Sold out? Well, if you feel betrayed by Funcom because they are moving into consoles and attempting to grab a bigger slice of the pie which is online gaming then yeah, they sold out.
I am pleased by this decision to move MMOs to the consoles. Evolution baby!! Its only a matter of time till MMOs are on the next gen consoles. AoC is the first test. If its a success then expect more to follow.
Well saying AoC is the FIRST test is an insult to EQ's Online Adventure. AoC is not the first MMORPG out there to go to consoles.
Edit: Also EQ Online Adventures was a good but not big success for a period of time for the Playstation.
Well, there's one thing that really puzzles me then...If there are so many people still having a hard time playing AoC because it requires a mid to top notch rig to run it, how the hell can a console handle it when the specs should not even be THAT close to a computer. I mean today's console games have terrific graphics, but in the end it will never be better than a computer.

I don't think it really requires much to run well. I think people are/were exaggerating that bit. I run AoC much better than LotRo. However I understand that there are certain pieces of hardware, drivers, etc that clash with the game.

Well, no...in the end the console will never be better than a computer. In the beginning of its life, though, it will be better than most. The reason why a console would run it better than a PC with equivalent hardware is because of all the other unnecessary applications and services running in the background, coupled with more peripherals, etc.
Also, to support Gazenthia's point that there are too many factors that will affect the way a game runs, LotRO runs better than AoC in my case. Is his rig better than mine? Who knows, but he runs a newer game better than an older game. Wouldn't you think it would be the other way around as well? Basically, way more factors affect a PCs performance.
Well, no...in the end the console will never be better than a computer.
Just in case you thought otherwise: I don't believe consoles are ever any better than PCs. I was just pointing out that AoC doesn't actually/necessarily require bleeding edge rigs to perform well, and the latest gen of consoles may meet the minimum requirement.
The last console I ever bought or played on was the PS2, the year that it launched

No...I did not think you thought that. I stated my opinion that consoles, at launch, are better than most PCs that people own. And I just wanted to add my flavor to your point, which I agreed with.

IMO, I think they thought of both from concept and not a decision that was made afterwards. This game was designed with both platforms in mind. And come on....the XBox is just a PC in a fancy plastic case. We are talking about Microsoft.
I own a Wii and a PS3. Some games are just better on PCs, some on consoles and some really makes no difference. Hell, some games are better on the Wii then they would be on PS3.
It doesn't make a lick of difference if AoC was designed from the ground up to be XPlatform. If the content sucks, that's what will make a poor game. If things are packaged well together, the game will be good as well. If it has mass appeal, then the chances of it succeeding are better. To say (like the OP) that you can't make a game with an interesting story, good fun, good graphics and good performance because the console is a lesser platform is just plain ludicrous. Let's look at the success of GTA4.
For the record, my preferred poison is the PC game. I got consoles so that I can gather with friends and play some group games and have beer and play the drums and guitar and think I'm a rock star! On my PC, I prefer to shoot, slice and maim the whole lot of you (or die trying, which is what usually happens). Then the wife calls me and I go AFK.
Funny story I play on the PC, with a gamepad... Ha!
I'm only level 24 but so far but I can't say the gameplay sucks, it's different true, so relearn it and don't go about blaming the devs because you are unwilling to bend your head around what they are trying to do with the system.
It will take a year to make AoC playable for a console, so hardly adapted for a console at all. If it was we would have seen a console version this year. And that isn´t going to happen.
"With a week of solid play and 25 levels under my belt, I have walked away from my Hyborian adventure immensely satisfied with a title that has so far proven to be incredibly robust and full of potential. Many MMOs these days launch with nothing but promises, but the early content of Age of Conan is more than enough to warrant the attention of serious and casual MMO players alike. With its strong combat engine, excellent narrative experience, no-holds-barred attitude, and expansive world rich in lore, Age of Conan is an incredibly, almost surprisingly, strong MMORPG at launch.
Conan adopts a far more action-oriented approach to combat than its peers, and while spells still have cool-downs and cast times, the general pace of combat is sped up significantly. Melee attacks happen in real time; you can't click the auto-attack button and sit back. Players must continually hit one of three attacks—left, right, and overhead—to attack the target, and stringing together these attacks in certain ways results in damaging combos. Better still, most weapons produce splash damage which allows you to fight more than one enemy at once—something you'll do often, as one-on-one fighting is definitely not the norm in the game."
Those that actually plays AoC enjoys it very much.
Well its nice you can pick your server now, but when it launched and me and a group of my friends wanted to play together and just plain couldnt, that was a pain in the ass. It may have high subs, but it is an asian marketplace game, they have games over there that have higher subs than many many mmos, and most of those games we havent even heard of.
You are incorrect about the player demographics. North Americans (US) make up the majority of the players for FFXI worldwide. It's been like that for over 3 years now.
"Thankfully, a tight user interface makes the fast-paced combat easy to learn, and the options to customize the controls are welcome. Out of the box, there are solid options to improve the flow of battle, and you'll note that I've already got plenty of extra action bars at work in the screenshots. Click players, those who dislike using the keyboard, will enjoy the "Combat Rose," a neat GUI element that allows intuitive clicking for the various attacks by placing a little ring-like sectioned widget on the bar for the three different melee attacks. For the hardcore fans, the game has the ability to add interface mods that will allow the interface to evolve over time."

Exactly what I keep saying to people who claim the social structure of the game is ruined by the bad chat system. Its identical to the chat system in all the MMO's you mentioned lol.

The social structure of the game has its quirks, especially in chat. Some things are not terribly intuitive, which is why I personally struggle with it sometimes. But to say that it's ruined is premature. If it stagnates for months like that, then maybe it will be ruined because of it, but the game just came out. Hell, they even changed the chat colors to mimic more popular games. I would say they are more than being accommodating.
And to reply to ZORNDORF:
Chatting doesn't exist on consoles? I scoff at your remark.../scoff.../scoff.../scoff
And loading screens? I guess I played LOTRO, DDO, VG, EQ, GW, (continue ad nauseum) on consoles. Either that, or they're not really MMOs.

Serious question here, but has anyone actually considered HOW you would play AoC on a controller? ...from this interview with the lead AoC designer: "we designed AoC to be a console game from the beginning" "AoC's combat system has gone through nine iterations throughout Funcom's quest to make it appealing to console users."

Have to agree here to. I was hoping it would of been a bit better, and im sure improvements will come. I hope I never join the 'piss & moan' club.
And the Op is wrong about the "was" in the title. Xbox will get a version that of AoC as well. But the difference from the PC version is so big that it will not debut this year. And that despite that Xbox is very much like a PC itself. If it was designed for being a console game, then it should have been playable on Xbox already.
And talking about video games in general, including PC and console games. Age of Conan is doing extremly well for being a PC game .
GTA IV still top in UK, Age of Conan debuts in second
May 27th, 2008 @ 19:33
A good effort there from Funcom’s MMO, but nothing’s going to shake GTA IV at the top of the UK all formats for a while yet. Last week’s chart here. Data’s for the week ending May 24.
I'm planning on buying Mass Effect for the PC. I never played the console version, but I heard good things about the game. Do you think that Mass Effect being a console RPG originally, makes it a bad game? Or to put it in your terms, it sucks?
Have you played the game? The game is relatively instanced, but not 100% so. It's not like guildwars where there are like 40 instances. There are up to a maximum of 5 different instances during prime time and as low as 1 or 2 during slower times.
Designed to be a console game? Hard to notice honestly. Like some of the buttons are hard to deal with in combination with the combos, but onl because of finger spacing. Honestly, get an N52 game pad or some type of special keyboard to play this game, but it still is a lot of fun even on PC. I can't imagine playing the game on console right now and I have a 360. I just have no idea how it would work, but hey i guess we'll see.
The bugs are really not that bad as of level 30. I have barely encountered any...maybe 1 bug this entire time?
AI is not dumbed down. If anything it is more complicated than most MMORPG's I have played and believe me when I say that I have played most of them in the past 6 years. The AI is actualy relatively difficultif you're working with 2-3 person groups. They are adaptive.
You obviously haven't played. Don't be glad you canclled. Give it a try! I promise that if you liked games like Dungeon Siege or DIablo 2 with a little bit of a World of Warcraft PVP server feel, you'll do just fine. There is a lot going on here and i really suggest geting into a guild. It's a lot of fun! I highly recommend this game to people who like to have a more realtime oriented gameplay versus a constant click and pick type of MMORPG.

You realized you almost never get a reply? All things you say about AoC are just your experience.
See, you love World of Warcraft, right?
I never liked WoW classes, lore and art, for me it was always easier to get into games like Everquest 2, Vanguard and Guild Wars, the RPG and universe part of WoW it too Walt Disney for me... do I hate WoW? NO
See, because I really like Cronenberg´s movies, should I hate Star Wars ? No, and I dont...
My point is, you probably dont like the games I mentioned as you dont like AoC... but well, I just cant have fun playing a paladin or a hunter ( too cliche for me ) in a very very colorful world like WoW universe... soo
AoC, Everquest 2 and all games you hate are the kind of games people like me want to see... music , art, lore and gameplay from AoC for me is much more immersive than the pseudo seamless world from WoW.
You should have fun with the things you like and just forget the things that doesnt harm you, even if you dont like these things..like AoC...
...
The Chat system in AoC is good and functional as the chat system in EQ2, WoW, Vanguard, Guild Wars etc
....
Exactly what I keep saying to people who claim the social structure of the game is ruined by the bad chat system. Its identical to the chat system in all the MMO's you mentioned lol.

A good effort there from Funcom’s MMO, but nothing’s going to shake GTA IV at the top of the UK all formats for a while yet. Last week’s chart here. Data’s for the week ending May 24.
