targeted to an audience that was familier with PnP games and text based MUD's. They expected immersion, roleplaying, and challenging encounters with penalties attached for dying.

WoW, on the other hand, was designed for the mass market, it provides instant gratification, simpler challenges designed to the the player a rapid sense of progression, and some very nicely polished content .

Differant target audiences, one happens to be far larger than the other. Nearly all new games are going to follow the more popular of the two formats.

    EXCELLENT!

You are exactly right.  EQ was designed for more intelligent people that "expected immersion, roleplaying, and challenging encounters."

I could not agree more.  2 Gold Stars!

LMAO. Yes, I missed that fact. It was so well supported, too. Man, I really must be dumb. Guess I should have logged another year of EQ. Maybe I'd be as smart as you.

    If you say so...

On a more serious note, on the OP subject:

i havent found mutch l33t speak in any game untill i got "grabbed" by a game about 1 year before WoW came out. That game was F2P, asian grind fest, but highly addictive. I started playing it on good faith, untill i discovered i was about 2x older then 90% of the population.

At the time since i was new to that kind of language, i would get serious boggled since i could not understand what the hell they were talking about.

Starting phrases by "lol", ending with "rofl", having "lmao" in the middle, and trading "i"/"one" with "1", inserting "8" to replace 'half-words'...

I swear, some people make up those "words" on the fly.

    "lol m8, n1 cud say y u ned..."

Then they get amazed that people make fun of them.

As a high school teacher, I can tell you that WoW didn't dumb people down at all. EQ didn't make you smart, either. You were smart before you every played EQ, and the people that you judge as dumb - you would have judged them as dumb through RL interaction all the same.

I totally agree. When you play both games, you will definitely see the difference. Most of the terms mentioned was never mentioned while I was playing EQ. But then again WoW in itself was a great game as well. Both have their way of making their games exciting, and by far EQ made it much more difficult, but WoW has a way of making it MORE appealing (dumbing it down? I dont know) What makes it great is the way you can "choose" your path, the more you concentrate on that certain path makes you much more powerful. Same goes for EQ with their AA abilities. But then again while you're doing AA's you're basically SUPER POWERFUL (dumbing it down? definitely) in all aspects of the game, as long as you can power up on everything. People now days can solo raid mobs, thats just how easy EQ has become with AA's.

So in a sense both games "dumb" down, but there is a BIG difference and that is the lore and the storyline. WoW is basically split into 2 factions ( alliance and horde ) while EQ is pretty much open ended nowadays. But From each and every expansion ( I know its not fair since WoW only has 1, 2nd coming soon right? expansion) It's been a while since I played WoW...EQ has given me a sense that I have a purpose to pursue what I need to do in order to keep coming back for more. There's so much depth into the MMO that means so much to do whatever it takes to get a step further into the storyline. On the other hand WoW makes it so much easier to get by because of its population, almost everywhere I go there will be people around to get through so much obstacles because they are at the same spot that I am at.

You all see where I'm going. I fully support both games, they are great in different ways. But when it all comes down to it, EVERY MMO will dumb down their game to get the players to enjoy what they have to offer.

IMO the only thing they havent really been able to accomplish is though is PvP. When you're going PvP its not meant to be "balanced" whoever have the better skills will always win not matter what gauranteed. And thats where "SKILLED BASED" MMOs will always win. (But I'm going off the subject here so I'll stop it here)

You presume a lot.  No wonder you are a high school teacher, no doubt a government ("public") teacher - now I am being presumptuous.  You are growing on me!

    1.  People do not all speak the same way in "every" MMORPG.  That is outrageous.

    2.  The general populous of the world does not adhere to proper grammar?  I understand you are a high school teacher and have not been around much.

    3.  "As a high school teacher" you do not tell me anything other than you have summers off.  A high school teacher is not in a position to use "high school teacher" to qualify as an expert on any matter.  In fact, I have long supported malpractice (being able to sue teachers and their institutions) for not doing their jobs - educating our youth.

Listen carefully, "high school teacher," if you believe that the "general populous" does not adhere to proper grammar, then it is YOUR fault!  You and your union buddies are responsible for this.

I played EQ1 when before I was even a teenager, the game really made you think for yourself and called for serious and strategical thinking constantly. I better tought me how not to make people angry and greatly increased my typing skills and even my vocabulary in some cases. I'm only 14 now but I am 100% sure that EQ1 greatly advanced my maturity level. The new games these days are too laid out and require hardly any thinking, its sad really.

As games have progressed, I've found myself getting lazy. The games of yester-year required much more in the way of hand-eye coordination ( i.e. pacman, pong, etc. used to rule those games but now I can't play them for more than 2 mins without getting frustrated.) I do however agree that WoW did make it to where you really didn't have to think to play it.

You could argue then, that because Tetris is simple, Tetris makes you stupid...

    But you would be wrong.

No, a simplified game cannot make you less intelligent. Speaking l33t might ruin your grammar, but it doesn't make you less intelligent either. A game might have aspects that attract these people, but it does not cause them.
