It doesn't surprise me...honestly Wraith of the Lich king is pretty much one giant rip off of Aoc & War Mechanics. The difference between WoW & everyone elses's system is theirs will probably be Required to complete for certain things lol while WAR's is completely optional.
WAR's tome of knowledge isn't just some RPG mechanic btw...I don't remember EVER playing a PnP game that gave you titles & achievements for killing or dying X number of times lol. The Achievement system from MMOs did NOT come from Pen & Paper games. WAR's ToK is based on im sure yes Lord of the Ring's Achievement system (not the horrible grind X skill X times for a better versoin system thank god) and the XBoX live Achievement system. Its just a fun PvE thing that also encorporates the entire rest of the game. Maps, Quest Logs, Achievements, Titles, Records of Notable places you've been and characters you've met etc etc. No other MMO logs that Much player Information. Not even EQ2's EQPlayer's system logs some of the stuff the ToK does.
Dern it, Blizzard just gave me a reason to return someday if it pans out well, and its not a bunch of points used for gear! It would also have to focus on alot of PvE as well, like killing, and discoveries...heh
Far as discoveries go, I do remember from the last Wow expansion that if you were an Alchemist you could "discover" certain rare potions while you were making your usual ones. Other than that.. I guess Blizz is trying to keep up with the Joneses.........lets hope the "Joneses" (War) do it better and with more feeling hehehe
What matters is, who does it better, thus making it more entertaining/funny/enjoyable.
And by the way, AoC nor WAR would have been like they are today, if WoW hadn't come out, the butterfly effect lies so heavily upon WoW and the mmo genre. WoW isn't the invented wheel, nor reinvented, it is the giant wheel that was created by some people who happened to be good at making entertaining stuff. As the wheel started to roll it changed the whole view on that particular set of wheel types (mmo genre), which before weren't used that much but after they made it and it rolled across the street, more people started wondering about that wheel.
Opening of AQ gates not having anything to do with today's public quest in WAR? haha don't make me laugh, the AQ gate event might have been crude and a specific one timer but if you look at it, it was a pretty obvious attempt of a public quest. WAR saw potential and now making it less "painful" and more rewarding for everyone.
ToK? It's a giant feature for WAR, if Blizzard are good at what they do, they'll make theirs just as (or more) entertaining/funny.
Raid centric mmorpgs? A lot of those exist, WoW certainly not being the first nor the most painful, just in different shapes and forms.
This thread showed how silly people can be about "borrowing ideas from others", seeing people defend WAR's special features as "one of a kind" or "first to be seen ever", just makes me laugh, nothing of it is new it's just some old ideas once used before made better! Nothing more, nothing less. And guess what that's what's so god damn great about it, making good things even better!
Final words?
Blizzard: "We are the Borg! Prepare yourselves to be assimilated! Resistance is futile!"

Considering Mythic's motto is:
"How did Blizzard handle that??!?!??"
It's a smart move on Blizzards part.
ToK is a good feature, so is RvR.
C'mon Blizzard copy that RvR too!
"The liberties and resulting economic prosperity that YOU take for granted were granted by those "dead guys"
Fallout did, which is a copy of D&D gamestyle.
