I've never had so much fun playing an MMO. You can tell they spent so much more effort and love into this game than any other mmo on the market.
I've played AO, WoW, SWG, GW, FFXI and this one blows them all away.
I'm not that far but I've been watching my cousins much further in the game and listening to their opinions.
The number of people playing the game with positive opinions about the game is about 85%. So I think it's pretty obvious all the haters live and breed on the forum feeding on faboi-ing other games and posting blatant lies and misinformation about this one. I'm not even talking about misinformed opinions.. those are fine, but just plain LIES about the game information.
My review will consist of first replying to a negative review. Keep in mind I respect this member's review as they are his opinions and not just distorted facts.
Every zone, city and dungeon is instanced
First, the zones are huge and COMPLETELY handcrafted (that or just amazingly generated).
They're absolutely beautiful and lush and realistic and like I said, they all feel handcrafted.
The cities are immense.. You'll see dogs chasing cats, giant courtyards, statues, royal looking buildings and run-down looking buildings. Many places to enter (not all at once, but with quests, keys, etc.) The land is well-incorporated and creatively made.. using cliffs as structures for buildings and multi-leveled areas.
Much of the cities are left for exploration and you need skills to get everywhere, namely, climbing. (you can climb ladders, roots, vines, etc. in this game. I saw a video of some chick climbing a city wall using the decorative flowered vines. My only beef is that certain simple ladders require "skill" to climb :P)
They're nothing like Guild Wars which feels like levels rather than lands.
Saying instances counteracts immersion is a lot like saying turning pages in a book counteracts your immersion in that book. Maybe that's just me, but I have no problem with it and I'm greatly enjoying not having to press autorun and guide my character through endless pre-generated mush that the haters seem to prefer so much.
Zones are very linear not allowing free movement as you have to follow paths in most zones
This is true for SOME places, but it just encourages asking for escorts or directions from more experienced players which I think is realistic and not much of a problem.
Cannot climb mountains or even navigate simple raised terrain unless there is a set path up a mountain
I've experienced the exact opposite. You can't climb straight up cliffs, no. I've found so many alternative creative ways to get places such as sprinting and jumping over a drop off.
Very system intensive and unless you have a decent gaming system you will find it very difficult to play; even those with systems who meet and exceed the required specifications are obtaining low FPS.
Yes, you need a decent rig. No, most the people I've talked to in the game with decent computers, and I've questioned the OOC channel numerous times, say they experience no lag even in crowded places and nor do I.
Siege warfare is not immense as anticipated and is actually an instanced battleground of a maximum 48 players vs 48 players. If your guild has 200 members; forget 3/4 of your guild being on the field to defend your guild city.
I can't imagine all 200 members of a guild always being online all the time.. but ok.
48 vs 48 helps small guilds defend their keep. It prevents lagfests. And it's easily changeable for Funcom later on.
Very easy gameplay with little challenge
Then fight harder mobs? I don't understand something like this. If you're not being challenged, maybe it's time to find higher level bosses.
Many of the dungeons have an "epic" option that makes it much MUCH harder.
Hardly any need to group
Sure, if you're being a panzy and can't try for epic instances or harder mobs.
Grouping reduces the amount of XP you receive
mobs and quest items are on respawn timers and you suffer a lot of waiting around
It doesn't necessarily reduce the amount of XP you recieve if you fight harder mobs like you should be doing when you're in a group.
They respawn plenty quick enough and there's usually more quest items around a dungeon or zone than one needs.
Death penalty lacks any impact
You sometimes have to travel all the way back to your place of death to collect the tombstone to reduce a rather punishing death penalty that lasts 30 minutes. (I haven't figured out when and what causes this occurs, just that it occurs)
Very few players met in each zone due to instancing
Yet you complain that people are stealing your quest items?
Maybe I haven't gotten far enough but I see people all the time. So much so, that being on a pvp server I have to be cautious traveling.
Poorly constructed user interface
From moveable and directional hotbars to invetories that open conveniently around vender menus, I don't see how they're poorly constructed. I find everything easy to manage and well made.
Lack of inventory space
Purchase a better bag.
Lack of weapon, armour and spell descritpions and statistics - you don't know what anything does
The only thing combos don't tell you is how much damage they do which isn't hard to find out after the first time you use them.
Weapons and armor tell you EXACT stats from damage range, how fast you swing, bonuses like +5.2% dexterity or 1.4 unholy damage.
Combos tell you percentages and stats and everything you could want.
Very difficult to progress your character as nobody knows where to quest from one place to the next
I wonder why..?
It's a new game, not enough people know yet.
Difficult to meet up with friends as you are in one instance; they are in the other.
Groups always stay in same instances. And personally, everytime I follow some dude to beat the shit out of them and they instance, I instance into their instance. That may just be luck, but I've yet to experience a problem with this.
_______
Maybe I just have the perfect mindset for this game, but I really think this is one of the best mmo's out there and we haven't even gotten but a taste of the end game experience (a few players reaching level 80 does not constitute us having experienced all the end game has to offer).
Overall, I couldn't be happier with this game. And though the forums don't show it.. MOST people are really loving this game too. They're just in the game having a blast instead of wasting their time here whining.
Comments
Welcome, and very glad to hear you are enjoying it.
Thanks :-)
Well, I'm off to go play.. I fully expect to come back to how much I "lied" about this "horrible game" lol.
I think this is a good Review/Flame Ive yet to buy AoC been seriously thinking about it but still unsure, Since its a new game a large flood of people came in and Alot werent satisfied obviously since its a new game and all and then they pull shit outa there ass and lie through there teeth. Main thing I want to come to this game for is the great PvP ive heard about, Last 4 years ive been playing PvE ordinated. Now Its my turn to hack off some heads

Don't ya just love these lvl 1 first perspective of the game reviews? Of course because we all know AoC is such a well thought out game with no bugs or glitches, and their ban hammer hasn't gotten over zealus. Yeah I like people reviewing games who just bought it and probly just loaded it up.
I make all my decisions based on people who haven't played the game; good show good show. Man I almost couldn't right that I was laughing so hard at how bad AoC is.
I would still recommend waiting for the buddy pass. Some love AoC and some hate it. Im sure those who aren't writing negative reviews are lying or to piss off the fanbois.
Buddy passes should be implemented in a few weeks

Prexix, what lvl are you?

What level are you?
Age of Conan is the Marmite of the game world, you either love it or hate it. Myself I think it is an ok game which i will enjoy for a couple of months.
I'm glad you are enjoying the game and welcome
The only thing I disagree on is the death penalty being punishing. If it was not for instance hoping as a form of quick travel, PvE death would be the next best thing. At the moment PvP death is the best form of quick travel.
im 56

I too am enjoying AoC greatly. My main gripe is the interface. I don't like how i can't move the 2 hotbars they give you this makes me place the only 2 extra i can add in weird spots in my screen. Really minor issue and i don't care THAT much but it would be nice to be able to move my hotbars and add more than just 2 extra. Im level 33 and i have already filled all 4 of the hotbars they give me....
I never let any post or words influence my decision to play a game and I'm sorry for anyone that is influenced like that.
No what I do is find a way to see it in action either through a family member's computer, demo at a store, through a friend, etc. For AoC it was watching through a family member's computer. I liked what I saw so I'm giving my own run of it.
I'm 20 now and still having fun.

To those asking, I'm lvl 37 and I've played for hours on my cousin's (48 and 52)
You can move the extra hotbars around and if you drag the end it will expand giving more slots. Also right clicking on the bar will move it horizontal or vertically.
Yeah, you're pretty much wrongly assuming things due to your acute sense of paranoia that people you don't know might like this game.
O NOES! Funcoms secret is out!
Yeah its such a horrible game that HAD to ship around 700k units.......and have 400k people signing up in the last week.
Only a horrible game would do that.
What is your physical limit?
In few months we'll see how much Funcom stocks will plunge, I would guess 'bout 40%.

I will throw the same dare at you I threw at the Vantards, when it DOESN'T happen, mind never posting ever again?! In those few weeks over 1.25 million copies will be sold, tthere is my take and I was right on target for Vantard and on target for AoC.
No it isn't. It is uninspirative, uninteresting, overhyped game that is being average in almost every aspect. Alternative games that are original are love or hate. AoC is the same average garbage that rellies on huge adv campaign.
REALITY CHECK
Great post OP. The forums at mmorpg.com are heavy filled with trolls, haters, and doomsayers. Sure some may have some valid points but I have never seen so much negativity elsewhere.
Seems like many of them think AoC is fun but for most of them they need their daily fix with immersive flametrollhatesandboxwars at mmorpg.com/forum/
lol, yet most the reviews on these boards are negative. One good review and you joke about it being Funcom. That makes sense!
And I've never seen such fanboism that you can find in official AoC forums, some people voice their dislikes of the game, all very much valid, and fanbois are all over it before the poor guy has even pressed "post".
Even Vanguard fanclub pre-launch was almost polite compared to AoC.
lol, oh I know it. They're really something..

lol, you mean the forum with only people that have the game is over all positive? Uncanny, lol!
Have fun with singleplayer mmorpg. All servers are low populated. Very few play tis game. I
