I used to love MMORPGs. I spent alot of time playing table top games before MMOs came out. D&D, Blood Bowl, Warhammer, and d20 Star Wars to name a few favorites. Now I can't get into any games. I resent the fact that MMOs charge monthly fees. Free to play microtransaction games are, as a rule, always boring grindfests with tons of immature players. I don't know what happened. I played a few MMORPGs, but I didn't start playing on a daily basis until SWG came out. After the NGE I went back to FFXI, but realized that I don't want to devote that much time to playing a game. FFXI is not at all casual friendly. I played WoW beta for a year or so and loved it. I got frustrated when release hit and I had to start over from scratch and then I just got burned out about 6 months after release. Since then I've bounced around from game to game trying to find one that's worth a subscription, but none of the current games do. The only game I've even thought about playing again with any zeal is Phanatsy Star Universe. The problem with that is I only want to play the 360 version. I traded my copy in and can't find the game in any stores, not to mention I'd have to fill up precious hard drive space on my 360 with the expansion. I hate EVE with a passion. It's boring, the combat sucks, mining is like watching grass grow, and the only saving grace of the game is the socializing with people in the EVE radio channel. AoC sucked, AO is lame now, CoX is way too repetitive, DDO sucks, and I could go on and on about every game that's out that's half-way worth the effort to try them out. Will we ever get a good solid title that is worth a monthly fee?

Holy +1 sword of generalizations and assumptions, Batman.
First off, I'm 30 years old.
I don't mind difficult games, but I absolutely can't stand when itemization takes precedence over player skill.
I have a ton of age 23+ gamers on my Xbox Live Friend's list and I've also gamed with some pretty mature players on PSN. You shouldn't speak so matter of factly about something you seemed to have little to no experience with.
PSU is grindfest, but it's also a good action RPG that is actually quite fun.
I still like table top gaming, but that doesn't change the fact that the MMORPG genre is seriously lacking.
And I don't have a clue why so many people are saying that Darkfall will be so great. The screenshots look horrid, it's been in development for way too long, and if it ever gets release I'll judge then what kind of game it is. Too many people have started hyping games that they've never played and then when the games are finally released, they get all bent out of shape and cry about how disapointed they are in the game.
You like wow and you say screenshots Darkfall look horrid?
You mean you dont like style of Darkfall right?
Screenshots 2008 Darkfall are as good or even better then lets say AoC, so what are you talking about screens from before 2006?
And common be honest and bit wiser its been mostly HYPED by trolls who shout vaporware or hate games like Darkfall.
Darkfall is not hyped at all its well know by mmo's players becouse of hate trolls and vaporware whiners.
And why should people dont like game with deep gameplay ala morrowind oblivion or no lvls no xp skill based huge world to explore bringback the mmorpg how it should be tell me why?
I know why, you all want the wow's war's aco's eq's games well sorry but true hardcore also want a game for themselfs, hope you dont mind.
Nobody is forced to follow Darkfall:)
This guy could show up at your mothers funeral and somehow in the middle of the Eulogy manage to slide in a shill about Darkfall. I can see it now

To get back to the point I'd say you can never really be too old for mmos, hell even 80yr olds play them (I know what you mean by too old I just wanted to tell ya something) right now I've been switching from MMO to MMO hoping something's interesting. Once you quit an mmo it seems like all others are bascially the same right now. So I mainly play my 360 until WAR. I'd say if your not happy with most MMOs WAR might not be your piece of cake, I'm hoping it will be for me. Right now I'd say just go play console games and hopefully a new flavor will appear. Fileplanet also just realeased a beta for a 360 game that if you can subscribe you can play, the Red Factions game, I'm gonna subscribe tomorrow and hope I get a shot...
I feel the same as many in this thread. I just can't get into any current MMO that is out there. Most recently I played LOTRO but got bored after max level. I went back to WoW but that was only fun for a week, then it felt like work again. I'm longing for a L2 type game with improved graphics and no gold-farmers or bots.
Yeah it's definately the quality of mmo's that's made me stop playing them.
When you have been playing computer games for a long time, 25 years in my case, you expect a certain quality that sadly recent mmo's are just lacking.
I did think that maybe I'm getting too old , but recently I've been downloading some older games from about 5 years ago (didn't have anything else to play) and I must say that they were much more entertaining than many games released this year.
I think developers are not getting their priorities right. They should be concentrating on designing games that are actually fun to play rather than just being eye candy. There seems a trend developing where games are getting increasing dumbed down. Maybe people just don't have the concentration span that did before.
Edit: 2 fairly recent games I've actually enjoyed playing were Bioshock and Portal (not mmo's), I wish developers would take a good look at these and compare it to bland dross that they are releasing.

Portal was awesome. That game will definitely be one of those games I keep for a long time and drag out every now and then to play through it. Another game that stands the test of time is Fable The Lost Chapters. I pulled that out a few days ago and installed it. I can't stop playing it. I love Fable and Fable 2 is gonna be the shite. The only thing I don't like about Fable is how fast you age in comparison with the story. If you max out all your stuff before the facing Jack of Blades the first time you end up being older than your freaking mom.
The problem, as i see it, is that all of the terrible mmo's keep making money. The 100's of cookie cutter asian grinders that are shallow and free keep making money. The trend has gone to release a pretty game with good graphics as fast as possible, resulting in a lack of quality and long term playability. There is a good reason for this, they make money.
People jump in, use the cash shop or pay for a few months p2p, get bored, move on and repeat. What has happend is that someone figured out that mmo fans are willing to pay for a short time on almost any game, untill they figure out its boring and move on. This style of play caters 100% to the f2p modle of screwing you in the wallet before you can figure out how boring the game actually is. I think the only way for this trend to end is for someone to realese an epic game, that would suck all those f2p idiots into it, forcing korea to spend more than a day making their pretty graphics pair up with some in-depth gameplay.
The problem is its really risky, lots of time and money must be put on the line. So while blockbuster, high production mmo's are a dying breed, they are being replaced with low budget f2p games with pretty graphics, that all use the same old style of gameplay. I guess all we can do is complain and vote with our wallets, mabey someone out there is listining and willing to put millions on the line to satisfy a huge market of gamers looking for something that isnt out there.

Start fishing the F2P's man thats what im doing. Occasionaly ill find something to hold my attention for a while until i find something different.
I never did play U.O. or EQ, but I played pre-cu SWG and it was my first MMO. I had so much fun, but I lost interest after the C.U. and started playing EQ2 which was fun as well. I played that for 2 or 3 years then left for Vanguard but it just didn't grab me. Since then i have played Tabula Rasa, LOTRO, Eve, and POTBS and I just can't recapture the magic.
I couldn't say really what it is, but I have MMO ennui. No matter what I try I just think - meh.
So i have preordered Warhammer, and I hope that RvR (something i have never tried) will be refreshing. I really love the idea of MMOs and virtual worlds, but I find everything on the market now mortifyingly dull. I really WANT to play something (really!) and there is nothing worth playing.
Perhaps it is time for putting my MMO career to death and finding another source of entertainment, and perhaps, I too, am too old for MMOs.

Sorry bro, were in an mmorpg age. Nexon makes millions from children with credit cards. WoW makes millions with a p2p game that i don't find very fun. Remember when the games we played were the games we all liked?
Well now people waste their time whining about games they don't like. Saying they want it "bearable". I think you should play a game that you think is WORTH your time. I think you aren't looking for mmos if you want a solid title!
"i have a lvl 26 maplestory warrior lvl 9 asda story archer and a adventure quest mage lvl 15 and my xfire is my bro's"
My first real MMO(ish) experience was in neverwinter nights, I hadn't played anything like it before as I wasn't old enough to have a credit card to play everquest. (yes I'm young, only 20)
However being that I am an avid reader.. and the game came out while I was still immersing myself in written worlds of fantasy I was _fascinated_ by roleplaying. The community I found and was involved with for serveral years there has been so far one of the best. Not to say it didn't have its unique problems, for it defintally did. However, after leaving NWN I have yet to find any gaming communities that come _close_ to the one I was in. I have also not roleplayed for a few years becayse of that.
After that I got involved with world of warcraft, I had succesfuly put off joining the game until a few friends pushed me into buying it. I realize now that I never really had any fun at all with the game. I was always chasing one goal: trying to be able to play with my friends. Yet when I started that was impossible for me as my friends advanced in such strides that even when I hit max level I couldn't raid with them and they generally had no time for me. (mix in a few other social problems involving said friends.. and yah)
It wasn't until I moved servers and started playing with some of the people I originally enjoyed NWN with and a RL friend did I have any fun. I still wasn't immersed in the game at all, I found myself not caring about the content. Why should I care about enter Tempest Keep? It wasn't as if the world were very persistant, there weren't Dungeon Masters trying to kill my character enticing him to band up his friends to go pursue the evil in the abyss.
At this time I can't remember when I stopped caring about the actual game and trying to simply be able to play with friends in WoW. It was probably when my friends would bug me to lvl as fast as I can. Remember when old world quests in WoW simply gave almost no experience, when the fastest way to lvl was to KILL KILL KILL, ala the south park boar killing episode, that was probably when I lost interest in the game.
I just quit that game a few days ago.. and I probably lost interest in it a couple years ago. Quite sad.
However, after trying out a few other MMO's I realized that as much as I now more or less despise WoW, it does get things "right". For its generation that is. Hopefully the next generation will be able to advance beyond the strict system that WoW has put in place. Perhaps it will again allow us to immerse ourselves into these Massive games once again. Perhaps someone can tackle the PW/NWN system again and make it work... (NWN3 .. made by bioware .. please?)
All we can really do is hope I guess.. although for now I might just wait for warhammer and hope that the RvR will force people into banding together and forming communities that don't exist many other places.
/p.s. it's 5am.. if this is at all incoherent.. ahh well..
I believe it's not that you are to old, but that you get burnt out after a while. You are trying to stimulate your senses with a game, but you have already pushed it to the limit. Many times you just need a break from playing games and then you can enjoy them again.

You are not alone. I agree that there are virtually no decent online games available at the moment. They are all extremely low quality piles of crap.......well apart from EVE which is the only point I have to disagree with you on. I agree that the combat isnt awe inspiring but it doesnt seem to be any worse than what the other mmos offer. Mining is indeed extremely boring which is why I havent done a single bit of it. You do realise that in EVE if you dont enjoy something then you dont have to do it right? If you found mining so boring then why did you carry on doing it? Unlike in other games, in this one you can do anything you like to make progress. In fact you dont even have to shoot a single thing if you dont want to!
Also did you get involved in any PvP actions by joining a corporation? I personally have not done that yet but it is actually the whole point of EVE. If you play it just for the PvE side of things then you will indeed get bored with it.......although I personally think it isnt really any more boring than other mmos in that respect. By PvP actions I dont neccessarily mean just blowing up other players. You could research and build things for people, spy on enemy players and provide information for your corporation, scramble and interfere with enemy ships to help your fleet, protect mining vessels from pirate attacks......or anything else you can think of for that matter.
In EVE you have a whole universe in which you can freely interact with the players in a meaningful way. The economy is also totally player driven. I havent seen any other games that actually manage to create a realistic gameworld in the way that EVE does.
Right thats my sales pitch out of the way. Sorry its just that I feel the need to point all this stuff out because when I see people saying that EVE is boring it really strikes me as odd when you consider the fact that EVE allows you to do almost anything you like while all the other mmos are extremely restrictive in comparison.......but then maybe thats the problem. Maybe people like having their choices made for them. Maybe people dont actually want to be part of a story but would rather just sit back and have a story told to them. If thats the case with you then to be honest I dont think you will have to wait very long for another game to keep your attention for a while as there are loads of themepark games coming out all the time that tell you exactly where to go, what to be and what to do.

I really like what you wrote there. It sounds like you have a good imagination which is part of the problem with mmos these days. They just dont allow players to be creative at all. I also got really frustrated with WoW. I remember when I started playing it and I was all fired up about playing my dwarf character. Several months down the line I was bored out of my skull. I had totally given up on trying to be creative with the game because there really is nothing to do in that game except chase after the next level. Sure you can stand around and pretend to have in-character chats with people but thats the same as doing nothing. You cant have any impact on the gameworld at all as the game doesnt provide the players with the tools to use their creativity.
I played NWN but I never got involved with the online aspect as I wasnt into online gaming at the time. It sounds like it was a much a more creative game in that respect.......but then thats because it tried to be more like a real roleplaying game which all the current mmos such as WoW are nothing like. Like you said they are all just KILL KILL KILL. In fact I had the same problem regarding playing with friends. I started WoW with my friend and we were both being dwarven brothers. However he always wanted to gain levels as fast as possible while I wanted to take my time. As a result it wasnt long before we just couldnt play with each other any more so we were always in different places all the time just KILLING KILLING KILLING.
I was so glad when I stopped playing that game. I was playing it for ages too without actually enjoying it. It was addictive but it certainly wasnt fun.
i think once we get kotor online then we'll have somthing very good, im looking forward to it and i have also played SWG a little bit ago and i loved it until every1 started leaving so i cant w8 for kotor online

Yeah thats fine if you're a Starwars nut and dont mind playing yet another game set in the Starwars universe. Dont get me wrong I do like Starwars but I just get really bored when I hear about it now. It seems like every couple of years some games company that cant come up with any decent ideas announces yet another Starwars title and everyone jumps up and down and gets all excited. Why call it KOTOR when they could just call it Starwars 47 or whatever number it is? It reminds me of the old tv series The Prisoner where everyone cheers each time a new president gets ellected.
I would rather see a new game come out that is based on a fresh original idea rather than a rehashed version of a game that has already been done god knows how many times.

I can see it now
"Your mom is dead, she got pwnd by Darkfall!"
Chances are I'm older than you and I still love them. Too old? Doubt it, too cynical? Maybe.
Start fishing the F2P's man thats what im doing. Occasionaly ill find something to hold my attention for a while until i find something different.
I feel it too.
I do not remember the quote exactly but...
"You do not get old and stop playing, you stop playing and become old." -- Unknown
MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.
"i have a lvl 26 maplestory warrior lvl 9 asda story archer and a adventure quest mage lvl 15 and my xfire is my bro's"
long as the rating system says Teen or up your never to old. Unless it says Teen's-30 any other age GTFO
I haven't found anything after pre-nge SWG to hold my attention either.
The only game that even looks promising ,to me,is Fallen Earth, skill based, vast open world, and what looks like a promising crafting system.
May the force be with you.......yeah whatever.
