I dont think age is a factor for liking these new generations of MMOs. I am young, and don't consider the combat system in AoC such a big deal. In some games you have to push more buttons than others, thats it. I know people that are in their late 30s and 40s playing AoC and very young people playing RTS games, which are games that really require you to work up your brain by doing a lot of crazy multi-tasking . Obviously we are humans.
It is not the age, it's what you consider entertaintment to you. Funcom decided to target the people that like this type of MMO, obviously because is the niche that have a lot of potential to provide a lot of profit. And as they said, they were designing the game for consoles, so it's not a surprise really.
What is bad for me can be good for others, regardless of age.
From the moment I heard Conan was really targeted for a console market the pieces of the puzzle I had with this game fell into places. NOW I understand why they choose such unadapted graphics and they HAD to create very small copies of the zones (number of players not the surface) of the lore just to have decent Frames PS. It is not normal for a PC and certainly an MMORPG that you cut this world into so tiny little pieces just because you want to show off the graphics. Any zone with 200 players or more in one copy of the world would render the game complete unplayable because of the graphics data used. But in console gaming it is second nature to let Hi Res prime loading times and "uploading graphics screens. Every race screen on XBOX has them between any new race with .... 16 cars in on race. FunCom uses exactly the same console techniques now for MMO's. For the XBOX they even have the added advantage everyone uses the same hardware, so this "PC launch" is nothing but a MASSIVE test fase: HOW MANY people can we have in ONE instance 'copy' and with what kind of hardware. Like I said as even the basic zones in White Sands or the City have fast 20 or more copies, it means that they have about 30 to max 40 players playing in ONE copy of the game. Now whether these instances have 30, 40 or 50 players, that doesn't matter. What matters is they use the PC market to FINANCE the development of the console market. And you all there are the ginny pigs that pay. NO city 2 types, NO siege battles, NO DX 10 on launch and a game that's half finished. You guys 'and even I (because I bought the CE) are financing the hollow console MMO game of Conan. We are the (paying !) ginny pigs.
Country music and metal are dumbed down versions of real music no matter what kind it is - nu metal to death metal or Tim Mcgraw to Johnny Cash. You aren't cultured at all for liking video games, you're just a jaded star wars fan (who is probably fat, most likely (sorry, it's the truth)). I'm gonna listen to some real music - like Beethoven, Brahms, or Bach, and do something worthwhile...like read a BOOK or practice cello. The "masses" may be getting dumber, you included, but that doesn't matter to anyone who actually cares about culture.
It's funny you guys assume that I am a SWG crybaby. Head over to the forum and take a look (you're way off).
A couple of you said I'm being arrogant... what are you talking about? I believe you (you know who you are) are being arrogant. Not me. I'm simply expressing my personal opinions. Attacking my character is the lowest form of debate.
As for music... music is everything to me... I play guitar. And fat? Jesus. Talk about grade school mentality... name calling! And as for pop culture.. I'd be willing to wager I could own your ass in film trivia, from silent films, talkies, on up.
I love to read classic literature and histories of political ideologies. I'm also an artist.

This game was admittedly designed for gaming consoles and is therefore a watered down version of a true MMORPG. AOC lead developer: "we designed AoC to be a console game from the beginning" "AoC's combat system has gone through nine iterations throughout Funcom's quest to make it appealing to console users." link It's worth as an "MMO" should not even be seriously debated considering this very clear truth. Further, this game in my opinion has the potential to damage the overall genera, bringing the core of what an MMO is to new lows. Please don't misunderstand me; I'm not trying to attack anyone personally. I'm trying to point out that the sole reason this corporation (Funcom) made this game is to try and tap into a bigger market. In other words they are exploiting our genera for financial gains and we as MMO gamers should consider the damage it has the potential to cause to it. Again, I'm not attacking anyone personally but consider the damage World of Warcraft has caused. It was such a hit ($$$) that every other, more complex MMO tried to emulate it. In effect, dumbing down the genera. I like to compare World of Warcraft to pop music because pop music is very shallow and easy to understand and (admittedly) fun to listen to, and it out sells all other styles of music (by a large margin). Pop music has damaged other styles of music, like country music (which today is candyass pop-fluff w/ no soul), ditto pop punk rock and nu metal. It is in this way that these watered down MMO's are going to damage our genera. You can say that it does not matter, that it's just another duck on the pond - but I respectfully disagree. In fact, I've lost much hope for the genera. These corporations ruin everything. Music is milked ruthlessly and turned into shallow trends, punk fashion is sold in mass chain stores like Hot Topic, it never ends. They destroy the essence of whatever it is they are trying to exploit-for-profit. MMORPG's are no exception. I'm out.
You make a topic that already was made by someone who felt the need to misinform those who might not check if it actualy is true, well it's not. Unless i heard it wrong this is what i got out of what they said:
What was the role of you guy's planning to release on the XBOX360?
What was the impact of that on the pc version that we gonna see on the 20th
The impact was that when the game started production we always wanted to do BOTH, so instead of doing a port, you know this is the pc version here you go play it, you have to buy a keyboard, ... the impact was always, okay how can, First of all .....how ....does..... console players play their games, compared to how does pc players play their game... And ...being in the Conan licence, Okay...... more interaction, more direct combat, afcourse you have final fantasy turn-based that kind of stuff, but most console gamers like more direct interaction, more often then not and that was the essence of the combat system, allot was a leap of faith you know, ..can we do this?...perhaps...we don't know ...lets try see what happens, we are now into 9 iterations down the road, and thats the main impact you saw how you control it with ....... with a different directions, how the GUI or the graphics interface is build up with the taps and easy acces, and then we have a maze of challenges still to be solved afcourse, but that was the essence of it and thats what carried thru today ehmm yup,
Hey just a followup on that a litle bit is there a consurn from the sort of more hardcore pc gamers are going to see that in it's design and be like "Okay i'm not that intrested in this pc game because i feel like its more for the 360?
Never, he eh, i mean eh hahaheh he NO, these are the guy's that build Anarchy Online, i think what we learned from that is that eh don't give your players all the choices right away, but i asure you there is a enough meat in Conan as you start to digg down and get deeper into it, there is no watering down, it's just a thought on a bigger perspective on how to do it so and we have been doing console games, we have been doing, we started with samurai showdown and fatal fury and that kind of game by Sega and And we have these people with those kind of skills it's just how can we mix this, so so there is no watering down Aaaahh EEand i asure what people play the most is pc MMO's but we hopefully can take things a bit futher.
It's worth as an "MMO" should not even be seriously debated considering this very clear truth. Truth? That it plays better than the other MMOs on the market? That WoW was made for a low budget computer near the turn of the century? That my toaster oven can play WoW so a game made for a much more complex console than is required to play WoW or SWG is somehow a step backward? Nope, point invalid, next. Further, this game in my opinion has the potential to damage the overall genera, bringing the core of what an MMO is to new lows. This new low is still ahead of WoW, EQ2 and SWG... so what is your point? Tha perhaps this game wasn't the perect game IN YOUR MIND? Another invalid point, next. I'm trying to point out that the sole reason this corporation (Funcom) made this game is to try and tap into a bigger market. So, you are saying they made a product to sell? Hard;y a point against in a free market system. In other words they are exploiting our genera for financial gains and we as MMO gamers should consider the damage it has the potential to cause to it. I know you likely went to a public school, but look up the word exploit before you use it next time. In a free market there can never be an exploitation of the consumer. What are you communnist? Nobody is forcing the million sales of this product, people are free to do with their own life-markers (money what they choose... I am getting curious, do you have a point in this post? Again, I'm not attacking anyone personally but consider the damage World of Warcraft has caused. It was such a hit ($$$) that every other, more complex MMO tried to emulate it. In effect, dumbing down the genera. Yes it did, but it is also a free market, your polit bureau style ideas of how companies should be run is apalling. These corporations ruin everything. Do you think your top-down soviet style management system for games is better? The corporations are the ONLY ones that make these toys... exactly who do you think would do it otherwise? Sheesh, I worry about Kentuky schools... They destroy the essence of whatever it is they are trying to exploit-for-profit. There is no such thing as exploit for profit, socialist. It isn't even possible in a free market. Caveat Emptor! You don't like the game - don't play it. You think that sitting in your mother's basement complaining, on a web forum about toys, about how the products made by industry are so bad and you can do better than these evil corporations - you are a fool. I'm out. I doubt it. You are a troll and like the Magnisium citrate soap scum you scrubbed from the bathroom tile - you will always comes back faster than we would would hope.

Yes, you still wrong about the musical aspect, the fact you have a lot of mp3 files in your HD doesnt change that. When you said you are over 30s and not a sheep, showing how you are different from people that playes AoC ( or WoW ) showed arrogance. But the only thing that is important about the game is , your quote about AoC and consoles was wrong and was based in a lie.
I don't simply have a bunch of mp3's, I have entire discographies. Just give it a rest.
The only reason I mentioned my age is because some dude insinuated that I was in grade school and trying to be anti-society (which I'm not).
And if you don't realize that this game is designed for consoles... damn. It's clear to everyone.
And please point out how I was "showing arrogance." This one I still don't understand. The same dude called me a "sheep" I did not drop that term, he did.

While I don't agree with this guy 100%, resorting to name calling, labeling, and bullying because you don't agree usually takes a few frustrated posts before it reveals itself, but some of you guys fire right off the bat. Truely amazing that McCarthyism is alive and well today.
I think the OP is simply an idealist. I don't need pictures or sceenshots to see that. The problem is, corporations are not moral and don't worry about the "state" of mmo's. They are in it to make money; it's capitalism. These people will continue to sell what makes them money regardless of fans desires. It's like packaging peanut butter and jelly together in the same tube...It just makes the old school jar and jar types seem vintage......Now please don't make me post my folder screenshots proving I actually like peanut butter and jelly....because I have none and if I did they wouldn't be suitable.
I played AoC for a bit and really didn't like it much. No slight on funcom...just wasn't my cup of tea. I did get annoyed at the repetitive zoning in and out of Inn's and every building or room I went in. But that is the small price to pay for a console headed game. On the other hand I did enjoy it much more than other "true console" formated games like FFXI. I think this evolution to cross formats is inevitable. Plus with the sales of GTA and Halo, money hungry corps wouldn't be corps if they didn't at least try the market. Does it ruin MMO's along the way? Probably doesn't even enter the equation for them. But that doesn't mean the idealist in us all doesn't have a right to fret its passing
I think this is hilarious. I am watching the History channel, which is talking about Nazism in the United States through out the past century and then I read this hate related thread. The OP hates AoC because it is different and is "watering" down the pure genre or "race."
MMORPG's w/ Max level characters: DAoC, SWG, & WoW
Currently Playing: WAR Preferred Playstyle: Roleplay/adventurous, in a sandbox game.
Personaly i think WoW ruined what MMO's are today. That is my opinion.
Why?
.
Because it set somewhat of a "standard" For some reason people think that a game must be like WoW now in order for it to be acceptable. And if not that just about any game realeased today is apparently a "WoW clone" due to the fact it was released after WoW. Plus WoW being as popular as it is and that being a Majority of peoples first MMO ever, it's almost like the MMO community is being polluted with uneducated RPG players.

Icky....I think its less like purifying a race and more like when Coke tried that new recipe/flavor in the 80's. People just missed the "Classic" taste. But now we're getting off topic

How dismissive.
Sorry but the truth is the mmo genre is going to change. Just like any sort of entertainment. It will broaden and morph and there will be fringe elements as well as "mainstream".
People can complain and raise their fists all they want but it's going to happen. And the more people who are playing then the more game companies that are going to spring up to try to fill the void.
The old ways are over as far as what is the norm. They were fringe back then when you consider that most people weren't interested in online games. However as there were only a few games out people just sort of thought that "this was the way it is always going to be".
Not the case.
So players are going to either have to come to grips with the changes or do something else. Eventually they will get something that they might want to play but it's not going to fall into the millions as most people aren't interested in all encompassing games that take over their lives.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
just coz the game is not sandbox every one thinks its crap or some thing cant a game be different for ones i have not played it but would love to just try it out just to see what i think.
but come on ppl if you dont like the game dont play the dam thing no one is making you i dont like wow but i dont bash the game its just not for me

Ok, I will give it a rest and I really dont want to be offencive, but I think you understand why I was against your musical/mmo analogy. It just didnt made any sense use pop music to go against pop music.
The game is designed for players, if you think AoC is a console game, you may think DDO, Guild Wars and EQ2 are console games. ( you know why )
AoC doesnt have the main feature console players love, real time combat... and we still dont know how the 360 version will be.
No, your opinion about WoW and AoC is your opinion, the arrogance is in the way you showed your opinion thinking these games and its players are shallow and less deeper than you or the game you like.
AoC is not the game for you, as WoW is not the game for me, I can agree with that, but a misinformed changed interview and a elitist posture ( with no fundation) are not necessary good ways to show your opinion.

What I tried to say is, there is no need to use PC users to test something for the 360
It is pretty easy to produce for a closed System.
PC performance and system that need tests and it is hard to avoid bugs.

Currently Playing: WAR
Preferred Playstyle: Roleplay/adventurous, in a sandbox game.
Why?
Cheers

Eventually they will get something that they might want to play but it's not going to fall into the millions as most people aren't interested in all encompassing games that take over their lives.

just coz the game is not sandbox every one thinks its crap or some thing
cant a game be different for ones i have not played it but would love to just try it out just to see what i think.
but come on ppl if you dont like the game dont play the dam thing no one is making you i dont like wow but i dont bash the game its just not for me
The only reason I mentioned my age is because some dude insinuated that I was in grade school and trying to be anti-society (which I'm not).
And if you don't realize that this game is designed for consoles... damn. It's clear to everyone.
And please point out how I was "showing arrogance." This one I still don't understand. The same dude called me a "sheep" I did not drop that term, he did.
Hmm... do you think I was being arrogant because I said AOC is not a true MMORPG and that WoW ruined our genera? If thats it (?) I'd like to point out that just because you play and pay for an on-line game - it has nothing to do with you personally because you did not design the game. I fail to see where you're coming from on that point.
Anyway.
