I used to love MMORPGs. I spent alot of time playing table top games before MMOs came out. D&D, Blood Bowl, Warhammer, and d20 Star Wars to name a few favorites.
Now I can't get into any games. I resent the fact that MMOs charge monthly fees. Free to play microtransaction games are, as a rule, always boring grindfests with tons of immature players. I don't know what happened.
I played a few MMORPGs, but I didn't start playing on a daily basis until SWG came out. After the NGE I went back to FFXI, but realized that I don't want to devote that much time to playing a game. FFXI is not at all casual friendly. I played WoW beta for a year or so and loved it. I got frustrated when release hit and I had to start over from scratch and then I just got burned out about 6 months after release.
Since then I've bounced around from game to game trying to find one that's worth a subscription, but none of the current games do.
The only game I've even thought about playing again with any zeal is Phanatsy Star Universe. The problem with that is I only want to play the 360 version. I traded my copy in and can't find the game in any stores, not to mention I'd have to fill up precious hard drive space on my 360 with the expansion.
I hate EVE with a passion. It's boring, the combat sucks, mining is like watching grass grow, and the only saving grace of the game is the socializing with people in the EVE radio channel.
AoC sucked, AO is lame now, CoX is way too repetitive, DDO sucks, and I could go on and on about every game that's out that's half-way worth the effort to try them out.
Will we ever get a good solid title that is worth a monthly fee?

Its going to take a company with balls to put something revolutionary out, and the brains to market it successfully.
There is really not a whole lot out that fills my MMO hobby gap at the moment. I bounce from game to game, do a few things here, a few things there, but get bored quickly. They are All the same, just different themes and settings. Nostalgia is about the prime culprit for how I find myself playing MMOs right now.
Darkfall boasts some pretty impressive features, we will see. I also want to see how Earthrise and Stargate Worlds does.
All that aside, you're in the boat with the rest of us, trying to sample that genuine, old school nostalgia that we all experienced in the early days.
Okay .
Do you feel like this:
?
You get bored kinda fast sometimes.
You don't feel the need to have the best gear anymore.
You prefer to solo a lot more and not having to deal with newbees every time.
That's not too old for MMO, that's how people feel who played MMO a lot I believe. I feel like that kinda.
edit: nvm this thread didn't got the direction i thought it was 8D
Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.
EAT ME MMORPG.com!
Try EQ2? Its actually pretty darn good. Took me 4 years to get in to it but once i finally decided to give it a shot with the 2 month free veteran trial, I have fallen in love.
Playing a Ranger and I can be as casual or as hardcore as I wish, which is what I like about the game.
Feels a bit like wow on steroids.
Strong community and really decent players, I've yet to see any immature bafoons speaking in chat.
If your in to RP its also probably the best game out there for that (next to SWG my old favorite)
Lol. A lot of people are in the same boat. And imho, grab some friends and stick to a game - socialize and play with them. It's usually a better experience when you have people to share it with yeah?
I know several of my friends stopped playing WoW and went back to D2 LOD Hardcore mode for a while - that was a blast.
Take some friends and go play CoD4 or Battlefield or even CS Source.
The game world isn't only about MMOs.
No see the problem is MMOs are still too new. Yeah they've been out for years now, but not as long as everything else. I've been in and out of dozens of pay to play and even free MMOs and I think I'm content for now in City of Heroes. Eventually when I get a new computer I'll move on to Age of Conan. If it sucks, oh well I'll stop playing, but I think it looks awesome and think that that could tide me over for quite a while as well. Till the next MMO comes out. You're never too old to play video games. That's an idea that idiots with no lives and no skill will try to tell you. But I never see an end to my video gaming. I play when I have nothing better to do and it's entertaining.
The title of this thread is somewhat misleading. When I read it, I was going to respond by saying, you are never too old to play a good MMO. But upon reading your post, you are essentially saying, there are no good MMOs right now. With that sentiment, I cannot disagree with you. MMOs are imaginatively (probably not a real word) bankrupt right now. It's toture, but not much can be done about it right now.
You should tryout the newly improved Lineage 2. Although it had to live up the reputation of a grinding game for years. However, its coming free expansion Gracia's vitality system will help the players to level a lot faster. There had been a rumor that it would take less than 18 mobs to kill to reach level 15. Nevertheless, the game mechanics is complicated enough to keep players years enjoying without getting bored. Free expansions are given out roughly 2-3 every year, which would include new areas, skills, weapons, changes to existing rules, and sometimes new race (kamael). Players from the offical board would always tell new players to make up their mind before coming in, for once you are in (and once you are up to level 65 or above) you will be stuck in forever. The graphics of the game is nearly perfect, although the game engine (unreal engine 2) is a little outdated. But if you turn on the new improved shader, realistic water reflection, depth of field affect, the game play will be enchanted. Bot had been a problem in the game for a while, but offical reactions are catching up, and players would always fight back too. Overall, I highly recommend the game, and you should be interested in it for years, otherwise you will quit after two days of playing.
ha ha, good post I'am in thesame boat with you, infact I think alot of the older players are. there is too much crap being released these days.
I am hoping that Warhammer will be worthy trying out. Out of the total dissapointment with most mmorgps and guilds I even started a guild in the anticipation of Warhammer.
You might want to try a good RPG like Mass Effect. I recently started playing Mass Effect and I have to say that it;s the best RPG I played since Arcanum. Fallout 3 should be very good as well.
I can no longer force myself to try every mmorpg out there. I rather play RPGs untill something interesting like Warhammer appears on the horizont.
To be honest mmorpgs kinda turned me off from the entire PC gaming scene, I find myself closer and closer to buying a console of some kind. I am att the point right now where I really don;t see myself ever buying another PC, instead I much rather buy a PS 3 or Xbox 360. I am too old and value my time too much these days to fart around with unfinished products on unstable platforms.
Sinister Savant MMORPG Community
I'm about to reinstall and resub to Ultima Online.
I wish it would have pulled the numbers EQ did, as I'd much rather see MMOs with UO (Pre-Ren) systems instead of EQ systems .
It was a free and open world were you could do what you wanted. There was no levels, no grind, you gained skill by using skills. You could build a house, setup vendors at your house and RP a crazy shop keep, or sail out on your boat and fish up treasures from the deep. You could mine, or better yet PK some miners and take their ore .
Are you too old? No...I'm coming up on my 41st, and I have played with folks in their 60s.
Is an MMO your playstyle? Maybe not. Age is irrelevant when it comes to this. Either a game hooks you, or it doesn't. I was the 'old' person back in the MUD days (I think I was a ripe old age of 25). These days, people look at me as an oddity, but....really, there are MANY mmo players who have been online and smacking things topside the head since before a lot of folks were even born. Perhaps online gaming just isn't your 'thing' anymore.
Honestly if Warhammer happens to suck I have NO idea what i will do. I was so hyped up about AoC and it flopped on me. Every MMO since pre cu SWG has kinda sucked for me. They seem to lack depth. Played WoW for a while, but the gear grind gets old quickly.
I agree to the previous post about playing some RPG's for a while. All though now that I have beat Mass Effect I cant go back to crappy non story line MMO's.
But i do recommend Mass Effect/The Witcher/Oblivion if you can't settle down with a MMO at the moment or just waiting for Warhammer
*Prays for Warhammer to be good*
Uhh... what?
MMOs are different now than they were a few years ago.......Todays MMO is designed toward the casual gamer that doesnt have alot of time yet wants quick satisfaction (ie instant gratification)........Most of the games that have come out since WoW have used this principle and it isnt going to change anytime soon.....Everyone is trying to copy WoWs success and get their piece of the pie.......Even games like EQ1 and EQ2 which were out before WoW changed their philosophy and made their games more casual friendly.......MMOs have nothing to do with how old anyone is but just what is currently hot....It is basically no different than the movies or music that is out there today......
The answer that came to mind with just reading the title is; "No, you're never too old."
But you have been playing MMO's for a while. You've experienced the golden, and you've experienced the rusted. With this you've gained experience and while that wouldn't normally mean anything.. We're stuck in a dryspell of MMOs. Either they copy the function of another successful MMO (such as WoW) or they fail entirely. It's not you, trust me. The last great game I played was Pre-CU SWG, it was unique in it's system and I liked that. Now everything seems... WoWified to me. SWG went WoW even... and a lot of games that came out after WoW seemed to just follow in it's steps.. only with different colors.
The MMO world is like the gaming market of the past-2007. Drier than sand in the desert. There's nothing new, nothing innovative and the game companies are afraid to take that huge leap. They take small ones, hoping it'll be the thing that can draw the crowds in.. but we still see the old systems and familiarity. They're too afraid to risk their wallets and so MMO gaming grows boring and repetative. We're stuck in a rut with no rescue.
No, you're not too old for MMOs... but the MMOs are too old for you.

Eichenkatze u had it down pack i don"t comment on forums often but i totally agree with what you said.
I wish Oblivion had online play be nothing super but id love to play with a buddy.
Truth be told, mmos and computer games in general will NEVER surpass paper and dice rpgs.
I remember something that Alan Moore said about comics and films. He said its easy for him to write an uncompromising and innovative comic story because there is no multi-million corporate tomfoolery binding his creative instincts. And if the comic doesn't work then at least it didn't cost an obscene amount of money that could have been better spent helping the world's poor or summink. Movies are the opposite, rarely innovative (art-house being the exception) as the studios want returns on their investment so they will tend to mimic what has sold in the past which leads to an endless variation on McCheeseburger movies. This is why Moore has NOTHING to do with film versions of his comics, doesn't even take payment - the money goes to the artists. He is that disgusted with the multi-billion dollar film industry.
The same principle applies with paper and dice RPGs versus big-budget mmos. You are better sticking with old-school paper & dice RPG games for genuine innovation and immersion. The only trick is, as you get older you and your RPG mates spread apart, get busy with work and families and have no more time to plan and play paper & dice RPGs.
I play mmos as a poor subsititute for paper & dice RPGs. When I see people bitch hard about wanting a "sandbox game" or "immersion", well they should play old-school RPGs. MMOs are a bargain made with corporate whoredom, they will NEVER deliver the holy grail.

You are never too old for MMORPG's!
Now thats out of the way, the reason you are probably in this situation is because theres nothing new on the table. I'd recommend waiting for Warhammer Online, it brings so much more to an MMO. I'd also recommend Aion, it looks brilliant, not sure about how much of a grind it may be though. Also, in any game you play, try hook up with a good guild, it makes the game so much more fun in my opinion.
Warhammer Online
Crnobog, The Black God
Chaos Chosen
<Guildless>
i don't think eather you or anyone else is to old for mmo games.
but i do think the mmo games is to old for us..
what im refering to is that most games has the standard, lvling this and lvling that formula,
and after lvling 5-6 games to endgame without anything to do, unless you want to be controlled by outhers how you gonna live your life.. the motivation for these games have ended for me..
but i still belive there comes a game where its more about fun, than just getting to end game, and wait wait wait, and end up doing nothing
I'm in the same state as you are, I'm an old school MMO player and I've never felt into MMO's as I felt when playing DAOC or EQ1 and such. These days it's just more of a yawn thing, I guess it's because I've played them too much.
I'm waiting for the new games to come out, but in the meantime I'm mainly surfing and listening to music. I also play some FPS games. And am getting heavily into single-player RPG's (If I'm skilled enough). Recently: Hitman 4: Blood money - rather hard for me, but good fun all the same.
I suggest you just wait and give games a go that catched your eye, after all it's only the game and the first subscription, if it fails you can just put the game on the shelf, cancel sub and keep an eye on it, if it gets really good, you can go back from where you left.
Age is not important unless you are a cheese.

I am in the same boat as you, I also want to renew sup to PSU but I dont want to paid a company that release small things at a time while all the contents are in the disc already (feels ripoff). On the other hand, with a low population in PSU, they prop need to do this or else it will be hard to get groups.
Anyways, yes most of them sucked and I resubbed CoX a month ago and is getting boring now also. There is a good solid title named Warhammer Online coming out soon and I think this will be my last mmo until something I really really like.
Age is not important unless you are a cheese.
Also red wine, whiskey and cigars.
I somewhat feel the same way. I beta tested the game (pretty much the game) that started it all. Meridian59. Was addicted till it closed shop and EQ was released. Those were the days. Everyone was new, everyone was excited. Those days are gone forever. Good memorys though. Played Age of Conan. Great graphics! A lot of good points. But can't really explain why it didn't keep me. After playing Vangaurd a few months ago for one hour and then deleting it from my computer, I came back after reading much good about it. Am playing now and seems to be a wonderful game. Wide open. But yet I don't have that passion, that drive, that obsession that drives me to my computer like in the old days. I think it's me. I am older then most, and maybe the game lust is dwindling. I am currently playing Eve. It has the most off the beaten path of leveling. Each skill has 5 levels with each one taking longer to learn, but when you are logged off the skill clock keeps ticking. As far as I can tell all players are adults (at least chronologically speaking) I tryed Eve over the years at least 4 seperate times and couldn't begin to grasp the game or even get a clue. For some reason this last time things really clicked for me, (at least the basics) and now playing. Haven't grouped yet or joined a guild but that might be wide open in the future.
Wish you luck with finding some game intertainment.
King of the world
14.95 a month is nothing. A decent game costs 50 bucks, you play it for a month, and then you're done. 14.95 is cheap for an MMO you can play as much as you want.
Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition is working on a virtual table top so you can play the game with other people online.
It's not out yet, but should release soon. You might like that better than any MMO, if you find some cool people to play the game with.
Never too old for gaming! It is the MMOs that have become dull, repetitive catoring to a different generation. We aren't seeing anything new, but have a much larger selection of games. Think when I started gaming there we UO, EQ n AC (prolly one or two more). But everything has since then pretty much copied the EQ style of game...only made it even simpler.
Kinda like goin out every year n buying the same car, just with a new paint job. Companies are just after a bit of the WoW success so the best bet is to sell something familiar to the WoW generation.
