I would say if your having fun playing AOC play it. That's what I'll be doing as soon as I get my graphic card upgrade, or if they patch the game so it utilizes my ati card better.
Barring that, I have no easy answer for you as I am currently having a similar dilemna. I would definitely play precu SWG but that is not an option. NGE SWG is an option, I just don't know how good an option at this point. If only they would do a few things to make the game healthier, like server merges. It would rock if they also gave people the option of using the old UI again. Hell...keep the damn combat engine if you are so determined to keep it, but atleast give us back the functionality of the old UI.
You could play WOW. Everyone around here hates WOW but it's an option. There's decent loot in the game and it runs on almost everyone's computer. Some people don't like the graphical style though. Me, I'm on the fence about it. I prefer AOC's graphics but WOW has a style of it's own ( not my preference but tolerable).
I would say EQ2 but it's so damn ugly. Bah! It's a personal thing and I appologize. I know some think the game is beautiful but something about it rubs me wrong. The faces are fat and plasticy and just wierdly unsatisfying to look at. I'd rather look at a night elf from wow than a human from EQ2. Also it's just quest, quest, quest. I'm sick of quests. And instances like AOC. If we're going to trash AOC for instances we should atleast be consistent. And it's an SOE game, which I could live with but they are either incompetent or have a completely different vision of mmo's so EQ2 is out.
COH graphically is so dated now. Plus, I'm not into the 'superhero' thing. It's hard to get past that.
Matrix Online has interlock. Can't get beyond that. If combat sucks it's game over for me. Plus, they are in worse shape than SWG I think. Atleast precu SWG was good. I played MXO when it launched and the first couple months. It was never good. The thing that bugged me was interlock.
Guildwars isn't an mmo, but it's free. I can't bring myself to even load it up on my computer though. I think the game was a good idea at the time, but that time is over. It's more like a cooperative online rpg where u can play with a little group now and again in instanced zones. Ah...instances again.
DAOC is too old. UO and all those games are just too dated now.
I suppose you could bide your time, read the Warhammer and Spellborn forums and hope they are good. Or you could just tough it out with AOC and hope the game gets better, as it surely will, with time.

Ok not the same genre. I hate to tell you this though, but this genre is officially dead.....
It MAY get resurrected in the future, but at the moment it's dead.
This and your subsequent posts are true. The genre is dead; people just don't know it. The current model will only work for so long, even though a sucker is born every minute. The current model is to hype the shit out of a game, to get a lot of people to play it at launch...and crank up the leveling so people get their crack fix of level dings. The early weeks of an MMO are really meant to attract as many players as possible.
Then, after a month or two, the game play completely dries out and most people leave the game. But, no worries, the next shitty game will come out shortly and you can start the process all over again.
Thanks for sites like this, because it saved me from wasting $ on AoC which I would've hated right outta the box (instancing FTW).
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon. In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit
What is sad is that games like PoBS and AoC were FINISHED upon release; the game was released on their terms. And the games still suck ass after a month or two.
Vanguard, on the other hand, was forced to release prematurely, and it was still a good game (other than crashing every two hours). MS had spent $15mil on it, but compared to Turbines recenty acquired $40 mil budget for their new MMO, the $15 mil really isn't that big.
So, too bad they didn't "finish" Vanguard. The last immersive, non-instanced MMO released.
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon. In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit
MMO's are far from dead. I think the gaming community in general is on the fence alot because there are so many companies now shooting them out. After the MMO's have all come out, a player base will show up low in some high in others. But I would have to say MMO's are going to be around in the future and change the way we play video games. Rememebr playing a console online with others is considered an MMO game, as long as it hits on the massive levels. Imagine for example a MMO Assasins Creed type game on the console?
ya that game real life sucks. I'm lvl 26 and I already wanna log out lol. I'm stuck on that "find a job you enjoy" quest, and the crafting at value village sucks.
prolly vanguard or swg pre-cu /edit ow and don't forget darkfall
nice
Completely agree. Just came back to Vanguard after being gone for a year, having a blast. I'll be playing it until Darkfall or Warhammer comes out.
LOL
actually, I was sarcastic
Vanguard has no player to play with beside the gazillion bugs
swg pre-cu should have given you the hint, that I was sarcastic...
Darkfall is vaporware
Wow, you're a total moron. I played Vanguard at launch when it supposedly had "a gazillion bugs" I ran into 4 broken quests in 1 month, and that's it. The bugs were fixed extremely quickly. I guess reputations just stick too much. The game runs beautifully now. I have everything maxed out and I don't even stutter, there are no bugs that I can see, and there haven't been for over a year, and there's plenty of people. Vanguard has one of the biggest maps in MMO history, and I am in the LEAST POPULATED area, and I've already run into about 10 people in just the starter zone. Educate yourself before you post, you sound like a retard.
As for Darkfall, if you think that's vaporware then you're more clueless then I thought.
I honestly wouldn't recommend any of those to my friends right now, except maybe EVE. While EVE is what would call a fun and great MMO, I wouldn't recommend it for the simple fact that it's not very friendly to most gamers mindsets - which is the A.D.D. mindset - in that it takes waiting real-life time to actually get to the point that you are truly effective with one type of ship (forget multiple ships, that'll take a long time).
I'm not saying they should change this in EVE, because obviously a lot of people like this setup, and the game is doing fairly well still with 20K+ people usually on the one server. I think the game is great. If I had more patience to sit around watching the clock, I'd be playing EVE.
As far as on-the-ground, traditional style MMO's go, I can't recommend any right now, and I've played just about all of them. I certainly won't recommend anyone to wait on warhammer, since that is more than likely just going to be a WoW clone with more hold-your-hand cookie-cutter PVP that has no exhilarating risks or reward feeling to PVP.
All these other games have no balls. They're all too afraid to think outside the box and do something fun. AOC is even worse than WoW or EQ2 or most of the other ones. AOC ended up a horrible instance-fest with garbage combat / pvp, a billion broken things/bugs/holes.
I know I'm not alone in regretting buying that piece of garbage.
At this point, the only titles I'd even consider are Stargate Worlds, perhaps a new Diablo 3 (Diablo MMO since it is now heavily rumored, almost confirmed), perhaps the new Star Wars MMO (recent talk of laid-off LA employees are squealing about KOTOR 3 being an MMO between LA and BIO).
After laughing at AoC I went back to EVE... the new expansion looks pretty awesome: Faction Warfare. It releases June 10th I think.
I played Eve for my brother in law, and I REALLY TRIED TO LIKE IT. Unfortunately i think it sucked. I thought the community was neat and everything and the whole space ship in space was awesome for like 2 hours...untill I realized I would only be looking at a small space ship and endless nothingness. Then I quickly quit and uninstalled. Just too boring for me. I needed something with instant action If I wanted to have it, not jump 50 gates to get to a low security zone only to be blown up by players that have been there since launch.
If you played the game past 2 hours you would realize we at least have a point to our PVP. And no one ever forces you to jump 50 gates to go anywhere. If you understood the mechanics of a skill-based game then you would realize a newbie can indeed learn to fly a ship that can contribute to small roaming gangs very quickly
I'm sorry but I like for my victims to stay dead when I kill them. In AoC people can just get right back up and fight you all night long. I guess being an immortal god is fun- but I like to have some time to savor my victory and get my loot
That being said though I dont see much point to this thread. If you enjoy AoC then just play AoC. IF you are tired of trolls hating on your favorite MMO then dont worry after a few months the majority will disappear. Myself I just havent had time to play AoC myself since I'm busy with other things
I voted online flash games. I enjoy the flash tower defense games. Those pretty much rock.
Ok not the same genre. I hate to tell you this though, but this genre is officially dead.....
It MAY get resurrected in the future, but at the moment it's dead.
MMO's are actually the biggest money maker right now, and the future sales look to be good too. So actually you are very wrong if you think that the MMO genre is anywhere close to dead. Maybe for you its dead, but not for the rest of the world. Flash games are alot of fun when your at work or bored waiting for servers to update. But I would never play a flash game myself over an MMO.
problem is that it is a FLOODED market... TOO many third party companies want a piece of the mmo pie.
SO all we have now is a bunch of mmo's with thin populations that are spread very thin.. While mmo's are a huge successful money maker, lets not forget that it is only actually a fraction of the gaming population and if they keep releasing more and more without closing old ones down it just makes the population spread out even more making it look dead or empty and appearing to have no success..
What is there like over 100 million people playing video games, and like 3 “big budget” MMOs coming out ever year? And there are people that demand each games caters just to them.
People that try, complain and cancel ever MMO that comes out have serious mental problems. No ones ideal games is ever going to be created. Yet some people like me can have with with any new game that comes out.
If there is a problem, it's the players not knowing how to have fun. I say have fun with AoC, WoW, WAR, Eve, CoX, and many more. Go ahead, have fun.
And I'm so sorry your ideal games does not exist mr I hate instances, consoles, levels, classes, girls and so on. But you do know, it's never going to exist right?
So learn to have fun, or stop gaming and stop being such a d*ck.
I am no fan of AoC but they shipped out their entire initial shipment and sold out of collectors editions and then just released they reached 1 million copies shipped.
That is hardly what I would call a "dead genre".
Some of us may not like the direction the genre is going, like myself but to bad - so sad for me, right?
Ok, Since alot of people are bashing AOC and say there are all these things wrong with it, that it sucks omg it i wasted money blah blah blah. You guys post here and let us all know what we should be playing that is better. *edit* I enjoy AOC, and am playing the legacy for e2 atm because well I have always wanted to try it. Heard Vanguard is starting to pick up again..let me know when a trial is available and ill give it a go.

What i know from many who come over the years to this forum is they dont want everytime same ol mmo's that have endless quests of killing 20x boars or wolves or tigers.
AoC have make it an ART to have endless grind fest of these kind of quests up to lvl80:P
But true there always some mmorpg you can have fun with, i do(i play also solo rpg's like morrowind oblivion two worlds gohic ), but AoC is a big failor after my month free i quit hehe.

I was going to say World of Warcraft, but then I voted other because I'm playing Lineage 2 now. I never tried AOC, but then again I never wanted to after I saw a video of someone playing it and it looked like World of Warcraft with realistic graphics.

imagine if one day chess just disappeared and every other game that came out was like checkers. Would the fans of chess players have mental problems for not finding checkers fun? They'd just stop playing board games all together.
All the MMOs that have come out in the past few years have catered to the WoW crowd, and one of two games that were different was butchered and changed to fit WoW gameplay. Some people just aren't fans of that type of game play. They can't have fun in those types of games because they are too constricting.
The only real option out there for these players is Eve, but that game is set in space which some people absolutely cannot stand.
Saying that preferring one type of game play over another is a sign of mental problems shows me that you're a fucking retard.

Mythos is free, and made by people who made Diablo. link to mmorpg's Mythos page
Yah AoC its become a huge disapointment, its a great multiplayer game thats a fact but far for becoming a MMO game.
So i return to LOTRO and start to enjoy the pleasures of PvP with creeps and take their skin out.
Im playing AoC and having a great time.
The combat is outstanding, graphics are top notch and its fun to play .I dont care who bashes it and if they dont like it.
I like it and that is all that matters.Ill sub to it as i feel it is better than most mmo's out atm.
This is Funcom a proven track record of success with AO and how to implement patches and updates for me means the game will get better and better.
Remember AO at launch?A year later it gets game of the year?
What is your physical limit?
